VerifyEngine Oil Level
Thegenerator engine is shippedfrom thefactory filled with
oil (API SJor higher 10W-30). This allowsfor generator
operation in the widest rangeof temperature and climate
conditions. Beforestarting the engine, check oil leveland
ensurethat engineis serviced as described in Maintenance.
NOTICE Any attempt to crank or start the engine before it
has been properly filled with the recommendedoil could
result in equipment failure.
• Referto Maintenancefor oilfill information.
• Damageto equipment resulting from failure to follow this
instruction will void warranty.
NOTICE See Oilin the Maintenancesectionto review oil
recomendations.Verify provided oil inengine is the correct
viscosity for current ambienttemperature.
AddFuel
Fuel must meet these requirements:
• Clean,fresh, unleadedgasoline.
• A minimum of 87 octane/87AKI (91 RON).Forhigh
altitude use, seeHigh Altitude.
• Gasolinewith up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to
15% MTBE(methyl tertiary butyl ether) is acceptable.
,A WARNING Fueland its vapors areextremelyflammable
and explosivewhich could causeburns,
fire or explosionresulting in death,
serious injury and/or property damage.
WHENADDINGFUEL
• Turn generator engineOFFand let it cool at least 2 minutes
before removing fuel cap. Loosencapslowly to relievepressure

leaks. Replaceif necessary.
• DONOTlight a cigaretteor smoke.
1. Clean area around fuel fill cap, remove cap.
2. Slowly add unleaded gasoline (A) to fuel tank (B). Be
careful not to overfill. Allow about 1.5" (4 cm) of tank
space (C) for fuel expansion.
NOTICE Avoid generatordamage.
Failureto follow Operator's Manualfor fuel
recommendations voids warranty.
• DONOTuseunapprovedgasolinesuchasE85.
• DONOTmixoil in gasoline.
• DONOTmodifyengineto runonalternatefuels.
Toprotect the fuelsystemfrom gum formation, mix in a fuel
stabilizerwhen addingfuel. SeeStorage. All fuel is not the
same.If you experiencestarting or performanceproblems after
usingfuel, switch to adifferentfuel provideror changebrands.
This engineis certified to operateon gasoline. The emission
control system for this engineis EM(EngineModifications).
3. install fuel capand let any spilled fuel evaporatebefore
starting engine.
HighAltitude
At altitudes over 5,000 feet (1524 meters),a minimum
85 octane/ 85 AKI (89 RON)gasoline is acceptable.To
remain emissions compliant, high altitudeadjustment is
required. Operationwithout this adjustment wiii cause
decreasedperformance, increasedfuel consumption, and
increasedemissions. Seean authorizeddealerfor high
altitude adjustment information. Operationof the engine at
altitudes below 2,500 feet (762 meters) with the high altitude
kit is not recommended.

will power at the same time. Follow these simple steps:
1. Selectthe itemsyou will power at the sametime.
2. Totalthe rated(running) watts ofthese items. This is the
amount of poweryour generatormust produceto keep
your items running. SeeWattage ReferenceGuide.
3. Estimatehow many surge (starting) watts you will need.
Surge wattage is the short burst of power neededto
start electric motor-driven tools or appliancessuch asa
circular sawor refrigerator. Becausenot all motors start
atthe sametime, total surgewatts can beestimatedby
adding only the item(s) with the highest additionalsurge
watts to thetotal ratedwatts from step 2.

Window Air

Power Management
To prolong the life of your generatorand attacheddevices, it
is important to take care when adding electrical loadsto your
generator. There should be nothing connectedto the
generator outlets before starting its engine. The correct and
safe way to managegeneratorpower is to sequentially add
loads asfollows:
1. With nothing connectedto the generator, start the
engine as described inthis manual.
2. Plug in andturn on the first load, preferablythe largest
load you have.
3. Permit the generatoroutput to stabilize (engineruns
smoothly and attacheddeviceoperates properly).
4. Plug in andturn on the next load.
5. Again, permit the generatorto stabilize.
6. Repeatsteps 4 and 5for eachadditional load.

special care to consider surge loads in generator capacity,as
described above.

Maintenance
MaintenanceSchedule
Follow the hourly or calendarintervals, whichever occurs
first. More frequent serviceis required when operating in
adverseconditions noted below.
Emissions Control
Maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emissions
controldevices and systemsmay be performed by any
non-roadengine repair establishment or individual.
However,to obtain "no charge" emissions control service,
the work must beperformed by afactory authorizeddealer.
Seethe Emissions Warranty.
• Changeengine oil
• Cleandebris
• Checkengineoil level
• Serviceengineair cleaner'
• Changeengine oil'
• Servicespark plug
• inspect muffler andspark arrester
• Cleancooling system'
• Checkvalve clearance
Service more often under dirty or dusty conditions.
GeneralRecommendations
Regular maintenancewill improve the performance and
extend the life of the generator. Seeany authorizeddealer for
service.
Thegenerator's warranty does not cover items that have
been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive
full valuefrom the warranty, the operator must maintain the
generator asinstructed in this manual.
Someadjustments will needto bemade periodically to
properly maintain your generator.
All serviceand adjustments should be made at least once
eachseason. Follow the requirementsin the Maintenance
Schedulechart above.
NOTICE Oncea year you should clean or replacethe spark
plug and replacethe air filter. A new spark plug andcleanair
filter assure proper fuel-air mixture and help your engine run
better and last longer.
GeneratorMaintenance
Generatormaintenanceconsists of keepingthe unit clean
and dry. Operateand store the unit in a clean dry
environment where it wiii not be exposedto excessivedust,
dirt, moisture, or any corrosive vapors. Cooling air slots in
the generator must not become cloggedwith snow, leaves,
or any other foreign material.
NOTICE DONOTusewater or other liquids to clean
generator. Liquids canenter engine fuel system, causing
poor performance and/or failure to occur, in addition, if
liquid enters generator through cooling air slots, some of the
liquid will be retained in voids andcracks of the rotor and
stator winding insulation. Liquid and dirt buildup on the
generator internalwindings will eventually decreasethe
insulation resistanceof thesewindings.
Cleaning
Dailyor before use, look around andunderneaththe
generatorfor signs of oil or fuel leaks. Cleanaccumulated
debris from inside andoutside the generator. Keepthe
linkage, spring and other engine controls clean. Keepthe
areaaround andbehind the muffler free from any
combustible debris, inspect cooling air slots and openings
on generator. Theseopenings must be kept clean and
unobstructed.
Engine parts should be kept cleanto reducethe risk of
overheating and ignition of accumulateddebris:
• Usea damp cloth to wipe exterior surfaces clean.
NOTICE improper treatment of generator could damage it
and shorten its life.
= DO NOTexpose generator to excessivemoisture, dust, dirt, or
corrosive vapors.
• DONOTinsert anyobjectsthrough cooling slots.
• Usea soft bristle brush to loosen cakedon dirt or oil.
• Usea vacuum cleanerto pick up loose dirt and debris.
