for the first time, follow the simple
instructions in ‘Getting Started’ on
the next few pages.

Install the batteries
Your BT Freeway Mini mobile radios each use 3 x AAA
alkaline batteries.
With the back of radio facing you, slide down the
battery compartment cover.
Insert 3 x AAA alkaline batteries ensuring that the + and
– marked on the batteries match up with those marked
inside the battery compartment as shown.
Slide the battery cover back into place.
If the belt clip is attached, you will
need to remove it first, see
‘Attaching the belt clip’, page 6.
Battery low warning
When the batteries are low and
need replacing, your BT Freeway
Mini radio repeatedly gives a
double beep.
The operation of your radio will be
become unreliable when the
batteries are low.
If the battery level gets too low,
your radio will automatically
switch off.
For long-term storage of your
radios it is recommended that you
remove the batteries.

Attaching the belt clip (optional)
Slide down the belt clip into the slot on the back of the
radio until it clicks into place.
Removing the belt clip
Pull back the release catch, and slide the belt clip up
and away from the radio.

Switching on
1. Press and hold the button for about 3 seconds, until
you hear a beep. Your radio will briefly carry out a LCD
check before displaying your current channel number.
Switching off
1. Press and hold the button for about 3 seconds,
until you hear a beep. The radio switches off.
Adjusting the volume
There are 15 volume levels (v1 to v15)
1. When the radio is switched on, press or to
adjust the volume. The display flashes showing the
current level.
2. Either press to save your new setting or leave the
radio for 5 seconds and your new setting will be
automatically saved. The radio gives a confirmation
beep.
Remember!
To communicate with others, all
mobile radios in your group must
be set to the same channel.

Talking and listening
Set channel
Your BT Freeway Mini has 8 channels.
To communicate with others, all radios in your group
must be set to the same channel.
1. Press . The current channel flashes. Press or
to select another channel.
2. Either press to save your new setting or leave the radio
for 5 seconds and your new setting will be automatically
saved. The radio gives a confirmation beep.
Talking to another radio
When your radios are switched on:
1. Press and hold .
2. Hold the radio about 5-7cm from your mouth and speak.
3. Release when you have finished speaking. Your

listener will hear a beep (called a roger tone) to confirm
you have finished speaking. They can then speak to you.
When you are transmitting you will notice the LCD
outline stops flashing and becomes permanently lit.

Sending call tone
To alert other radios in your group that you want to
communicate with them, you can send a call tone.
This can also help you find a misplaced radio.
1. Press . Both your radio and the other radios in your
group will sound a call tone.
Listen to another radio
When switched on, your BT Freeway Mini is always in
standby reception when the is not being pressed and
you are not changing any of the settings. Provided the
other radio is using the same channel, you will hear
them speak.
It is recommended that you do not
use your radios closer than 1.5
metres apart to avoid interference.
Your radios have a range of up to
3km. However, the range is
affected by the environment or
terrain in which it is being used.
To obtain the maximum range,
use in clear line of site situations.
Obstructions between the radios
(e.g. buildings) will greatly reduce
the range achieved.

When the other radio user has finished speaking you
can respond.
When you are receiving a transmission you will notice
the LCD outline stops flashing and disappears.
Channel scan
You can scan through the 8 channels on your
BT Freeway Mini to check for any activity and see which
channels are in use and which are free. You can also
scan through to locate another radio user in your group
who has accidentally changed channels.
1. Press twice. The icon is displayed along with
either
––
or y. ––indicates that scan is off and yindicates
that it is on. Press the or buttons to change
the current setting.
Either press the to save your new setting or leave
the radio for 5 seconds and your current setting will be
automatically saved, you will hear a confirmation beep.
2. When scan is switched on your radio will rapidly scan

each of the 8 channels and pause for 5 seconds on any
active channel so you can hear the transmission, before
resuming the scan.
If an active channel is found and you hear the transmission:
To respond to the other radio, press within 5 seconds.
To exit the transmission, and continue with the channel
scan press or .
Channel monitor
When you are not receiving a call your handset
automatically mutes the speaker so that you will not
hear weak signals or background noise. By switching
channel monitor ON you can hear transmissions on your
selected channel that you would not hear under normal
circumstances as the signal is too weak.
1. Press three times. The channel monitor is switched
ON for 5 seconds. During this time you will hear
background noise along with any weak transmissions.

Will not switch on
Batteries may have run down or are not installed correctly. Check and replace batteries.
No transmission

Check all radios are on the same channel.

Speech sounds distorted at the receiving end
Make sure you are not talking too closely/too far from the microphone.
Poor reception
The range is dependent on environment and terrain.
The range of your BT Freeway Mini radios can be impaired when there is not clear
sight between the radios. For example, buildings and thick stone walls can severely
affect the range.

Safety and general
Do not open the mobile radio.
Radio signals transmitted between mobile radios may cause interference to hearing aids.
Switch off the mobile radio when near medical equipment.
This product should not be used by people with pacemakers.
Do not use the radio when driving a vehicle or operating machinery.
Do not use your radio when on board an aircraft.
Do not use your radio if it has a damaged antenna. When transmitting do not hold the
antenna.
Turn the radio off and remove the batteries during long term storage.
IMPORTANT In the event of an accident this product cannot be used to contact the emergency services.

Environmental
Never dispose of batteries in a fire. There is a serious risk of explosion and/or the release
of highly toxic chemicals.
Do not expose your product to direct sunlight, extreme cold or place it near heating
appliances.
Do not submerge any part of your product in water and do not use it in damp, humid or
wet conditions.
Do not expose your product to fire, explosive or other hazardous conditions. For example,
at petrol station or areas where explosive products are used.
Cleaning
Clean with a soft damp (not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use a dry cloth as
this may cause a static shock.
Never use household polish, alcohol or cleaning solutions to clean the mobile radio as this
will cause damage.
If the radio should become wet, dry it with a dry, lint-free cloth and do not use the radio
until it is completely dry.

Power source: 3 x AAA alkaline batteries. Effective radiated power: 0.5 Watts
maximum.
Typical battery life
Using good quality alkaline batteries: 24 hours. (Based on 90% standby, 5% transmit
and 5% receive.)
Guarantee
Your BT Freeway Mini is guaranteed for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase.
The conditions of the guarantee are:
The guarantee shall only apply to defects that occur within the 12 month guarantee period.
Proof of purchase is required.
The equipment is returned to BT or its agent as instructed.
This guarantee does not cover any faults or defects caused by accidents, misuse, fair
wear and tear, neglect, tampering with the equipment, or any attempt at adjustment or
repair other than through approved agents.
This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights.

If you have to return your product:
Pack the radios securely, preferably in the original packaging. All parts must be returned
including belt clips.
Outside of guarantee:
If your product needs repair outside of the guarantee we recommend that you call
0167 256 4444 for details of our recommended repair agents.

This product is intended for use within the United Kingdom and other European member
states that have implemented the PMR446 service. Before using your radio outside the
United Kingdom you should check that the relevant radio administration has
implemented the PMR446 service and that no restrictions apply. Information regarding
