Shared Interrupt Mechanism.
The shared interrupt mechanism is a way of using the
single interrupt line available to the PCI card efficiently. It allows
the serial ports on the PCI Mu ltiport Card to share o nly one IRQ
line. Latching of the first asserted interrupt and a priority encoding
system which queues any subsequent interrupt s, allows the driver
soft ware t o serv ice the p orts in a n int ellige nt and o rde rly man ner.
This prevents one port dominating the interrupt line at the expense
of other ports.
Configuring PCI M ultip ort R S232 Cards.
The PCI Quad and Lynx cards are fully “plug and play”,
and require no hardware configuration. They can be installed
"directly from the box".
Installing A PCI Multiport Card.
STEP 1: Turn the PC off, remove the plug from its socket and
detach all PC peripherals - mouse, keyboar d etc.
STEP 2: Remove the case.
Step 3 - Remove Bla nking Cover.

SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION
GUIDE
Introduction.
This section describes the software installation procedure
allowing the PCI Quad RS232 or PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 to be
configured within the DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and
Windows NT operating systems.
The setup procedures in this chapter assu me that your PC
has only COM1 pr esent.
Note: Due to the nature o f t he insta llation pro cedure, t here is litt le
or no difference between PCI Quad RS232 and PCI Lynx 8 Port
RS232 installation methods. Instances where differences do exist
are clearly marked.
Configuring Ports in Wind ows 95 a nd 98.
Although covering the installation of PCI Multiport cards
into the Windows 95 operating system, the procedure is also valid,
with only minor differences, in the Windows 98 Operating System.
The Windows 95 environment now supports up to 255
standard serial ports, RS232, RS422, RS485 etc.
To obtain a trouble free mix-and- mat ch o f the COM ports:
• Po wer up your PC after inserting your card or cards, as shown
in Chap t e r 2.
• Windows 95 should then load normally. During the booting
pro cess, Window s 95 will d etec t the c ard and yo u wil l brie fly
see a message box indicating the detection process.
Chapter 3 Page 10
Page 17

• Windows will then display the "Update Device Driver
Wizard", which asks you to “insert any disk which came w ith
the PCI card”. Insert the installation disk for Windows 95
provided with the PCI Quad RS232 and click Next.
• The Wizard sho uld then come up with the message: "Windo ws
found the following updated driver for this device: PCI Quad
RS232". Click Finish.
PCI Lynx 8 Port
RS232 users: This
messages displays as

•A " Copying Files…" window should now appear. Click OK
when it asks you to insert the disk.
• After copying the files Windows 95 will then detect each of t he
serial ports in turn and install them as MultiPort
communications ports.
If you then use the Device Manager (by clicking on
’System’ in the Control Panel) a window similar to one of the
following wi ll be d is pla yed:

and COM9 and above are not insta lled.
Selecting The Maximum Baud Rate.
The baud clock determines the maximum rate at which the
serial ports of the PCI Multiport card can communicate. The
standard PC serial ports allow baud rates up to a maximum of
115,200; however, both PCI Multiport cards can be set to use baud
rates of up to 230,400 and beyond.
•Double clicking a card entry under the "Multi-Function
Adapters", in Device Manager and select the Ser ial Solutions
tab. The Maximum Baud Rate settings are located at the
bot tom o f this window:
The default Maximum Baud Rate Setting is 115,200 baud,
which provides full backward compatibility with standard serial
ports. Any change to the baud rate settings here will affect allof the cards po rts. T able 3-1, below, lists the baud rates available
at the various Maximum Baud Rate Settings. Setting the card to a
higher baud rate requires connection to a device that supports this
higher rate. Whatever setting you use will be stored by the PCI
Multiport configuration software and set up again the next time
Windows is started.
It has been found during testing that the PCI Quad / Lynx 8
Port RS232 will operates correctly up to 230,400 baud at distances
of up to 10 meters.

described in the above section.)
• In t he Card’s Port field enter a value of 1, as this is the
first po rt of the PCI Quad RS 232 installe d .
• In Standard Settings:
• In the COM Base field, enter the value 0140 (this value
was returned by the BBCARDS program, as described
in the above section.)
Note: COM ports are defined with an i/o address range,
which in this case, begins at 0140 and all subsequent
ports have an i/o address that is 8 higher than the
previous. i.e. if COM2 has an address of 0140h, then
COM3 will have an address of 0148h, COM4 an
address of 0150h etc.
• In the IRQ field, enter the value 11 (this value was
returned by the BBCARDS program, as described in
the above section.)
• When you have finished, click on OK. A restart message will
be d isp la ye d ; to s ave o n ly r estar t whe n a l l fo u r p o r t s ha ve be e n
added and correctly configured.
• Repeat the above process to add the next 3 COM ports of the
PCI Quad RS232. For example, for the second po rt of the PCI
Quad RS232 (designated COM3) the SISR value of 0104 will
remain the same, the Card’s Port value will be 2 (the second
port of the Quad card), COM base will be 0148 and the IRQ
value is 11. After adding the remaining COM ports the COM
Ports Window will look similar to the following:

PCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232Software Configuration
Configuring Ports in DOS.
The DOS installation procedure consists o f 2 steps after the
PCI Quad RS232 card is inserted:
1. Determining the resources that the PCI Quad RS232 has
claimed.
2. Informing the Serial Solutions DOS device driver of those
resources.
Determining PCI Multiport RS232 Resources.
• Insert card into PC, as described in Chapter 2.
• Run BBCARDS.EXE, from the supplied DOS driver disk tit led
"Utility Disk" by typing the following:
%@"&&'%6(7
Where A:\ is the drive containing the supplied disk.
BBCARDS.EXE will return a string that looks similar to
the following (values contained in the string may differ in
individual PC’s due to resource availability):
Software ConfigurationPCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232
• Note down IRQ, I/O address and SISR (the SISR is the Shared
Interrupt Status Register, which is a read only register which
returns an index value that identifies which port on the card has
an interrupt awaiting servicing by the driver software.) In this
case:
The IRQ = 11
The I/O address = 0140
The SISR = 0104
NEWCOM.SYS Parameters.
The NewCOM.SYS device driver included with the PCI
Quad RS232 driver software is used to set up the card in DOS and
has the following syntax:
NEWCOM.SYS /A port address, /L SISR, IRQ, range /B numberbuffer /S buffer /H hardware handshake
Where /A port address specif ie s CO M p o rt nu mbe r fo llo w ed by a
hexadecimal address in the form /Ax,y where x is COM
port range and y is I/O address.
/L SISR, IRQ, range specifies SISR address, card interrupt and
COM port range. The COM port range specifies the COM
port(s). Range may be a single port OR a range of ports.
/B number buffer is used to set the number of pairs of
buffers to be allocated to port s and is a decimal number in
the range 1-maxport.
/S buffer Set size of all buffers in bytes, buffer is rounded
to the nearest power of 2 and must be a decimal number in
the range 32 to 32768. For any serial port opened two
buffers of size buffer are allocated, one for input and the
other for output.
/H hard ware handshake selec ts whic h har dw are han ds hak e

PCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232Software Configuration
type to use on the specified ports. This is used in the
follo wing manner: /H range, hs where range spec ifies t he
COM port or ports and hs selects handshake type.
Handshake types availa ble are:
Type 0 RS232 DTR/CTS - The PC only transmits
when CTS is input true. When the PC is able to
receive its sets DTR output true. The DSR and
DCD inputs are ignored. The RTS output line
is set true just in case the external serial device
needs a true signal.
Type 4 3 Wire Handshake - Really no handshake at all
since the PC transmits irrespective of the
handshake lines. The 3 wires are TxD, RxD and
Ground, no other lines are required. Thus the
CTS , DSR and DC D input s ar e igno re d. The RT S
and DTR output lines are set true just in case the
external serial device needs a true signal.
Note: If hardware handshaking is not specified in the
NEWCOM.SYS parameters, type 4, 3 Wire
Handshake is selected automatically.
Configuring and Installing N EW COM.SYS
To load the Serial Solutions for DOS device driver an entry
needs to be added to the CONFIG.SYS file. Any simple text editor,
EDIT for example, can edit the CONFIG.SYS file for example. The
installation procedure given below is for a PCI Quad RS232 as
COM 5 - COM8 and a PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 as CO M5 - CO M 12
The parameter required by the NEWCOM.SYS driver are
those returned by the BBCARDS.EXE application earlier. A brief
expla nation for the parameters required by NEWCOM.SYS follows:
Port Address.

COM ports 5,6,7 and 8 are defined, with an i/o address
range that begins at 0140h and all subsequent ports have an i/o
address that is 8 higher than the previous. i.e. if COM5 has an
address of 0140h, then COM6 will have an address of 0148h,
COM7 an address of 0150h etc.
PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 Users: /A5-12,0140
SISR, IRQ, Range.
/L 0104,11,5-8
0104h is the i/o address SISR, 11 is the IRQ and since the
COM port range is COM5 - COM8 range is entered as 5-8.
PCI Lynx 8 Port RS232 Users: /L 0104,11,5-12

8 buffers are defined, though only four ports are in use this is because buffers in DOS are assigned in a sequential order
from COM1. Since the PCI Quad RS 232 has been assigned COM
port values of 5 to 8, all preceding COM ports, must have buffers
assigned to t he m also.

CABLING.
Introduction.
This chapter gives details of the 9 and 25 pin RS232 pin out s,
cabling and connections, with informat ion on how to connect the
serial ports of two PCs, ho w to make a selftest loop back connect or
and the pinouts of the PCI Quad and Lynx 8 Port RS232 card
The RS232 Standard.
The RS232 standard is ancient in computer industry terms.
Introduced in 1962, it is now widely established. RS232 is a slow
speed, short distance, single ended transmission system (i.e. only
one wire per signal). Typical RS232 maximum cable length is 50
feet with a maximum data rate of 20K bits per second.

9 Pin D Serial Port RS232 Cables.
To connect to the AT style RS232 Serial Port you will need a
cable terminating in a 9 way female D connector. It is sound
practice to use cables with screws fitted that will allow you to
fasten the cable securely to the PC card.
In gener al, yo u will ne ed to make up a "cro ss o ver" cable t o
correctly interface the PC to the RS232 port of anot her computer
or device. Traditionally, making up the cross over cable has been
considered a black art. However, provided you have the pin outs
and handshake requirements of both sides of your RS232
DCD
Chapter 4 Page 37
Page 44
RS232 Pinouts and Port CablingPCI Quad / Lynx 8 Port RS232
connection, the cross over cable becomes a matter of common
sense. The cross over cable is simply to ensure that the right
signals going out of one RS232 port go into the appropriate lines
of the other RS232 port.
9 Pin D Serial Port Connection To Another PC.
Suppose we want to connect the AT style 9 pin D Serial Port
to the serial port of another IBM PC. See Figure 4-3.
1)Connect the earth lines.
Line 5 of Serial Port 2 to lines 1 & 7 of the other PC.
This gives the t wo devices a co mmon earth level.
2)Connect the Transmit and Receive l ines t ogether.
Line 3, TXD, Port 2 goes to line 3, RXD, of the other PC.
Line 2, RXD, Port 2 goes to line 2, TXD, of the other PC.
This a llows each to receive the data tr ansmitted by the
other.
3)Co nnect the Port 2 DTR line, pin 4 to the other PC DCD,
pin 8 and CTS, pin 5, lines.
Also, connect up the other PC DTR line, pin 20 to the Port
2 DCD, pin 1 and CTS, pin 8, lines.
This allows the receiving device to signal when it can no
longer accept data. The receiving device sets DTR false
when it is unable to receive any more data. The sending
device reads DTR on its CTS and DCD pins. It should stop
sending when CTS goes false.
4)Co nnect the Port 2 RTS line, pin 7, to the other PC DSR
line, pin 6.
Also, connect the other PC RTS line, pin 4, to the Port 2
DSR line, pin 6 .
This RTS line is used to let the other device know that it is
ready for data exchange.

9 Pin D Serial Port Loop Back Connector.
A loop back connector can be used to echo RS232 data
transmitted by a serial port back into its own RS232 receiver. In
this way, the function of the seria l port can be tested.
