2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
2.1 INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on your purchase of this modern Bellfi res gas fi re. This quality product will provide you with many years of enjoyment due to the fl ame effect and warmth that it provides. Please read the instructions for use carefully before using the appliance for the fi rst time. Keep this booklet in a safe place.
2.2 BUILT-IN PROTECTION OF THE APPLIANCE
The appliance is fully protected by means of a thermo-electric pilot light shut off in the event of a gas escape from the main burner.
2.2.1 Safety
Do not place embers, vermiculite granules, wood logs or pebbles against the pilot light burner. Make sure that the pilot fl ame can burn at all times freely over the main burner. Only in this way is proper ignition of the main burner ensured. Ignoring these directions could lead to a dangerous situation.
It is essential that the appliance, the complete concentric fl ue system and the outlet are cleaned and inspected annually by a recognised fi tter/gas specialist. The safe operation of the appliance will thus remain guaranteed. See for additional instructions Chapter 4: Maintenance.
If the pilot fl ame goes out for any reason, wait for 5 minutes before attempting to re-light it.
The gas fi re must never be used with the door open or the door glass removed.
Never place fl ammable material on the ceramic log set.
The fi lling of the main burner with embers, vermiculite granules, wood logs or pebbles may not under any circumstances be changed or added to.
Do not place easily-fl ammable materials, such as nylon clothing or fl ammable liquids, in the vicinity of the gas fi re.

Ensure at all times that children and other people who are not aware of the operation of the gas appliance are only in the vicinity of the appliance exclusively under supervision.
Use a fi reguard to protect the people and children mentioned above against possible burns.
2.3 OPERATING YOUR GAS FIRE - GENERAL
Read these instructions carefully before lighting the fi re !!
The gas fi re can be operated with a pilot light that burns continuously. The ignition and control knob is located at the bottom of the front of your gas fi re or outside the gas fi re in a special box (supplied). If the control knob is fi tted to the front of the gas fi re, the gas fi re frame must be removed to access the knob.
The pilot light is situated in the front of the burner, behind a cowl. Should the pilot light
go out, you must wait fi ve (5) minutes before attempting to re-ignite the fi re.
Important
Once the fi re is lit, it must burn at maximum for approx. 10 minutes to allow the chimney to come up to temperature.
2.4 HAND CONTROL
The burner is operated using the control knob. Select the required setting and the burner will then burn at this setting until it is changed.

2.6 USING THE APPLIANCE FOR THE FIRST TIME
The gas fi re is coated with a lacquer layer resistant to high temperature. During the fi rst hours of operation, the burning in of the lacquer may result in an unpleasant smell. This is harmless, however. Operating the gas fi re at full capacity for a few hours, while ventilating the room, will eliminate the smell. After using your gas fi re for the fi rst few times, you may be aware of a light deposit on the inside off the glass. This is caused by the paint curing. Once your fi replace has cooled down, this deposit can be removed with glass cleaner or ceramic hob cleaner.
2.7 DAILY MAINTENANCE
• Ensure that as little dust, and as few particles of cigarette smoke, candles and oil lamps as possible pollute the air in the room in which the appliance is used. Heating of these particles by the convection system of the appliance could lead to discoloration of the walls and ceiling. It is therefore very important to ensure that the room in which the appliance is located is suffi ciently ventilated. Regularly remove
any dust deposits from behind the control fl ap by means of a vacuum cleaner.
Important: If the glass is broken or cracked, it must be immediately replaced before operating the gas fi re again.
If the appliance has two or more windows, regularly check whether the glass panes fi t fi rmly together. Gaps between the glass panes can lead to the leakage of fl ue gasses into the living room!
• If anything is spilt on the fi re, switch it off immediately and wait for it to cool down suffi ciently before cleaning. Never use scouring powder, aggressive cleaners or fi re polish on the gas fi re. Use only a dry lint free cloth.
• Heat resistant lacquer in aerosols can be obtained from your distributor. During the yearly maintenance, the lacquer can be used to repair small areas of damage.
The installation must only be carried out by a
“Gas Safe Register” registered installation engineer.

3 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 GENERAL
The gas fi re must be positioned and connected as a “room sealed system” (balance
fl ue) appliance by a “Gas Safe Register” registered gas installation engineer in accordance with the following installation instructions, nationally and locally applicable regulations (see “Technical Details/ Regulations” at the rear of this manual). If you have any queries regarding the installation, please consult your local gas company.
Important: Before beginning the installation, check that the details on the rating plate correspond to the gas type and pressure to which the appliance will be connected.
The appliance is factory set to the correct nominal heat input. The pilot light is set to the correct level of consumption.
It is possible to install the gas fi re with either a wall or roof outlet.
The roof connection must be carried out using the Barbas concentric fl ue system Ø100 mm - Ø150 mm. The fumes are exhausted naturally to the outside environment through the inner Ø100 mm pipe whereas the combustion air supply passes between the Ø100 mm and Ø150 mm pipes.
The wall connection must be carried out using the Barbas concentric fl ue system Ø130 mm - Ø200 mm. The fl ue gases are evacuated outside by means of natural draft through the internal pipe of Ø130 mm, whereas the combustion air is supplied between the pipes of Ø130 mm and Ø200 mm. The wall outlet
itself is, depending on the concentric fl ue gas system confi guration,
Ø100 mm - Ø150 mm or Ø130 mm - Ø200 mm.
The gas fi re can be installed in a completely sealed or mechanically ventilated house without extra ventilation and/or fume extraction.
The gas fi re can be installed as an insertion into an existing open fi re place or as a built-in appliance in a new fi re place.
In order to prevent the fi replace heating up excessively, it must be properly ventilated by installing vents at the top and bottom of the fi replace.
The appliance can be fi tted with a convection package as an optional extra. This is a “convection jacket” for around (or above) the appliance, two fl exible aluminium pipes and two built-in convection vents. This enables hot air to be circulated into the room.

Instructions for use and installation instructions
When handling a stainless steel or copper color frame, we advise you to use the special gloves supplied, and to leave them with the owner of the hearth after installation.
If an existing chimney is to be used, please consult your installer fi rst. If the chimney was previously used for a wood or coal fi re, then it should be cleaned by an expert.
3.2 BARBAS CONCENTRIC FLUE SYSTEM Ø100 MM - Ø150 MM AND
Ø130 MM - Ø200 MM
The gas fi re, in combination with the Barbas concentric fl ue system [Ø100 mm - Ø150 mm] and/or [Ø130 mm - Ø200 mm] (rigid and/or fl exible) has been approved in accordance with the European CE-norm for gas appliances and may therefore be used only with this system. The guarantee is invalidated if the appliance is (completely or partially) installed using a different system. The Barbas concentric fl ue [Ø100 mm - Ø150 mm] and [Ø130 mm - Ø200 mm] systems can be used with either a newly-built or existing chimney.

Instructions for use and installation instructions
3.4.3 Gas connection
Operation (gas regulating block (and receiver))
within the appliance:
The gas connection Ø12 mm (3/8”) is located on the right-hand side of the appliance.
Operation (gas regulating block (and receiver)) outside the appliance (in the operating unit):
The gas connection is situated where the operating unit is built in near to the appliance.
Use only gas piping with a minimum diameter of 1/2” and a shut-off valve.
3.4.4 Operating unit
If the appliance is fi tted with a operating unit comprising gas control block and receiver, this will be located, once it has been built in, at a maximum of 50 cm from the left or right hand side of the appliance.
3.4.5 Convection package connections
When fi tting a convection package, consideration should be given to the openings at approximately 1 meter above the appliance for the warm air exiting grids. If a convection package is to be fi tted, the metal “insulation” shield at the top of the appliance, must also be removed.
3.5 POSITIONING THE APPLIANCE
Important: The fi re and fi replace must be mounted on a concrete fl oor. If there is no concrete fl oor, it is essential to re-enforce the fl oor boards from beneath with concrete.
Min. 5 cm
Min. 5 cm
Figure 19: A clearence of at least 5 cm must be maintained between the appliance and the fl oor.
42
Bellfi res
English
Instructions for use and installation instructions
Never place the appliance directly on the fl oor, but always make sure that there is a clearence of at least 5 cm between the appliance and the fl oor.
Never use combustible materials during the installation.
Ventilate the fi replace, by allowing vents above and below the fi replace.
During installation of the gas fi re, a clearance of 3 mm should be maintained on all sides of the appliance to allow for expansion of the appliance during operation.
Do not insulate the appliance! Only the top and sides may be fi tted with a strip of white, loose insulation wool (heat-resistant to 1000°C), width 15 cm max. to protect the wall.
Do not use fi breglass or Rockwool, or any other sort of insulating material. These emit a pungent odour. This is considered extremely unpleasant. They may also cause discolouring of the column.
Flammable materials, such as curtains, should not be placed in the vicinity of the gas fi re. Minimum safe distance: 100 cm.
View Bell Room Divider Large: If the appliance is hung, use the proper connecting method, suitable for the particular wall or partition.
The appliance may only be installed on a wall constructed from non-fl ammable material.
If desired, fi t a convection package to the appliance. (See chapter 3.1)
43
Bellfi res
English
Instructions for use and installation instructions
When fi tting the appliance, it can be levelled with the adjustable feet.
Position the gas supply pipe such that it can be easily mounted after installation. If the appliance has a operating unit, the gas pipe must be leaded to where the operating unit (built in), the gas regulating block (and the receiver) assembly are fi tted.
Push the appliance against the wall and ensure that it is level. The appliance may not
be installed against a fl ammable rear wall.
Attach the appliance to the wall with 2 wedge bolts. Use the adjustable mounting brackets at the top of the appliance for this.
View Bell Room Divider Large: If the appliance is hung on the wall, attach it with 4 Ø8 mm or Ø10 mm key bolts. Ensure that the appliance is hanging level and that the concentric exhaust vent/combustion air supply connection of the appliance is in perfect alignment with the hole in the ceiling or wall!

3.5.1 Connecting the gas
Important: During gas connection, take care not to twist the gas regulating block. Make sure that both the gas regulating block and the supply pipes are not subjected to stresses.
Appliance with operation in the separate operating unit (built in or otherwise):
• The control unit and piping are supplied separately (fl at packed)
Remove the decorative edging and door of the operating unit. Fit the separate operating unit with the gas control block and receiver max. 50 cm from the appliance.

Instructions for use and installation instructions
Appliance with operation in the separate operating unit (built in or otherwise).
• Gas control block and piping supplied as an pre-assembly.
First detach the bracket with the gas control block from the appliance. Fit the separate control unit max. 50 cm from the appliance. Fit the receiver in the top of the control unit.
Connect the piezo cable, the 8-terminal
cable
and
the two thermocouple cables to the receiver (see Chapter 6: Electrical
Diagram).
Carefully move the bracket with the gas regulating block and piping towards the control unit. Fit the bracket to the bottom of the control unit. Make sure that you do not damage any of the piping or detach any compression couplings while doing this. After you have done this, check the compression couplings for leaks.
General:
Route all piping and cables from the operating unit to the appliance through an easily accessible hollow cavity or a heat-resistant pipe of minimum Ø50 mm.
During subsequent installation of the operating unit, protect the gas regulating block and piping against encasement by cement etc.
Important: Cement and chalk can damage the piping and can, in turn, lead to gas leaks.
3.5.2 Connecting the concentric fl ue
Assemble the concentric fl ue system according to one of the examples in section 3.4.1, fi gure 9 to 18 inclusive. Make sure that all connections are completely gas tight.
3.5.3 Building in the appliance
Remove the front of the casing, if applicable. Decide on positions of the vents (grilles above and below the fi replace) and, if applicable, the hot air grids of the convection package.
The brickwork must be built up around the hearth. In connection with the hearth expanding during burning: there must be at least 3 mm clearance on either side of the appliance. Do not build up the brickwork farther than the angle irons/brackets (keep in mind the thickness of any plastering!).
Connect up the convection package, if applicable.
49
Bellfi res
English
Instructions for use and installation instructions
The optional mantle iron is intended for supporting the brickwork above the hearth. The mantle iron must rest on the brickwork on both sides so that upward building is
possible. The brickwork therefore must not rest on the fi replace; there must be approx. 3 mm clearance in connection with the weight.
If using other materials, such as stone or heat-resistant plating, you should follow the supplier’s instructions.
Once the fi replace has been fi nished, you can now, for appliances with an operating unit, fi t the frame with the small door to the operating unit.
After installation in a new fi replace and/or applying new cement work, the appliance cannot be used for at least four weeks.
3.5.4 Checking the gas connection
After connection of the gas supply, check that all connections are completely gas tight using soapy water or a leak tester.
3.5.5 Positioning the ceramic log set or marble pebbles
The appliance can be supplied with:
• Ceramic log set + embers
• Marble pebbles white (small, white marble stones)
• Marble pebbles grey (small, grey marble stones)
Important: • Carefully place the
chips of wood/embers/vermiculite granules/ log set or marble pebbles, on and around the main burner according to the directions in this chapter.
• Do not place any chips of wood/embers/vermiculite granules/ log set or marble pebbles against the pilot light burner. For that reason, the main burner has a protective pilot-light cowl.
Never remove this cowl! Make sure that the pilot fl ame can burn at all times freely over the main burner. Only in this way is proper ignition of the main burner ensured. Ignoring these directions could lead to a dangerous situation.
• Make sure that all burner orifi ces remains free at all times!
• The burner bed (with
chips of wood/embers/vermiculite granules) and the positioning of the logs or marble pebbles must not be changed.
• Only use those items supplied! These been rigorously checked and the quantities adapted to the appliance.
• Replacement parts, including the ceramic mat are available from your dealer.
• Fitting may only be carried out by a qualifi ed person.

Important: • Do not place any marble pebbles in front of the pilot light. Make sure that the pilot light can burn freely over the main burner.
• Keep the burner orifi ces unblocked.
Only this way a proper ignition of the main burner is ensured.
Once the logs/marble pebbles have been positioned, the door must be closed again or the glass must be replaced. FINGER-TIGHTEN any bolts and/or screws used. Do not
over-tighten them as this may break the glass!
If applicable, the frame can now be replaced. Note: Do not fi t the frame until the wall
has been fi nished. Use the protective items supplied (gloves or cloth). Do not use
masking tape!
3.5.6 Mounting fl ue gas restriction plate
Depending on the length and shape of the concentric fl ue system and the chimney
construction, you should, if indicated, fi t a restriction plate with a certain width (B) into the ceiling of the combustion chamber. To do this, see the set-up options as listed in fi gure 9 through 18.
Important: Ensure that the correct fl ue gas restriction plate is mounted. Use of the correct fl ue gas restriction plate will provide
optimum effi ciency, fl ame effect and combustion. Mounting an incorrect fl ue gas restriction plate can result in damage to the gas fi re.

3.5.7 Checking the appliance following installation
After installation, visually check the gas fl ame. When the fi re is ignited, the fl ames should be short and blue/yellow in colour. These fl ames should gradually increase in height and become more yellow. When all fl ames are yellow, the gas fi re has reached the correct temperature.
THE GAS FIRE IS NOW READY FOR USE

4 MAINTENANCE
4.1 ANNUAL MAINTENANCE
It is essential that the appliance, the complete concentric
fl ue system and the outlet are cleaned and inspected annually by a recognised fi tter/gas specialist. The safe operation of the appliance will thus remain guaranteed.
Maintenance consists of the following:
• Remove fi rst the embers, vermiculite granules, logs set or pebbles from the main
burner and carefully clean these with a soft brush.
• Clean and inspect (visually) the main burner, pilot light, combustion chamber,
fl ue system and combustion air intake. Dust can be removed using a vacuum cleaner.
• After cleaning; Carefully replace the embers, vermiculite granules, logs set or pebbles on and
around the main burner according to the installation directions in this instruction booklet.
Do not place any embers, vermiculite granules, logs or pebbles against the
pilot light burner. Make sure that the pilot fl ame can burn at all times freely over the main burner. Only in this way is proper ignition of the main burner ensured.
Ignoring these directions could lead to a dangerous situation.
• Check the gas supply, fl ue system, and combustion air supply route for leaks.
• Check the correct operation of the gas regulating block, thermocouple
circuit and the ignition of the main burner.
• Check the gas inlet-pressure (both when the appliance is off and when it burns
at maximum) and the burner pressure.
• Check the complete concentric fl ue system including the outlet construction.

5 FAULTS
Possible reasons for the gas fi re going out are:
• The concentric fl ue system is not installed according to one of the methods detailed in Paragraph 3.4
• An incorrect “fl ue gas restriction plate” is fi tted.
• The pilot light extinguishes if fumes are not exhausted or are insuffi ciently exhausted.
• The pilot light is either dirty or defective.
• Insuffi cient gas pressure.
• Thermocouple voltage is too low. This is usually caused by insuffi cient heating of the thermocouple by the pilot light.
• Dirty electrical contacts in the thermo-electrical system; for example, the thermocouple connection.
• Batteries in receiver or remote control are fl at
