TROUBLESHOOTING BRAKE PROBLEMS - TREADLE/PEDAL
TIPS
Dissatisfaction with brake treadle performance such as “sticky” peda l o p er a tio n, noi se o r uneve n
pedal “feel” can often result when regular
maintenance items are overlooked.
Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC
recommends a 3-month, 25,000-mile or 900
operating hours maintenance schedule for the
components found in the treadle mechanism.
Inspect the treadle, or pedal arm in the case of
engine compartment bulkhead-mounted models
and the rest of the components shown in Figure
1. Early signs of wear, such as: boot
deterioration, plunger wear, or uneven wear
(“egg-shaping”) in t he plunger b ore, are warning
signs. Refer to the valve’s Service Data Sheet for
repair instructions if needed, replace components
as necessary. Coat the si des of the plunger and
its bore liberally with barium grease before
reassembling. Light oil may be used elsewhere
for lubrication.
Benefits include extended part life, and better
performance.
