Section 6 - Prepare all Acrylic Parts
Peel the protective film from both sides of all acrylic parts before use. The simplest way is to use the file supplied in the Tool Kit. Place the file at about a 20 degree angle and
roll the edge of the film towards the centre of the part. Once the edge is lifted remove the film completely.
Note: Remove the protective film from both sides of all acrylic parts
Note: If you remove the film from all parts before assembly be sure to return the parts to relevant packs

Section 14 - Wiring
Thread the harness of wires from Extruder #2 through the hole in the feed screw support, through the
small conduit and then down the long conduit back to the original connector that plugs into the motherboard. It will help to tape the end of the cables together to provide some rigidity during the push down the second conduit, and or use the ‘filament pull through’ technique used for pulling the original wires from Extruder #1. This procedure is described in the original RapMan Build Manual.
Page 25
D o c u m e n t N o : D 1 0 0 2 5 0
Page: 25
RapMan V3.1.0 Double Extruder Installation
Note: Because the Double Extruder wires have a greater distance to travel to get to the connector, the wires may be too short to reach the connector. The long conduit may be too long for the Extruder #2 wires to poke out the conduit end.
Pull the wires to ensure the maximum length is achieved. If additional length is needed trim back the length of the conduit at the connector end to expose 40mm of
the Extruder #2 wires.
Before making any connections, clearly identify the group of Extruder #2 wires either with a zip tie or tape
to distinguish them from the wires already there. This will make wiring up to the connector easier (the colours of the Extruder #2 wires are identical to wires from Extruder #1).
If necessary, trim Extruder #1 wires to the same length as Extruder #2 wires for easier connecting. Connect the wires into the 25-pin connector (or solder if using a solder kit) as per the pin out table below. Note: No wires from Extruder #1 will be moved from their current position, although, wires of Extruder #2
will be added to Pin 7 and Pin 21 which already have wires inserted from Extruder #1.

Section 15 – Levelling the Extruder Heads
Ensure the bed has been levelled (as per the Operation manual for the RapMan.) Move the Heads to the centre of the build area. Move the Build Bed up so the tips of the Extruder Nozzle are close to the bed.
Examine the distances of the tips of the nozzles to the bed. It is important that both nozzles are equally
distanced from the bed to achieve good quality Double head prints.
Note: Due to construction, it is likely you will see a difference in nozzle heights from the bed. Correction
will be necessary.
If they are less than 0.5mm difference, skip this step. If it is close to a 0.5mm or more difference, remove
the lowest extruder from the carriage and insert a paper spacer (single sheet or more if necessary) cut to fit the shape where the head makes contact with the carriage. Reinstall this head. The difference between the heads should be less than a 0.5mm.
Page 29
D o c u m e n t N o : D 1 0 0 2 5 0
Page: 29
RapMan V3.1.0 Double Extruder Installation
Note: Inserting this spacer will raise the lowest head close to the height of the adjacent head making it
easier to complete the final height adjustment.
Finally, with the nozzles close to the bed, slide a sheet of fine emery paper under the nozzles, with the grit
side touching the nozzles.
Slowly move the bed up until the emery paper is against the lowest nozzle. Move the emery paper under the nozzles and slowly remove some material form the lowest nozzle.
Continue to move the bed up slightly until both nozzles are making contact with the emery paper.
Once completed, both nozzle tips should be equal in height from the bed. This will ensure the quality of
Double Head builds.

Section 16 – Firmware and Software Update
Note: BFB Firmware and Drivers are constantly under evaluation and redesign. Upgrades are released as bugs are repaired, as well as, the addition of new tools and features. Check the BFB and Distributors sites for the latest Downloads.
Download the latest RapMan Firmware at www.bitsfrombites.com, Downloads, Software. There are more
than one Firmware files available; be sure you pick the one for “RapMan Firmware-Current.”
Install the firmware according to “BFB Firmware Loader Instrucitons.pdf.” These instructions are found in
the downloaded Firmware file folder.
Once the firmware is loaded, check for the latest BFB Axon Software at www.bitsfrombites.com,
Downloads, Software, BFB Axon. Download this to our computer.
Note: the latest software should include a new default profile for RapMan Double Head systems. This
profile is for using Double Heads with ABS in Extruder #1 and PLA in Extruder #2. The new profile will indicate RapMan Double Head with both ABS and PLA.
Note: To use Extruder #1 with either ABS or PLA use the regular Profiles for each.
