ApplicationOverview

AXISDigitalAutotrackingisanapplicationthatallowsthecameratodiscoveramovingobject,suchasapersonoravehicle,zoom
inontheobjectandfollowitwithinadenedarea.Autotrackingcontinuesuntilthemovingobjectstopsordisappearsfromthe
denedarea.Theapplicationismostsuitableinenvironmentswheremovementisunusualandcouldindicateunwantedactivity.
AXISDigitalAutotrackingallowsefcient,motion-triggeredmonitoringwhilesavingonbandwidthanddiskspace.

Digitalautotrackingdiffersfrommechanicalautotrackinginthatthecameraviewisadaptedtoincludealldetectedmoving
objects.Mechanicalautotracking,whichisavailableinsomePTZcameras,locksonasingleobjectandfollowsthatobjectuntilthe
objectisoutsidethecamera’srangeofcoverage.

TouseAXISDigitalAutotracking,theapplicationmustrstbeuploadedtotheAxisproductanditmustbestarted.Toavoidtracking
unwantedobjects,theapplicationshouldbecongured.Includeandexcludeareasareusedtodenethepartsofthesceneinwhich
movingobjectsshouldbetracked.Ignorelterscanbeusedtoavoidtrackingobjectssuchasshadowsofswayingtrees,lightsfrom
passingcarsandsmallanimalsregardlessofwhereinthescenetheobjectsappear.

Duringconguration,visualconrmationcanbeusedtohelpunderstandtheeffectofthedifferentlters.Whenvisualconrmation
isenabled,redpolygonsshowwhichobjectstheapplicationtracksandgreenpolygonsshowwhichobjectstheapplicationignores.
Ayellowrectangleshowshowthecameraviewisadaptedtotrackmovingobjects.

Tracking

Totrackobjects,AXISDigitalAutotrackingusesoneofthecamera’sviewareas.Whenamovingobjectisdetected,theviewarea
zoomsinonandfollowstheobject.Whiletracking,theapplicationcontinuestomonitorthecamera’sentireeldofview .Ifa
secondmovingobjectisdetected,theviewareaisadaptedtoincludeallmovingobjects.Trackingcontinuesuntilallobjectshave
stoppedordisappearedfromtheincludearea.

Theviewareausedforautotrackingiscreatedautomaticallywhenopeningtheapplication’swebpageforthersttime.Theviewarea
iscalledDigitalAutotrackingViewandhasaresolutionoptimizedfortheapplicationandthecamera.Ifrequired,theviewarea’s
resolutioncanbechangedorauser-denedviewareacanbeused.TheviewareausedforautotrackingmusthavePTZenabledand
mustusethesameaspectratioastheDigitalAutotrackingView.Theresolutioncannotbelargerthanhalfthecamera’smaximum
resolution.Themaximumzoomlevelisautomaticallyadaptedtotheviewarearesolution.

Theviewareausedforautotrackingisdisplayedintheapplication'swebpagebutcanalsobeaccessedfrom,forexample,the
LiveViewpage.Intheapplication'swebpage,theviewareaistheviewtotheright.Theviewtotheleftistheoverviewimage
showingthecamera'sentireeldofview.

AXISDigitalAutotrackingcanbeusedwhileaguardtourisrunning.Theguardtourwillbestoppedtemporarilywhendigital
autotrackingstartsandwillresumewhenautotrackingstops.Manualpan,tiltandzoomoperations,forexampleusingajoystick
ormouse,haveprecedenceoverautotracking.

TheAxisproductcanbeconguredtoperformactions,forexamplerecordvideoorsendanoticationmessage,whenautotracking
startsorstops.SeeUsingtheApplicationinanActionRuleonpage1 1.

Requirements

AXISDigitalAutotrackingcanbeinstalledinAxisnetworkcamerasthatsupportviewareasandAXISCameraApplicationPlatform.
Theapplicationisintendedforxedcameraswithatleastmegapixelresolution.Acompletelistofcompatibleproductsand
rmwareversionsisavailableatwww.axis.com/applications

Theapplicationdoesnotrequireanylicense.

Forfullfunctionality,InternetExplorerandAXISMediaControl(AMC)arerequiredwhenconguringtheapplication.

Considerations

BeforeusingAXISDigitalAutotracking,takethefollowingintoconsideration:

•Smallanddistantobjectsmightnotbetracked.

•Detectionaccuracymaybeaffectedbyweatherconditionssuchasheavyrainorsnow.

•MakesurethatthelightingconditionsarewithintheAxisproduct’sspecication.Addadditionallightingifneeded.

•Makesurethatthecameraisnotsubjecttoexcessivevibrations.Vibrationsmightcausefalsedetectionsandunwanted
trackedobjects.

3.UnderUploadApplication,clickBrowse,locatetheapplicationleandthenclickUploadPackage.

TocongureAXISDigitalAutotracking,followthesesteps:

1.Modifythesizeandpositionoftheincludearea.Thisistheareainwhichmovingobjectswillbetracked.SeeIncludeArea
onpage7.

2.Optionally,addoneormoreexcludeareas.Objectsinanexcludeareawillbeignored.SeeExcludeAreaonpage7.

3.ClickSavetoapplythechanges.

4.Usevisualconrmationtoverifythesettings.SeeVisualConrmationonpage8.

5.Iftoomanyunwantedobjectsaretracked,enableandcongureoneormoreoftheignorelters.SeeIgnoreFilters

Toresettheincludeareatoitsdefaultsize,clickReset.

ExcludeArea

Anexcludeareaisanareainwhichmovingobjectswillbeignored.Useexcludeareasifthereareareasinsidetheincludearea
thattriggeralotofunwantedtrackedobjects.Upto10excludeareascanbeused.

Toaddandmodifyexcludeareas,InternetExplorerandAXISMediaControl(AMC)mustbeused.

VisualConrmation

Visualconrmationisusedtovalidatethatthesettingsarecorrect,thatis,thatallobjectsthatshouldbetrackedaretracked.

Note

Tousevisualconrmation,InternetExplorerandAXISMediaControl(AMC)mustbeused.

Whenvisualconrmationisenabled,allmovingobjectsfoundbytheapplicationwillbeencircledandfollowedbypolygons.Ared
polygonindicatesthattheobjectisfoundandthattrackinghasstarted.Agreenpolygonindicatesthattheobjectisfoundbutis
ignoredbecauseitisnotintheincludeareaorbecauseofoneoftheignorelters.

Theyellowrectangleshowshowtheviewareafollowsmovingobjectsandhowtheviewareazoomlevelisadaptedtoincludeall
movingobjects.

Toenablevisualconrmation:

1.SelecttheEnablevisualconrmationoption.

2.ClickSave.

IgnoreFilters

IfAXISDigitalAutotrackingtrackstoomanyunwantedobjects,startbymodifyingtheincludeandexcludeareas.Ifstilltoo
manyobjectsaretracked,useoneormoreoftheignorelters.

Supportedignorelters:

•Swayingobjects—Usedtoignoreobjectsthatonlymoveashortdistance

•Short-livedobjects—Usedtoignoreobjectsthatonlyappearintheimageforashortperiodoftime

•Smallobjects—Usedtoignoresmallobjects

Ignoreltersareappliedtoallmovingobjectsfoundbytheapplicationandshouldbeconguredwithcaretoensurethatno
importantobjectsareignored.

Onlyuseignoreltersifneededanduseasfewltersaspossible.Enableandcongureonelteratatimeandusevisualconrmation
toverifythesettingsbeforeenablinganotherlter.Whenconguringalter,startwithasmallltersize,clickSaveandusevisual
conrmationtoverifythesettings.Ifrequired,increasetheltersizeinsmallstepsuntilthenumberofunwantedobjectsisreduced.

SwayingObjectIgnoreFilter

Theswayingobjectlterisusedtoavoidtrackingobjectsthatonlymoveashortdistance,forexamplemovingtrees,agsandtheir
shadows.Usethelterifsuchobjectscausealotofunwantedtrackedobjects.Iftheswayingobjectsinthescenearelarge,for
examplelargepondsorlargetrees,useexcludeareasinsteadofthelter.Thelterwillbeappliedtoallmovingobjectsinsceneand,
ifsettoavaluetoolarge,importantobjectsmightnotbetracked.

Whentheswayingobjectlterisenabledandtheapplicationndsamovingobject,trackingwillnotstart(redpolygoninvisual
conrmation)untiltheobjecthastravelledadistancelargerthanthesetltersize.Ifthealarmsentbytheapplicationisused
tostartarecording,congurethepre-triggertimesothattherecordingalsoincludesthetimetheobjectmovedinthescene
beforetrackingstarted.

Toenablethelter:

1.SelecttheSwayingobjectsoption.

2.Clickonthe

Theltersizecanalsobesetbyenteringavaluebetween10and50intheeld.Thevaluecorrespondstothedistancefromthe
centerofthecrosstooneofthearrowheads.Thevalue50impliesthatanobjectmusttravelfromitsinitialpointtoonesixthofthe
imagewidthorheightbeforebeingtracked.Thevalue25implieshalfthatdistance,thatis,theobjectmusttraveladistanceofone
twelfthoftheimagewidthorheightbeforebeingtracked.

Short-LivedObjectIgnoreFilter

Theshort-livedobjectlterisusedtoavoidtrackingobjectsthatonlyappearforashortperiodoftime,suchaslightbeamsfroma
passingcarandquicklymovingshadows.Usethelterifsuchobjectscausealotofunwantedtrackedobjects.

Whentheshort-livedobjectlterisenabledandtheapplicationndsamovingobject,trackingwillnotstart(redpolygoninvisual
conrmation)untilthesettimeaspassed.Ifthealarmsentbytheapplicationisusedtostartarecording,congurethepre-trigger
timesothattherecordingalsoincludesthetimetheobjectmovedinthescenebeforetrackingstarted.

Toenablethelter:

1.SelecttheShort-livedobjectsoption.

2.Enterthenumberofsecondsintheeld.Thenumberofsecondsistheminimumtimethatmustpassbeforetracking
starts.Startwithasmallnumber.

3.ClickSavetoapplythelter.

4.Usevisualconrmationtoverifythesettings.

5.Iftheresultisnotsatisfactory,increasetheltersizeinsmallsteps.

SmallObjectIgnoreFilter

Thesmallobjectlterisusedtoavoidtrackingobjectsthataretoosmall.Forexample,ifonlymovingcarsshouldbetracked,the
smallobjectltercanbeusedtoavoidtrackingpeopleandanimals.

Ifusingthesmallobjectlter,takeintoconsiderationthatanobjectfarfromthecameraappearssmallerthananobjectclosetothe
camera.Ifthelterissettoignoreobjectsthesizeofaperson,peoplethatareclosetobecameracanstillbetrackedbecause
theyarelargerthantheltersize.

Toenablethelter:

1.SelecttheSmallobjectsoption.

2.Clickonthe

Thelterdisplayedintheimagecanbemovedtomakeiteasiertocomparetheltersizewiththesizeofobjects

canbeused.

Usingactionrules,Axisnetworkcamerascanbeconguredto,forexample,recordvideoorsendanoticationwhen
AXISDigitalAutotrackingstartstrackingamovingobject.

ThefollowingexampleshowshowtoconguretheAxisproducttorecordvideotoanSDcardornetworksharewhen

1.InsertanSDcardintheAxisproduct,orgotoSetup>SystemOptions>StorageintheAxisproduct’swebpagesand
conguretheproducttouseanetworkshare.

2.InstallandcongureAXISDigitalAutotracking.

3.Optionally,gotoSetup>Video&Audio>StreamProlesandcreateastreamproletouseforrecording.

4.GotoSetup>Events>ActionRulesandclickAddtocreateanewactionrule.

5.FromtheTriggerdrop-downlist,selectApplicationsandthenselectDigitalAutoTracking.

6.Congureothersettingsasrequired.Forexample,toonlyrecordvideoduringcertaintimeperiods,selectaSchedule.

7.UnderActions,selectRecordVideofromtheTypedrop-downlist.

8.Torecordtheviewareausedforautotracking,selecttheviewareacalledDigitalAutotrackingView.

9.Selectthestreamproleandstoragedevicetouseandcongurethepre-andpost-triggertimes.

10.MakesurethattheruleisenabledandthenclickOK.

Note

ToappearintheTriggerlist,theapplicationmustbestartedanditsstatusmustbeIdleorRunning.
