Subject: R-8 Relay Valve Installation
Ref: Catalog Page 3B4; SD-69 In reference to catalog sheet 3B4 and instruction and Service Data Sheet SD-69, we
repeat the second paragraph of the description of the valve.
“The R-8 can be re mote mounted to a frame member or bracketing; or it can be mounted directly on a reservoir. The remote mounted valves generally have one or two ¾” pipe thread supply ports while the reservoir mounted types have an additional ¾” pipe thread port through the body mounting flange. Three delivery ports with various size pipe threads are provided for piping versatility. The R-8 has a single service port with a ¼” pipe thread location in the cover which can be rotated in 90° increments. The R-8 incorporates a unique quick release and anticompounding feature which is located above the service port on the cover. With the anti-compounding feature not in use, an exhaust cover is installed. When the anti-compounding feature is used, removal of the exhaust cover exposes a 1/8” pipe thread balance port. All ports are identified on the valve.”
We have reports that pipe plugs are being installed in the 1/8” pipe thread balance port on some field installations. This will trap air so that no exhaust can occur.
Do not plug this port, but be sure to install the exhaust cover or an R-8 such as 286370, 287347, or 287421 which include the exhaust cover.
