T
he BLACK BOX®Monitor Access
Unit lets you connect Ethernet or Token Ring networks to one test device. It’s most commonly used with Network General’s Sniffer Server, but it also works with other types of control, such as the VT100 menu interface and ASCII control strings.
Models are available with 8 or 16 network ports. The 8-port Monitor Access Unit comes with RJ-45 connectors; and the 16-port model is available with either RJ-45 or DB15 connectors. Choose the one that’s right for your application.
For the RJ-45 models, all 8 leads are switched. These models connect to any network that uses RJ-45 connectors, such as Ethernet 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, shielded twisted-pair (STP), or unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) Token Ring networks.
For the DB15 model, all 15 leads are switched. It can be connected to any network that uses DB15 connectors, including those with RS-232, RS-422/RS-423 (RS-449),

Key Features
MONITOR ACCESS UNIT
RS-530, V.10/V.11, V.35, and Ethernet AUI interfaces.
For connecting test devices to networks, the Monitor Access Unit uses sealed latching relays. These relays ensure that the units operate transparent to protocol and speed. And, for added reliability, the relays feature gold-clad silver contacts. So, in the event of power failure, the latching relays are designed to remain in the last switched position.
The Monitor Access Unit’s front-panel has a power ON LED that lights when power is supplied to the unit.
To connect or disconnect test equipment to or from networks, use the front-panel monitor switches (MON1 and MON2). For operation with a Sniffer Server, the monitor switches are disabled. In a LAN configuration, a Monitor Access Unit can connect one Sniffer Server to any of 8 or 16 networks.
The front panel also has network switches that enable you to connect test equipment to networks. For operation with the
Sniffer Server, these switches are also disabled.
The Access Unit’s actual monitor ports and network ports are on its rear panel, along with its configuration DIP switches, a chassis ground stud, and a power socket.
Configuring the unit includes setting the DIP switches for the type of configuration that you’re installing as well as its baud rate and the monitor port identifiers. These same DIP switches are also used to configure the Monitor Access Unit to operate with a Network General Expert Sniffer Network Analyzer.
For testing purpose, you can disable the Monitor Access Unit to operate it manually (however, this can‘t be done if you use the Monitor Access Switch with a Sniffer Server).
The Monitor Access Unit comes with two monitor cables, a server communication cable, a power cable, software, and a users’ manual.
