ren ewabl e o nce per year. Un like other prod ucts, Pa rent al Control
allows yo ur subsc ri ption to co ver your en ti re ne twork wi th no “per
PC” charges.

How Belkin Parental Control Works

Once Belk in Parental Con trol is enabled , e very web requ es t, or “get” ,
res ults in two requ ests from the Rout er, one for th e s ite itself , a nd the
second fo r a n approval (Yes or No) from Bel kin. The ra ti ng is retriev ed
fro m our datab ase of over 4 mil lion sites . I f the re spons e i s “ Yes” ,
then the w eb site is pas sed to the com puter, usu al ly with zero del ay.
If the respons e i s “ No”, the n t he website wi ll not be disp layed an d
the compu ter will be sh own a Polic y Viola tion screen sta ting why th e
websit e w as denie d.

If the request ed website is within the we b f ilter da tabase, th e a nswer
will be in st antan eo us, and usu ally will c au se no delay. Howeve r, if
the site reque sted is not in th e d atabase , t he web filt er will ins ta ntly
rate the s it e (give it a real-t ime rating ) a nd add it to th e d atabase .
Sites tha t req uire real -time ra ti ngs some times take be tween 1 and
5 seconds to complet e. In most cas es , the user wil l n ot perceive a
delay. Sites th at are n ot in the databa se re present a small pe rc entage
of total s it es. Real -time rati ng is extremely us eful for st opping new
porn ograp hy sites as they ap pear.

The Parental Control Manager

Belkin Pa re ntal Control al lows for a parent or m an ager if use d i n a n
off ice, to be des ignated as the Parental Co ntro l M anage r. Th is is a
rol e comple tely separ ate from that of th e R outer Admi nistrat or, which
is establ ished se pa ratel y w hen you set up yo ur Router. It is id eal
in situat ions whe re a chi ld in the househ old, or an emp loyee in an
off ice, can ac t a s t he Router Adm inistra tor, but shou ld be re stricte d i n
terms of w eb site acc ess. Once Paren tal Control is set up ,
e-mail no tificat ions wil l a utomati cally be sent to the Parental Co ntro l
Manage r w henever th e servic e i s d isabled , o verri dd en, or when
passwo rd s o r e -mail addres ses are changed .

Setting up Parental Control

Automatic Setup

The Route r m ust be conn ected to th e I ntern et before setti ng up
Parental Co ntro l. If you have no t s et up the Rout er to conne ct to the
Internet, fo llow the step s i n y our Quic k I nstalla tion Guide to set up
the Route r b efore attemp ting to set up Pa re ntal Control .

Automa tic setup i s t he easiest wa y t o get Parenta l C ontrol up
and runni ng.

After set ting up the Ro uter to con ne ct to the Inte rne t f or the first
time, a se tu p page will au tomatic ally be dis played whe n y ou open
your browse r. Follow the st eps below.

1. Open a browser on an y comput er on the netw or k. A page will

be displa yed promptin g y ou to sign up for Pa re ntal Control
for six mo nt hs FREE. If th is page doe s n ot display, foll ow the
instru ctions for Ma nual Set up in the next se ction of this gu ide.

2. Select th e o ption th at lets you en ab le Parental C on trol. If you

click “No Th anks” , y ou will not be as ked to sign up ag ai n.
You ca n m anual ly enable Paren ta l Control at any ti me later by
follow ing the Man ua l Setup ins tructio ns.

3. You wi ll be prompted t o c eate a passwo rd an d p ro vide an e-m ai l

address to whi ch change n ot ifica ti ons shou ld be sent. En te r the
e-mail ad dress you wish to use , a nd enter a pas sword to be used
to manage th e Parental Co nt ro l f unction . N ote: Thi s p assword
is different tha n t he password use d t o m anage th e R outer and
should be un ique to kee p u nauthor ized use rs from ch angin g t he
Parental Co ntro l s ettin gs .

4. Once you h av e entered thi s i nformat ion, the Parent al Control

feature is act ivated. To view or ch ange the se tt ings, fo llow
the directi ons in the sec ti on calle d “ Managin g P arental
Control Set tings.”
