The 40 name and number phonebook makes it simple
to store and dial your most frequently used numbers.

Use Caller Display and the calls list to see who is
calling before you pick up the phone and keep track
of incoming calls.

Redial any of the last 5 numbers dialled from the redial list.

Use up to 5 handsets with your BT Lyric 1100 base
station without the need for additional wiring, giving you
a complete phone system on a single line.

The BT Lyric 1100 is a Digitally Enhanced Cordless

WARNING

Do not place your BT Lyric 1100 in
the bathroom or other humid areas.

Handset range

The handset reception range from
the base is up to 300m outdoors
and up to 50m indoors.

Signal strength

The symbol on your handset
indicates when you are in range.
When you are out of range a beep
will sound every minute.

Location

You need to place your BT Lyric 1100 close enough to
a mains power and telephone socket so that the cables
will reach.

Make sure it is at least 1 metre away from other
electrical appliances to avoid interference.

Your BT Lyric 1100 works by sending radio signals
between the handset and base. The strength of the
signal depends on where you site the base. Putting it as
high as possible ensures the best signal.

Setting up

1. Plug the power adaptor and telephone cables into the
underside of the base.

IMPORTANT

Do not connect the telephone line
until the handset is fully charged.

The base station must be plugged
into the mains power socket at all
times.

2. Plug the power adaptor into the mains wall socket and

switch the power on. The green Power light on the base
comes on.

3. Install the 2 x NiMH AAA batteries supplied. Then slide
the battery compartment cover into place.

4. Charge the handset for at least 16 hours by placing the
handset on the base. The red Charging light comes on.
The handset is pre-registered to the base as BT Lyric.
This is shown in the display.

5. After 16 hours charging, plug the telephone line cord
into the wall socket.

Your BT Lyric 1100 is ready for use.

7Getting started

Talk/Standby time

Under ideal conditions, the
handset batteries should give
about 14 hours talk time or 350
hours standby on a single charge.
(The base must still remain
plugged in to the mains and
switched on at all times.)

Please note that new NiMH
batteries do not reach full capacity
until they have been in normal use
for several days.

Battery low warning

When the handset battery symbol
is empty and flashing, and there is
a warning beep every 10 seconds,
you will need to recharge the
handset before using it.

See ‘Battery performance’ on the
following page.

Battery performance

To keep your batteries in the best
condition, leave the handset off
the base for a few hours at a time
(after the initial 16 hour charge).
Running the batteries right down
at least once a week will help them
last as long as possible.

After charging your handset for the
first time, subsequent charging time
is about 6–8 hours a day. Batteries
and handset may become warm
during charging.This is normal.

The charge capacity of
rechargeable batteries will reduce
with time as they wear out, giving
the handset less talk/standby time.
Eventually they will need to be
replaced. New batteries are
available from the BT Lyric 1100
Helpline on 0870 605 8047.

Navigating the menus…

Your BT Lyric 1100 handset uses a menu system which
is easy to use. In most cases each menu leads to a list of
options. Have a look at the menu map on the following
page.

When the handset is switched on and in standby, press

Menu to open the main menu and use the and

scroll buttons to highlight the menu you want.

Press Menu again to open the list of options.

Once the menu list you want is open, use the and

to scroll though the options and the button to

select the option you want.

Call timer

Your handset automatically times
the duration of every external call.
The time is shown during the call
and for a few seconds after the call
has ended.

Auto-answer

If you would rather press Talk to
receive a call when the the handset
is on the base, you need to switch
Auto-answer off, see page 29.

Dialling numbers quickly

Numbers can also be dialled direct
from the phonebook (page 20), the
calls list (page 24), or the redial list
(page 17).

Switch handset on/off

1. Press and hold to switch off. Press and release
again to switch on.

Make an external call

1. Press , listen for the dial tone then dial the number.

Preparatory dialling

1. Enter the number first. If you make a mistake press
to delete. Press to dial.

End a call

1. Press or place the handset back on the base.

Receiving calls

When the phone rings, the display shows

External Call

and the EXT symbol flashes.

If you have subscribed to your network’s Caller Display
service, the caller’s number (and name if stored in the
phonebook) is displayed. See page 23 for more information.

1. Press to answer the call or, if the handset is on the
base, simply lift it and speak.

Earpiece volume

You can adjust the earpiece/loudspeaker volume.
There are 5 levels to choose from.

During a call:

1. Use the and buttons to select volume

Loudspeaker volume

Handsfree

Handsfree lets you talk to your caller without holding the
handset. It also enables other people in the room listen
to both sides of your conversation.

You can switch to handsfree before or during a call.

Secrecy

During a call, you can talk to someone nearby without
your caller hearing you.

Redial a number from the redial list

You can redial up to 5 of the last numbers called. If the
number is stored in the phonebook, the name will also
be displayed (see ‘Phonebook’, page 20).

Paging

You can alert handset users that they are wanted or
locate a missing handset. (Paging calls cannot be
answered by a handset.

1. Press on the base. The handset(s) ring. Display

Direct Call

You can enter a telephone number into the handset
which can be used as an emergency quick dial – for
example by a babysitter.

When direct call is switched on, press any button on the
handset (except ) and the direct call telephone
number will be dialled automatically.

You can store up to 40 entries in the phonebook. Each
entry contains a name and phone number. Names can be
up to 8 characters long and numbers up to 20 digits.

Insert a ‘pause’ in a stored number

Some internal switchboards may require you to enter an
access code (e.g. 9) to get an outside line. So that the
switchboard has time to pick up an outside line before
the rest of the number is dialled, you may need to add a
pause in the dialling sequence. For example:

1. When storing a number, at the point you want to insert
a pause, press and hold until

You can enter as many pauses as required.

Caller Display & the calls list

Caller Display

If you subscribe to a Caller Display service you can see
who is calling you on your handset display.

If the caller’s number matches an entry stored in the
phonebook, the name will be displayed as well.

Caller Display information contains the full telephone
number, including the area code. So when storing
numbers in the phonebook remember to include the area
code, otherwise the caller’s number will not match.

Calls list

Whether you answer a call or not, the caller’s number and
the date and time of the call are stored in the calls list.
The calls list stores the details of your last 20 callers.

You can display, scroll through and dial numbers on the
list and copy them into the phonebook.

If a call is received when the calls list is full, the oldest
entry will be deleted automatically.

IMPORTANT

To use Caller Display and Call
Waiting you must first subscribe
to the service from your network
provider. A quarterly fee is payable.

Caller information not available

Occasionally the telephone number
of the caller is not available and
cannot therefore be displayed.

In this case your BT Lyric 1100
provides you with some explanatory
information.

UNAVAILA

The number is unavailable.

WITHHELD

The caller has withheld their
number.

RINGBACK

Ringback call.

OPERATOR

The call has been made via
the operator.

PAYPHONE

The caller is ringing from a
payphone.

INTERNAT

International call.

View the calls list

1. Press to open the calls list. Then use the and
buttons to scroll through the list.

2. If the name and number of the caller has been stored in
the phonebook these will be displayed.

Dial a number in the list

1. Press to open the calls list then scroll to the entry
you want.

2. Press to dial the number.

Copy a number to the phonebook

1. Press to open the calls list, scroll to the entry you
want and press . Display shows

New calls indicator

New calls are entries in the calls list
that have not yet been viewed.

For example, if someone calls while
you are out that call will be added
to the calls list as a ‘new call’.

The new calls indicator shows how
many new calls you have.

Call Waiting

Providing you have subscribed to your network’s
provider’s Call Waiting service, you will hear a soft beep
every 5 seconds if an incoming call arrives while you are
already on the phone. This beep is not audible to the
person you are speaking to. The second caller’s number
(and name if stored in the phonebook) will appear on the
handset display.

Instead of the engaged tone, the second caller will hear
an announcement asking them to hold the line.

Speak to a second caller

1. Press to answer the second call and put you current
caller on hold. Press again to return to your first
caller and to switch between both callers.

Caller Display and the calls list

The second caller is only charged
from the second you answer, not

Up to 5 handsets can be registered and operated from
any one BT Lyric 1100 base. Each handset can be
registered on up to 4 bases. This gives you the flexibility
to build your own phone system without the need for any
additional wiring or sockets.

Features available with additional handsets:

Transfer an external call from one handset to another.

Make an internal call between handsets.

Conduct a 3-way conversation between an external caller
and another internal handset.

Make an internal call between two handsets while a third
is making an external call.

Set a ring priority so that one handset rings before all

caller at the same time on your handset.

Switchboard compatibility

This product is intended for use within the UK for
connection to public telephone network and compatible
switchboards, which support tone dialling and timed
break recall. If in doubt please consult your network
service provider.

Switchboard external line access code

Some internal switchboards may require you to enter an
access code (e.g. 9) to get an outside line. So that the
switchboard has time to pick up an outside line, you may
also need to add a pause after the access code.

To insert an access code followed by a pause

If you use your phone with two separate switchboards
you can set up two separate access codes. Then you can
simply select which switchboard you are using your
phone with.

This feature can also automatically insert a pause
between the access code and the phone number stored
in the Phonebook.

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN), which is used
to calculate the number of items which may be connected to any other telephone line.
Your BT Lyric 1100 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 is allowed. If the total REN of 4 is
exceeded, the telephone may not ring.

With different telephone types there is no guarantee of ringing, even when the REN is
less than 4.
