R
emote password access to
serial communications equipment is yours with the Secure Rack Modem. It uses the Public Standard Telephone Network (PSTN) to transfer data at modem speeds of 33.6 kbps.
Two models are available: one
for 115 VAC and one for 48 VDC.
The modem can store up to 100 individual passwords and dialback numbers in non-volatile memory. Designed for remote sites, the modem always resets itself to answer on the specified number of rings. The modem is also set to a fixed baud rate at the modem port.
Securely access serial communications
equipment remotely over the PSTN.
Key Features
SECURERACKMODEM
No external AT commands are required to configure the Secure Rack Modem upon power-up, so you can easily use it with equipment that cannot send an AT setup string.
Password and/or Dial-Back Entry
The user directory stores up to 100 user names with individual password and optional dialback number. When the modem answers, it sends an Enter Password prompt. If the caller enters the correct password, the modem opens the path to the connected equipment. If the directory password field contains a dialback number, the modem will hang up after receiving the password, dial the number, and open the connection path when the called modem answers.
Access Tracking
An audit trail log tracks valid and/or invalid password connections, the time and date of each connection and the duration of the call. The modem stores a snapshot of the last 100 connections. Only the system administrator can view this snapshot.
Local or Remote Configuration
You can configure the system locally via a serial DB9 console port on the modem. Alternately, the system administrator can configure the modem remotely. This allows the administrator to communicate to a secondary serial device other than the modem port, such as a reboot switch.

Remote dialup management, direct connection: The Secure Rack Modem provides network administrators with a secure way of dialing into a remote site and connecting directly to a network element for remote management. The most common network element is a router or UNIX
®
machine.
Remote dialup management, sharing devices: The rack modem can
communicate with a remote port sharing device; this allows the administrators to use one phone line and one secure rack modem to communicate with several network elements at the site. The most common sharing devices are terminal servers such as Cisco 2611, Lucent PortMaster, Xylan, or the Network Power Switch (SWI069A) from Black Box.
