VPM Software Quickstart Guide
Minimum requirements to run this software:
1. A PC running Windows 95 or later
2. 32K memory, and 4 megabytes free hard drive space
4. A Bird 5012 Wideband Power Sensor
To install the VPM software:
This CD is browser, html-based and will auto-start upon insertion into the CD-ROM drive. You do not have to be linked to the Internet for it to run, but you do need a browser installed. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator also are included on this CD. If the auto-start function is not enabled on your PC follow the instructions below:
1. Insert the CD onto the CD-ROM drive.
2. Click the MY Computer icon on the desktop.
3. Click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive.
4. Double-Click the Virtual DPM.exe file.
5. Follow the on screen prompts.
If you have problems while running the VPM software:
1. Refer to the 'readme.txt' file on the CD
2. Refer to the help file in the VPM program
To connect the sensor:
1. Insert the ac adapter's barrel connector into the power sensor's external dc connector (See picture on next page). Insert the adapter plug into a wall receptacle.
2. Check that the sensor's status LED is blinking.
3. Start the VPM program by double-clicking on the VPM icon.
4. In the Comm menu, select the com port you are using. This is usually COM1.
5. Use the serial cable provided to connect the sensor's RS-232 port to the PC's serial port. + NOTE: Support for USB connection for the WPS will be available in the near future. Do not attempt to
connect a PC to the sensor with the USB port.
WARNING
Never attempt to connect or disconnect RF equipment
from the transmission line while RF power is being applied.
Leaking RF energy is a potential health hazard.
6. Connect the sensor to the RF line so that the arrow points to the load.
To use the sensor:
1. Use the speed keys to set the measurement and measurement units. The Bird WPS can measure Average, Peak, and Burst power as well as Crest Factor and CCDF. Refer to the help file for more infor mation on the measurement modes. To select the measurement:
a. Press the Type up and down arrows to cycle through the possible measurements. b. Press Fwd Units or Rfl Units to cycle through the possible units. c. Press Offset to enter an offset (in dB) for the power measurements. d. Press Filter to select the bandwidth of the video filter. e. Press CCDF Limit to enter the CCDF threshold power (in Watts).
2. Turn on the RF source.
3. Reading will be displayed.

BIRD ELECTRONIC SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT
1. GRANT OF LICENSE. Bird Electronics Corporation ("BIRD") grants to you the right to use one copy of the enclosed Virtual Power Meter (VPM) software program (the "SOFTWARE") on a sin­gle terminal connected to a single computer (i.e. with a single CPU). You may not network the SOFTWARE or otherwise use it on more than one computer or computer terminal at the same time.
2. COPYRIGHT. The SOFTWARE is owned by BIRD and is protected by United States copyright laws and international treaty provisions. You may make one copy of this SOFTWARE, for archival purposes, to protect your investment. Giving or otherwise transferring all of your rights to the SOFTWARE to someone else will not violate copyright law provided that you give all of the SOFT­WARE and documentation (including this License) to that person. Once you transfer your rights, you cannot continue to use the SOFTWARE or keep any copies of the SOFTWARE.
3. OTHER RESTRICTIONS. Except as described in this License, you may not transfer, rent, lend, copy, modify, translate, sub-license, timeshare, electronically transmit or receive, disassemble, decompile or reverse engineer the SOFTWARE.
4. DUAL MEDIA SOFTWARE. If the SOFTW ARE p ackage cont ains dual media (i.e. both CD and floppy disk versions of SOFTWARE), then you may use only the disks appropriate for your single­use computer. You may not use the other disks on another computer or loan, rent, lease, or trans­fer them to another user.
5. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY. BIRD'S LIABILITY (WHETHER UNDER THE THEORIES OF BREACH OF CONTRACT OR WARRANTY, NEGLIGENCE, OR STRICT LIABILITY) FOR THIS SOFTWARE SHALLBE LIMITED TO REPAIRING OR REPLACING THE PHYSICAL MEDIAFOR THE SOFTWARE FOUND BY BIRD TO BE DEFECTIVE OR AT BIRD'S OPTION, TO REFUND THE PURCHASE PRICE OF SUCH SOFTWARE.
6. DISCLAIMER OF CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT SHALL BIRD BE LIABLE FOR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THIS AGREEMENT, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, BREACH OF ANY OBLIGATION IMPOSED ON BIRD HEREUNDER OR IN CONNECTION HEREWITH. CONSEQUENTIALDAMAGES FOR
PURPOSES HEREOF SHALL INCLUDE WITHOUT LIMITATION LOSS OF USE, INCOME OR PROFIT, OR LOSSES SUSTAINED AS THE RESULT OF INJURY, (INCLUDING DEATH TO ANY PERSON) OR LOSS OF OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION PROPERTY HANDLED OR PROCESSED BY THE USE OF THE SOFTWARE). BUYER SHALL INDEMNIFY BIRD AGAINST ALL LIABILITY, COST EXPENSE, WHICH MAYBE SUSTAINED BY BIRD ON ACCOUNT OF ANY SUCH LOSS, DAMAGE OR INJURY.
7. BIRD warrants that the physical media for the SOFTWARE will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service for a period of one (1) year from the date of ship­ment. BIRD makes no representation or warranty regarding the content of the SOFTWARE and documentation. For example, BIRD does not warrant that the SOFTWARE or documentation are "error-free" or will meet the needs and requirements of a particular user. BIRD'S sole obligation under this warranty shall be to issue credit, repair or replace the physical media for the SOFTWARE which is proven to be other than as warranted.
8. NO OTHER WARRANTIES. BIRD DISCLAIMS ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MER­CHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE SOFTWARE, ANY ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS, AND ANY ACCOMPANYING HARDWARE.
9. This Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Ohio. Any dispute arising between you and BIRD based upon this Agreement will be resolved by arbitration in Cleveland, Ohio and in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association, and the award of the arbitrators shall be final and binding upon the parties.
