USER’S INSTRUCTIONS - ALL VERSIONS A
POWER FLUE VERSION
If your fire is a power flue model, read this section first.
TO LIGHT THE FIRE:
Note: On the Slab 16 Version the ON/OFF switch referred to in these instructions is the main external fused spur switch on the wall. Ensure that the mains electricity is switched on at the fused spur. Switch on the fan by pressing the ON/OFF switch to ON. Within 5 seconds the fan will achieve optimum speed and the air pressure switch (in the fan box) will detect adequate air flow and open the solenoid valve. When this occurs, the Indicator Light will illuminate, indicating that gas is available to the main gas control. Follow the additional instructions for your version of fire in the following sections.
TO TURN THE FIRE OFF:
DO NOT
DO NOT DO NOT
DO NOT switch the fan off before turning off the burner using the control procedure as described in the additional instructions for your model of fire. Only then can you switch off the fan by pressing the ON/OFF switch to OFF. Wait 30 seconds before trying to turn ON again to allow the fan to reset itself.
The fan unit has a safety device (air pressure switch) which will switch off the fire if very strong wind conditions prevent the combustion products being exhausted to the outside. If this occurs relight the fire as normal.
MANUAL CONTROL VERSION
The gas control is situated centrally behind the control cover. Piezo ignition is used to light the pilot, which can also be lit with a match. The pilot is designed to remain permanently on, enabling the fire to be lit by simply turning the gas control on.
TO LIGHT THE PILOT
With the gas control knob in the off position, fully depress and turn the control knob anticlockwise to the pilot position (spark symbol) until it clicks, check the pilot has lit (repeat if the pilot does not light) and keep the control knob pressed for at least ten seconds When the control knob is released the pilot should remain alight. If the pilot does not remain alight repeat the procedure. If when established the pilot extinguishes for any reason, the gas supply to the fire will automatically be cut off by the flame supervision device. Do not attempt to re-light the pilot for at least two minutes.
TO LIGHT THE FIRE
With the pilot already lit as above, turn the gas control knob anti-clockwise to the high setting (large flame symbol).
TO REDUCE THE HEAT SETTING
Turn the gas control knob anti-clockwise towards the low setting (small flame symbol).
TO TURN THE FIRE OFF
Depress the gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise to the pilot position (spark symbol). The main burner will go out and the pilot will remain lit and may be left on permanently. To turn the pilot off, depress the gas control knob and turn clockwise to OFF.

CLEANING
Cleaning the fire should only be carried out when the fire is turned off and is cold.
Never use inflammable cleaning fluids.
Never clean the stainless steel with abrasive cleaning materials such as scouring pads, wire wool, emery cloth etc. as damage will occur.
CLEANING THE STAINLESS STEEL PARTS
For every day cleaning use a damp cloth and detergent, wipe clean with a clean damp cloth then a dry cloth.
CLEANING THE BRASS PARTS
The brass frame option is unlacquered and will tarnish. To clean, remove from the appliance and use a good quality brass polish, we recommend Solvol Autosol metal cleaner, available from most car accessory shops, or Hotspot Multi-use Metal Polish“, available from your supplier or through our mail order service. Metal polishes, abrasive cleaners and solvents can damage painted surfaces.
CLEANING THE BLACK PAINTED SURFACES
To clean wait until the fire is cold and gently dust any deposit on the surface using a dry soft paint brush. During use, if a flame is in direct contact with the painted surface it may cause the black finish to change to light grey, repositioning the top ceramic pieces will direct the flame away from the rear and side panels and if required the surface can be dusted with a soft paint brush and re-sprayed with high temperature paint. A thin layer of paint offers the best heat resistance.
CLEANING THE CORIAN® MANTLE, HEARTH AND RAISED HEARTH
For every day cleaning use a damp cloth and detergent, wipe clean with a clean damp cloth then a dry cloth. When this does not work use Cif scouring cream.
TO CLEAN / REPLACE THE CERAMICS
Carefully remove all loose ceramic pieces and brush all pieces with a dry soft paint brush then reassemble by carefully following the instructions and diagrams in sections H to L.
IMPORTANT NOTES
This fire is CE approved to the European Standard EN 509 and is intended for decorative purposes.
During use the ceramics may vary in colour and as with all high temperature ceramics, cracks may appear. This is normal and is due to the initial shrinkage of the ceramics and will not effect the fire’s performance.
The fire is fitted with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) which continuously monitors the atmosphere in the room turning off the gas supply to the fire if combustion products are detected. If the fire turns itself off, re-light the fire following the lighting procedure. If the fire repeatedly turns itself off a qualified service engineer must be called to check the complete installation.
PEBBLE VERSION
As pebbles are light coloured, any soot discoloration may be more visible than on the other available fuel effects.
A permanent air vent is not normally required for this fire in the UK, but a permanent 100 cm2 air vent must still be fitted when used in Southern Ireland. It is important that if an air vent has been fitted it is periodically checked to ensure that the vent remains free from obstruction at all times.
The chimney must be swept before the appliance is installed and must be checked regularly to ensure that all products of combustion are entering the flue and that there is no excessive build up of soot or debris, excessive quantities of soot or debris on the fire will require removal, refer to “CLEANING“. If a sooting problem persists seek expert advise.
The fire has a naked flame, a suitable guard should be fitted to give full protection to the young, elderly or infirm.
CAUTION
The ODS must not be adjusted or put out of operation and only original manufacturer’s replacement parts must be used.
WARNING
Never alter the fuel layout or add extra pieces to the fire.
CAUTION
Never throw rubbish onto the fire. Never place candles on, in or near the fire as they are a fire hazard.

INSTALLATION IN TIMBER FRAME BUILDINGS PF MODELS
These instructions are to serve as guidance only, since the construction of timber frame buildings varies from site to site. It is important to note that where removal of any part of the inner timber leaf of the wall is involved, the structural integrity of the wall must be maintained and the advice of your local Building Control Department should be sought. Guidelines should be sought from IGE/UP/7 Gas Installations In Timber Frame Buildings. If the property is under any form of N.H.B.C. cover, it is advised that their advise on this modification to the property should also be sought.
Either of the following 2 methods of installation may be adapted for use in timber frame buildings providing extra care is taken to protect combustible materials from contact with hot surfaces.
Special attention must be paid to the location of the studwork frames of the inner leaf and the appliance positioned accordingly. Wires and pipes that run within the inner timber leaf must also be located and taken into account when positioning the appliance.
METHOD 1 EXTENDED FIRE SURROUND OR FALSE CHIMNEY BREAST
50 mm clearance must be provided from the appliance case sides, rear and base, and 100mm clearance from the appliance top to any combustibles. These clearances must be maintained by the presence of a purpose provided cavity box.
The cavity box should be constructed from 12mm Supalux® or equivalent material and be fixed with min. internal opening dimensions of 700mm high x 470mm wide x 232mm depth. A hole of 200 mm diameter must be cut in the back of the cavity box concentric with the flue duct when the appliance is installed.
A 200mm diameter metal sleeve concentric with the flue must be provided to pass through all the combustible layers of the wall. This sleeve must be a tight fit in the hole in the cavity box and must not overhang the wall cavity by more than 5mm.
The vapour barrier on the back of the inner timber leaf should be carefully cut and fixed to prevent ingress of damp into the plasterboard layer.
The void around the appliance sides, back and flue when positioned in the cavity box must be packed with 50mm of Rockwool
or equivalent material and the top must be packed with 100mm of Rockwool . NOTE: The Rockwool must not overhang the wall cavity.
The fan unit must not be installed into any combustible materials. If the outer layer of the wall is combustible then the fan unit must be surface mounted using the spacer (optional extra) with a 12mm Supalux® pad between the spacer and the wall surface. The 200mm diameter sleeve must also extend through the whole of the wall and finish flush with the outer surface.
METHOD 2 WHEN SETTING THE APPLIANCE INTO THE INNER TIMBER LEAF OF THE WALL
Find a suitable position between the wall panel frames and carefully open up a hole to allow the fixing of the cavity box referred to below, paying careful attention to securing the damp proof membrane back into position.
This box should not bridge the cavity but if this cannot be avoided then a waterproof membrane must be placed between the rear of the cavity box and the outer skin of the dwelling. If this membrane is combustible or there are any other combustible materials located behind the cavity box then a hole of 200mm diameter must be cut in the back of the cavity box concentric with the flue duct when the appliance is installed.

PREPARE THE WALL
The first step is to decide where the fire will be installed. Care must be taken to ensure that when installed the flue terminal position conforms to the requirements in diagram D.11. Please bear this in mind when choosing a location to install the fire.
Measure the height of the hearth from the floor and draw a horizontal line on the wall at the same height. Starting from this hearth level, draw a rectangle 405mm wide and 555mm high in the position required on the wall ensuring that it is central to the hearth position (see diagram D.3).
Cut away the plaster and the inner leaf of brickwork within this rectangle. Screed the floor of the recess so that it is level with the required hearth level to enable accurate fitting of the firebox and flue spigot alignment.
If using the cable fixing method of securing the firebox, please refer to the instructions supplied with the cable fixing kit and prepare the wall fixing positions.
Mark a rectangle on the outer leaf of the brickwork for the fan box wall plate. It should measure 216mm wide and 330mm high and be central to the opening in the inner leaf at a height of 320mm from the hearth to the bottom. Cut away the outer leaf of brickwork within this rectangle to create the opening for the fan wall plate (see diagram D.3).
Note: to successfully install this system the bottom edge of the wall plate must be at least 75mm above the outside ground level.
IMPORTANT
At this stage the open cavity between the inner and outer brickwork must be filled with RockwoolTM or equivalent suitable insulation material to avoid condensation on the firebox and flue spigot. This will also prevent any draughts from entering the room.
Temporarily affix the flue spigot to the rear of the firebox using the 4 self tapping screws provided (see diagram D.6) and place the firebox in position in the opening with the flue spigot protruding through the opening in the outer wall.
Referring to diagram D.5, remove the 4 screws
for the painted cover and remove the cover from the fan box. Remove the 4 screws that hold the fan unit in position and remove the fan unit from the wall plate. Put it in a safe place and cover to protect from any rain.
From the outside of the building position the wall plate into the opening created so that the flanges of the wall plate are all touching the wall and the flue duct is central in the wall plate spigot. Ensure that the cable entry hole is at the top right.
Mark a line around the flue duct where it protrudes through the wall plate. This is the position at which the flue duct will be cut so that its new end will be in line with the rear face of the wall plate (see diagram D.7).
Remove the firebox from the opening and cut the flue duct to the marked length. File the end of the flue duct length to remove sharp edges.
NOTE: When cutting the flue duct to length it is important to allow for the rebate on the fire surround being fitted.
Attach the self adhesive tape to the rear of the firebox flange, positioning it 5mm from the edge and taking care not to stretch it.
Position the firebox in the opening ensuring that the fan cable (6-way plug attached) is routed through to the opening in the outer wall and that the electricity supply cable is safely routed to the supply point.
This appliance can be fitted with a 3 Amp fused plug, which should be easily accessible for easy removal. The preferred method however would be via a fixed connection to a 3 Amp all pole switched fused spur with a minimum contact separation of 3mm.
GAS CONNECTION.
Note the position of the isolating tap and disconnect it. Route the gas supply to the position required through the rear entry point as shown in diagram D.4 ensuring the gas supply pipe is clean internally. Connect to the isolating tap.
Once the Isolating tap is fitted to the gas supply, it is still possible to removed the firebox without disconnecting the gas supply. This is achieved by first removing the Rear Inspection Plate to allow the isolating elbow to pass through the

firebox (see diagram D.1).
Ensure that the firebox is level and fix the firebox in position using either the holes in the firebox flange or the supplied cable fixing kit (please refer to the instructions supplied in the cable fixing kit). Ensure that the firebox is properly sealed to the wall.
INSTALLING THE FAN BOX
Take the wall plate and insert it into the opening in the outer wall ensuring that the flue duct is central in the wall plate spigot and that the cable entry hole is at the top right. Mark the positions of the fixing holes (slots) on the wall. Remove the wall plate. Drill and plug the fixing positions.
Remove the locknut from the fan cable strain relief bush and feed the cable (6-way plug attached) through the cable entry hole in the wall plate allowing approximately 150mm of cable to protrude. Fit the locknut and tighten the strain relief bush to secure the cable.
Refit the wall plate into the wall again ensuring that the flue duct is central with the spigot and fix the wall plate securely to the wall (see diagram D.8).
Take the glass fibre rope an feed it gently into the gap between the flue duct and the wall plate spigot to form a ring seal between them. The rope can be pushed into the gap using a pencil or screwdriver taking care not to push the rope in too far. It need only be pushed in far enough to be flush with the wall plate.
Whilst holding the fan cable towards the top of the wall plate, fit the fan unit into position and secure with the 4 screws. Connect the 6-way plug to the free 6-way socket on the fan unit circuit board ensuring it is secured correctly (see diagram D.9).
Refit the painted outer cover with the four screws and seal to the wall around all the edges with silicone sealant to prevent rain or moisture getting into the system (see diagram D.10)
Refit the burner to the firebox and connect to the isolating tap. Secure the burner with the three screws.
Ensure the manual override switch is in the auto (left) position and connect the battery (see diagrams D.1 and A.3).

GENERAL OPERATION
With the ON/OFF switch set to position 1 (ON) the PCB checks that the air pressure switch is in the resting position and fan is turned on, which initially runs at full speed until the air pressure switch is activated by sufficient flue flow. Then the voltage to the fan passes through the primary resistor slowing the fan speed and the burner on/off solenoid is opened.
The burner can now be operated as described in the relevant section of the User’s instructions.
When the warm up thermostat in the fan unit reaches the required temperature the supply to the fan is diverted through a secondary resistor reducing the fan speed further. If at any point the flue flow falls below a pre set value the fan will revert to full speed for 8 seconds. If this does not restore the flue flow to a sufficiently then the gas supply to the fire will be shut off.
NOTES
The most likely reason for the fire not to light when the fan is working is a blown solenoid coil due to a spike in the mains electricity supply.
A buzzing / humming noise from beneath the burner when the fire is turned on suggests a damaged solenoid coil due to a spike in the mains electricity supply.

COMISSIONING
Ensure all plastic protective films have been removed.
The SLAB 16 product requires commissioning to be carried out prior to fitting the raised hearth.
Ensure the Isolating tap is fully open and check for gas leaks.
Connect a pressure gauge to the inlet pressure test point, and referring to the user instructions light the fire.
Check the inlet pressure is 20mbar for NG or 37mbar for LPG when on the high setting.
Wait ten minutes for the fire to establish then with all windows and doors in the room closed, check for clearance of combustion products.
Insert the end of a smoke match 25mm below and 25mm back from the bottom edge of the canopy, test along the opening and check the smoke is drawn in. If spillage is detected open a window and repeat the test to assess if an air vent is required. If spillage persists, seek expert advice.
The fault must be rectified before the fire is used.
If there is an extractor fan fitted in a nearby room, repeat the test with the fan turned on and any interconnecting doors left open.
Hand over the instructions and explain to the user the operation and lighting procedure of the fire. Impress upon the user that servicing of the fire should be carried out at least every twelve months, and only by a qualified person.
