BRAKE VALVE TREADLE REPLACEMENT – COACH
APPLICATIONS
During normal use, some brake valve treadles may develop small cracks along the top surface, causing the brake
valve treadle to bend. Over time this bend will result in a decreased treadle angle, which in turn will require an
increase in braking effort by the vehicle operator. A quick visual inspection can identify if this condition is
present.
A bump or worn spot present in the treadle cover, near the roller area, may indicate that the treadle is cracked and
bent, pushing the cover up in the cente r. Removal of the treadle cover or inspection of the bottom side of the
treadle will verify if this condition exists.
This condition is limited to coach applications with a treadle configuration as shown in Figure 1. This unique
treadle has a roller block welded to the middle of its underside. The cracking occurs near this weld.
If this condition exists, the treadle assembly must be replaced with Bendix Treadle Assembly piece number
5000293. As shown in figure 2, the new treadle does not contain a welded roller block in the center. Because of
this design change, the roller and pin can not be interchanged from the old treadle assembly to the new. To
facilitate installation, the treadle, treadle cover, pin, roller, cotter pin and fasteners are included with the new
treadle assembly.
