the re ceiver. For a given type of smoke, the light reach ing the photodetector is pro por tional to the smoke den sity.
2.2 FEATURES OF MEASURING CHAMBER
The FC400P uses ver ti cal chev rons to ex clude am bi ent light. Smoke in ci dent on
the de tec tor is chan nelled into the de tec tor by the outer cover fins (see Fig. 2) and
passes through the ver ti cal chev rons. The smoke is de flected into the op ti cal
cham ber and through the sam pling vol ume be fore pass ing out the other side of the
de tec tor.The emit ter (see Fig. 1) is a GaAlAs solid state type op er at ing in the near
in fra-red (880nm peak), while the de tec tor is a matched sil i con photodiode. These
de vices to gether with their as so ci ated lenses are held in place by the cham ber
mould ings. The de sign of the op ti cal sys tem is such that the pres ence of small in sects such as thrips should not cause false alarms.
2.3 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONS
2.3.1 OPTICAL
The emit ter is only pulsed ev ery time the de tec tor is polled from the con trol ler, this
is to re duce qui es cent cur rent. The op ti cal pulse sig nal as re ceived by the
photodetector (a sig nal pro por tional to the scat ter within the op ti cal cham ber) is fed
to the ‘Op ti cal ASIC’.The op ti cal ASIC am pli fies the an a logue sig nal which is fed to
an an a logue in put on the com mon cir cuit.
2.3.2 COMMON CIRCUIT
Re fer to Fig. 3
Com mu ni ca tions be tween the con trol ler and de tec tor uses the Fre quency Shift
Key ing (FSK) method. The ‘Dis crim i na tion Cir cuit’ fil ters the FSK sig nal from the
+ve line volt age and con verts it to a dig i tal square wave in put for the ‘Com mu ni ca tions ASIC’. The ‘Com mu ni ca tions ASIC’ de codes the sig nal and when its own ad dress is de coded, the an a logue in puts re ceived from the op ti cal and heat sens ing
el e ments are con verted to cor re spond ing dig i tal val ues. These dig i tal val ues are
then passed to the ‘Tx Driver Cir cuit/Cur rent Sink’ which ap plies them to the +ve
line for trans mis sion to the con trol ler. The Com mon Cir cuit is also used to:
Ø Con trol Sounder and Re lay bases via the ‘Func tional Base In ter face Cir cuit’
from con trol ler com mands.
Ø Con trol the op er a tion of the Re mote LED via the ‘Re mote LED Cir cuit’ from con -
trol ler com mands.
2.4 WIRING
Loop ca bling is con nected to base ter mi nals L (-ve) and L1 (+ve). A drive is pro vided for a re mote in di ca tor con nected be tween loop pos i tive and ter mi nal R.Ter mi nal L2 (an a logue out put) is for use with func tional sounder and re lay bases.
1 INTRODUCTION
The FC400P op ti cal smoke de tec tor forms part of the FC400 Se ries Ad dress able
Fire de tec tors.

Soft ware within the con trol ler is used to in ter pret the re turned op ti cal and heat val ues to raise alarm or other ap pro pri ate re sponse ac cord ing to the type of de tec tor
con fig ured in Fire Class 500 Console.
☞ Note: Nor mal and High sen si tiv ity set tings meet the re quire ments of EN54-7
(see para 1.1.1).
1.1 DETECTION LOGIC
The op ti cal smoke de tec tor can be se lected in one logic mode as fol lows:
1.1.1 MODO NORMALE
In the nor mal de tec tion mode, an alarm is gen er ated when an alarm thresh old is
reached.
1.2 SENSITIVITY SWITCHING
This can be done ei ther by user ac tion or be event or time driven (eg, day/night
switch ing).Chang ing the sen si tiv ity is done by shift ing the sen si tiv ity by one level
up or down.
2 OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The FC400P op er ates by sens ing the op ti cal scat ter from smoke par ti cles gen er ated in a fire. While the op ti cal scat ter de tec tor can give good de tec tion per for mance for the ma jor ity of fires, some fast burn ing fires pro duce lit tle vis i ble smoke
and some pro duce very black smoke, nei ther of which are eas ily de tected by the
op ti cal scat ter de tec tor. (Such fires are rep re sented in EN54-7 by Poly ure thane
and Heptane type fires re spec tively). These fires do how ever pro duce high heat
out puts with an as so ci ated rise in air tem per a ture. The de tec tor has been de signed to of fer im proved de tec tion of such fires by de tect ing the rapid rate-of-rise
of air tem per a ture and un der these con di tions in creas ing the smoke de tec tion sen si tiv ity. This gives an ear lier de tec tion of such fires and a broader de tec tion ca pa bil ity than a stan dard de tec tor.
2.1 OPTICAL SYSTEM
The FC400P de tects vis i ble par ti cles pro duced in fires by us ing the light scat ter ing
prop er ties of the par ti cles. The de tec tor uses the op ti cal ar range ment shown di a gram mat i cally in Fig.1. The op ti cal sys tem con sists of an in fra-red emit ter and re ceiver, with a lens in front of each, so ar ranged that their op ti cal axes cross in the
sam pling vol ume.The emit ter, with its lens, pro duces a nar row beam of light which
is pre vented from reach ing the re ceiver by the baf fles. When smoke is pres ent in
the sam pling vol ume a pro por tion of the light is scat tered, some of which reaches
