Bellovac ABT Instructions For Use Manual

Open the package using aseptic procedures. Place the catheter in situ. Remove the trocar, secure the catheter, and connect the catheter to the inlet tubing.
1. To vacuum the system and evacuate air from the operation area, close the inlet clamp.
2. Compress the bellows.
3. Open the inlet clamp again. Repeat steps 1–3 until blood starts to flow, or the bellows remain in a compressed, vacuumed state.
4. Close the outlet clamp.
If tourniquet is used: To avoid clotting, close the inlet clamp after the last compression of the bellows. Reopen the inlet clamp to start collection approximately 15 minutes after the release of the tourniquet.
5. Remove the protective cap from the bag inlet.
6. Attach the Autotransfusion bag to the outlet port of the bellows using the screw connector.
7. Mark with the identity of the patient, what time the collection started, and definite time when the collection should be terminated on the bag (blood collection should be completed within 6 hours of the start of collection).
Hang the Bellovac
ABT in an upright position, using the bed rail strap. Send the Transfusion Set, with the patient, to the postoperative ward.

BLOOD COLLECTION & BAG EXCHANGE
Blood collection
Make sure that the Autotransfusion bag is correctly marked, with the identity of the patient, what time the collection started, and definite time when the collection should be terminated.
1. To empty the contents of the bellows into the Autotransfusion bag, close the inlet clamp of the bellows.
2. Open the outlet clamp.
3. Compress the bellows slowly using the palms of both hands, transferring the liquid into the bag.
4. Close the outlet clamp.
5. Open the inlet clamp to continue drainage.
Bag exchange
Make sure that the outlet clamp of the bellows is closed.
6. Close the inlet clamp of the bag.
7. Disconnect the full Autotransfusion bag.
8. Seal off with the cap attached to the bag inlet.
9. Connect a new bag by turning the screw connector tightly. Be careful so that contamination is avoided.
10. Mark the new bag with the time when the bag was exchanged, patient identity, and time when collection must be terminated.
After six hours (maximum) of blood collection the Autotransfusion bag
must be exchanged for a standard Astra Tech drainage bag. The same procedure as described above is applied when changing to the Astra Tech Exchange drainage bag.

Set up
Go through with procedures 1–4 of the Set Up instructions. Thereafter connect the inlet port of the extension line to the bellows using the screw connector. Remove the protective cap from the autotransfusion bag and connect the bag to the outlet port of the extension line using the screw connector. Continue with procedure 7 of the Set Up instructions. If the Transfusion Set is to be connected to the venipuncture site before it is filled with blood, it has to be primed with saline solution.
Blood collection
Leave both clamps of the Extension Line open and work with the inlet and outlet clamps of the bellows as described in the instructions given for Blood collection.
Reinfusion
Make sure that the following clamps are closed prior to reinfusion; outlet clamp of the bellows, inlet and outlet clamp of the Extension Line, and inlet clamp of the bag. Carefully follow the instructions given for Reinfusion.
Exchange of bag and Extension Line
If a second unit blood is to be collected and reinfused, the Extension Line, Autotransfusion bag, and Transfusion Set must be exchanged. To avoid the blood from being disconnected from the body (for religious reasons), starts retransfusion before exchanging the extension line and autotransfusion bag. In this way the blood is always in contact with the body. Make sure that the outlet clamp of the bellows is closed. Close the inlet clamp and the outlet clamp of the Extension Line, and the inlet clamp of the Autotransfusion bag. Disconnect the used Extension Line, Autotransfusion bag and Transfusion Set, and connect new ones applying previously described procedures for Set Up.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The Extension Line is used as an extension between the Bellovac
ABT outlet and the Autotransfusion bag. The Extension Line can be used if it is necessary to maintain a closed circuit (for religious reasons) during blood collection and reinfusion.
