Brocade VDX6720 overview
The Brocade VDX6720 family is a set of 10 GbE line-rate, low latency, lossless Data Center Bridging
(DCB) switches that comes in two forms. These include a 24-port, single height version
(VDX6720-24) and a 60-port double height version (VDX6720-60). The Brocade VDX6720s run on
Brocade’s new Network Operating System (Network OS) v2.0.0. Network OS is high-performance,
scalable, feature-rich, and designed to integrate with Brocade's data center switching products. For
details about the Network OS, please see the Brocade Network OS Administrator’s Guide.
A key feature with the Brocade VDX6720 family is Brocade Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS), a new
set of technologies that allows users to create flatter, virtualized, and converged data center
networks. VCS is scalable, permitting users to expand at their own pace and simplified, allowing
users to manage the network as a single entity. VCS-based Ethernet fabrics are convergence
capable, enabling Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) storage.

The Brocade VDX6720 family also features Remote Lights Out (RLO) management and Keep Alive
Processing (KAP) in an auxiliary CPU subsystem. RLO provides remote access capability when
physical access is not possible or is difficult. RLO permits a remote user to perform tasks such as
switch reset and power cycling. KAP generates DCB L2 and FCoE protocol frames during hot code
loads so that the switch does not time out during a firmware upgrade.
The Brocade VDX6720 family offers Ports-on-Demand (POD) licensing as well. “Base” models of
the switches contain 16 (for the VDX6720-24) or 40 (for the VDX6720-60) ports. Additional ports
can be licensed via POD. One POD license on the VDX6720-24 allows the additional eight ports to
be activated. For the VDX6720-60, two POD licenses (for ten ports each) can be purchased.
Platform components and capabilities
The Brocade VDX6720 family offers the following common features and capabilities:
A system motherboard that features a Freescale MPC8548 Reduced Instruction Set Computer
(RISC) CPU running at 1.3 GHz with integrated peripherals
An auxiliary 405EX processor to support Keep Alive Processing (KAP) and Remote Lights Out
Management (RLO)
An RJ45 10/100/1000 Ethernet out-of-band management port
Default two-node license, available multi-node license
POD (Ports on Demand):
Single POD of 8 ports on VDX6720-24
Two sets of 10-port PODs on VDX6720-60
FCoE licensing
VCS licensing

Installation and safety considerations
You can install a Brocade VDX6720 switch in the following ways:
As a standalone unit on a flat surface.
In an EIA cabinet using a fixed-rail rack mount kit. The optional fixed-rail rack mount kit can
be ordered from your switch retailer.
In an EIA cabinet using an optional mid-mount rack kit for switches. The optional
mid-mount rack kit for switches can be ordered from your switch retailer.
Mounting a VDX6720 in the Idataplex IBM 17” depth rack requires an Idataplex rack
mount kit, Brocade part number 60-1001519-01.
To install and operate the switch successfully, ensure the following:
The primary outlet is correctly wired, protected by a circuit breaker, and grounded in
accordance with local electrical codes.
The supply circuit, line fusing, and wire size are adequate, as specified by the electrical
rating on the switch nameplate.
The power supply standards provided in Table 9, “Power Supply Specifications” are met.
Environmental considerations
For successful installation and operation of the switch, ensure that the following environmental
requirements are met:
Because the Brocade VDX6720 can be ordered with fans that either move air front to back
or back to front, be sure to orient your switch with the airflow pattern of any other devices
in the rack.
All equipment in the rack should force air in the same direction to avoid intake of exhaust
air.
A maximum of 102 cubic meters/hour (60 cubic feet/minute) and a minimum of 74.8
cubic meters/hour (44 cubic feet/minute) of air flow is available to the air intake vents.
The ambient air temperature does not exceed 40° C (104° F) while the switch is operating.
Cabinet considerations
For successful installation and operation of the switch in a cabinet, ensure the following cabinet
requirements are met:
The cabinet must be a standard EIA cabinet.
A cabinet space that is one rack unit (1U for VDX6720-24) or two rack units (2U for
VDX6720-60) high depending on the platform ordered; 4.45 cm (1.75 inches) or 8.90 cm
(3.50 inches) high and 48.3 cm (19 inches) wide.
The equipment in the cabinet is grounded through a reliable branch circuit connection and
maintain ground at all times. Do not rely on a secondary connection to a branch circuit,
such as a power strip.
Airflow and temperature requirements are met on an ongoing basis, particularly if the
switch is installed in a closed or multicabinet assembly.
The additional weight of the switch does not exceed the cabinet’s weight limits or
unbalance the cabinet in any way.
The cabinet is secured to ensure stability in case of unexpected movement, such as an
earthquake.
Recommendations for cable management
The minimum bend radius for a 50 micron cable is 2 inches under full tensile load and 1.2 inches
with no tensile load.
