2. Introduction
2.1 Description
The 100BASE-TX to 100BASE-FX Media Converter Transmitter and Receiver extends 100BASE-TX UTP over a single strand of single-mode fiberoptic cable. You’ll need one transmitter and one receiver. The LH1709A-SCTS transmitters work with the LH1710A­SCRS receivers to extend your link up to 12.4 miles (20 km), and the LH1711A-SCTS transmitters work with the LH1712A-SCRS receivers to extend the link twice as far (up to 24.9 miles).
An MDI/MDI-X button allows the media converter to connect directly to either a workstation, switch, or hub using crossover or straight-through cable.
The converter also autosenses half- or full duplex mode configuration for the 100BASE-FX fiber port, and includes a disable switch for this function.
Autonegotiation support allows the converter to connect to N-Way switches.

3. Installation
3.1 MDI/MDI-X Connection
Before plugging in and installing your media converter transmitter and receiver, you’ll need to set the MDI/MDI-X button on each converter. This button selects whether you need to use crossover or straight­through twisted-pair cabling to connect the RJ-45 ports on the 100BASE-TX portion of your network. (See Figure 3-1.) Simply set the button as described in Table 3-1.

When the button is pressed in, MDI-X is selected. When the button is out, MDI is selected.

3.2 Autonegotiation (N-Way) Switch
Once you’ve set the MDI/MDI-X button on the transmitter and receiver converters, you’ll need to set the Autonegotiation (N-Way) switch on each converter. See Figure 3-2.

Use the ON/OFF Autonegotiation switch to enable or disable autonegotiating 10- or 100-Mbps speed and half­or full-duplex operation.

When the switch is ON, autonegotiation operation mode is enabled.
When the switch is OFF, autonegotiation operation mode is disabled. Set the switch to OFF when connec­ting to an autosensing, not an autonegotiating, switch.
NOTE
An autonegotiating switch automatically detects and adjusts for 10- or 100-Mbps operation AND full- or half-duplex operation. An autosensing switch detects and adjusts for 10- or 100-Mbps, but does NOT adjust for full- or half­duplex operation.
NOTE
If you have any of the following problems, please check to see if the N-Way switch is properly set.
1. The Link LED is not lit and the connection cannot be established.
2. The Link LED is lit and the connection is OK, but the converter cannot transmit or receive data.
3. The converter functions properly for awhile, then it does not work. If you power off/on the converter, then it works properly again.

Once you’ve set the MDI/MDI-X buttons and N-Way switches on the Transmitter and Receiver, you’ll need to determine which application you’ll use. See Figures 3-3 through 3-5.

3.4 Installing the Converter
NOTE
You’ll need one Media Converter Transmitter and the corresponding Media Converter Receiver. See Section 2.1.
After you set the MDI/MDI-X button on both the Transmitter and Receiver converters as described in Section 3.1, set the Autonegotiation (N-Way) switches as explained in Section 3.2, and determine how you will use your converters as shown in Section 3.3, you’ll need to place the converters on a desktop or mount them on a wall. Next, power on the converters. Connect one of the converters to a 100BASE-TX device or network segment. Then connect the corresponding converter to a 100BASE-TX device or network segment. Finally, connect the Transmitter or Receiver to the corresponding Transmitter or Receiver via one strand of single-mode fiberoptic cable. Follow the steps listed below to install the Transmitter and the corresponding Receiver.
1. For desktop installation, affix the four non-skid rubber feet to the bottom of each of the converters.

For wallmount installation, use the underside of the converters as a template to measure and mark out the position of the holes onto the surface where you will install the converters. Then use the two mounting screws provided to mount each of the converters firmly in place.
2. Connect the appropriate power supply for your country to the power connector on the side of each converter. Plug the power supply into a suitable power outlet.
3. Power on the converters. The power LED should light. If it does not, make sure that the power cable is plugged in properly.
4. Make sure that the Category 5 straight-through twisted-pair cables between the 100BASE-TX device (hub or switch) and each converter is no longer than 328 ft. (100 m).
5. Connect one end of the cable to the RJ-45 jack on one of the converters.
6. Connect the other end of the cable to the RJ-45 jack on the 100BASE-TX device.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the other converter.

8. Connect one end of a single strand of single-mode fiber cable to the SC connector on the converter.
9. Connect the other end of the fiber cable to the SC connector on the corresponding converter (Transmitter or Receiver).
Installation is complete.

4. LED Indicators
Once your 100BASE-TX to 100BASE-FX Media Converter Transmitter and Receiver are properly installed, they operate maintenance-free.
Several LEDs tell you the status of the converters and the network at a glance. See Figures 4-1 and 4-2.

• (2) Link LEDs light when receiving link pulses from a compliant device.

5. Troubleshooting
5.1 Calling Black Box
If you determine that your 100BASE-TX to 100BASE-FX Media Converter Transmitter or Receiver is malfunctioning, do not attempt to alter or repair the unit. It contains no user-serviceable parts. Contact Black Box at 724-746-5500.
Before you do, make a record of the history of the problem. We will be able to provide more efficient and accurate assistance if you have a complete description, including:
• the nature and duration of the problem.
• when the problem occurs.
• the components involved in the problem.
• any particular application that, when used, appears to create the problem or make it worse.

5.2 Shipping and Packaging
If you need to transport or ship your 100BASE-TX to 100BASE-FX Media Converter Transmitter and Receiver:
• Package it carefully. We recommend that you use the original container.
• If you are shipping the media converter for repair, make sure you include everything that came in the original package. Before you ship, contact Black Box to get a Return Authorization (RA) number.
