OVERVIEW
Now multiple modems can share a single telephone line,
saving your company the expense of adding extra lines.
The BLACK BOX
®
Modem Router Switch enables you to switch inbound modem calls from remote callers or dialback modems between four or eight user-selected modems attached to PCs, servers, and other DTEs in your office.
Although primarily designed for modems, it also works with voice, fax, or other analog switching applications and can even reboot your PCs using the optional AC Power Strip.
We offer the switch with one telco-line connection and four or eight modem ports, or two telco-line connections and eight modem ports.
For outbound calls, the device enables you to share a single phone line among many devices. Any modem may bid for the available telco line simply by going off-hook. If the line is tied up by another inbound or outbound call, the bidding modem receives no dial tone.
With inbound calls, callers enter a password and the number of the port that they want to connect to. This can be done manually using any touchtone phone or by appending it to the dial string for dial modem applications.
For added security, you can purchase an optional matchbook-sized Remote-User Security Key for each remote user. That way, you can program the switch to allow only remote keyholders access to all or a limited number of ports.
The key contains an eight-position rotary switch that
remote callers connect to their modems. It’s used to determine which port will be accessed. When the remote modem connects to the Modem Router Switch, the key performs an encrypted handshake with the switch. It then switches the call to the selected port.
In the secure mode, any inbound calls received without
the security key attached are aborted.
Each Modem Router Switch contains a unique ID code and a user-selected ID, which are transferred to the key when programming the switch. This prevents the key from being used on other systems—or other systems’ keys from being used on yours.
The Modem Router Switch also features an eight-position rotary switch used to select between touchtone and secure modes, and four-bit DIP switches used to program and secure the device.
The 6-Outlet AC Power Strip features an enhanced AC surge protection circuit. The strip allows a DTE to power on when a remote user calls and selects the DTE’s port. It powers off when the call is completed. The strip also recognizes additional touchtone commands used to override the automatic on/off feature.
