Input Connections through RCA
The AV Brick Amplifiers have inputs that are designed to accept line level audio from preamplifier or receiver RCA output connections. There are two RCA inputs from the preamplifier’s line level outputs, one left (white) and one right (red) which correspond to the left and right outputs on the preamplifier. There are many uses for the brick amplifiers. Two are shown.

Level Control
The AV 30.2, 60.2 and 100.2 have back panel level controls. Two volume controls are provided on the back of the AV amplifiers allowing for separate control of the left and right signals. The outer level control adjusts the volume of the right channel. The inner level control adjusts the volume of the left channel.
One option is using the output from Zone E on a CT 600.1 going into the Audio Input on the AV Amplifier.
Another option would be to use the Zone B outputs from a Ref 50 S2 to the Audio Input on the AV Amplifier.

Output Connections
The AV brick amplifiers connect to speakers using a 4-position Phoenix connector. Speaker connections are run from the amplifier to the speakers. Unplug the connector from the rear of the receiver, strip the speaker wire approximately 1/4” and insert the bare end into the gate on the connector. Use a small, flat blade screwdriver to tighten the connection to each conductor. Connectors accommodate up to 12 gauge wire.
Make sure to observe polarity as you hold the connector upside down to connect Left and Right as shown. Two guide tabs also insure proper orientation.
As a precaution, insure that the power switch on the amplifier’s back panel is
in the ‘off’ position and AC power is disconnected before making any connections.
Connect the audio cables from the preamplifier’s audio outputs to the ampli-
fier input channels using RCA interconnects.
Connect all common controls if using a trigger from the preamplifier to the
amplifier.
Connect all RJ-45 connections if connecting more than one brick amplifier.
Connect the wires from your speakers to the appropriate output channels on
the amplifier. It is essential that correct polarity is observed in all connections.
Double-check all connections.
Locate the AC power cord provided with the amplifier and plug it into the
power input receptacle in the rear panel. Make sure the back panel power switch is off.
Do not connect to the AC power until speaker connections are complete!
Turn on the preamplifier and then turn on the amplifier using the power
switch on the back panel (in this order). Set the source on the preamplifier to the source input that is connected. Turn the volume up slowly on the amplifier and listen for music from all channels.

Control Triggers
A control (trigger) system is provided on the AV brick amplifiers to allow remote switching of the amplifier’s standby on/off feature. The control input is designed to operate with a source (trigger) of at least 4VDC (less than 1mA). The signal sent from the control output is +5VDC (up to 50 mA) to trigger other devices.
The control trigger is also sent through the RJ-45 connection when connecting multiple AV amplifiers. When using any control trigger to send the unit into standby state (from minijack or RJ-45 connection) the CTRL I/O dip switch has to be enabled. The status light on the back of the AV brick amplifiers will turn off when the amplifier is in standby state. All B&K A/V receivers and preamplifiers utilize control output triggers to easily integrate an amplifier into an audio system.
Shown below is an AV amplifier receiving signal and control output from Zone B on a Reference 50. It also shows the control output on the AV amplifier being used to trigger another device. Please see Input and Output Connections through RJ-45 for more information on the RJ-45 connectivity.
Note: The control input voltage is intended for standby on/off control only. For amplifier operation, each amplifier must have its own source of AC power.

another
device
When using the control in either from 1/8” minijack or RJ-45 connections, the DIP switch labeled CTRL IN MUST be enabled. Otherwise the amplifier WILL NOT be looking for a 12V trigger.

Power and Amp Status LED
The “Power” LED on the back of the AV amplifier shows whether or not the unit has power. If the LED is not lit, please check AC power connections, the Main AC fuse and the Power Switch.
The “Amp” LED on the back of the AV amplifier shows the state of the unit. The status LED shows the following:
Normal - When the unit is in normal use, the blue Power LED would be on and the Amp Status LED would be green.
Standby - When the unit is in standby the Amp Status LED is off. The unit would still have hard power, so the blue Power LED would still be on.
Limit - When the unit is under conditions of having too much of a signal, the Amp Status LED will turn red. The audio from the amplifier may also clip, distort, etc.
Temp - When the unit is being overheated the Amp Status LED would be yellow. Please check ventilation of the amplifier.
Mono Usage
The AV amplifiers have the ability to output a signal from both amplifier channels with only one input. Either the left or right input can be used and the signal would be sent simultaneously from the left and right amplifier channels. Set the MONO DIP switch to the ON position. Shown below is the AV Amplifier connected using the right input but either input can be used.

Input and Output Connections through RJ-45
The AV Brick Amplifiers have RJ-45 inputs that are designed to connect multiple AV amplifiers. A straight through CAT-5 cable is needed to send signal and a optional control output from one AV amplifier to another. When using the RJ-45 input from one to another, signal is always sent. If a trigger is to be sent from one brick amplifier to another when using the RJ-45 connection, set the RJ-45 I/O switch AND the CTRL IN to the ON position on BOTH amplifiers as shown. Shown below is a total of three Brick Amplifiers connected with the RJ-45 connection. The source comes into the first amplifier and the same signal is sent to the other amplifiers from the output of the first amplifier to the input of the second and so forth.
From Preamplifier
AV Amplifier
AV Amplifier
AV Amplifier
Note: Up to eight separate AV Brick Amplifiers can be connected by the RJ-45 Input and Output connections. The max length of total CAT-5 cable can be up to 300 feet from the RJ-45 output of the first AV amplifier to the RJ-45 input on the last AV amplifier.
RJ-45 Input/Output Drive Pinout
It is suggested to ONLY use the RJ45 Inputs and Outputs to connect multiple AV Brick Amplifiers.
CAT-5 RJ-45 pinouts use the T568B standard.
11
DIP Switches
Each amplifier has a set of DIP Switches used for configuration purposes. The function of each is described below:
RJ-45 I/O - When using the RJ-45 Inputs and Outputs, the DIP switch would be enabled as shown to send a trigger signal. Also, when using the control trigger through RJ-45, the CTRL I/O DIP switch would have to be enabled as shown.
MONO—Amplifiers with the MONO DIP switch set to ON will have the sum of the selected audio inputs processed into a single mono source for both inputs. When mono is not desired, or independent channel amplification is necessary, the MONO switch must be set to OFF.
SENSE - The amplifier will sense an audio signal from the RCA Audio inputs or from the RJ-45 inputs. The Amp Status LED will turn off when no audio signal is detected and turn green when detecting an audio signal from either input.
CTRL IN - When a trigger is needed to take the amplifier in and out of standby state, the CTRL IN DIP switch would be enabled. This applies to both the 1/8” minijack control input and RJ-45 control input. The brick amplifiers require at least 4VDC and require less than 1mA of current of trigger signal.
Note: The ON (enabled) position would be in the DOWN position on the AV Brick Amplifiers. To disable the function, the DIP switch would be in the UP position.
Faceplate Options
There are a few faceplate options for connecting multiple AV brick amplifiers to fit in a rack space.
2U Brick Amplifier Mounting Plate - 3.5” by 19” Faceplate to mount up to 3 AV brick amplifiers 4U Brick Amplifier Mounting Plate - 7” by 19” Faceplate to mount up to 6 AV brick amplifiers Wall Mounting Bracket - mount an AV brick amplifier from either the left or right side
To change the faceplate on the AV brick amplifiers, use a 1/8” hex screwdriver.
