Product Overview

AXIS 5570e and AXIS 5670e are high-performing print servers with built-in protocol converters that allow for printing from IBM Mainframe (zSeries) and AS/400 (iSeries) to any type of printer. In addition to supporting Windows LAN Server Manager, UNIX, NetWare and Macintosh, Axis IBM-compatible print servers deliver world-class support for IBM host system printing over TCP/IP and SNA with data streams such as IPDS and SCS.
About this User’s Guide
This User’s Guide is applicable for the AXIS 5570e and AXIS 5670e with firmware version 6.42 or higher, providing introductory information as well as detailed instructions on how to set up and manage the print servers in various network environments.
This User’s Guide is intended for everyone involved in installing and managing the print servers. To fully benefit from this document, you should be familiar with basic networking principles.
These instructions are based on the settings in a new and unconfigured print server. To reload the default parameters, you can perform a Factory Default, which will restore all the settings, except installed certificates. See Using the Test Button, on page 59.
In the AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e User’s Manual you will find a more extensive description of the print servers. The User’s Manual is available on www.axis.com

Automatic IP Address Assignment

If you are working in a Windows network with automatic IP address assignment, your print server will obtain an IP address automatically when you connect it to the network. Follow the instructions on this page to verify the IP address:
1. Open a Web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator).
2. In the Location/Address field, enter the print server’s IP address, found on the test page (see Connecting the Hardware on page 11) and press Enter.
3. If the Network Print Server web page appears in your Web browser, the IP address was set automatically when you connected the AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e to your network.
4. If the Network Print Server web page does not appear, you need to set the print server’s IP address manually using one of the methods described in Manual IP address assignment on page 15.
Notes:
Use a Web browser with JavaScript support and Java enabled.
The AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e supports WINS (Windows Internet Name Service), which is recommended when
setting the IP address using DHCP in Windows environments.
If you are working in a WINS/ DDNS network, you can access the print server’s web pages using its default
host name: In the Location/Address field, enter the default print server name AXISxxxxxx (xxxxxx are the last six digits of the serial number, found on the print server’s underside label). Example: If the serial number is 00 40 8c 18 1c f0, type AXIS181cf0 and press Enter.
DHCP, RARP and BOOTP can be used to set the IP address in UNIX, see the AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e User’s
Manual for details.
See the AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e User’s Manual for installation instructions in a NetBIOS/NetBEUI environ-
ment. The User’s Manual is available on www.axis.com

Manual IP address assignment

To establish communication with the TCP/IP network, an IP Address must be assigned to your AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e. Choose the appropriate method according to your network:
AXIS IP JumpStarter™ software is an easy-to-use Windows application that allows you to
assign an IP address to your print server and find print servers already installed in your network. Refer to Setting the IP address manually using AXIS IP JumpStarter, on page 16
ARP/Ping - use this method to set the IP address for each new print server individually.
This method cannot be used over routers. Refer to Setting the IP address manually using ARP/Ping, on page 17.
AXIS ThinWizard™ software is the primary recommended tool for large organizations.
It can set IP addresses, discover and group print servers, install new firmware and configure multiple Axis products concurrently. Refer to Print Server Management using AXIS ThinWizard, on page 58
Note:
If you are using host names, you can map a unique host name to the IP address. Refer to your system manuals for instructions on how this is performed on your system.

Setting the IP address manually using AXIS IP JumpStarter

Install AXIS IP JumpStarter in order to set the IP address of your print server. It’s available on www.axis.com
1. Select the required server from the serial number list in the IP JumpStarter dialog window.
2. From the Server menu, select Set IP Address.
3. Click the radio button that corresponds to your choice of IP setting method. You must define the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway when assigning a static IP address.
4. Click OK to save your settings.
5. Enter the server root password (by default set to pass), and click OK.
6. The AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e will appear in the list with the assigned IP address.
7. To verify that you have access to the print server’s web pages, highlight the print server in the list and select Server Home Page from the Server menu.
Note:
If your print server does not appear in the serial number list, refer to the AXIS IP JumpStarter online help files or the AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e User’s Manual which is available on www.axis.com
AXIS 5570e and AXIS 5670e User’s Guide 17

Setting the IP address manually using ARP/Ping

Refer to the appropriate section below to assign an IP address to your AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e using arp/ping:
Windows
Open a Command Prompt and enter the following syntax:
Syntax Example
1.
arp -s <Internet address> <Ethernet address>
2.
ping <Internet address>
The host will return reply from 192.168.3.191, or a similar message. This indicates that the address has been set and that communication is established. You are now ready to print.
UNIX, Mac OS X
Open a Terminal and enter the following syntax:
Syntax Example
1.
arp -s <Internet address> <Ethernet address>
2.
ping <Internet address>
The host will return psname is alive, or a similar message. This indicates that the address has been set and that communication is established. You are now ready to print.
arp -s 192.168.3.191 00-40-8c-18-16-36 ping 192.168.3.191
arp -s 192.168.3.191.00:40:8c:18:16:36 ping 192.168.3.191
Important!
You must define the Default Router and Subnet Mask when you set a static IP address. Log in to the print server’s web pages and select Admin | Network Settings | Detailed View | TCP/IP
| Default Router and Subnet Mask. DHCP, Auto-IP, BOOTP and RARP must first be set to No
Notes:
• The AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e supports WINS (Windows Internet Name Service), which is recommended when setting the IP address using DHCP in Windows environments.
Setting the IP address with arp and ping is only possible in the first ten minutes after re-booting
the print server.
When you execute the ping command for the first time, you may experience a significantly longer
response time than usual.
The arp command varies between different UNIX systems.
You need root privileges on your UNIX system in order to execute the arp command and run axin-
stall (refer to the AXIS 5570e/AXIS 5670e User’s Manual for more information).
Some BSD type systems expect the host name and serial number in reverse order. Furthermore IBM
AIX systems will require the additional argument ether. Example: arp -s ether <host name> <Ethernet Address> temp
