General Instruction for 240V Machines...
Good Working Practices/Safety
The following suggestions will enable you to observe good working practices, keep yourself
and fellow workers safe and maintain your tools and equipment in good working order.
Mains Powered Tools
Primary Precautions
These machines are supplied with a moulded 13 Amp. plug and 3 core power cable. Before
using the machine inspect the cable and the plug to make sure that neither are damaged. If any
damage is visible have the tool inspected/repaired by a suitably qualified person. If it is
necessary to replace the plug, it is preferable to use an ‘unbreakable’ type that will resist
damage on site. Only use a 13 amp plug, and make sure the cable clamp is tightened securely.
Fuse at 13 amp. If extension leads are to be used, carry out the same safety checks on them,
and ensure that they are correctly rated to safely supply the current that is required for your
machine.
Work Place/Environment
Make sure when the machine is placed that it sits firmly on a stand/bench, that it does not rock,
that is sufficiently clear of adjacent obstacles so that machining operations will not be
impeded. Check you have adequate clearance both in front of, and behind the machine when
machining long timber. If you are liable to be processing unwieldy or awkward work pieces, it is
suggested that you consider fastening the machine down to the stand/bench, and perhaps the
purchase of outfeed roller stands.
The machine is not designed for sub-aqua operation, do not use when or where it is liable to
get wet. If the machine is set up in the open, and it starts to rain, cover it up or move it into the
dry. If machine has got wet; dry it off as soon as possible, with a cloth or paper towel. Do not
use 240va.c. powered machines anywhere within a site area that is flooded or puddled, and do
not trail extension cables across wet areas. Keep the machine clean; it will enable you to more
easily see any damage that may have occurred. Clean the machine with a damp soapy cloth if
needs be, do not use any solvents or cleaners, as these may cause damage to any plastic parts
or to the electrical components.

Keep the work area as uncluttered as is practical, this includes personnel
as well as material. Under no circumstances should CHILDREN be allowed
in work areas.

General Instruction for 240V Machines...
It is good practice to leave the machine unplugged until work is about to commence, also make
sure to unplug the machine when it is not in use, or unattended. It is also good practice to use
switch outlet supply points. Always disconnect by pulling on the plug body and not the cable.
Once you are ready to commence work, remove all tools used in the setting operations (if any)
and place safely out of the way. Re-connect the machine.
Carry out a final “tightness” check e.g. fence, blade guard, etc., check that the ‘machining path’
(the path that the work piece will travel) is unobstructed.
Make sure you are comfortable before you start work, balanced, not reaching etc.,
If the work you are carrying out is liable to generate flying grit, dust or chips, or the timber is
‘spiky’ with lots of arris splinters, wear the appropriate safety clothing, goggles, gloves, masks
etc., If the work operation appears to be excessively noisy, wear ear-defenders. If you wear your
hair in a long style, wearing a cap, safety helmet, hairnet, even a sweatband, will minimise the
possibility of your hair being caught up in the rotating parts of the machine, likewise,
consideration should be given to the removal of rings and wristwatches, if these are liable to be
a ‘snag’ hazard. Consideration should also be given to non-slip footwear, etc.
Observe the old woodworkers adage of never allowing your hand/fingers within one
handbreadth of the blades.
Do not work with machine tools of any description if you are tired, your attention is
wandering or you are being subjected to distraction. A deep cut, or worse; is not worth it!
Do not use this machine within the designated safety areas of flammable liquid stores or
in areas where there may be volatile gases. There are very expensive, very specialised
machines for working in these areas, THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
Check that blades are the correct type and size, are undamaged and are kept clean and sharp,
this will maintain their operating performance and lessen the loading on the machine.
Above all, OBSERVE…. make sure you know what is happening around you, and USE YOUR
COMMON SENSE.

General Safety Instructions...
1. KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL. Read the owner's manual carefully. Learn the tool's pplications
and limitations, as well as the specific potential hazards peculiar to it.
2. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and working order.
3. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit of checking to see that
adjusting keys and wrenches are removed from tool before turning it on.
4. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents.
5. DON'T USE IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don’t use power tools in damp or wet
locations, or expose them to rain. Keep ' work area well lit. Dont use tool in presence of
flammable liquids or gases.
6. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be kept safe distance from work area.
7. MAKE WORKSHOP CHILD PROOF with padlocks, master switches or by removing starter
keys.

8. DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
9. USE RIGHT TOOL. Dont force tool or attachment to do a job for which it was not designed;
for example, don’t use circular saw for cutting tree limbs or logs.
10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets,
or other jewelry which may get caught in moving parts. Non-slip footwear is recommended.
Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.
11. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also use face or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty
everyday, eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses, they are NOT safety glasses.
12. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vice to hold work when practical. It's safer than using
your hand and it frees both hands to operate tool.
13. DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
14. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for best and safest
performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
15. DISCONNECT TOOL before servicing; when changing accessories such as blades, bits,
cutters, and the like.
16. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTIONAL STARTING. Make sure switch is in OFF position
before plugging in or inserting battery if applicable.
17. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult the owner's manual for recommended
accessories. The use of improper accessories may cause risk of injury to persons.
18. NEVER STAND ON TOOL. Serious injury could occur if the tool is tipped or if the cutting
tool is accidentally contacted.
19. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further use of the tool, a guard or other part that is
damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate property and perform its
intended function - check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, its operation.
A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced.
20. DIRECTION OF FEED. Feed work into a blade or cutter against the direction of rotation of
the blade or cutter only.
21. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNING UNATTENDED. TURN power off. Dont leave tool until it
comes to a complete stop.
22. DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool by cord or pull it to disconnect from socket. Keep
cord from heat, oil and
sharp edges.
23. USE SUITABLE VOLTAGE. Before connecting the machine to a power source, be sure that
the voltage supplied is the same as that specified on the nameplate of the machine.

Specific Safety Instructions...
1. Never work without the protective equipment prescribed for the relevant operation and do
not make any modifications to the machine that could undermine safety.
2. Children and young persons must not operate this machine. This rule does not apply to
young persons over the age of 16 being trained and supervised by an expert.
3. Prior to all work, make sure that the safety and operating equipment is securely attached. Any
parts if damaged must be repaired correctly or replaced.
4. Set up the machine on solid ground so that the table is horizontal and the machine cannot tip
over.
5. Never work with pieces which are too big or too small for the machine's capacity.
6. Before planing, examine the workpiece for metal objects and stones and remove them if
necessary.
7. When planing, make sure that the cutter head not used is covered by the knife guard.
8. When planing thin pieces of timber, suitable devices must be used to ensure that these small
pieces are properly positioned and guided.
9. The anti-kickback device of the planer must be checked regularly to ensure that it remains in
proper working condition. All pawls of this device must move freely and must drop down by their
own weight when lifted. The point of these pawls must be kept sharp.
10. Do not begin planing until the cutter head has reached full speed.
11. When planning, take up a working position so that you are always on one side of the
machine away from the area directly in front of or behind the cutter head.
12. Always keep your hands well away from the cutter head or the chip ejection area while the
machine is running.
13. A uniform feed rate when planing increases the life of the knives and reduces the risk of
accidents.
14. The planing knives must be sharpened or replaced in good time as blunt knives do not only
increase the risk of kickback, but also impose an unnecessary load on the motor.
15. The knives must be properly mounted and clamped (see CHAPTER CHANGE AND
SHARPEN KNIVES)
16. Before changing the knife and eliminating malfunctions (including the removal of trapped
chips) pull out the mains plug.
If used incorrectly, woodworking machines can be
dangerous. For this reason, always comply with the safety
instructions in this chapter, the accident prevention regulations of the relevant
liability insurance association or equivalent, and the safety regulations applicable in
the country concerned!

17. The sawdust created by planing makes it difficult to see as clearly as necessary and can
impair operator's health in certain circumstances. If not working outdoors or on well ventilated
premises therefore, the machine must be connected with the dust extraction port to an extractor
unit, such as a small portable dust extractor. When operating for a long period, the air velocity
must be at least 20 m/s (65.6 ft/sec.)
18. The sound pressure level at the workplace generally exceeds 85 dB(A). Users should
therefore wear ear protectors.
19. When operating the machine outdoors, use of an earth-leakage circuit-breaker is
recommended.
20. Any work on the electric components of the machine must be carried out only by a qualified
electrician.
21. Only original spare parts and accessories must be used. Otherwise the manufacturer does
not offer any warranty and does not accept any liability.
22. Regular cleaning of the machine is an important safety factor. Before beginning this task,
pull out the mains plug.
Additional Safety Rules for Planer Thicknessers...
Before connecting a tool to a power source (mains switch
power point receptacle, outlet, etc.) be sure that the voltage
supply is the same as that specified on the nameplate of the tool. A power source with a
voltage greater than that specified for the tool can result in serious injury to the user, as
well as damaged to the tool. If In doubt, do not plug into tools. Using a power source
with a voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor. Always remove
the plug from the mains socket before making any adjustments or maintenance,
including changing the blades.

WARNING!
• When an extension cable is required, you must ensure that it has the right ampere rating for
your power tools and is in safe electrical condition.
• Ensure that you have removed foreign objects such as nails and screws front the work before
commencing.
• Rags, cloths, cord, string and the like should never be left around the work area.
• Damaged or contaminated work pieces may cause to hazards. Metal parts and splintery work
pieces penetrated into the workpiece can be very dangerous.
• Use safety equipment including safety goggles or shield, ear protection, dust mask and
protective clothing including safety gloves.
• Check to make sure that all fixing screws are tight before operating the tool.
• Ensure that the dust extractor is in place before commencing operating.
• Do not force the workpiece through the machine. Let the machine apply the
correct automatic fee rate.

• Keep the feed rollers free of wood chips and sawdust. If the movement becomes clogged,
kickback can occur.
• To ensure safe operation, inspect the feed speed spindles whenever you think it's necessary.
• The machine is designed for the planing of wood only. Never to cut recesses, tenons or
moulds.
• Do not use the machine for planing wood with numerous knots or loose knots.
• Do not stand directly in front of the machine during operation, stand to one side.
• Check that the blades are fitted correctly before commencing operation.
• Take care when handling blades and the cutter head. Wear work gloves. The blades are sharp
and can easily cut bare hands.
• Allow the machine to reach full speed before feeding in a workpiece.
• Check that the cutters are securely fastened.
• Check the amount of cut on the blade before feeding in a workpiece.
• Check that the cutters are securely fastened.
• Check the amount of cut on the blade before using the machine.
• Never attempt a heavy cut in short stock.
• Avoid cutting across the grain.
• Missing push-stick may lead to hazards. Use the push stick or push pads that keep your hand
well away from the blades, particularly for shorter stick planing. Do not attempt to feed
workpieces that are shorter than the minimum length specified in the technical data of the tool.
Put the push stick back to the hooks on the side housing when not in use.
• Advance the material to the cutting head for normal operation by sliding it along the table,
never by placing it directly on the cutting head.
• Never leave the machine set to a heavy cut, but reduce it to a minimum cut.
• Use cutting blades designed for this machine only.
• Rectify the faults including guards and cutter block immediately as soon as they are
discovered.

Initial Assembly...
1. Fittting the Guide Fence
• Place the guide fence assembly (8) on the top of the right side plate. Be sure the two holes of
the guide fence assembly are aligned with the two pre-drilled holes in the table plate. (See Fig
1& 2)
• Secure the guide fence assembly (8) onto the planing table by using the two hex head screws
provided. (See Fig 1 & 2)
There is very little to do in the way of ‘initial assembly’. Just fit the guide fence and
cutter block mounting arm guard as described below:

2. Fitting the Cutter Block Mounting Arm Guard
• Offer up the cutter block mounting arm guard (3) to the left side of the fixed infeed table. Line
up the two holes in the mounting arm (3) with the pin and thread stem in the fixed infeed table.
(See fig 3)
• Clamp the cutter block mounting arm guard in place with the mounting arm clamping knob (2).

IMPORTANT: The planer-thicknesser MB9020 is intended specially for planing
operations on solid timber, using high-alloyed (HL) knives. When being thicknessed, the contact
surface of the work piece must be flat. In case bigger or heavier workpieces should be worked it
is necessary to clamp the machine firmly to its supporting bench or table (e.g. with screw
clamps). The machine is not suitable for operation outdoors. Any other use beyond this scope is
considered as failing to comply with the intended purpose. Axminster Power Tools is not liable
for any damage or injuries caused as a result of this; the risk is borne solely by the user.
The NVR switch (7) of machine is located on the left side below the yellow folder cover. To
switch on the machine: Press green button “I”. To switch off the machine: Press red button “O”.
The switch can be locked to prevent the machine from being inadvertently switched on by
folding down the yellow cover. (See fig 5)
This machine is equipped with overload switch (6a) for motor running protection. Once the
overload occurs, the machine will stop automatically. After a while, the overload switch can be
reset. (See fig 6)
Adjustment:
Rotate the infeed adjusting knob (11) to adjust the table height to obtain the desired cutting
depth shown on the cutting depth scale(14). (See figs 7 & 8) Turn the lift and shift handle (13) to
set the guide fence (8) at a desired angle shown on the angle scale (8a & 8b).

CAUTION: When the planer thicknesser is not in use make sure cutterblock guard (9) is
covering the cutterblock to advoid injury, as the KNIVES ARE VERY SHARP!

Fit the dust extraction system:
1) Place the rise & full handle (6) onto the pillar on the left side of the fixed table, and then rotate
it counter-clockwise to adjust the thicknessing table to its lowest position. (See fig 9)
2) Place the dust extraction port moulding (15) on the thicknessing table. Ensure that the three
pins to the underside of the dust extraction port(15) are positioned into the three holes in the
thicknessing table. (See figs 10 & 11)
3) Rotate the rise & full handle (6) clockwise to raise
the thicknessing table until the dust extraction port(15)
is firmly clamped and its lug(17) is located onto the
safety interlock switch(4) (See figs 12,13 & 14)
4) Fit the double-ended adaptor (15a) to the dust
extraction port(15). (See fig 15) Fit the dust suction
hose of a dust extractor unit (not supplied) to the
double-ended adaptor. Raise the cutterblock guard (9).

• Insert the mains plug into its socket, then open the NVR switch cover and press the green
button to switch on the machine. Wait until the cutterblock reaches full speed, place the
workpiece onto the infeed adjustable table(10). Use both hands push the workpiece forward
over the cutterblock using the two push blocks (D). Feed the workpiece in the direction as
shown by the arrow, which is labeled on the left side of the table. (See fig 16)
• To turn off machine when completed, by pushing the red button and close the yellow cover
and wait until the machine comes to a complete stop.
• Remove chips and splinters from the cutterblock, fixed and adjustable tables.
• Push back the cutterblock guard (9) back in position, to cover the cutterblock.
Note: Remove the dust extraction system, if you intend to use the thicknessing table.

Adjustment:
• Place the rise & full handle (6) onto the pillar near the left side of the fixed outfeed table, and
then rotate it to set the thickenssing table to a desired height with reference to the thicknessing
scale(19). (See fig 17 & 18)
Fit the dust extraction system:
1) Loosen the cutterblock guard clamping knob (1) pull out the cutterblock (9) to the side as far
as it will go. (See fig 19)
2) Place the dust extraction port moulding (15) on the fixed outfeed table (5). Ensure that its stop
pin and clamping knobs (16) are located respectively into the pre-drilled holes in the fixed
outfeed table (5), and its stop pin is located on the safety Interlock switch (4). (See figs 20,21,22)
3) Rotate the clamping knobs (16) until the dust extraction port (15) is firmly secured.
4) Fit the double-ended adaptor to the dust extraction port(15).
5) Fit the dust suction hose of a dust extractor unit to the double-ended adaptor.

Operating Instructions...
• Insert the mains plug into its socket,
then open the NVR switch cover and
press the green button to switch on the
machine. Wait until the cutterblock
reaches full speed, insert the
workpiece into the left side of the
thicknessing table as shown by the
direction arrow, below the thicknessing
table. Use both hands to hold the
workpiece and ease it into through the
thicknesser. (See fig 23)
• To turn off machine when completed, by pushing the red button and close the yellow cover
and wait until the machine comes to a complete stop.
• Remove chips and splinters from the cutterblock, fixed and adjustable tables.
• Remove the dust extractor moulding form the planning table, if you have finished thicknessing.
• Push back the cutterblock guard (9) back in position, and lower the cutterblock guard to cover
the cutterblock.
DISCONNECT THE PLANER THICKNESSER FROM THE MAINS SUPPLY

CAUTION: Always pull out the mains plug before changing or sharpening the knives. Sharp
planing knives guarantee good planing results and put less strain on the motor. Knives which
have become blunt must be sharpened or replaced. Proceed as follows to change or sharpen
the knives:
• Remove the guide fence (8). Pull out the cutterblock guard (9) to the side as far as it will go.
• Loosen the clamping bolts (20) by turning clockwise with open-ended spanner supplied.
Loosen the clamping bolts to enable the chipbreaker/wedge (22) with knife (21) can be
withdrawn through the opening. Take out the chipbreaker/wedge device and knife.

• Clean all parts and knife slots in the cutterblock.
• Insert the chipbreaker/wedge device with new or sharpened knife and align laterally with the
cutterblock.
• Put the blade setting tool on the top surface of the adjustable infeed table as shown in
fig 24 below. Be sure the face (A) of the blade setting tool is located on the top surface of the
adjustable infeed table, the face (B) to the end face of the infeed table, and the face (C) on the
edge of knife. (See fig 25)
• Press the blade setting tool with one hand, and tighten the clamping bolts (20) by turning
counterclockwise with the 8mm spanner provided. (See fig 26)
• Finally push the cutterblock guard (9) back in position to cover the cutterblock and replace
the guide fence. (See fig 27)

The planer-thicknesser MB9020 is designed with a low maintenance requirement. The bearings
are greased for life. After approximately 10 hours of operation we recommend to lubricate the
following parts: (Note we recommend using "Rocol Dry PTFE part no: 810135").
• Bearings of the feed-in and feed-out rollers.
• Bearings of pulley and gear wheel of the belt. Treat threaded spindles for the height
adjustment of the thicknessing table with dry lubrication only!

Maintenence...
• The table surface and feed-in / feed-out rollers should always be kept clean of resin. Dirty
feed-in rollers and feed-out rollers (24) have to be cleaned In order to prevent the motor from
over heating, (See fig 28) regularly check that no dust has accumulated on the ventilation
apertures of the motor. After a prolonged period of operation, users are recommended to have
the machine checked by an authorized service engineer to see over the job.
The cutter head, clamping devices, knife supports and knives used on the machine must be
freed from resin regularly as a clean tool improves the cutting quality. This can be done by
soaking the clamping devices, knife supports and knives for 24 hours in paraffin, white spirit or
commercially available resin remover.

Troubleshooting...
1. Machine cannot be switched on. Cause:
- No main voltage. Check power supply.
- Carbon brushes worn. Take the machine to your supplier or Distributor.
2. Machine switches itself off when idling. Cause:
- Mains failure (check mains back-up fuse).Renew fuse.
3. Machine stops while planing is in progress. Cause:
- Blunt knives or excessive feed rate. Replace or sharpen knives, or reduce feed rate.
4. Speed drops while planing is in progress. Cause:
- Cutting depth too great. Reduce cutting depth.
- Feed rate too fast. Reduce feed rate.
- Blunt knives. Sharpen or replace knives.
5. Unsatisfactory finish. Cause:
- Blunt knives. Sharpen or replace knives.
- Uneven feed. Plane with constant pressure and reduce feed rate.
- Not connecting to dust extractor unit (not supplied). Connect to it.
6. Chip ejection blocked while planing or thicknessing is in progress. Cause:
- No dust extractor unit. Essential to use a dust extractor unit while using the machine.
- Wood too damp.
7. Uneven feeding rate while thicknessing is in progress. Cause:
- Rubber belt too loose. Check the rubber belt, and change it If necessary.
-Clean the dust from the two springs located on the side cover, where a yellow warning label
marked.
