.
for Jhe Assembly Operafrion and Maintenance
To attach the arm assembly to the base column
1. Insert the lower end of the center post rr 2 through the opening at the top of the column # 1.
2. Make sure that the flange #3 on the center post rests squarely on
the column and fasten the two parts t/- together rigidly with six Allen head screws.
To use the machine as a driller:
1. Examine the lower end of the driving spindle #5 to determine if it is a drill spindle or a lead screw tapping spindle. The tapping spindle will have the thread pitch stamped there, such as or
16 T. If it is a drilling spindle, no marking
will be seen.
2.
If the spindle happens to be one for tapping, then to exchange it for the drill spindle, first grasp the spindle #5 with one hand and then push in the latch #4 with the other hand to release the spindle. A slight pull on the spindle will bring the spindle assembly out of the quill #12.
3.
Insert the drill spindle into the quill, taking care that the splined spindle drive shaft slips freely over the drive key in the head. Then latch the spindle in place.
4. Loosen the quill binder #13 to allow movement of the quill, which is used for feeding the drill.
However, to prevent the quill from dropping freely under its weight, it is best to have the binder under a slight pressure.
5. Insert the drill and set the drilling depth gage #16 to the desired depth.
6. To set the depth gage, first feed the drill spindle
down to the desired depth by turning the hand wheel #11 and then adjust and lock the two lock nuts #17 at that spot over the stop bracket #19.
7. Finally disengage the drive to the automatic starter
switch #9 by turning the latching knob #18 (pull knob to unlatch) in front of head marked the side marked also that when the knob # 18 is placed in the posi tion to drill, it automatically closes a switch inside the drill head. This switch converts the reverse button to a motor start button.
8. The machine is now ready for drilling. The motor control buttons are located in front of the head just below the dial #9. Push the start button to start the motor and push the
button to stop the motor.
To use the machine as a tapper:
1. Retract the quill and bind securely in place.
2. Exchange the drill spindle for the
,.
J
spindle as described above. The tapping spindle comes assembled with
lead screw. Since the lead same pitch as the tap to be used, it is

that the tapping spindle marked with the proper
threads per inch be used. The various lead screw assemblies should be kept in the drawers #6 located under the top of the adjustable knee table #7.
3. Connect the drive to the automatic counter switch #9 by turning the latching knob #18 back from
the side of the head marked
marked The purpose of the counter switch is to auto matically control the tapping cycle. With the knob # 18 in front of the head marked motor control switch will now operate as indicated above the push buttons. However, use reverse button only in emergency.
4. Set the indicator on the dial of the automatic counter switch #9 for the desired tap travel. This is done as follows:
Refer to the table #10 attached to the left hand side of the tapping head #8. Read down the left column and choose the desired length of tap travel. Follow across to the desired thread pitch and the number in the square will be the dial indicator setting for the counter switch.
5. To drive taps, use tap drivers as supplied by J. C. Glenzer Co., of Detroit, or Scully Jones & Co., of Chicago. Insert tap driver and tap into the spindle and the machine is ready for tapping.
Four inches of adjustment is provided on quill
#12 and can be adjusted by loosening binder #13 and by turning hand wheel #11 to the right
or left. Eighteen inches of vertical adjustment for work is provided in the adjustable knee table. An infinitely variable Reeves drive is incorporated in the machine to give proper spindle speeds for the different tapping conditions. The motor is equipped with a magnetic disc brake which is used for stopping the motor during tap ping operations. Brake adjustments are made at #20.
Instructions for Lubrication:
Grease the quill by means of Alemite fitting # 14. Keep oil in head to the level of oil gauge # 15.
CAUTION: It is extremely important that tapping
spindle be removed and drilling spindle be used instead when setting machine for drilling. Should an attempt be made to continue using the tapping spindle for drilling, serious damage will result to
the machine. Use
Houghton Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or equivalent.
Grease motor fittings and Reeves drive with pres sure grease twice a year.
