WARNING: Fire hazard. Do not store or carry battery so that metal objects can
contact exposed battery terminals.
For example, do not place battery in aprons,
pockets, tool boxes, product kit boxes, drawers, etc., with loose nails, screws, keys, etc.
Transporting batteries can possibly cause fires if the battery terminals inadvertently come in contact with conductive materials such as keys, coins, hand tools and the like.
The US Department of Transportation Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR) actually prohibit transporting batteries in commerce or on airplanes (i.e., packed in suitcases and carry-on luggage) UNLESS they are properly protected from short circuits. So when transporting individual batteries, make sure that the battery terminals are protected and well insulated from materials that could contact them and cause a short circuit.
STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Always store batteries charged.
2. The best storage place is one that is cool and dry away from direct sunlight and excess heat or cold.
3. Recharge discharged batteries as soon as possible after use or battery life
may be greatly diminished.
CHARGING PROCEDURE
1 . Plug the charger into an appropriate outlet before inserting the battery pack. 2 . Insert the battery pack into the charger (figure B) . Be sure the pack is fully
seated in the charger. While charging, the red (charging) LED will flash continuously (slowly) indicating that the charging process has started.
3 . The completion of charge is indicated by the red LED becoming solid. (approximately
5-6 hours) The pack is fully charged and may be used at this time or left on the c h a r g e r .
4 . Recharge discharged batteries as soon as possible after use or battery life
may be greatly diminished.
CHARGE INDICATORS Replace Pack:
These chargers are designed to detect certain problems that can arise with battery packs which would be indicated by the red light flashing at a fast rate. If this occurs, re-insert battery pack. If problem persists, try a different battery pack to determine if the charger is OK. If the new pack charges correctly, then the original pack is defective and should be returned to a service center for recycling. If the new battery pack gives the same trouble indication as the original, have charger tested at an authorized service center. Note: It may take as long as fifteen minutes for the charger to determine that the pack is d e f e c t i v e .
If the battery pack is too hot or too cold, the LED will alternately blink fast and slow, one flash at each speed and repeat.
DAISY CHAIN (FIGURE C)
Single and dual port chargers can be electrically connected in any order up to a maximum of 4 chargers. Each charger has a power-in cord (which plugs into the electrical outlet) and a power-out cord (which plugs into the next charger).
To connect chargers in a daisy chain:
1.) Plug the power-in cord into an electrical outlet.
2.) Remove the power-in cord from the next charger and plug in the power-out cord from the charger that is now plugged into the outlet.
3.) Repeat this process for the remaining chargers. Chargers that are daisy chained together operate independently as though each one
was plugged into a sperate outlet therefore a battery can be removed from anywhere along the daisy chain without affecting the other chargers.

LEAVING THE BATTERY IN THE CHARGER
The charger and battery pack can be left connected indefinitely with the LED illuminated. You may see the LED return to flashing (charging) state, as the charger will occasionally “top off “ the battery charge.
IMPORTANT CHARGING NOTES
1 . Longest life and best performance can be obtained if the battery pack is charged
when the air temperature is between 65°F and 75°F (18°C- 24°C). DO NOT c h a r g e the battery pack in an air temperature below +40°F (+4.5°C), or above +105°F (+40.5°C). This is important and will prevent serious damage to the battery pack.
Note: The charger will not charge a battery pack if the pack temperature is below approximately 32°F (0°C) or above 122F (50°C). The battery pack should be left in the charger and the charger will begin to charge automatically when the cell temperature warms up or cools down.
2 . The charger and battery pack may become warm to touch while charging. This is a
normal condition, and does not indicate a problem. To facilitate the cooling of the battery pack after use, avoid placing the charger or battery pack in a warm environment such as in a metal shed, or an uninsulated trailer.
3 . If the battery pack does not charge properly:
a . Check current at receptacle by plugging in a lamp or other appliance. b . Check to see if receptacle is connected to a light switch which turns power off
when you turn out the lights.
c . Move charger and battery pack to a location where the surrounding air temperature
is approximately 65°F - 75°F (18°- 24°C).
d . If charging problems persist, take the tool, battery pack and charger to your
local service center.
4 . The battery pack should be recharged when it fails to produce sufficient power on jobs
which were easily done previously. DO NOT CONTINUE to use under these conditions. Follow the charging procedure. You may also charge a partially used pack whenever you desire with no adverse affect on the battery pack.
5 . Foreign materials of a conductive nature such as, but not limited to, steel wool,
aluminum foil, or any buildup of metallic particles should be kept away from charger cavities. Always unplug the charger from the power supply when there is no battery pack in the cavity. Unplug charger before attempting to clean.
6 . Do not freeze or immerse charger in water or any other liquid.
WARNING: Shock hazard.
Do not allow any liquid to get inside charger.
C A U T I O N :
Never attempt to open the battery pack for any reason. If the plastic housing
of the battery pack breaks or cracks, return to a service center for recycling.
TO MAXIMIZE BATTERY LIFE:
1 . Remove the batteries from the charger after the charging is completed. 2 . Store the batteries at room temperature or below. 3 . Recharge discharged batteries within 1 week. Battery life will be greatly diminished
if the battery sits too long after being discharged.

HOW THE VPX POWER SOURCE WORKS
The VPX power source is an electronic device that converts low voltage DC (direct
90521888 VPX3101 1VPX Inverter 7/31/07 10:15 AM Page 9
10
current) electricity from a battery to 115 volt AC (alternating current) household power. In designing the VPX power source, Black & Decker has incorporated design techniques previously employed in computer power supplies. The result of these design innovations is a smaller, lighter and easier-to-use VPX power source.
The VPX power source converts power in two stages. The first stage is a DC-to-DC conversion process that raises the low voltage DC at the VPX power source input to 145 volts DC. The second stage is a MOSFET bridge stage that converts the high voltage DC into 115 volts, 60 Hz AC.
VPX POWER SOURCE OUTPUT WAVEFORM
The AC output waveform of this VPX power source is known as a modified sine wave. It is a stepped waveform that has characteristics similar to the sine wave shape of utility power. This type of waveform is suitable for most AC loads, including linear and switching power supplies used in electronic equipment, transformers, and small motors.
The modified sine wave produced by this VPX power source has an RMS (root mean square) voltage of 115 volts. Most AC voltmeters (both digital and analog) are sensitive to the average value of the waveform rather than the RMS value. They are calibrated for R M S voltage under the assumption that the waveform measured will be a pure sine wave.
These meters will not correctly read the RMS voltage of a modified sine wave. NonTRUE RMS meters will read about 20 to 30 volts low when measuring the output of this VPX power source. For accurate measurement of the output voltage of this VPX power source, use a TRUE RMS reading voltmeter such as a Fluke 87, Fluke 8080A, Beckman 4410 or Triplett 4200.
115 VOLT AC OUTPUT
CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF PROPERTY DAMAGE:
• Certain rechargeable devices are designed to be charged by plugging them directly into an AC receptacle. These devices may damage the VPX power source or the charging circuit.
• When using a rechargeable device, monitor its temperature for the initial ten minutes of use to determine if it produces excessive heat. If excessive heat is produced, this indicates the device should not be used with this VPX power source.
USING THE VPX POWER SOURCE
Insert a fully charged VPX battery pack into the VPX power source (see Installing and Removing the Battery Pack, Figure D) turn on the VPX power source by pressing the ON/OFF push button. Plug a USB and/ or AC powered device into the VPX power source.
The standard two-prong 115 Volt AC and USB Outlets allow the user to operate multiple devices simultaneously. Simply plug the equipment into the VPX power source and operate normally.
90521888 VPX3101 1VPX Inverter 7/31/07 10:15 AM Page 10
11
Note: Ensure wattage of all equipment simultaneously plugged into the VPX does not exceed 8 watts continuous.
120 VOLT AC OUTLET
1. Install a fully charged VPX battery pack into the VPX power source. Turn the VPX power source to the ON position. Status LED Indicator will be lit solid, indicating proper operation of the VPX power source.
2. Plug the (110/120 volt AC) appliance into the AC outlet of the VPX power source and operate normally (Figure F).
Note: The VPX power source will not operate appliances and equipment that generate heat, such as hair dryers, electric blankets, microwave ovens and toasters.
USB POWER PORT
1. Install a fully charged VPX battery pack into the VPX power source. Turn the VPX power source to the ON position. Status LED Indicator will be lit solid, indicating proper operation of the VPX power source.
2. Plug the USB-powered device into the VPX power sources USB Power Port and operate normally (Figure G).
Note: The VPX power sources USB Power Port does not support data communication. It only provides 5 volts/350mA DC power to an external USBpowered device.
RATED VERSUS ACTUAL CURRENT DRAW OF EQUIPMENT
Most electrical tools, appliances, electronic devices and audio/visual equipment have labels that indicate the power consumption in amps or watts. Be sure that the power consumption of the item to be operated is below 8 watts. If the power consumption is rated in amps AC, simply multiply by the AC volts (115) to determine the power.
Resistive loads are the easiest for the VPX power source to run; however, it will not run larger resistive loads (such as electric stoves and heaters), which require far more wattage than the VPX power source can deliver. Inductive loads (such as TVs and stereos) require more current to operate than do resistive loads of the same wattage rating.
For safety reasons, the VPX power source will simply shut down if it is overloaded. To restart the VPX power source, 1) remove the load then 2) turn the VPX power source OFF then back ON. Then plug devices back into the VPX power source making certain that the total load does not exceed 8 watts continuous.
PROTECTIVE FEATURES
The VPX power source monitors the following conditions: Low Battery Voltage – this condition is not harmful to the VPX power source but could
damage the VPX battery, so the VPX power source automatically shuts down when the VPX battery becomes low of charge. This will be indicated by a slow flashing red LED in the front panel before automatic shutdown of VPX power source.
Thermal Shutdown Protection – the VPX power source will automatically shut down when the VPX power source becomes overheated. This will be indicated by rapid flashing red LED. Immediately unplug the device or devices from the VPX power source. Manual reset achieved by turning the VPX power source OFF then back ON will be necessary after the VPX power source cools down to restart VPX power source.
Overload/Short Circuit Protection – the VPX power source will automatically shut down when an overload or short circuit occurs. This will be indicated by rapid flashing red LED. Immediately unplug the device or devices from the VPX power source. Manual reset achieved by turning the VPX power source OFF then back ON will be necessary to restart VPX power source.
OPERATING TIPS
The VPX power source should only be operated in locations that are: D R Y – Do not allow water or other liquids to come into contact with the VPX power
s o u r c e .
