OR more than fifty years the Baush Machine
F
Tool Company has built various types of
boring machinery ranging from the horizontal
boring mill type to the vertical multiple spindle
type.
During this World War II such heavy demands
placed on close tolerances, and fine surface
were
finishes in the manufacture of ordnance and air
craft goods that the Baush Machine Tool Com
pany was obliged to improve (through experience
gained in the past) their existing boring machine
designs. The machine thus improved and
described herein affords higher precision, greater
accuracy and finer surface finishes in its boring
jobs and is of such simple construction and design
that semi-skilled labor can operate and maintain
it with ease.
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION FEATURES.
The machine is designed to minimize vibration
and provide maximum accuracy. The spindle head
is stationary, only the spindle rotates. The feed
is accomplished through the table which feeds
the work up to the cutting tool. This design re
duces the number of moving parts in the head and
enables rigid mounting of spindle head to a solid
supporting column thus affording a greater

possibility of maintaining spindle alignment and
accurate boring.
MACHINE BASE.
The base of the machine, which entirely sup
ports the work table and houses the hydraulic feed
cylinder, is constructed of one piece heavy iron
casting, heavily ribbed to prevent distortion,
settling and vibration. The top of the base also has
an integrally cast coolant trough and coolant
sump. Hydraulic and electrical controls which
are readily accessible for maintenance are all
housed inside of the base giving it a clean cut
appearance.
HEAD POST.
The post on the machine is also of one piece
heavy iron casting properly ribbed and securely
bolted to the base. The post has a large rectangu
lar machined and scraped pad with double “
Tee
slots for mounting one or more boring heads.
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM.
The hydraulic pump is of a low pressure type
to minimize pumping pulsations and provide a
smooth How of oil into the large hydraulic cylinder
in the bottom of the machine base. The pump and
the directly coupled electric motor are mounted
on the oil reservoir which serves as a base and is
separate from the machine proper. This arrange
ment makes possible easier cleaning out of the
reservoir and maintenance of the hydraulic system.
BORING HEAD.
The boring head and spindle are of unusually
heavy construction for rigidity. The spindle is
mounted on two heavy duty pre-loaded precision
type roller bearings and is driven by Vee belt from
motor mounted on special supports in the post.
To obtain the smoothest possible surface finish in
the boring, the tools must rotate at the proper
speed. To accomplish this and to accommodate
the various sizes of bores and materials in the
work, Baush can furnish suitable size spindles and
speeds up to 10,000 R.P.M. Spindle speeds can
be readily varied by changing the Vee belt sheaves.
If desired, electronic speed regulator can be in
stalled at additional cost upon special request.
The table is supported by a sturdy round column
sliding in bronze split taper bushings mounted in
TABLE COLUMN.
heavy cast iron members cast integrally with the
machine base. The column is hardened, ground
and carefully lapped with the tapered bushings
for constant snugness throughout the entire travel
of the table. Feed of table is accomplished by the
hydraulic piston ram placed directly below the
”
table column thus preventing any possibility of
eccentric pressure on the table — a center feed
principle.
HYDRAULIC CONTROLS.
Variations in rate of cutting feed may be ob
tained by turning the feed selector knob located
conveniently at the front of the machine to any
desired point on a graduated dial for feeds from
to 20" a minute. The start and stop of the
feed cycle is obtained by movement of hand lever.
A return cutting feed is provided through a sec
ondary lever-operated valve which gives boring
in both directions if desired. The feed cycle may
be set for either automatic control or hand control
by adjustment of the trip dogs located in the
table operating mechanism. With these controls
the machine provides automatically: a rapid ap
proach up and down, cutting feeds up and down,
and dwell in the stroke at the bottom of bore.
