Subject: R-8P Pressure Equalizing Relay Valve
The R-8P Pressure Equalizing Relay Valve is a special purpose device designed specifically to
replace standard booster relay valves on semi-trailer converter dollies. Unlike the standard
booster relay valve, which typically has a 2-4 psi differential between control and delivery, the
R-8P has a 0 psi differential.
In the converter dolly brake system the R-8P reinforces the service brake application signal
while eliminating the differential found in standard booster relay valves. Elimination of the
differential assures that all trailer and dolly brakes will receive the same strength signal even
during light brake applications.
By providing a balanced pressure signal to all trailer and dolly brakes, the R-8P aids in
achieving overall vehicle brake balance and stability. It also substantially improves brake lining
wear balance on combination vehicles by causing even the most distant brake to contribute its
share of braking effort.
The R-8P is basically a variation of the standard R-8 relay valve (catalog page 03-B-4). The
visual differentiation is that the R-8P does not incorporate a balance (anti-compound) port and
has a projection with support gussets extending from the center of the cover.
When replacing the standard dolly booster valve with an R-8P, use service replacement part
number 287114. (Refer to T.A.B.S. drawing BWS-846). When servicing the R-8P, use
maintenance kit 103799.
