1. Preliminary remark
Dear User,
By purchasing your Bischoff & Bischoff Pyro Start Plus folding
wheelchair, you are getting a top German product which sets new
standards in terms of flexibility. The wheelchair was designed to offer
you a lot of benefits and to meet your needs. The many varied setting
options and the optimum adjustability in terms of seat height, seat
depth and lower leg length means the Pyro Start Plus can be adjusted
to your individual body size. The Pyro Start Plus is made for both indoor
and outdoor use.
The wheelchair is offered in two models, Pyro Start Plus and Pyro
Start Plus SL. The Pyro Start Plus SL permits improved adaptability for
persons of large body height due to its greater seat height, seat depth,
and backrest height.
These operating instructions intend to help you to familiarise yourself
better with the operating and the handling of your wheelchair. Before
using your new wheelchair for the first time, please read and follow
the instructions in this manual carefully. The instruction manual is an
integral and necessary part of the wheelchair. This is why you should
keep it close by and include it when passing on the wheelchair to
someone else.
For visually impaired users, this document is available as a PDF file at
our website www.bischoff-bischoff.com.
1.1. Signs and symbols
Important! This is especially useful information on
a given subject.
Warning! These are especially safety-relevant
instructions. Follow the directions in the manual!
2. Important safety instructions
2.1. General safety instructions
• To avoid falls and dangerous situations, you should first practice
driving your new wheelchair on level, unobstructed ground. We
recommend having an assistant with you.
• The accompanying person should be physically and mentally
capable of operating a wheelchair.
• Never use the wheelchair under the influence of alcohol or other
drugs.
• Please make sure that all parts have been properly installed before
using the wheelchair.
• Never lift up the wheelchair at parts which are not fixed firmly (the
armrests or legrests).
• Make sure that the floating axle of the rear wheels are tightly in the
axle holder, otherwise there is risk of injuries.
• Please note, displacing the center of gravity by shifting the body
or by adding loads may increase the risk of tipping to the side or
backwards.
• Please seek the help of an assistant person when going over
obstacles, steps, etc. Use the tip assist (see overview of wheelchair)
to tip the wheelchair appropriately.
• Steps and larger obstacles may only be crossed with the help of at
least two assisting persons. For this, use lifting points 1 and 2 (see
Bischoff & Bischoff GmbH | 12.05.2016

EN
overview of the wheelchair). If equipment such as ramps, lifts or
step climbing aids are available, these should be used.
• When driving on an incline or slope, it is necessary to be aware that
a risk of tipping exists even at low angles, depending on the axle
position setting. The use of anti-tippers is highly recommended.
• Avoid running against obstacles (steps, kerbs) without braking or
moving down steps.
• Avoid using on uneven, loose surfaces.
• When getting into or out of the wheelchair, apply both parking
brakes.
• All road traffic regulations must be observed when driving on
public roads.
• The passive lighting (reflectors) of your wheelchair must always be
visible to other road users.
• The wheelchair may not be used for transport of more than one
person or any additional load. Make sure to only use it for the
intended purpose.
• You must not use the handbrake to stop the wheelchair.
• When braking at fast speeds or on long downward slopes when
using the push rims, fingers and hand surfaces become hot.
Caution! Danger of burning!
• We recommend leather gloves for outdoor use. These increase grip
and protect fingers and hands from dirt and injury at the same
time.
• Please note, the upholstery will heat up if directly exposed to
sunlight and may cause injuries to your skin when touched.
Therefore you should cover these parts or protect the wheelchair
from exposure to direct sunlight.
• Please note, the frame and pad parts may cool down significantly
in winter. If possible, do not park the wheelchair outdoors in cold
weather.
• The dimensions of the wheelchair exceed the recommended values
of DIN EN 12183:2014/A.1 and PRM TSI Annex M in terms of size
and manoeuvring range.
• When transferring between wheelchair and bed, always make sure:
• both parking brakes are applied
• the side part on the side for getting in/out is swung
backwards.
• the foot plates (for getting in/out) are folded upwards, swing
inwards/outwards or are removed.
2.2. Anti-tip wheels (optional)
The anti-tip wheels prevent the wheelchair from tipping backwards.
Please note, driving with anti-tip wheels on uneven ground, lift
platforms and ramps is only possible to a limited extent. Ensure
sufficient clearance above, below and on the sides.
2.3. Use on public roads
The wheelchair is designed for indoor and outdoor use. Please keep in
mind that you are using public roads and therefore please observe all
road traffic regulations.
Do not endanger other road users through inconsiderate driving, especially on walkways.
2.4. Purpose
The wheelchair is made solely to increase mobility and to transport
people with impaired mobility in accordance with the above mentioned
indications. The maximum user load is 125 kg for the Pyro Start Plus
model and 150 kg for the Pyro Start Plus SL model.

4. Assembly and adjustments
You can carry out the adjustments of your wheelchair yourself with a
little manual dexterity. You need a set of 5 mm to 8 mm Allen keys and
ring spanners, SW10 and SW13. If you have any queries, please contact
your mobility dealer.
Please be careful of your fingers when making
2
adjustments. Risk of entrapment!
4.1. Folding and unfolding
Delivery
Your new B+B wheelchair is delivered fully assembled and folded in an
original B+B box.
3
To avoid damage during transport, plug-in attachable parts are
delivered under separate packaging (see fig. 2).
Unfolding
Place your wheelchair next to you. Tip it towards you until the load is
taken off one drive wheel (see fig. 3).
4
Now press on the seat tube nearest to you with the flat of your hand so
as to unfold the wheelchair (see fig. 4).
Folding
Place your B+B wheelchair next to you. Tip it by pulling the backrest
towards you, until the load is taken off the opposite drive wheel.
At the same time, pull the seat cushion upwards until the chair is
completely folded (see fig. 6).
5
To avoid injuries, do not hold the wheelchair at the
armrest while tilting If legrests are fitted, the foot
plates should first be folded up.
4.2. Legrests
6
4.2.1 Legrests with foot plate
Both legrests are supplied with the foot plates fitted. The foot plates on
both legrests can be folded upwards in the sitting position.
4.2.2 Angle-adjustable foot plates
The angle of the foot plates can be adjusted:
7
• To do so, unscrew the Allen screw (see fig. 8). Adjust the foot plate
to the required position by rotating the toothed ring.
• Tighten the Allen screw (see fig. 8) again.
When unfolding, please make sure your fingers
remain on the seat belt. Otherwise there is a risk
of trapping them!

4.2.3 Fitting the legrests
• Hold the upper part of the legrest that it points outwards. Activate
the handle and now push the legrest with the guide profile into the
hole in the frame (see fig. 9).
• The legrest is now simply folded forward which locks it
automatically into place.
9
Check the legrests are firmly attached before setting
off!
4.2.4 Removing the legrests
To transport your wheelchair as compact as possible, you can remove
legrests completely along with the foot plates (see fig. 10).
10
• Pull the handle in order to open the locking mechanism.
• Swing the legrest 90° outwards and pull it upwards (see fig. 10).
4.2.5 Swinging the legrests away
To make it as easy as possible to get into and out of your B+B folding
wheelchair, if necessary you can simply swing the legrests away either
outwards or inwards, without having to remove them (see fig. 10).
• Pull the handle. This opens the locking mechanism.
• Now you can swing the legrest away, outwards or inwards.
• If necessary, fold the foot plates upwards first.
To return to the original position, simply swing the legrest forwards
until it locks into place.
When standing up from the wheelchair, you shall never stand on the
foot plates under any circumstances!
4.2.6 Adjusting the legrest length
The standard adjustment which can be made to the legrest length is a
total of 80 mm in 5 x 20 mm steps. To do so, remove the socket head
screw (4 mm Allen screw) and adjust the legrest as required (see fig.
11).
4.3. Side parts
In order to be able to get in / out more easily, both side parts and
the arm rests can be swung backwards. Activate the locking lever
using light finger pressure (see fig. 12) and swing the side part away
backwards at the same time.
Do not use the side parts to lift up the
wheelchair!
To lock the side part, fold it forwards and allow it to click into place
with light pressure on the armrest (see fig. 13).
When swinging the side parts, ensure that no articles
of clothing or other items can get jammed. Check the
side parts are firmly attached before starting to use
the wheelchair.

The arm supports for the side parts (desk/long) are fitted as desk
(short) on delivery.
• You can change the arm supports to the long setting in just a few
steps. First, remove the fixing screws on the underside. You can then
push the arm supports forwards and fix them again once they are
14
in the required position (see fig. 14).
• For the height adjustment of the armrests, first remove the fixing
screws (see fig. 14). The height can be adjusted in four stages by
using adapters. In the lowest setting (see fig. 15), all the adapters
are fixed under the support. The more adapters you attach above
the support, the higher the armrest is. In the highest setting, all the
adapters are above the support (see fig. 16).
15
4.4. Seat
4.4.1 Seat height
You can adapt the seat height to your individual needs in just
a few steps.
1. Height of the driving wheel
There are 4 positions to allow the seat height to be adapted to the
user‘s requirements. For the lowest one, the castor bushing must be
turned and fitted on the other side.
Driving wheel and steering wheel must be in the same position in each
case. TOP – MIDDLE – BOTTOM
• Take the driving wheels off by using the floating axles.
• Loosen the screws at the adapter (Allen key, SW 4 and ring spanner
SW 10) and pull them out completely.
• Place the adapter at the required seat height.
• Insert the screws into the adapter again and tighten up the screws
again.
17
16
Place the steering wheel in the same hole position
as the drive axle. This is the only way to ensure
the directional stability of the wheelchair

90°
2. Height of the front wheel
• • First, remove the masking on the optional drill holes (see Fig. 18).
• • Loosen the axle (Allen key, SW 4) and take it out completely.
• • Place the steering wheel in the right position for the
• required seat height.
• • Reinsert the axle into the steering fork and tighten it up
• again.
18
3. Angle of the steering wheel axle
By changing the height of the driving wheel or front wheel, the angle
of the steering wheel axle can also be altered. However, this should
always be at the correct angle (90°) to the floor (see Fig. 19). First,
loosen the locking mechanism by loosening both screws on the inside
(see Fig. 20). Move the front wheel to the required position and then
tighten the fixing screws up again.
19
4. Adjusting the parking brake
When the driving wheel height is changed, the knee lever
brake must be readjusted (see 4.6).
4.4.2 Seat angle
If you incline the seat of the wheelchair backwards, this means you are
20
seated more deeply and firmly in the chair. To lean the seat backwards,
you have to move the floating axle to a higher position. If you want to
incline the seat forwards, fix the floating axle in a lower position. The
floating axle is fixed in the same way as in 4.8.
4.5. Wheelbase
Caution, risk of tipping! If you move the driving
wheel forwards or the backrest backwards, this
significantly increases the risk of tipping. Anti-tip
wheels or an extended wheelbase are then necessary.
Check the settings first with a helper. Only
use settings that you feel safe with.
Extending the wheelbase increases the stability and equilibrium of
the wheelchair. On the other hand, if the wheelbase is reduced, this
then improves manoeuvrability. A reduction of the wheelbase is only
advisable for practised drivers. To adjust the wheelbase, loosen the
wheel suspension, which is fixed with two screws and then attach
it again the other way round. Make sure that all screws are firmly
tightened.
When the wheelbase is changed, it is absolutely
essential to adjust the parking brake afterwards!

4.6. Brakes
Operating the parking brake
To lock the brake, simply push the brake lever forwards until it clicks
into place (see fig. 21). To release the locking brake again, simply pull
the brake lever backwards (see fig. 22).
Adjusting the parking brake
If you notice that the available braking efficiency is no longer sufficient
21
or is uneven, you must do as follows:
• Check the tyre tread depth. At the same time, check for even wear
of the tyres. If the tread depth in the middle of the tyre is < 1 mm,
the tyre must be changed. If you have the necessary technical
knowledge, you could change the tyre yourself. If you do not feel
confident to do this yourself, your mobility dealer will be able to
22
23
help you.
• Now check the adjustment of the brake. This must be set so that
the gap between the surface of the wheel and the braking bolt is
15 mm with the brake off (see fig. 23). The braking bolt must be
aligned horizontally, that is parallel to the ground surface.
• To adjust the gap. loosen the two Allen screws at the brake
mounting (see fig. 24).
• You can then push the braking system along the mounting into the
correct position.
• Then tighten both Allen screws up again.
• Make sure the brake fully locks into place when the lever is
operated and does not snap back.
The compact brakes only operate on one driving wheel each!
With pneumatic tyres, always ensure that both driving wheels have the
same tyre pressure to achieve good directional stability!
After completion of the setting process, retighten the loosened bolts
and test the brakes!
Adjustment of the brakes should be carried out
by specialist trained staff. However, if you have
enough experience, you can also carry out this
work yourself. Nevertheless, please bear in mind
that incorrectly adjusted brakes may have life
threatening consequences.
4.7. Wheels and tyres
The spoked wheels are attached to the frame by means of a floating
axle (Ø12mm), (see fig. 23). The Pyro Start Plus model comes with
floating axles as standard. (For floating axles see section 4.8). Check
that the wheels are securely fixed each time they are fitted!

To ensure the optimum operating safety of the wheelchair, there must
be a tyre pressure of 200-250 kPa (2-2.5 bar) for swivel-wheels with
pneumatic tyres.
Push rim
The push rim attached to the driving wheels can be fitted a little further
outwards, so that you can grip it better. Changing the push rim position
increases the risk of your fingers getting trapped or crushed.
4.8. Floating axles
To make the transport of your wheelchair considerably
easier, the wheels are equipped with floating axles as
standard:
• Press the locking button of the floating axle with your finger and
pull the wheel off (see fig. 26).
• When refitting the wheel, simply push the wheel back onto the
mount. At the same time, press in the locking button as well.
When attaching, make sure that the floating axle is inserted right up
to the stop! After attaching, check that the wheel is securely fixed by
pulling it towards you, without operating the locking button of the
floating axle!
4.9. Tip assist
The tip assist can be used to make it easier for an accompanying person
to negotiate obstacles such as kerbs. Hold the wheelchair firmly by the
push handles with both hands. You then press one of the tip assists
with one foot (see fig. 27), while at the same time pushing downwards
with your hands.
26
First loosen the four screws (see fig. 25) used to attach the push rim
to the driving wheels. Then fasten the push rim in a position that is
further out and tighten the screws again.

Always use the anti-tip wheels in pairs.
28
To fit the tip protection, please proceed as follows:
• Pull the rubber profiles off the tip assist.
• Push the round profile for the tip protection onto the side frame
tube at the bottom.
• Fix the tip protection with the M6x35 bolt and M6 self-locking nut
in the hole in the frame provided (Fig. 28).
The tip protection can also be used to assist tipping when the anti-tip
29
wheels are raised.
5.2. Safety belt
If required, a safety belt is available as an accessory. This is fitted onto
the side frame of the wheelchair with the side part either temporarily
removed or swung away (see fig. 29). Take the open end of the belt
once around the side frame tube and then fix it with the belt buckle.
5.3. Drum brake
As an option, the Pyro Start Plus can be equipped with a drum brake,
which should only be operated by an accompanying person via the
brake lever on the push handles.
The drum brake should be used as both a locking brake and also as a
service brake. When used as a service brake, it provides well-regulated
deceleration. The locking brake function is used for parking.
• To lock the brake, simply pull the brake lever and push the locking
lever upwards (see fig. 30).
• To release the locking brake again, simply pull the brake lever
briefly. (The locking mechanism releases automatically.)
To achieve optimum braking efficiency, the braking power is set by
using the adjusting screw (see fig. 31). The braking power is increased
by unscrewing the adjusting screw and reduced by tightening it.
• Please unscrew the adjusting screw until you notice friction noises
on the wheel when it is turning.
• Then tighten the adjusting screw until the friction noises disappear.
The wheel then runs freely.
• After completing the setting, the adjusting screw is fixed by
tightening the locknut.
30
You also use the belt buckle to adjust the length of the belt. Adjust the
belt length so that the belt is tight, but does not apply pressure.

Moving and braking are achieved via the push rims on the drive wheels.
Practice moving the wheelchair carefully at first until you are familiar
with it and the way it behaves.
Wheelchairs have only a limited ability to resist tipping and sliding.
Particular care is necessary when braking and moving onto or turning
on inclines. Leaning a long way out of the wheelchair increases the
danger of tipping. For increased safety, all wheelchairs can be fitted
with a safety belt (not standard).
You can hang shopping bags or a backpack on the backrest frame.
Please note, the risk of tipping over backwards
is significantly increased by hanging bags and
backpack on the backrest.
To get over obstacles more easily, the assisting person must position
the wheelchair at the correct angle to the obstacle by pressing on the
tip assist.
Before getting in or out, the parking brake must be locked. Use outside
of the home should only be undertaken with sufficient experience.
When possible, somebody should accompany you.
The static stability of the basic model is 7° (ca. 8 %). The critical
obstacle height at the basic model in unfavourable situations is 23
mm (maximum centre of gravity shift)
The critical obstacle height is the height in which the centre of gravity
(with the user) is right vertical over the obstacle rim. If the user tries to
put the wheelchair with the help of the driving wheels on the obstacle
without having shifted the centre of gravity forwardly, the wheelchair
will tip over backwardly.
According to the Road Traffic Act 66/1 of 1st
January 1981, hand driven wheelchairs which take
part in public road traffic (even on pavements) must
have lighting.
Pyro Start Plus is equipped with reflectors (passive lighting)
• 2 red reflectors at the back
• 2 yellow reflectors at both sides
If you use the wheelchair after nightfall you need additional lights
(active)
• a white light at the front
• a red light at the back
The functioning of these lights must be assured through a driving
independent electrical circuit (batteries).

8. Transport
You can determine whether or not your wheelchair is approved for use
as a seat in a vehicle for transporting disabled people by referring to
the symbols on the CE sticker on the product:
• Wheelchair suitable for use as a seat in a vehicle for
transporting disabled people (see fig. A)
• Wheelchair not suitable for use as a seat in a vehicle for
transporting disabled people (see fig. B)
The wheelchair has also been marked with symbols on the frame which
quickly show you and your transport service if it is suitable for transport
in wheelchair accessible vehicles and where the fastening points are
located:
• Wheelchair not suitable for use as a seat in a vehicle for
transporting disabled people (see fig. C)
• Fixation points on the restraint system (see fig. D)
All products approved by B+B for use as seats in vehicles are tested
in accordance to ISO 7176-19. The tests in accordance to ISO 717619 were performed using restraint systems from AMF-Bruns. The
correct mounting of the restraint system is a prerequisite for the safe
transportation of the products in a vehicle for transporting disabled
people and the basis for the approval. The restraint systems from AMFBruns provide the ideal points for the provision of restraint force for
the purpose of securing the products in the vehicle for transporting
disabled people (known by the German term „Kraftknoten“, which is
defined in the standard DIN 75078-2). For the purpose of providing
restraint in the vehicle for transporting disabled people (see fig. D), the
products must only be secured at these specific points („Kraftknoten“
points).

If possible, use a permanently installed car seat and its belt system.
Stow the wheelchair in the luggage space. The person responsible for
the transportation should be familiar with the current regulations for
transportation as well as with the method of operating the vehicle
for transporting disabled people and the restraint system. Anchored
4-point restraint systems must be used to secure the wheelchair in the
vehicle.
If you have any queries about securing your product in a vehicle for
transporting disabled people, please contact the B+B customer service
on +49 (0)700/60007070.
9. Maintenance Tips for Users
9.1. Cleaning and Disinfection
• The frame and the paneling of the wheelchair can be cleaned with
a moist cloth. You can use a mild detergent for more stubborn dirt
• The wheels can be cleaned with a wet synthetic fiber brush (do not
use a wire brush!)
• Push handles, arm pads, and seat and back pads can be washed
off. Use mild detergent.
• Use a disinfectant listed by VAH for disinfection.
Observe our included overview of the most important care, hygiene and
maintenance work.
9.2. Check before use
The wheelchair should be easy to drive without grinding noises and
with good direction stability when the brakes are released.
If you notice unusual behaviour when braking, inform your mobility
dealer immediately and do not use the wheelchair.
9.2.2. Inspection of Tires
Before embarking on any journey, check that the tyres are in good
condition.
10. Maintenance Tips for Retailers
We recommend to have the entire wheelchair inspected by a qualified
mobility dealer at least once a year.
Should the wheelchair be faulty or defective, it should be brought to a
qualified mobility dealer for repair without delay.
Repair and replacement of parts are carried out by the mobility dealer.
All information, documents and schematics necessary for repair are
made available to a qualified mobility dealer on request. There is also a
training program for authorized dealers.
Should you have any questions, please contact the B+B customer service
at +49 700 - 6000 7070.
9.2.1. Brake check
Make sure your brakes are operating properly before each use.
It should not be possible to push the wheelchair away while the
brakes are activated.
The wheelchair shall be inspected in accordance to
the service schedule and must be in good condition

11. Use by others
The Pyro Start Plus is appropriate for use by others. For use by others,
the wheelchair must first be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected
according to the accompanying care and hygiene instructions.
The product shall get checked by an authorised mobility dealer for
general condition, wear and shall get repaired if necessary.
12. Storage/dispatch
If the wheelchair is going to be stored or transported, all removable
and not tightened parts, except of the drive wheels, have to be removed
and packed in separate cartons. The separately packed parts can be
packed together in a larger carton.
It is recommendable to keep the original packaging for this purpose, so
that it is available in case you need it. In that way your wheelchair is
protected against environmental influences during storage or transport.
13. Disposal
If your wheelchair is no longer needed and you want to dispose it,
please contact your qualified mobility dealer.
14. Warranty
Guarantee items refer to all defects of the wheelchair which can
demonstrably be referred to material defect or manufacturing defect.
If there are complaints you have to provide a completed certificate of
guarantee.
Non-observance of the operating instructions as well
as improper use, maintenance jobs and technical
changes or adaptions without the permission of the
Bischoff & Bischoff company, lead to guarantee loss
and the loss of product liability in general.
We provide the statuatory warranty of 2 years for our products. For
batteries, replacement devices and repairs, a warranty period of 1
year applies.
Please also observe the B+B care, warranty, hygiene and maintenance
instructions. Your qualified mobility dealer will be happy to provide
these to you.
If you want to dispose your wheelchair yourself, please
ask your local disposal company for the applicable
disposal regulations in your town or city.
