Important Safety Rules
The safety alert symbol ( ) is used with a signal word (DANGER, CAUTION, WARNING), a pictorial and/or a safety message to alert you to hazards. DANGER indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. WARNING indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. CAUTION indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, might result in minor or moderate injury. NOTICE indicates a situation that could result in equipment damage. Follow safety messages to avoid or reduce the risk of injury or death.
The manufacturer cannot possibly anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a hazard. The warnings in this manual, and the tags and decals affixed to the unit are, therefore, not all-inclusive. If you use a procedure, work method or operating technique that the manufacturer does not specifically recommend, you must satisfy yourself that it is safe for you and others. You must also make sure that the procedure, work method or operating technique that you choose does not render the generator unsafe.
Hazard Symbols and Meanings

WARNING
The unit must be installed in accordance to generally accepted low voltage wiring techniques.
To prevent possible injury, always de-energize the generator and transfer switch before making connections to the generator.
IMPORTANT: Read the warranty information and the FCC statement before using this product.
The performance of local and long distance telephone lines vary and may affect operation of this equipment. Therefore, it is important that this equipment be fully tested after installation to confirm telephone compatibility. Please see Testing your GenAlert in Maintenance for complete instructions.
Special Installation Considerations:
This equipment requires a single line telephone,
• but does not require this line to be dedicated for its use.
You must have Touch-Tone® telephone service
• for this equipment to properly operate.
This equipment will not work on pulse or rotary
• dialing telephone systems.
This equipment may not be compatible with some
• PBX (Private Branch eXchange ) or other multiline business telephone systems.
A dual plug adapter or “splitter” (not included),
• is required only if you share the same phone line through the connection of a single wall jack.
NOTICE: Connecting this equipment to a commercial telephone system may cause internal damage to both systems. This equipment can share a wall phone jack with a telephone.
3
IMPORTANT: DO NOT program emergency phone numbers for the police, fire or other emergency personnel or departments unless you have specific approval from such agencies. This equipment does not identify the location that is calling and therefore cannot provide an audible notification of what address this phone call originated from.
Statement of Use
GenAlert is designed to alert you by telephone if your generator either fails while running or fails to turn on. GenAlert automatically calls one phone number when the alarm is triggered and relays a factory recorded message.

Programming GenAlert
The programmed telephone number is the number you want your GenAlert to call if your home standby generator fails during operation. The phone number is remembered even if you disconnect the battery and the phone line from the unit.
You may program up to forty (40) digits in a phone number. The pound key (E) and star key (C) are used to program and test GenAlert.
Before programming, make sure your phone line is connected to GenAlert and the wall telephone jack.
Press and hold the pound key (E) on the
1. GenAlert’s keypad.
While holding the pound key (E), use the keypad
2. (B) to enter the telephone number you want GenAlert to call.
Keep holding down the pound key (E) until the entire phone number is entered.
BRIGGSandSTRATTON.COM8
Enter the telephone number exactly as you would if you were to dial that location on the telephone. In other words, enter a “1” and the area code if required.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT program phone numbers of emergency fire, police or ambulance services into GenAlert.
Release the pound key (E) after entering all the
3. digits of the phone number.
Star Key Function
To enter a five second pause in the phone number, press the star key (C) twice when entering the phone number in 2 above.
A pause counts as two digits of the total phone number. For every two star keys entered, there will be a five second pause.
If three star keys are entered in succession, the first two will be noted as the 5 second pause and the third star key will be the actual star key (C) played as part of the phone number.
If four star keys (C) are entered, GenAlert would pause the dialing sequence for 10 seconds.
To change the phone number, simply repeat the process with a new phone number. The old number will be overwritten.
Important Tips
Long Distance: Make sure you enter the phone
• number exactly like you would if you were to pick up the phone and call that number. Use a “1” and the proper area code if required.
Area Codes: Don’t forget to change your phone
• number if the telephone area code changes. Your GenAlert will continue to call to the stored phone number, even if incorrect. You may incur long distance charges if you do not change area codes appropriately.
Dialing “9”: Some phone systems require that
• you dial a “9” before the rest of the phone number in order to get an outside line. Simply include the “9” at the beginning of the phone number. You may need to add a pause after the “9” so GenAlert can wait for a dial tone.
Test Your GenAlert: It is important that you test
• your phone number as indicated in Testing Your GenAlert in Maintenance.
9
If the programmed phone number is to a
• monitoring service or a contractor, the GenAlert location can only be identified by “Caller ID”. The monitoring company will need to keep a record of your GenAlert location and the phone line cannot have caller id blocking.
During an Alarm
GenAlert will begin to call your programmed phone number when a generator failure occurs. The unit will continue to call either every 15 minutes or every 2 hours, depending upon your switch settings. GenAlert will continue to call until the alarm call out is canceled.
The receiving party will hear the message:
This is your remote monitoring system. There is an alarm condition at your remote monitored location. Please check conditions at your monitored location.”
GenAlert will repeat the message for a full minute, allowing it to be recorded on an answering machine or voice mail.
GenAlert continues to call your programmed phone number until the alarm call out is canceled.
Canceling the Alarm
After you have received an alarm call, call the monitored location where GenAlert is located and let the phone ring 5 times. (10 times if Switch #2 “Pick Up Ring Count” was set in OFF position). GenAlert will automatically answer and begin playing the alarm message.
By calling GenAlert and listening to the alarm message, you have successfully canceled the alarm call out. The alarm will remain active until the fault is repaired, but it will not call out.
Resetting GenAlert
GenAlert automatically resets to monitoring mode as soon as the alarm condition is corrected AND the alarm call-out has been canceled.
NOTICE: Accidental alarm cancelation may occur if anyone calls GenAlert while alarm is active.
To avoid accidental alarm cancelation, set the “Pick Up Ring Count” to 10 rings (see Installation) and have an answering machine or voice mail take incoming calls.
BRIGGSandSTRATTON.COM10
GenAlert & Voice Mail
The GenAlert can answer on either five or ten rings. GenAlert counts incoming rings over multiple calls. To ensure incoming calls go to your voice mail or answering machine first, set the number of rings that the GenAlert answers on to be greater than that of your voice mail or answering machine. For example, if your voice mails answers on 5 rings, set the GenAlert to answer on 10 rings.
Calling GenAlert
If you wish to call your GenAlert to either check the alarm condition or to cancel the alarm call out, you will need to place two or more calls to your monitored location and let the GenAlert count incoming rings over those multiple calls until the total “Pick Up Ring Count” is reached. For example, if your voice mail/answering machine is set to answer on 5 rings, your GenAlert should be set to answer on 10 rings. Therefore, you will need to place three phone calls to your monitored location in the following manner until
GenAlert has counted a total of 10 rings.
On the first call, let the phone ring four times and
1. hang up before the answering system answers. GenAlert has now counted four rings.
On the second call, let the phone ring four more
2. times and hang up before the answering system answers. GenAlert has now counted eight rings.
On the third call, let the phone ring until the
3. GenAlert answers. It should only take two or three more rings because the GenAlert has counted a total of ten rings over the three phone calls.
NOTICE: There is a time window of 150 seconds to make the consecutive cancellation calls before GenAlert resets it’s call counter.
NOTICE: A “Pick Up Ring Count” of 10 is advisable for telephone numbers that receive a large amount of incoming phone calls.
Voice Mail & the Programmed Number
If you have an answering machine or voice mail message system at the programmed phone number, the alarm message can be recorded by most systems. This will not cancel the alarm and GenAlert will continue to leave messages until the alarm is canceled. Some answering machines and voice mail systems, however, are not compatible with our alarm message and do not allow the message to be recorded. Please test your system to ensure compatibility.

Maintenance
Testing Your GenAlert
Testing programmed phone number.
Press and hold the star (*) key until you see the
1. red LED light up.
Release the star key.
2.
GenAlert will call the programmed number and play the prerecorded alarm message. Canceling the alarm for this test is not required.
Testing GenAlert Alarm.
The alarm goes off when the generator fails to run when it is needed. To simulate this failure the generator needs to be running to see the fault, then shuts down, followed by the GenAlert calling the programed number.
Simulate a fault by turning the generator circuit
1. breaker to the off position. The generator should shut down and display the fault.
The red LED will light up and GenAlert will then
2. call the programmed number and indicate an alarm.
Test Failure
If the test fails, first try reprogramming the phone number and repeat the test. If a test failure persists, refer to Troubleshooting.
Battery Replacement
Replace the battery every year. GenAlert does not notify for “low battery” conditions.
Remove battery when the unit is not in use.

Called the wrong number. Verify the right phone number.
I can’t change the alarm message.
GenAlert will not work on my multi-line business phone systems, PBX systems or digital phone systems?
GenAlert is designed this way. No cause.
GenAlert is designed to work only with a single phone line, found in most residential homes. Sharing a phone line with a phone, fax machine, or computer modem is acceptable as long as they are sharing a single phone line.
The alarm message is pre-recorded at our factory and cannot be changed.
Some PBX systems simply require a “9” to be dialed before calling the programmed number. GenAlert should be able to dial the “9” and the rest of the number. You may need to enter a pause after the 9 to wait for the dial tone before the rest of the number is dialed by the GenAlert.

FCC Statement
This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules and the requirements adopted by the ACTA. On the back of your GenAlert is a label that contains, among other information, the FCC registration number for this product. If requested, this number must be provided to the telephone company.
A plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring and telephone network must comply with the applicable FCC Part 68 rules and requirements adopted by the ACTA. A compliant telephone cord and modular plug is provided with this product. It is designed to be connected to a compatible modular jack that is also compliant. See Installation for details.
The Ring Equivalency Number (REN) is used to determine the number of devices that may be connected to a single telephone line. Excessive REN’s on a telephone line may result in the devices not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most but not all areas, the sum of REN’s should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of the number of devices that may be connected to a line, as determined by the total REN’s, contact your local telephone company.
The REN for this product is identified as part of the FCC product identifier shown on the label on the back of your GenAlert. The REN for other devices will be identified on a label on the product in the FCC
product identifier or listed separately. If there is a product identifier number, it will be in a format as US: AAAEQ##TXXXX. The ## is the REN number shown without a decimal point (e.g., 03 is a REN of 0.3).
If this dialer causes harm to the telephone network, the telephone company will notify you that temporary discontinuance of service may be required. Also, you will be advised of your right to file a complaint with the FCC if you believe it is necessary.
The telephone company may make changes in its facilities, equipment, operations or procedures that could affect the operation of the equipment. If this happens, the telephone company will provide advance notice in order for you to make necessary modifications to maintain uninterrupted service.
If trouble is experienced with your dialer, for repair or warranty information, please contact Briggs & Stratton Home Power Products LLC at 1-800-743-4115.
