No. 22
DRILL
A Highly
Productive
Machine
for
the Modern
Shop
All operating levers
are conveniently locat
ed on the No. 22 Drill,
thereby increasing
speed of operation.
HE modern shop requires machines that are trouble-free and fool-proof,
T
little lubrication, are highly productive on the job and readily changed between jobs.
Buffalo engineering goes back to these fundamentals and works out the design presented
here.
Troubles are eliminated by correct proportioning and good workmanship thruout the
machine. The drill is safe because the back gears and direct drive clutch are interlocked
and moved by one lever, thus may be shifted while running idle or at moderate speeds.
Lubrication is concentrated at four pressure gun fittings. All other parts, including gearing,
operate in oil bath or spray.
Convenience of setup is provided for by eliminating need for any loose wrenches.

Spindle feed stops and other parts are very readily adjusted.
High production is assured by correct proportioning of the
non-slip V-belt drive and the convenience of spindle traverse
and feed levers. The steel column makes for utmost rigidity
under drilling pressure.
Large
size hole capacity no longer means a slow cumber
some machine. The Buffalo No. 22 handles as fast and smooth
as a regular sensitive drill on light work.
DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
Drive.
A vertical motor is mounted on an adjustable bracket at
the rear of the machine and drives the spindle pulley thru the
V-belt in one of four steps with ample overload capacity at
even the lowest speed.
The spindle pulley is mounted on ball bearings and drives
thru a clutch direct to the sleeve or thru 6 to 1 ratio hardened
steel back gearing.
Back gears are engaged after the direct clutch is disen
gaged on a single motion of the handle at the left side of the
head. In reversing the shift, the gears are disengaged before
the direct drive clutch engages.
The eight speeds are in geometrical progression from 65
i
to 1350 r.p.m.
The speed range provides for efficient use of drills from
3/16 to 2" and also for tapping and spot facing. The quick
shift from direct to back gear speeds is most convenient for
tapping and reaming.
Other
speed ranges may be obtained by use of 900 cr
600/1200 r.p.m. motors instead of the standard 1200. Higher
speeds may also be obtained with an 1800 r.p.m. motor if the
ball bearing spindle sleeve is added.
Spindle Assembly.
The spindle driving quill is mounted in ball bearings in
the head. It drives thru double keys which equalize the torque.
The spindle is high carbon steel, heat treated and ground.
Least diameter is 1.312". It runs in bronze bushings in the feed
rack sleeve which is provided with ball thrust bearings top and
bottom with end play adjustment. Full ball bearing rack
sleeve is standard design at an extra price and is advisable
when the machine is to be used for high speeds. Rack teeth
are cut integral in the sleeve.
Sliding
ment is assured by the rack in the column. The bearing of
the rack sleeve is unusually long to reduce wear and also
give accurate long life.

Feeding Mechanism and Control.
Feed power is taken off the spindle by V-belt below the head. The belt is shifted by
pushing a spring belt idler and changing steps. Feed is automatically released at proper
depth by the lever on the left side of the head. Hand advance or return is accomplished by
the swing levers at right side which also engage power feed in one motion. Clutches are
positive, multiple tooth, guarded by an overload shear pin. Slow advance for spot facing
is produced by the hand wheel at the front.
All feed gearing is in constant mesh, silent, and enclosed in the head. Gearing runs
in a berth of oil. The rack and pinion ratio is such that for small drills a direct hand feed
by the sv/ing lever makes this machine as convenient as a sensitive drill. The spindle is
counter-balanced and may be adjusted to return after the feed is released.
Column.
The column, characteristic of Buffalo modern design, consists of steel for high strength
and small deflection, ground to high finish and accuracy.
Tables and Bases.
Both type tables are heavily ribbed, provided with T-slots, and carefully fitted and
scraped to fine bearing on supporting members. Square tables have three T-slots and
ample coolant trough.
Bases are well ribbed and provided with coolant reservoirs in both types.
Lubrication.
As all gearing runs in oil and bearings are anti-friction, the only part requiring daily
lubrication is the spindle in the rack sleeve. Time and repairs are saved by the bath and
pressure lubrication.
Motor and Controls.
Power recommended is a standard open ball bearing motor.
or magnetic for ordinary service or reversing for tapping. If furnished by us, this equipment
is completely wired ready to connect machine to power lines.
Usual conditions can be handled by a two horsepower motor. For lighter general pur
pose, one will be sufficient and for maximum duty, three horsepower. Maximum power re
quirements occur with high production in intermediate drill sizes.
Motor and control conform to N.E.M.A. and safety standards.
Control may be manual
Capacity.
Rated capacity is 1-1/4" drills in steel. Drills up to 2" may be driven in cast iron or
non-ferrous materials. Buffalo engineers will recommend and adapt a machine to such par
ticular problems.
Safety.
There are no exposed moving parts needing guards below six feet. A shear pin pro
tects the feed gearing. The sliding head and spindle are fully counter-balanced. Any
trol furnished will include overload protection.

Special Equipment
Available
Tapping.
A direct reversing motor control on a stand
ard motor is the fastest and most economical
method of tapping holes over 1/2". An auto
matic reversing cycle can be applied for con
tinuous tapping.
Coolant System.
The standard Buffalo Centrifugal Coolant
pump is available on this machine. This is a
submerged mounted, centrifugal motor pump;
constantly primed, delivering a large flow of
water at low pressure without danger of clog
ging or overload. Large drip shield can be
furnished for round column machine allowing
use of coolant with this type.
-
Drive Speeds.
As noted under Drive—the use of other than
1200 r.p.m. motors or multiple or variable
speed, is advised to suit special conditions.
Special Parts.
Flanged spindle quill can be furnished to
customer's specifications
and special adaptions which will be engi
neered to specifications upon receipt of com
plete details.
as well as other extras
Pedestal Type.
This machine also is built in pedestal type.
A
very heavy rigid base, square column, and
T-slotted table make an ideal support for
heavy production drilling. Dovetail table slide
with scraped ways and gibs maintain accurate
alignment.

MULTIPLE SPINDLE DRILL
The No. 22 pedestal type drill is available in any number of multiple spindles. Hand
scraped guides and gibs make for easy raising and lowering of the table and two "jacks"
give added support.
i
The construction of this machine is such that it can be readily modified to meet numerous
special requirements so necessary to different types of work.
