Subject:
The Bendix Trailer Spring Brake Control Valve models SR-2, SR-4, SR-5 and Australian valve models ABV3802,
SR-3 and SR-38 manufactured between March 2000 and April 2001 are a part of a voluntary recall campaign. Also
included are SR-4 maintenance kits as identified below. The recall DOES NOT affect the Bendix SR-3 Inversion
Valve.

What You Need To Do
All vehicle manufacturers, dealers and distributors should immediately stop using and/or selling any of the SR-2,
SR-4, or SR-5 (or in Australia, any ABV3802, SR-3, and SR-38) Trailer Spring Brake Valves or affected service
kits, manufactured between March 2000 and April 2001, containing the impacted component. Also, if you have
sold any of these valves please make your customers aware of the recall campaign.

The Problem
The molded rubber face of the Inlet/Exhaust Valve (“I/E” Valve”) of the affected SR brake valve assembly can
separate from the valve’s metal insert and block the exhaust passage of the trailer spring brake circuit. This
condition can result in affected trailers being unable to apply the parking/emergency spring brakes during parking
or in the event of a trailer supply line failure. The service braking of the trailer, as well as the service, parking and
emergency braking of the tractor, are not affected by this defect.
The Cause
The cause of the defect is due to manufacturing processes at a Bendix supplier of the impacted I/E Valves. The
manufactur ing processes have been changed to eliminate these factors and prevent recurrence of this fault.
Valve Date Code Interpretation
The date code is interpreted as follows. The first character is numeric representing the shift of manufacture (1 or 2).
(Note: The shift of manufacture is optional and may not be on all valves.) Second is an alpha character (A through
M skipping the letter I) representing January through December for the month of manufacture (i.e., “A” = January;
“B” = February and so on). The next 4 characters are numbers representing the day of the month followed by the
year (two digits for each). The last character is an alpha character representing the location of the manufacturing
plant. For example the date code 2K0300T indicates the product was manufactured on the second shift of October
3, 2000 in Texas. If the valve date code falls between March 1, 2000 (C0100T) and April 30, 2001 (D3001T) the
valve must be repaired with one of the available repair kits shown in this bulletin. Refer to figures 2 and 3.

Valve or Kits in Inventory
If your current parts inventory contains replacement SR-2/4/5 Valves or SR-4 service kits manufactured within the
impacted time frame, return the unused valves or kits to Bendix for a no cost exchange. Please call the Bendix
Recall Assistance Center at 1-800-478-1793 to arrange for the exchange.
Valve Repair
Bendix will send owners/operators of trailers with an affected valve already installed a corrective repair kit at no
charge. Bendix will offer up to $30 to cover labor necessary to install the kit. The labor reimbursement form and
postage paid return envelope are included in the kit. To request a kit or additional information contact the Bendix
Recall Assistance Center at 1-800-478-1793 in the United States, Mexico and Canada or Robbie Wilkinson at
Knorr-Bremse Australia at 011-612-4954-2970 in Australia and New Zealand. Repair of the spring brake control
valve requires removal of the valve from the vehicle and the installation of a modification kit. The kit piece
numbers are shown below.

Identification of Recalled Valves
Verify the spring brake control valve is an SR-2, SR-4 or SR-5. Refer to Figure 1 to find the date code on the side
of the valve, near the cover, and verify the valve falls within the date code parameters shown above. Valves in use
that have been previously repaired as a part of the recall campaign should have a green tie wrap secured to the
valve in a conspicuous location to indicate that the valve has been repaired.
Identification of Recalled Kits
Bendix has sold three different SR-4 maintenance kits that might contain the suspect Inlet/Exhaust Valve. The
maintenance kit part numbers are 102048, 108259 and 5002195. The date code appears on the kit box under the
piece number. Using the same date code identification and interpretation information described above, check the
kit date codes. If the kit date code falls between March 1, 2000 (C0100T) and April 30, 2001 (D3001T) the kit
must be replaced with a kit of the same piece number.
