ADDITIONAL SAFETY WARNINGS FOR VP131 CHARGER
Use only under adult supervision, keep out of the reach of children.
Ensure outlet is secured and completely intact. Do not plug charger into a loose wall outlet.
For best results, do not combine a silver label (NiCd) and a gold label (NiMH) battery pack
in the same tool as damage may result to the batteries.
BEFORE FIRST USE AND TIPS
• The VersaPak®battery stick is not fully charged when packed in the carton. Charge the battery in the Charger unit for at least 6 hours before first use. See “Charging the Battery”.
Be sure a VersaPak®battery is installed before using the Scrubber and the Battery Cover
is snapped firmly in place.
CHARGING THE BATTERY
If your battery arrives with a protective red cap already in place, be sure to remove the cap by simply pulling it off before attempting to charge the battery.
1. Plug in the Charger and insert the metal end of the battery into the Charger (See 5 & 6 in
call out illustration).
2. An indicator light will come on to show that the battery is charging and will remain lit as
long as the battery is in the Charger. If this is your first use, let the battery charge for 6 hours. After normal usage, your battery should be fully charged in 3 hours or less. If the battery is completely run down, you may have to charge it for up to 6 hours again.
3. While charging, the Charger may hum and feel warm to touch. This is normal.
4. If a battery does not charge properly:
• check the current at the outlet by plugging in a lamp or other appliance there to see if it will work,
• see if the outlet is connected to a wall switch which controls the power,
• move the Charger and battery to a surrounding air temperature of +40°F (5°C) to 105°F (40°C).
5. The battery should be recharged when it fails to produce sufficient power to clean. Typically, run time will be approximately 30 minutes, depending on use. DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE THE SCRUBBER with a depleted battery.
INSTALLING AND REMOVING THE BATTERY - FIG.
1. To install a battery, be sure you have removed the red protective cap by pulling it off. Keep the cap for use when storing the battery outside of the Charger (in a drawer, etc.).
2. Remove the Battery Cover by twisting and pulling it off. Slide the battery—metal side first— all the way into the unit. Replace the battery cover by fitting it over the end of the battery and pushing down until it snaps into place. (A)
3. To remove the battery, take off the Battery Cover and pull the battery stick out.
IMPORTANT: If some water leaks into the unit, it will not affect performance. However, should the unit or battery accidentally fall into water without the Battery Cover in place, shake out loose liquid and allow to air dry overnight.
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including the following:
PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THE UNIT.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE BATTERY AND CHARGER
Do not store or carry battery so that metal objects can contact exposed
metal end (Fig. 1). Do not place battery in aprons, pockets, drawers, etc. with loose nails, screws, keys, etc. without protective battery cap. The battery could short circuit causing fire, personal injury, or damage to the battery.
A red battery cap is provided for use when carrying the battery or
while battery is stored in a pocket, etc. Remove cap before placing battery in charger or Scrubber (Fig. 2).
Never attempt to open the battery for any reason. If the housing of
the battery breaks or cracks, immediately discontinue use and do not recharge.
Do not charge a battery if it is wet or shows any evidence of corrosion.
Do not incinerate the battery. It can explode in a fire. A small leakage from the battery cell
may occur under extreme usage, charging, or temperature conditions. This does not indicate a failure. However, if the outer seal is broken and this leakage gets on your skin: (1) wash quickly with soap and water or (2) neutralize with a mild acid such as lemon juice or vinegar, (3) if the liquid gets into the eyes, flush them immediately with clean water for a minimum of 10 minutes. Seek medical attention. NOTE: The liquid is a 20-35% solution of potassium hydroxide.
Do not use an extension cord. Plug the Charger directly into an electrical outlet.
Use the Charger only in a standard electrical outlet (120V/60Hz).
Charge the battery only with a VersaPak®Battery Charger.
Do not use Charger in wet or damp conditions. It is intended for indoor use only. Do not
use the Charger near sinks, or tubs. Do not immerse in water.
Do not allow the cord to hang over the edge of a table or counter or touch hot
surfaces. The Charger should be placed or mounted away from sinks and hot surfaces.
Do not use Charger for any uses other than charging VersaPak®batteries. Other batteries
may explode.
Do not operate Charger with damaged cord or plug — have them replaced immediately.

BATTERY REMOVAL AND DISPOSAL
This product uses a VersaPak®nickel-cadmium rechargeable and recyclable battery. When the VersaPak®battery stick can no longer be recharged, it should be removed from the unit and recycled. The battery must not be incinerated or composted. The battery can be taken for disposal to a Black & Decker Inc., Household Appliance Company-Owned or Authorized Service center. There are also some local retailers who are participating in a national recycling program (see “RBRC Seal“). Call your local retailer for details. If you bring the old battery to a Black & Decker Company-Owned or Authorized Service Center, the Center will arrange for recycling it. Or, if you wish, contact your local municipality for proper disposal instructions in your city/town.
THE RBRC™ SEAL
The RBRC™ (Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation) Seal on the nickel-cadmium battery (or battery pack) indicates that the costs to recycle the battery (or battery pack) at the end of its useful life have already been paid by Black & Decker. In some areas, it is illegal to place spent nickel-cadmium batteries in the trash or municipal solid waste stream and the RBRC program provides an environmentally conscious alternative.
RBRC in cooperation with Black & Decker and other battery users, has established programs in the United States and Canada to facilitate the collection of spent nickel-cadmium batteries. Help protect our environment and conserve natural resources by returning the spent nickel-cadmium battery to an authorized Black & Decker service center or to your local retailer for recycling. You may also contact your local recycling center for information on where to drop off the spent battery, or call 1-800-8-BATTERY.
