Dear User
You have chosen a high-quality wheelchair from Bischoff & Bischoff. Thank you for your trust in our product
The wheelchair was designed to offer you a lot of benefits and to meet your needs. The Protego wheelchair allows you to adjust the chair‘s settings to your individual body size and shape thanks to the variety of adjustment options and optimum adjustability of the seat depth, backrest height, knee angle, seat width, backrest angle, seat angle and the length of lower leg. Protego is intended both for indoor and outdoor use. The wheelchair is offered in two models, Protego and Protego SL. The Protego SL permits improved adaptability for persons of large body height due to its greater seat height, seat depth, and backrest heigh.
These operating instructions intend to help you to familiarise yourself better with the operating and the handling of your wheelchair. Before using your new wheelchair for the first time, please read and follow the instructions in this manual carefully. The instruction manual is an integral and necessary part of the wheelchair. This is why you should keep it close by and include it when passing on the wheelchair to someone else.

2. Important safety instructions
2.1. General safety instructions
Please make sure that all parts have been properly installed before using the wheelchair. To avoid falls and dangerous situations, you should first practice driving your new wheelchair on level, unobstructed ground. We recommend having an assistant with you.
• The accompanying person should be physically and mentally
capable of operating a wheelchair
• Never use the wheelchair under the influence of alcohol or other
drugs.
• Please make sure that all parts have been properly installed before
using the wheelchair
• Never lift up the wheelchair at parts which are not fixed firmly (the
armrests or legrest).
• Make sure that the floating axle of the rear wheels are tightly in the
axle holder, otherwise there is risk of injuries.
• Please note, displacing the center of gravity by shifting the body
or by adding loads may increase the risk of tipping to the side or backwards.
• The wheelchair may not be used for transport of more than one
person or any additional load. Make sure to only use it for the

intended purpose.
• When adjusting the wheelchair and selecting the desired positions
of the chair, please be aware of the risk that body parts can get trapped in between parts of the wheelchair. Make sure that clothing and body parts do not get caught in between the moving parts.
• Please seek the help of an assistant person when going over
obstacles, steps, etc. Use the tip assist (see overview of wheelchair) to tip the wheelchair appropriately.
• Steps and larger obstacles may only be crossed with the help of at
least two assisting persons. For this, use lifting points 1 and 2 (see overview of the wheelchair). If equipment such as ramps, lifts or step climbing aids are available, these should be used.
• When driving on an incline or slope, it is necessary to be aware that
a risk of tipping exists even at low angles, depending on the axle position setting. The use of anti-tippers is highly recommended.
• Avoid running against obstacles (steps, kerbs) without braking or
moving down steps.
• Avoid using on uneven, loose surfaces.
• When getting into or out of the wheelchair, apply both parking
brakes
• All road traffic regulations must be observed when driving on
public roads.
• The passive lighting (reflectors) of your wheelchair must always be
visible to other road users.
• You must not use the handbrake to stop the wheelchair.
• When braking at fast speeds or on long downward slopes when
using the push rims, fingers and hand surfaces become hot. Caution! Danger of burning!
• We recommend leather gloves for outdoor use. These increase grip
and protect fingers and hands from dirt and injury at the same time.
• Please note, the upholstery will heat up if directly exposed to
sunlight and may cause injuries to your skin when touched. Therefore you should cover these parts or protect the wheelchair from exposure to direct sunlight.
• Please note, the frame and pad parts may cool down significantly
in winter. If possible, do not park the wheelchair outdoors in cold weather..
• The dimensions of the wheelchair exceed the recommended values
of DIN EN 12183:2014/A.1 and PRM TSI Annex M in terms of size and manoeuvring range.
• When transferring between wheelchair and bed, always make sure:
• both parking brakes are applied
• the side part on the side for getting in/out is swung backwards.
• the foot plates (for getting in/out) are folded upwards, swing
inwards/outwards or are removed.
2.2. Anti-tipping protectors
The anti-tipping protectors prevent the wheelchair from tipping over backwards. Please note that using the wheelchair with the anti-tipping protectors on areas with stairs, lifting platforms and ramps is only possible to a limited extent. Make sure that there is adequate distance at the top, bottom and sides.‚
2.3. Use on public roads
The wheelchair is designed for indoor and outdoor use. Please keep in mind that you are using public roads and therefore please observe all road traffic regulations.
Do not endanger other road users through inconsiderate driving, especially on walkways.

2.4. Purpose
• This wheelchair features push rims, an adjustable backrest ranging
from 0° to 44° and legrests that can be inclined until they are in a horizontal position, and it is intended to be used as a means for transporting invalid individuals and for making it easier to provide wheelchair users with nursing care.
• As a means for transporting invalid individuals, the wheelchair
serves to increase the mobility and transport of people with impaired mobility, and it enables them to be transported in a nearly horizontal position.
• As a disability aid, the wheelchair facilitates the transport of people
with impaired mobility; it makes it easier for caregivers to provide assistance; it assists caregivers with their activities while reducing the physical burden of providing care.
• The push rims also enable the person in need of care to propel the
wheelchair by themselves, like when they want to change their position in a room.
• The maximum load is 130kg for Protego and 150 kg for Protego SL.
2.5. Indications
Indications for use as a means for transporting invalid indi­viduals:
Inability to walk or severe walking disability as a result of:
• paralysis
• loss of limbs
• meromelia/limb deformation
• joint contractures/joint damage
• other ailments
But it can also be used by people who can propel and steer the wheelchair by themselves using the push rims. Moreover, it is suitable when a nearly horizontal position is intermittently required, like in situations where the patient shows signs of orthostatic hypotension.
Indications for use as a disability aid:
Using this wheelchair with push rims, a seat tilt and manual seat adjustment is indicated when it is not possible to have the person in need of care sit upright for a long time in a conventional wheelchair due to his or her physical condition and the person in need of care needs to spend a long period of time in a wheelchair.
2.6. Contraindications
Use of the wheelchair is not suitable for:
• perception disorders
• severe disturbances of equilibrium
• loss of limbs on both arms
• contractures/damage to joints on both arms
• inability to sit
• reduced or insufficient eyesight
It is not suitable to use the wheelchair as a disability aid when a patient has:
• inability to sit
2.7. Declaration of conformity
As the manufacturer of the product B+B declares Protego and Protego SL wheelchairs meet the requirements of Directive 93/42/EEC in full.
2.8. Responsibility
We are only able to provide a warranty if the product is used in accordance to the specified conditions and for the intended purposes. If modifications, repairs or maintenance works are made, please make sure only authorised persons perform these works in accordance to the instructions of B+B.

2.9. Service life
If used as intended, and the safety, care and maintenance instructions are observed, the expected service life is up to 5 years. Beyond this time the wheelchair can be used continuously, provided it is in a safe condition
3. Description of product and
contents
3.1. Inspection on delivery
The Protego wheelchair is delivered fully assembled in cardboard box. After unpacking, please retain the carton if possible. It can be used to store or return the wheelchair at a later stage.
Delivery of the wheelchair, instructions on its use and adjustments to the chair are carried out by qualified and authorised medical supply stores
If shipped by rail or a forwarding agent, the goods are to be checked with regard to transportation damage (carton) immediately in the presence of the delivery company. 4. Assembly and adjustments
You can carry out the adjustments of your wheelchair yourself with a little manual dexterity. You need a set of 5 mm to 8 mm Allen keys and ring spanners, SW10 and SW13. If you have any queries, please contact your mobility dealer.
4.1. Set up
After unpacking the box, you must first put the wheelchair in working order and get it ready for use.
• Put the back rest in the upright position
• Attach the backrest to the gas pressure cylinder for adjusting the
backrest by bolting it into place with the bolts. (Fig. 3) Since both parts are loose, you will have to use sufficient force when attaching them together..
• Now, close the locking device (Fig. 4)
• Attach the drive (rear) wheels with the quick-release axle.
• Activate the parking brakes on the right and left drive wheels.
• Put the seat cushion and padding for the backrest in place.
• Mount the legrests and fold the foot plates upwards
• Now, you can sit down in the wheelchair.
Only for the SL model:
• Attach the push handles and secure them
4.2. Foot plates
• The length of the support for the lower leg is fully adjustable.
• Unfasten the quick-release fastener.
• Select the desired height. (Fig. 5)
• Re-tighten the quick-release fastener.
• The foot plates must be folded upwards and swung to the side
when getting into or out of the wheelchair.
• The footplate can be adjusted along the notches in the bracket by
loosening the Allen (hexagon) screw (SW 5) . (Fig. 6)
4.3. Leg rests
• You can fold the foot plates upwards, or swing the legrests
outwards and take them out by pulling upwards so that you can get in and out of the wheelchair as easily as possible.
• To swing the legrests outwards, open the locking mechanism
(Fig. 7).
• When the legrests are in the swung-out position, they can be
completely removed. (Fig. 8).
• To assemble the legrests proceed in the reverse order.
• Now swing the legrests again forwards until you clearly hear it click
into place.
• The legrests are independent from each other and can be adjusted
until they are in a horizontal position.

When unfolding it, keep your fingers on the seat cover; otherwise there is a risk of pinching!
Please be careful with your fingers when making adjustments. Risk of entrapment!

• Loosen the handwheel. Pull the legrests until they are in the desired
position (Fig. 9).
• Re-tighten the handwheel.
• This is how you can put the legrests in any desired position.
• The calf pad can also be moved lengthwise and crosswise along the
legrests.
• Loosen the fixing screws (SW4) and place the calf pad in the
desired position (Fig. 10).
• Tighten the fixing screws again.
Before moving off, check for firm attachment of the legrests!
4.4. Side panels and armrest
• The height of the side panels, including the padded armrest, can be
adjusted.
• To do this, loosen the handwheel (Fig. 11) and take the side panel
completely out of the guide rail.
• Now, you can take unscrew the screw and then rescrew it in the
desired hole (Fig. 12).
• Once you are finished, you can put the side panel back in the guide
rail and secure it into place.
• Please make sure that you adjust the skirt protector after you have
adjusted the height of the side panel.
• The padded armrest can also be adjusted horizontally.
• Loosen the plastic screw underneath the padding of the armrest.
• Move the armrest to the desired position and tighten the screw
again
Do not use the side parts to lift the wheelchair!
4.5. Seat
Seat width
• The width of the seat can be extended for all models by 2.5 cm
each in order to meet the needs of the user.
• The same adjustments must be made on the right and left side.
• First, remove the wheels, side parts and the hand screw for the side
panel.
• Loosen the four screws on the side panel bracket and move the
distance piece from the inside (left arrow in Fig. 13) to the outside (right arrow in Fig. 13).
• Re-tighten the screws.
• Afterwards, you will need to adjust the distance between the
wheels.
• Loosen the fastening nut and move the distance piece from the
inside (left arrow in Fig. 14) to the outside (right arrow in Fig. 14).
• Re-tighten the fastening nut.
• Put the wheels and the side panel on again.

Seat depth
• The depth of the seat can be adjusted by 60 mm.
• Take the abduction wedge (knee separator) off by unscrewing
the three plastic screws underneath the seat and then pull it out towards the front (Fig.15).
• Take the seat padding off.
• Loosen the 4 Allen hexagon screws (SW4) on the edge of the seat
(Fig. 16).
• Now, move the seat to the desired position and re-tighten the
screws again.
• Place the seat padding back on the seat.
4.5.1. Adjustments for the SL model
The Protego SL wheelchair offers you additional adjustment options for the seat depth and seat height. These adjustments require the gas pressure spring to be moved, which is why they should only be carried out by specialists
• The gas pressure spring contains pressurized gas and it can explode
when exposed to heat.
• Keep out of the reach of children.
• Prior to use, read the identification label on the gas pressure spring.
• Store in a well-ventilated area and protect from sunlight.
• Damaged gas pressure springs can release low levels of nitrogen,
which displace oxygen in the air and can lead to suffocation
When working on the underside of the wheelchair, we recommend that you remove all of the attachment parts and lie the wheelchair on its side. Due to the product‘s weight, the work must be carried out by two
trained technicians.
Seat depth (only for the SL model)
There are three settings for adjusting the seat depth of the Protego SL model.
Loosen the screws for the gas pressure spring located underneath the seat (Fig. 17) and on the frame of the the seat (Fig. 18). Move the backrest forwards or backwards to the desired position and screw the backrest to the seat frame again.
Place the gas pressure spring in the corresponding hole underneath the seat and tighten the screw.
Then check that the screw fitting is tight and that the back angle ad­justment functions properly

Seat height (only for the SL model)
Seat height (only for the SL model)
There are three settings for adjusting the seat height of the Protego SL model.
Loosen the screw of the gas pressure spring (Fig. 19). Then loosen the screw on the frame (Fig. 20) and adjust the chair to the desired height. Make sure that the washers are secured in the same sequence. Make sure that the screws are tightly fixed.
Place the gas pressure spring in the corresponding hole underneath the seat and tighten the screw.
Then check that the screws are tightly fixed and the seat angle adjustment functions properly.
4.6. Backrest height
• The height of the backrest can be variably adjusted by moving it up
or down along the frame tubes.
• Take the backrest padding off.
• Loosen the screws that attach the backrest (Fig. 21).
• Adjust the backrest to the desired height and tighten the screws
again.
• Put the padding for the backrest back on the wheelchair.
Position the hook and loop tape and Velcro strap directly over each other
4.7. Seat angle
• The seat angle of the Protego wheelchair can be variably adjusted
from 0° bis 15° (Fig. 22)
• However, the angle between the backrest and the seat will remain
unchanged
• On the left push handle there is a release lever which has to be
used to adjust the seat angle (Fig.23)
• The gas pressure cylinder supports the adjustment of the seat
angle.
• When you let go of the release lever, the position of the seat angle
will remain in place.
• The seat tilt and the angle adjustment of the backrest can be
controlled by the attendant person while the user is sitting in the wheelchair.
4.8. Backrest angle
• The backrest angle of the Protego wheelchair can be variably
adjusted backwards from 0° bis 44° (Fig. 24)
• However, the angle of the seat to the ground will remain
unchanged.
• On the right push handle there is a release lever which has to be
used to adjust the backrest angle. (Fig. 25)
• The gas pressure cylinder supports the adjustment of the backrest
angle.
• When you let go of the release lever, the position of the seat angle
will remain in place
4.9. Locking/parking brake
The Protego wheelchair is equipped with a wheel lock, which can be controlled by the person sitting in the wheelchair. It must only be used to park the wheelchair. It is not suitable for slowing down the wheelchair while it is in motion! The push handles should be used for this purpose by applying light pressure on the push handles with the

palm of your hands. After the wheelchair is slowed down this way, you can then apply both wheel locks by pushing the brake levers forward. The wheelchair is now safely held in place.
• The distance between the pivot bolt and the tyre cover must be
X= 16 mm at the narrowest point when the braking mechanism is opened to its maximum position (Fig. 26).
• To adjust the distance, loosen the two fixing screws on the brake
mounting.
• You can then slide the braking system along the mounting into the
correct position.
• The braking bolt must be aligned horizontally so that it is parallel
to the ground surface.
• Then re-tighten both Allen hexagon screws again
• Make sure that the brake fully locks into place when the lever is
operated and that it does not snap back.
The compact brakes only operate on one driving wheel each!
With pneumatic tyres, always ensure that both driving wheels have the same tyre pressure to achieve good directional stability! After completion of the setting process, retighten the loosened bolts and test the brakes!
Adjustment of the brakes should be carried out by specialist trained staff. However, if you have enough experience, you can also carry out this work yourself. Nevertheless, please keep in mind that incorrectly adjusted brakes may have life threatening consequences.
4.10. Wheels and tyres
The spoked wheels are attached to the frame by means of a floating axle (Ø12mm), The Protego model comes with floating axles as standard. Check that the wheels are securely fixed each time they are fitted!
Driving wheels
PU tyres (puncture-proof, no valve) size 24“x1

“ are fitted as standard on your Protego. Pneumatic tyres are available as an option. If they become worn or defective, the authorised mobility dealer should be asked to carry out the repair.
To ensure the optimum operating safety of the brakes, there must be a tyre pressure of 300-400 kPa (3-4 bar) with pneumatic tyres.
Steering wheels
PU tyres (puncture-proof, no valve) size 7 are fitted as standard on your Protego. Pneumatic tyres are available as an option. If they become worn or defective, the authorised mobility dealer should be asked to carry out the repair.
To ensure the optimum operating safety of the wheelchair, there must be a tyre pressure of 200-250 kPa (2-2.5 bar) for swivel-wheels with pneumatic tyres.

Push rim
The push rim attached to the driving wheels can be fitted a little further outwards, so that you can grip it better. Changing the push rim position increases the risk of your fingers getting trapped or crushed.
First loosen the four screws (see fig. 25) used to attach the push rim to the driving wheels. Then fasten the push rim in a position that is further out and tighten the screws again.
4.11. Floating axies
To make the transport of your wheelchair considerably easier, the wheels are equipped with floating axles as standard:
• Press the locking button of the floating axle with your finger and
pull the wheel off
• When refitting the wheel, simply push the wheel back onto the
mount. At the same time, press in the locking button as wel.
When attaching, make sure that the floating axle is inserted right up to the stop! After attaching, check that the wheel is securely fixed by pulling it towards you, without operating the locking button of the floating axle!
4.12. Abduction wedge (optional)
• The optionally available abduction wedge (knee separator) can
be adjusted to the seat depth by changing its position in the rail located underneath the seat.
• Loosen the plastic screws, put the wedge in the desired position
and re-tighten the screws (Fig. 27).)
• To change the position of the abduction wedge in relation to the
patient, you must loosen the top plastic screw, slide the abduction wedge along the rail and then re-tighten the screw.
4.13. Trunk support pads (optional)
• The trunk support pads for the Protego wheelchair are optionally
available and their height, width and angles can be adjusted.
• Loosen both of the hexagon socket screws (SW 6) on the mounting
of the side part (Fig. 28).
• Position the trunk support pads at the desired height and width of
the chest.
• Re-tighten the hexagon socket screws..
• To lower the trunk support pads, you must loosen the plastic screw
on the guide rail, move the trunk support pads to the desired position and then re-tighten the plastic screw (Fig. 29).
• To fine-tune adjustments of the angle in relation to the chest,
loosen the hexagon socket screw (SW 1).
• Put the trunk support pad in the correct position and then re-
tighten the screw (Fig. 30).
4.14. Drum brake (optional)
As an option, the Protego can be equipped with a drum brake, which should only be operated by an attendant person via the brake lever on the push handles.
The drum brake should be used as both a locking brake and also as a service brake. When used as a service brake, it provides well-regulated deceleration. The locking brake function is used for parking.
• To lock the brake, simply pull the brake lever and push the locking
lever upwards (see fig. 31).
• To release the locking brake again, simply pull the brake lever
briefly. (The locking mechanism releases automatically.)

To achieve optimum braking efficiency, the braking power is set by using the adjusting screw (see fig. 32). The braking power is increased by unscrewing the adjusting screw and reduced by tightening it.
• Please unscrew the adjusting screw until you notice friction noises
on the wheel when it is turning.
• Then tighten the adjusting screw until the friction noises disappear.
The wheel then runs freely.
• After completing the setting, the adjusting screw is fixed by
tightening the locknut.
4.15. Tip protection
Always use the anti-tip wheels in pairs..
• The anti-tipping protectors, known as anti-tippers, prevent the
wheelchair from tipping over backwards.
• It is highly recommended that the anti-tippers be used when
the wheelchair is being operated by inexperienced users or by wheelchair users with an amputated leg.
• The anti-tippers are attached as a pair to the right-hand and left-
hand sides of the frame.
• The height of the anti-tippers can be adjusted.
• Press the positioning pin inwards and slide the anti-tipper into the
desired position (Fig. 33).
• Make sure that both anti-tippers are placed at the same height
The anti-tippers will only work when set to the first two holes. When the anti-tippers are fully retracted, the wheelchair should only be used when the person in the wheelchair has someone assisting them
4.16. Tipping lever
• The tipping lever makes it easier for an assistant to tilt the
wheelchair slightly backwards in order to go over a step for example.
• To do this, push the lever down using your foot (Fig. 34)
• Use the push handles to keep your balance.
• Use the frame on the anti-tippers as a tipping lever.
4.17. Head rest
• The Protego wheelchair is equipped with a headrest; its angle,
height and depth can be adjusted.
• Pull the locking mechanism on the backrest out (Fig. 35).
• Position the headrest at the desired height and then let go of the
locking mechanism..
• The slide bar will snap into place in the next possible position.
• The depth of the headrest can be adjusted with the help of a quick
release fastener in the neck area of the headrest (Fig. 36)
• Place the headrest at the required depth.
• Re-tighten the screws..
• Loosen the screw.
• Put the headrest at the desired angle (Fig. 37).
• Then re-tighten the screws.

4.18. Push handles
The push handles can be adjusted to a higher or lower position so that an assistant can push the wheelchair more comfortably
Hold the push handle firmly with one hand. With the other hand, activate the locking device (Fig. 38). Move the push handle to the desired height and then let go of the locking device. Now move the push handle up or down slightly to ensure that it snaps audibly into place.
Repeat this procedure on the other side. Always make sure that the push handles are set at the same height. There is a scale on the outside of the rail that you can use when adjusting the height
SL model
To make the upwards or downwards adjustment easier, you can take off the horizontal push bar. To do this, loosen the hand screws on the push handles:
Loosen the lever screws (Fig. 39) on the push handles and place them at the desired height. Then re-tighten the lever screws to lock the push handles in place.
Repeat this procedure on the other side. Always make sure that the push handles are set at the same height. There is a scale located on the outside of the rail that you can use when adjusting the height.
Put the horizontal push bar back on and make sure that it is secured tightly.
4.19. Therapy table (optional)
• The Protego wheelchair can be equipped with a therapy tray
(Fig. 40).
• Loosen the plastic screw located on the bushing of the slide bar for
the therapy tray (Fig. 41).
• Loosen the screws connected to both guide rails which are on the
underside of the tray.
• Adjust the distance of the guard rails to the width of the free
sockets in the armrests.
• Move the guide rails of the therapy tray into the bushings of the
slide bars on the armrests. Make sure that you place the therapy tray over the padding of the armrest..
• Secure the therapy tray by tightly screwing on the knob screws
(Fig. 41).
• The height of the tray can be adjusted. To do this, please review the
instructions on adjusting the height of the side panels.
• The tray can also be adjusted horizontally. To do this, loosen the
knob screws, put the tray in the desired position for the patient and then re-tighten the knob screws.
4.20. Lap belt (optional)
There is also an optional lap belt available; it secures wheelchair users who do not have the stability required for sitting in a wheelchair (Fig. 42)
• The Protego wheelchair can be equipped with a seat belt for the
pelvis.
• Use the buckle to open and close the belt.
• The length of the belt can be adjusted using the movable latch on
the belt.

5. Use
5.1. Entering and leaving from the side
• Move the wheelchair as close as possible to the present or future
seat so they are side by side.
• If you wish to move from another wheelchair or room chair, lock it
by setting the parking brakes.
• Secure the Protego against rolling away accidentally by activating
the parking brake.
• Pivot the armrest backwards and away, or remove the side part with
the armrest.
• Fold the foot plates/footrest to the side or remove the leg rests.
• Now slide sideways onto the other seat.
• Make sure that you are sitting as far back in the seat as possible.
• Finally, return the leg rest to their original position and reinsert the
side parts if necessary.
5.2. Entering and leaving from the front
• First fold the foot plates up or remove the leg rests.
• Move the Protego and the current or intended seat together front
to front if possible and decelerate the Protego
• If you wish to move from another wheelchair or room chair, lock it
by setting the parking brakes.
• Now slide onto the seat by turning your body around.
• Then move the arm rest and leg rests to the original position.
Never stand on the footrest! Risk of tipping
5.3. Negotiating stairs and high
steps
For obstacles and stairs with more than three steps, two accompanying people shall help you..
• The helpers shall take hold only at securely mounted parts of
the frame. The lifting points are depicted in Figures 43 and 44, depending on how the model is equipped..
• When going up any stairs, the helper behind the wheelchair pulls
the wheelchair over the step, holding it at the securely mounted handles.
• The helper who is below takes hold of the front frame tubes and
stabilises the position. At the same time, he pushes the rear wheels of the wheelchair against the steps
Never stand on the footrest! Risk of tipping
Please be careful of your fingers during use. Risk of entrapment!

• When going down any stairs, the helper who is below brakes by
pushing the wheelchair right against the steps. The helper above holds the wheelchair at the push handles, secures it and holds it in the right position. The wheelchair should roll down step by step..
Frame and push handles are the only places where you can get hold of the wheelchair to transport it. Never lift up the wheelchair at the armrests!
5.4. Driving the wheelchair
Sit in your B+B wheelchair. Make sure you are sitting as far back as possible.
Moving and braking are achieved via the push rims on the drive wheels. A helper can push, steer and brake the wheelchair using the handles. He or she must be able to also control the wheelchair in emergency situations. Practice moving the wheelchair carefully at first until you are familiar with it and the way it behaves.
Wheelchairs have only a limited ability to resist tipping and sliding. Particular care is necessary when braking and moving onto or turning on inclines. Leaning a long way out of the wheelchair increases the danger of tipping. For increased safety, all wheelchairs can be fitted with a safety belt (not standard).
You can hang shopping bags or a backpack on the backrest frame.
To get over obstacles more easily, the assisting person must position the wheelchair at the correct angle to the obstacle by pressing on the tip assist.
Before getting in or out, the parking brake must be locked. Use outside of the home should only be undertaken with sufficient experience. When possible, somebody should accompany you.
The static stability of the basic model is 7° (ca. 8 %). The critical obstacle height at the basic model in unfavourable situations is 23 mm (maximum centre of gravity shift)
The critical obstacle height is the height in which the centre of gravity (with the user) is right vertical over the obstacle rim. If the user tries to put the wheelchair with the help of the driving wheels on the obstacle without having shifted the centre of gravity forwardly, the wheelchair will tip over backwardly.
Please note, the risk of tipping over backwards is significantly increased by hanging bags and backpack on the backrest

7. Transport
You can determine whether or not your wheelchair is approved for use as a seat in a vehicle for transporting disabled people by referring to the symbols on the CE sticker on the product:

The wheelchair has also been marked with symbols on the frame which quickly show you and your transport service if it is suitable for transport in wheelchair accessible vehicles and where the fastening points are located:

All products approved by B+B for use as seats in vehicles are tested in accordance to ISO 7176-19. The tests in accordance to ISO 7176­19 were performed using restraint systems from AMF-Bruns. The correct mounting of the restraint system is a prerequisite for the safe transportation of the products in a vehicle for transporting disabled people and the basis for the approval. The restraint systems from AMF­Bruns provide the ideal points for the provision of restraint force for the purpose of securing the products in the vehicle for transporting disabled people (known by the German term „Kraftknoten“, which is defined in the standard DIN 75078-2). For the purpose of providing restraint in the vehicle for transporting disabled people (see fig. D), the products must only be secured at these specific points („Kraftknoten“ points).werden. If possible, use a permanently installed car seat and its belt system. Stow the wheelchair in the luggage space. The person responsible for the transportation should be familiar with the current regulations for transportation as well as with the method of operating the vehicle

for transporting disabled people and the restraint system. Anchored 4-point restraint systems must be used to secure the wheelchair in the vehicle.

8. Maintenance Tips for Users
8.1. Cleaning and Disinfection
• The frame and the paneling of the wheelchair can be cleaned with
a moist cloth. You can use a mild detergent for more stubborn dirt
• The wheels can be cleaned with a wet synthetic fiber brush (do not
use a wire brush!)
• Push handles, arm pads, and seat and back pads can be washed
off. Use mild detergent.
• Use a disinfectant listed by VAH for disinfection.
Caution! Do not use a high-pressure or steam cleaning device.
8.2. Inspection of the wheelchair by
the user
Check these items before beginning each journey
• Make sure that the tyres are in good condition. Carry out a regular
check of the tread depth of the tyres once a month. This should be at least 1 mm. Any faulty or worn out tyres must be changed.
• Ensure that the parking brakes function properly. When the brake
is applied, the wheelchair should not be able to be moved. When the brake is released, the wheelchair should be able to be moved around easily without making any friction noises and it should have good directional stability. If you notice unusual braking
performance, inform your specialist dealer immediately and do not use the wheelchair.
• Make sure the seat cover and back cover are in good condition and
clean. If the covers get dirty, you can clean them according to the cleaning instructions. If they are damaged, contact your specialist dealer.
• Check the folding mechanism and all of the movable parts and
ensure that they can be moved easily and work without making a lot of noise. Squeaking noises indicate that there is damage and your wheelchair should be checked by a specialist dealer.
• Make sure that all screwed fittings and riveted joints are intact and
in good condition.
9. Maintenance Tips for Retailers
We recommend to have the entire wheelchair inspected by a qualified mobility dealer at least once a year.
Should the wheelchair be faulty or defective, it should be brought to a qualified mobility dealer for repair without delay.
Repair and replacement of parts are carried out by the mobility dealer.
All information, documents and schematics necessary for repair are made available to a qualified mobility dealer on request. There is also a training program for authorized dealers.

10. Use by others
The Protego is appropriate for use by others. For use by others, the wheelchair must first be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected according to the accompanying care and hygiene instructions.
The product shall get checked by an authorised mobility dealer for general condition, wear and shall get repaired if necessary.
11. Storage / dispatch
f the wheelchair is going to be stored or transported, all removable and not tightened parts, except of the drive wheels, have to be removed and packed in separate cartons. The separately packed parts can be packed together in a larger carton.
It is recommendable to keep the original packaging for this purpose, so that it is available in case you need it. In that way your wheelchair is protected against environmental influences during storage or transport.
12. Disposal
If your wheelchair is no longer needed and you want to dispose it, please contact your qualified mobility dealer. If you
want to dispose your wheelchair yourself, please ask your local disposal company for the applicable disposal
regulations in your town or city.
13. Warranty
Guarantee items refer to all defects of the wheelchair which can demonstrably be referred to material defect or manufacturing defect. If there are complaints you have to provide a completed certificate of guarantee.
Non-observance of the operating instructions as well as improper use, maintenance jobs and technical changes or adaptions without the permission of the Bischoff & Bischoff company, lead to guarantee loss and the loss of product liability in general.
We provide the statuatory warranty of 2 years for our products. For batteries, replacement devices and repairs, a warranty period of 1 year applies..
Please also observe the B+B care, warranty, hygiene and maintenance instructions. Your qualified mobility dealer will be happy to provide these to you.
