1 Installation
STEP 1
Plug a standard (straight) network cable (h, not included)
into the network por t (G) of the Exst reamer an d the
other en d into your hub or switch. You can als o use a
crossover network cable (not included) for a direct
connection to your PC.
STEP 2
Apply one of the three options:
i) Plug standard headphones or the earphone (f, not
include d) into the hea dphone output (F) an d listen.
ii) Plug your sp eakers into the outputs (L ) using the
speaker s crew termin al banana j acks (e) and lis ten.
iii) Plug an optica l cable into th e S/P DIF outp ut (J) and
connect the cable to an input of your mixing console
or monitor ing device a nd listen.
STEP 3
Conne ct the power su pply (b) to the device (socke t K)
and then to an electrical outle t with the app ropriate co rd.
STEP 4
i) The E xstreame r will now acq uire an IP add ress and
announc e it over the aud io outputs ( if no DHCP
server i s available this can take u p to 5 minutes).
ii) If you did not co nnect any audio outpu ts in step 2,
either see the next page for the ARP command
procedu re, or use the “B arix Disc overy Tool” Java
application (download the latest version from
www.bari x.com) on your computer ( Windows, Ma c
or Linux) a nd click the “ Get” butto n to find out wh ich
IP address t he device has obtaine d (see pictur e at the
bottom of the p age). Make sure th at the Ethernet
address (M AC) matches yo ur device (se e label on th e
bottom of the d evice).
Now that yo u know the IP add ress proc eed to the nex t
section “Network configuration by web browser”.
If you were n ot able to obtain the device’s current
IP addre ss with the pr evious step s see secti on
"Troubleshooting".
2 Network configuration
by web browser
Most Barix applictaions require no configuration but use
DHCP to configure network settings dynamically.
If you nee d to use static (f ixed) net work setti ngs follow
steps 1 to 3, oth erwise c ontinue from step 4.
STEP 1
Open your web browse r.
STEP 2
Enter the I P address th at was annou nced by the Exstreamer
and press Enter. Example: 192.168.0.12 Click on the
Configuration button, then on Advances Settings/Network.
STEP 3
In order to m ake the appl ication wor k the followi ng parameters
must be set (check wit h your networ k administrator):
• static IP addres s (the default «0.0.0.0» sets autom atic
discovery: BootP, DHCP) and netmask
If you your d evices ar e connecte d via router s also:
• Gateway I P address
Hit the «Apply» b utton to save all cha nges. Th e device will
reboot w ith the conf igured IP ad dress.
STEP 4
To complete the application setup, download the firmware
documentation from www.barix.com. Download the
product manual for additional information about the hard-
ware installation, technical and mechanical details
as well as i nstructi ons on updat ing or changing the load ed
application firmware.

3 Setting temporary IP address
using ARP command
This pro cedure wi ll work only i n a local net work.
After th is proced ure the tempo rary IP wi ll be active
only until restar t/reboot. A fter a restart the pro cedure
has to be repeated.
STEP 1
Either u se a networ k cable to link the Exstre amer and
the PC directly, or connect the Exstreamer to the PC
via your n etwork switch and power t he device. M ake
sure that you have a valid static IP address confi gured on
your PC (e.g. 192.168.0.2)
STEP 2
Window s : For a command wi ndow. click on «Star t», click
on «Run..», in the «Open» f ield ty pe cmd , c lick on « OK».
OSX / Linu x : Open a term inal window.
STEP 3
Please proceed to ste p 4 if you linked the PC direct ly to
the devi ce in step 1. To ensure that you use a free IP
addres s (not alread y used by another device in the network)
please use the Ping command. To verify availability in
this example we assu me the PC to have the I P address
«192.168.0.2» a nd want to check if «19 2.168.0.6 » is free.
Typ e p in g 19 2.168.0.6 and hit the «Enter» key. You
should get no reply w hich gives you reasona ble assertion
that the «pinged» IP is avai lable.
STEP 4
Look for th e Exstrea mer’s MAC address printed on a
label o n the bottom of th e device (12 hex digi ts, separated
by a hyphe n every 2 dig its). Type into the windows com-
mand window
arp -s 192.168.0.6 00-08-E1-00-B1-77
or on a OSX or L inux system t ype into the te rminal
arp -s 1 92.168.0.6 00:0 8:E1:00:B1:77
and hi t the «Ente r» key (replac e the digi ts accord ing to your
devices MAC address). You must have administrative rights
to be able to d o so (sudo on OSX / Linux).
STEP 5
Now we have to ma ke the Exstre amer liste n to the IP
addres s «192.168.0.6» u sing the Telnet comma nd. To do so
type into the comma nd window telnet 192.168.0.6 1
and hi t the «Ente r» key (the num ber «one » must be there
for this c ommand to wor k correctly !!!). The Exst reamer wi ll
immediately refuse the connection on port 1, but will be
available for browser access a s long as the de vice stays
powered.
STEP 6
To check if the E xstreamer is respon ding you can use
the ping c ommand ag ain. To do so type p in g 19 2.168.0.6
and hit th e «Enter» key. If you do get a r eply the IP ad dress
192.168.0.6 can be us ed to access the Exs trea mer using a
web brows er. Please go bac k to section «2 Ne twork con gura-
tion by web b rowser» to cong ure a static IP a ddress. If you do
get «req uest timed o ut» then plea se repeat ste p 5 careful ly (you
most like ly misty ped the teln et command ) or repeat the entire
procedure. If the ARP method doe s not work for you, refer to
the user manual for further methods.
4 Troubleshooting
• If the s tatus LEDs (C) stay da rk check the power
cabling (installation step 3).
• Check if the gre en LINK L ED (H) is l it, if it i s not then
check your network cabling (network port G)
• If you h ave doubts about the current device se ttings
you can revert the device to its factory defau lts by
press ing the Rese t button (A) u ntil the red status LED
(C) blink s rapidly (t akes about 10 se conds). The de vice
will reb oot once the b utton is rel eased.
