CHAPTER
1
Product Overview
The MergePointTM service processor (SP) manager is a secure, centralized enterprise management solution for target devices equipped with IPMI, HP iLO and Dell DRAC service processors. Users can remotely perform server management tasks, including power control and console access, on managed target devices.
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager provides a standardized interface independent of the management protocols used to manage each target device. Management operations can be performed either by using command s or scri pts over a Telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) version 2 session or by using the appliance’s web interface from a standard web browser.
This guide describes how to use the web interface to manage the SP manager. For how to use the command line and scripting management options, see the MergePoint 5200 Command Reference
Guide.
NOTE: Before using the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you must register the SP manager online and obtain and configure license keys. For more information, see
Configuring the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager License Keys
on page 9.
Supported Target Devices
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager can manage target devices with service processors (SPs) that support the following protocols:
IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) 1.5 and 2.0, SoL (Serial over LAN)
Dell DRAC III and IV (Dell Remote Access Card)
Hewlett Packard (HP) iLO (Integrated Lights-Out)
NOTE: The IPMI SP is also referred to as a baseboard management controller (BMC).

Features and Benefits
Platform power management
You can view the power status and perform power up, power down or power reset operations on a managed target device using the MergePoint 5200 SP manager.
Console redirection
With the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you can start and stop a text console redirection session, set the Serial over LAN (SoL) baud rate or review the previous session of console redirection using the SoL history buffer.
Group operations for managed targets
Using the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you can create groups, add targets to multiple groups and apply group operations.
PXE-based initial BMC configuration management
You can remotely configure the BMC of an out-of-the-box target device using the Merg ePoint 5200 SP manager.
Discovery of managed target devices
Using either automatic or manual discovery modes, the MergePoint 5200 SP manager can find supported target devices within a user-specified IP address range. Once a target device is discovered, you can manage the device from the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface.
Access to platform and system information
You can view or modify hardware and operating system information for any target device managed by the MergePoint 5200 SP manager.
System event logs
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager can di splay summary information about the event log or specific events within the log. You may access or clear the log at any time.
User privileges
There are three types of user privileges for the MergePoint 5200 SP manager: Admin, Operator and User. Admin users can access all target devices and perform all management operations in the SP manager. Operator and User users can only access assigned target devices and perform limited operations on the target devices. Admin users may also create user groups. A user group could include Operators and Users and may be assigned target devices to manage.
Alert center
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager alert center receives and displays alerts generated by user-defined events for all managed targets. Platform Event Trap (PET) alerts, a specific format of SNMP trap, are supported. For specific types of events, the user may assign an automatic action for

notification by an email, Microsoft Network (MSN) message, Yahoo! message or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) forward.
System identification LED
NOTE: This feature requires the target device to be equipped with a system identification LED.
With the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you can view the current status of the managed target device’s system identification LED, or turn the LED on or off.
Backup and restore
You can redirect data from the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to the client PC. You can also import backup data from the client PC to the SP manager.
MergePoint 5200 SP Manager Web Interface
As a user-friendly alternative to using the command line, you can use the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface to perform management operations. You can connect to the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface using any of the following web browsers: Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, Firefox 1.0 or later or Mozilla 1.4 or later.
To access the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface:
1. Open a web browser and enter the IP address (http://<appliance IP address>) of the
MergePoint 5200 SP manager. (To set the appliance IP address, see
Using the Serial Port to
Enable Web Interface Access on page 8.)
NOTE: The first time you access the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface, you are prompted to enter a license key. See Configuring the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager License Keys on page 9 for more information.
2. Type your username and password. If you have not changed the defaul t username and
password settings, type
admin as both the username and password.
3. Click Login.
4. The MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface appears. This is the primary user interface for
performing management operations, including controlling the MergePoint 5200 SP manager,
discovering target devices and managing target devices remotely.
NOTE: When following any of the SP manager configuration procedures in this document, start by clicking the name of the SP manager in the side navigation bar. Click Apply Changes to save changes. To cancel changes, click Back to return to the previous screen or click another navigation element, such as the name of a tab, window or target.
Figure 1.1 shows an example of a MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface window, and Table
1.1 describes the window areas.

Number Window Area Descriptions
1 Top Option Bar Use the top option bar to log out or access online help. If any alerts occur, a
yellow icon is displayed. The name of the logged in user appears on the left side of the top option bar.
2 Side Navigation Bar Use the side navigation bar to select the appliance or target devices and
access or edit corresponding information in the content area. The root of the tree is labeled MergePoint 5200 by default, which represents the appliance.
3 Tab Bar Use the tab bar to display and manage the MergePoint 5200 SP manager
and managed groups and target devices.
4 Top Navigation Bar The selections in the top navigation bar vary, depending on the active tab in
the tab bar.
5 Content Area The content area displays information relative to your selections and allows
you to make changes to the SP manager, managed groups or target
devices.

Installation and Setup
This chapter describes how to install and set up the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager. Before using the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you must activate the serial number online.
NOTE: The first time you access the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface, enter admin as the username and admin as the password. The admin account is authorized to perform all configuration and access all managed devices and cannot be removed or renamed. To protect the security of the SP managerand target devices, it is essential to change the default password for the admin account as described under
To edit an
appliance user (for Admin users only): on page 27.
Safety Precautions
To avoid potentially fatal shock hazard and possible damage to equipment, please observe the following precautions:
Do not use a 2-wire power cord in any Avocent product configuration.
Test AC outlets at the target device and monitor for proper polarity and grounding.
Use only with grounded outlets.
NOTE: The AC inlet is the main power disconnect.
Rack Mount Safety Considerations
Elevated Ambient Temperature: If installed in a closed rack assembly, the operating
temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Use care not to exceed
the rated maximum ambient temperature of the switch.
Reduced Air Flow: Installation of the equipment in a rack should be such that the amount of
airflow required for safe operation of the equipment is not compromised.
Mechanical Loading: Mounting of the equipment in the rack should be such that a hazardous
condition is not achieved due to uneven mechanical loading.
Circuit Overloading: Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the
supply circuit and the effect that overloading of circuits might have on overcurrent protection
and supply wiring. Consider equipment nameplate ratings for maximum current.

Reliable Earthing: Reliable earthing of rack mounted equipment should be maintained. Pay
particular attention to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit
(for example, use of power strips).
Cabling Installation, Maintenance and Safety Tips
The following is a list of important safety considerations that should be reviewed prior to installing or maintaining your cables:
Keep all CAT 5 runs to a maximum of 10 meters each.
Maintain the twists of the pairs all the way to the point of termination, or no more that one-half
inch untwisted. Do not skin off more than one inch of jacket while terminating.
If bending the cable is necessary, make it gradual with no bend sharper than a one inch radius.
Allowing the cable to be sharply bent or kinked can permanently damage the cable’s interior.
Dress the cables neatly with cable ties, using low to moderate pressure. Do not over
tighten
ties.
Cross-connect cables where necessary, using rated punch blocks, patch panels and
components. Do not splice or bridge cable at any point.
Keep CAT 5 cable as far away as possible from potential sources of EMI, such as electrical
cables, transformers and light fixtures. Do not tie cables to electrical conduits or lay cables on
electrical fixtures.
Always test every installed segment with a cable tester. “Toning” alone is not an
acceptable
test.
Always install jacks so as to prevent dust and other contaminants from settling on the contacts.
The contacts of the jack should face up on the flush mounted plates, or left/right/down on
surface mount boxes.
Always leave extra slack on the cables, neatly coiled in the ceiling or nearest concealed
location. Leave at least five feet at the work outlet side and 10 feet at the patch panel side.
Choose either 568A or 568B wiring standard before beginning. Wire all jacks and patch panels
for the same wiring scheme. Don’t mix 568A and 568B wiring in the same installation.
Always obey all local and national fire and building codes. Be sure to firestop all cables that
penetrate a firewall. Use plenum rated cable where it is required.
MergePoint 5200 SP Manager Configuration
A typical MergePoint 5200 SP manager configuration, as illustrated in Figure 2.1, includes the appliance and the target devices connected to the local area network (LAN). A terminal or a workstation running a terminal emulation program is connected to the serial port for configuring basic network settings. The MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface is then used to finish configuration of the SP manager, target devices and users.

Installing the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager
NOTE: The MergePoint 5200 SP manager may be rack mounted in a 1U configuration. The SP manager does
not support a 0U configuration.
To connect and power up the MergePoint 5200 SP manager:
1. Place the MergePoint 5200 SP manager at the top of the server rack.
2. Attach a CAT 5 cable to one of the Ethernet ports on the back panel of the SP manager and
connect the SP manager to the LAN. Any target devices to be managed by the SP manager
must be connected to the same LAN.
3. Attach one end of the supplied power cord into the back panel of the SP manager and attach the
other end to an appropriate AC power source.
4. Power up the SP manager.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to your equipment:
- Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature .
- Plug the power cord into a grounded (earthed) outlet that is easily accessible at all times.
- Disconnect the power from the target device by unplugging the power cord from either the electrical outlet
or the target device.
Using the Serial Port to Enable Web Interface Access
Perform the following procedure to configure the IP address, which is needed for accessing the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface.
To configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager IP address:
1. Connect a terminal or a workstation that is running a terminal emulation program to the serial
port on the back panel of the SP manager.
2. Start a session with the following port settings:
Serial speed: 9600 bps
Data length: 8 data bits
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: None
Once a connection is established, a menu appears.
3. Type 2.
4. Type 1 to configure any of the following netwo rk sett ings:
Set eth speed
Choose using DHCP or defining an IP address

Type subnet mask
Type gateway IP address
Select default gateway
Define primary DNS and secondary DNS
5. Configure any other settings as desired.
a. To reset all config urat ion parameters to the default values, type 5 (Reboot) and press Ctrl
+
Z when prompted to enter the next menu.
b. To restore default configuration parameters, type 1 (Restore Factory Default).
c. To restart the SP manager using a previous firmware version, type 7 (Roll back
the
version).
6. Type 0 to exit.
Configuring the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager License Keys
You need to register your MergePoint 5200 SP manager online at www.avocent.com to ob tain a master license key. The master key must be configured before you can discover and manage any target devices. The license included with your purchase of the SP manager allows you to discover and manage up to 64 target devices.
A license key is made up of a master key and a slave key. The master key is used to activate the SP manager and its slave keys specify the number of managed target devices that are supported by the
license.
You may purchase upgrade licenses to add support for management of additional target devices up to a maximum of 256. Upgrade licenses can be purchased to add capability for either 64 or 128 target devices. If you purchase one or more upgrade licenses, perform the procedures to configure the SP manager with the master key and slave key(s) for the new license key(s).
To activate the MergePoint 5200 SP manager license:
1. Locate the registration card included in the MergePoint 5200 SP manager shipping box.
Follow the instructions on the registration card to activate the appliance serial number online.
Once you complete the registration, you will be given a master license key.
2. Open a web browser and enter the IP address (http://<appliance IP address>) of
the
appliance.
3. The MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface window appears. Type the master key in the
fields provided and click Add. This license allows you to discover and manage up to 64
target
devices.
4. The User Login window appears. Type admin as the username and type admin as the
password. Change the admin password as described under
To add an appliance user (for
Admin users only): on page 27.

To add a master key:
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Licenses. The License window appears.
3. Click Add Master Key. The Add-On License Key window appears.
4. Type the master key.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To add a slave key:
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Licenses. The License window appears.
3. Click Add Master Key. The Add-On License Key window appears.
4. Type the slave key into the window.
5. Click Apply Changes.
Setting Up the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager
To set up the MergePoint 5200 SP manager:
1. (Optional) Set the BMC provisioning range of the MergePoint 5200 SP manager. [See BMC
Provisioning (IPMI Targets Only) on page 11.]
2. (Optional) Activate alert actions as desired. (See Using the Alerts Viewer on page 28.)
3. Discover new target devices. (See Viewing the Assigned Target Devices on page 13.)
4. Configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager settings. (See Configuring the MergePoint 5200
SP Manager on page 20.)

Using the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager
This chapter describes how a user discovers target devices, controls the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager, configures system settings and views management information.
To perform any of the operations in this chapter, access the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface (see
MergePoint 5200 SP Manager Web Interface on page 3 for more information). In the side navigation bar, click the name of the MergePoint 5200 SP manager. The default display name is MergePoint 5200, but you may change the display name by changing the SP manager alias. See Changing MergePoint 5200 SP manager network settings on page 22 for more in for mation.
When the MergePoint 5200 SP manager is selected in the side navigation bar, the following tabs are
available:
Targets: Use this tab to display and manage discovered target devices
System: Use this tab to configure MergePoint 5200 SP manager settings
Users: Use this tab to manage MergePoint 5200 SP manager user accounts
Alerts: Use this tab to view, query and activate system alerts
Accounting Log: Use this tab to view all MergePoint 5200 SP manager operations
Provisioning: Use this tab to configure and view the status of the BMC
BMC Provisioning (IPMI Targets Only)
NOTE: Automatic provisioning is an optional feature that is only available for target devices that have IPMI
BMCs. You may choose to manually provision the BMC instead of using automatic BMC provisioning.
You can configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to automatically provision the IPMI BMC of a specified target device.
You should make sure the BMC is provisioned before discovering any target devices. Once the BMC is provisioned and a target device is added to the Managed Targets list, the MergePoint 5200 SP manager assigns an IP address from the specified range and configures a user account on the BMC with the specified username and password.

To set the BMC provisioning parameters (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Provisioning tab.
2. In the Provisioning window, specify the following Preboot Execution Environment (PXE)
parameters for a BMC that will be initialized and managed by the SP manager: a. In the Start IP and End IP fields, type an IP address to define the range of optional OOB
IP
addresses. b. In the Subnet mask field, type the subnet mask. c. In the Gateway field, type the gateway IP address. d. In the Username field, type the initial username. e. In the Password field, type the initial password.
3. Click Apply Changes. Once you have provisioned the BMC, you may turn on any target device with an IPMI BMC that is
connected to the same LAN as the SP manager. The target device is automatically initialized with the specified provisioning parameters.
Starting or stopping the BMC provisioning service
You may start or stop the BMC provisioning service by clicking a button in the Provisioning window. If the service status is Running, a Stop button is available; if the service status is Stopped, a Start button is available.
If the Stop button is clicked, the BMC provisioning service stops and the MergePoint 5200 SP manager no longer accepts PXE boot requests from target devices on the LAN. However, previously provisioned target devices that have IPMI BMCs can still be discovered.
To stop or start the BMC provisioning service (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Provisioning tab.
2. In the Provisioning window, click Stop or Start as appropriate.
BMC log
Once BMC provisioning starts, an activity log is displayed in the Provisioning window. A status of Confirmed or Unconfirmed is displayed for each target device in the specified IP address range. A status of Confirmed in the State column indicates that the BMC provisioning for that target device is complete and the target device can now be discovered by the MergePoint 5200 SP manager.
To clear the provisioning log (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Provisioning tab.
2. In the Provisioning window, click Clear All.

Viewing the Assigned Target Devices
You may view the information of the target devices assigned to you.
To view the assigned target devices (for Operator and User users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Targets. The Targets window appears. A list of the devices assigned to you appears.
NOTE: This step is not applicable for Admin users because they will see a list of all managed target devices.
Discovering and Adding Target Devices
You can configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface to discover target devices that reside on the same LAN as the appliance by specifying one or more IP address ranges either for automatic or manual discovery. Discovered target devices are displayed in the Unmanaged Targets list, where you can select them for adding to the Managed Targets list. You can also manually add a target device if you know its IP address.
Before discovering or adding a target device that has an IPMI BMC, you need to make sure the BMC is provisioned [to use automatic provisioning, see
BMC Provisioning (IPMI Targets Only) on
page 11]. You may designate up to two IP address ranges for discovery. The first time you access the Targets
window, the IP address ranges are blank and may be modified by clicking Edit.
Automatically discovering target devices
To automatically discover target devices (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab. The Targets window appears.
2. Select Discovery Setting. The Discovery Setting area appears and displays the current IP address ranges designated for discovery.
3. Click Edit next to the IP address range you wish to modify.
4. The Subnet Edit window appears. The IP addresses available to the MergePoint 5200 SP manager are displayed.
5. In the Subnet Edit window, complete the following steps: a. In the From and To fields, type an IP address to define the range of IP addresses that will
be searched during discovery.
b. Select Automatic as the start mode.
6. Click Apply Changes. The MergePoint 5200 SP manager will automatically search for target devices in the specified IP address range every 15
minutes. If you wish to repeat the discovery

sooner, click the Start link nex t to the IP address ran ge. Discovery result s will be disp layed in the Unmanaged Targets list in the Target Devices window.
Manually discovering target devices
To manually discover target devices (for admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab. The Targets window appears.
2. Select Discovery Setting. The Discovery Setting area will appear and display a list of the current IP address ranges designated for discovery.
3. Click Edit next to the IP address range you wish to modify.
4. The Subnet Edit window appears. The IP addresses of the MergePoint 5200 SP manager are
displayed.
5. In the Subnet Edit window, complete the following steps: a. In the From and To fields, type an IP address to define the range of IP addresses to be
searched during discovery.
b. Select Manual as the start mode.
6. Click Apply Changes. You are returned to the Target window.
7. To begin manual discovery, click Start in the Operation column next to the IP address range you wish to discover. The SP manager will search for target devices in the specified IP address range one time. Discovery results are displayed in the Unmanaged Targets list in the Targets
window.
Manually adding a single target device
If you already know the IP address of a target device, you may add it manually.
To manually add a target device (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Target Devices tab. The Target Device window appears.
2. Click Manually Add Target.
3. In the Input Target Information window, specify the following information: a. In the IP field, type the OOB IP address of the new target device. b. In the Alias field, type the alias for the new target device. c. If you wish to use the default username and password to connect to the new target device,
select Use default user and password. See
Managing Default Users on page 19 for
more information.
-or­In the Username field, type the username required to access the new target device. In the Password field, type the password required to access the new target device.
d. In the KG field, type the BMC key (if applicable).

NOTE: A BMC key is required by IPMI 2.0 and RMCP+ (Remote Mail Checking Protocol).
e. From the Group Name drop-down menu, select a group for the new target device. The
target device is listed in the group folder in the side navigation bar.
4. Click Apply Changes. Discovery results are displayed in the Managed Targets list in the Targets
window.
Modifying Target Device Display Properties
Discovered target devices are displayed in the Unmanaged Targets list, while manually added target devices are displayed in the Managed Targets list. You may add a target device to the Managed Targets list at any time.
If the managed target is part of a group or groups, it is displayed in the side navigation bar as part of the group folder(s). For more information about target device groups, see
Managing Target Device
Groups on page 16.
Adding an unmanaged target device to the Managed Targets list
To add a target device to the Managed Targets list (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab. The Targets window appears.
2. In the Unmanaged Targets list, select the target device you wish to add.
3. Click Manage.
4. In the Input Target Information window, specify the following information: a. If you wish to use the default username and password to connect to the new target device,
select Use default user and password.
-or­In the Username field, type the username required to access the new target device. In the Password field, type the password required to access the new target device.
b. (Optional) Select Group Name. From the Group Name drop-do wn menu, select a group
for the new target device. The target device appears in the group folder in the side navigation bar. For more information about groups, see
Managing Target Device Groups
on page 16.
5. Click Apply Changes. The target device appears in the Managed Targets list.
Deleting a target device from the Managed Targets list
To delete a target device from the Managed Targets list (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab. The Targets window appears.
2. In the Managed Targets list, select the target device you wish to delete.
3. Click Delete.

4. When prompted, confirm the action. The target device is removed from the Managed Targets list and the side navigation bar.
Performing target device operations
You may perform the following actions for all selected managed devices at the same time: turn on, turn off or reset the devices.
To turn on, turn off or reset all selected target devices (for Admin and Operator users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the side navigation bar, click Targets. The Targets window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the target device(s) you wish to modify.
4. Complete one of the following steps: a. To turn on the target devices, click Power On. b. To turn off the target devices, click Power Off. c. To reset power on the target devices, click Power Reset.
5. Confirm the action when prompted. A Power Result message appears.
Managing Target Device Groups
You may create groups for managed target devices so you can perform operations on all devices in a group at the same time. You may create an unlimited number of groups, and the same target device may be a part of multiple groups.
A default target device group with the same name as the MergePoint 5200 SP manager alias is automatically created for you. In the side navigation bar, the appliance, the target devices and target devices group are displayed in the explorer tree according to hierarchy. Group folders and target devices that are part of the appliance alias group are displayed one level below the SP manager. Target devices that are members of groups are displayed one level below the corresponding group
folder.
For more information about changing the MergePoint 5200 SP manager alias and default group name, see
Changing MergePoint 5200 SP manager network settings on page 22.
To add a new target device group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group Management window appears.
3. Click Add. The Add Group window appears.
4. In the Group Name field, type a name for the group.
5. Click Apply Changes. The new group appears in the Group list.

To modify a target device group name (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group Management window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group you wish to modify.
4. Click Modify Name. The Edit Group window appears.
5. In the Group Name field, type a name for the group.
6. Click Apply Changes.
To add a managed target device to a device group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab. The Targets window appears.
2. In the Managed Targets list, select the target device you wish to add to a group.
3. Click Add Targets to Group.
4. From the Group Name drop-down menu, select the group to which you wish to add the target
device.
5. Click Apply Changes. The target device is added to the group and appears in the group folder in the side navigation
bar.
NOTE: You may also select a target device in the side navigation bar and copy or move the target device to a group. For more information see Adding a target device to a group on page 34.
To delete a device group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group Management window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group you wish to delete.
4. Click Delete.
5. When prompted, confirm the action. The grou p is removed from the si de navigation bar and the group list.
Performing target device group operations
You may perform the following for all target devices in a group at the same time: turn on, turn off or reset the devices, turn the target devices’ LED indicators on or off and configure time, PET alert settings and a user and password.
NOTE: You cannot perform device group operations until you add target devices to a device group.
To turn on, turn off or reset all target devices in a group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group(s) you wish to modify.

4. Complete one of the following steps: a. To turn on the target devices, click Power On. b. To turn off the target devices, click Power Off. c. To reset power on the target devices, click Power Reset.

To turn LED indicators on or off for all target devices in a group (for Admin users
only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group(s) you wish to modify.
4. To turn on the LED indicators of the target devices, click Indicator On.
-or­To turn off the LED indicators of the target devices, click Indicator Off.
5. Confirm the action when prompted. An Indicator Result message appears.
To set the time for all target devices in a group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group(s) you wish to modify.
4. Click Set Time. The Set Time window appears.
5. To synchronize the target devices with the SP manager time clock, select Sync with Appliance.
-or­To synchronize the target devices with the client PC time clock, select Sync with Console.
-or­To specify the time, select Other and select the time from the pop-up calendar.
6. Click Apply Changes. A Set Time Result message appears.
To change the PET alert settings for all target devices in a group (for Admin users
only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group(s) you wish to modify.
4. Click PET Setting. The PET Setting window appears. Perform any of the following steps: a. Enable or disable BMC Send Alerts. Enabling this function allows the BMC to send alerts
when events occur.
b. In the Community String field, type the value that will be displayed in the PET trap
community string field.

c. In the Alert Destination IP Address fields, type up to four IP addresses.
NOTE: To allow the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to receive alerts for the target device, one field should contain the IP address for the managed target device.
5. Click Apply Changes. A PET Settings Result message appears.
To set a user and password for all target devices in a group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Group. The Group window appears.
3. In the Group list, select the group(s) you wish to modify.
4. Click Set User and Password. The Input Username and Password window appears.
5. In the Username field, type a username.
6. In the Password field, type a password.
7. Click Apply Changes.
Managing Default Users
A username and password are required when accessing target devices. To simplify user configuration, you may configure a default username and password and assign it to be used when accessing specific target devices.
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager searches the entire list until it finds if a default username is specified for the target device being accessed. You may create multiple entries of the same username with a different password for each. A default user with a blank username and password is created by default. The maximum number of default users is five.
NOTE: Setting a default target device user is not supported on target devices with iLO.
To add a default user (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Default Target User. The Default Target User window appears.
3. Click Add.
4. In the Default User Configuration window, specify the following information for the default target device user:
a. In the Username field, type the username. b. In the Password field, type the password.
5. Click Apply Changes. The new user will be displayed in the default target user list.
To delete a default user (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Targets tab.

2. In the top navigation bar, click Default Target User. The Default Target User window appears.
3. Select the user you wish to delete.
4. Click Delete. The user is removed from the default target user list.

3. Click Edit next to the user you wish to modify.
4. In the Default User Configuration window, modify any of the following information for the default target device user:
a. In the Username field, type a new username. b. In the Password field, type a new password.
5. Click Apply Changes.
Configuring the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager
Configuration under System - Setting
You can use the System tab in the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager to do the following tasks under the Setting tab:
Change the appliance name (alias)
Configure groups of target devices for performing power management
Reboot
To change the MergePoint 5200 SP manager alias (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Setting. The Appliance Setting window appears.
3. In the Alias field, type the new name for the MergePoint 5200 SP manager.
4. Click Apply Changes. The name of the SP manager is changed in the side navigation bar. The name of the default device group is also changed.
To configure device group actions (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Setting. The Appliance Setting window appears.
3. Type the number of target devices to turn on simultaneously in a group.
4. Type the time interval in seconds to elapse between turning on each target device in a series of grouped target devices.
5. Type the number of target devices to turn off simultaneously in a group.

7. Click Apply Changes.
To reboot the MergePoint 5200 SP manager (for Admin users only):

Configuration under System - Advanced Setting
Under the System - Advanced Setting tab, you can perform the following tasks:
Configure the session time interval
Configure the size of file used to save the SoL history
Configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager time and time zone or specify a time server
Unbind the appliance from the DSView® 3 server if it is currently managed by the DSView
3 server
To set the session time interval (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Advanced Setting. The Appliance Advanced Setting window
appears.
3. Enter the session time interval in the Session Time Interval field.
4. Click Apply Changes.
To set SoL history size (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Advanced Setting. The Appliance Advanced Setting window
appears.
3. Enter the size for the history buffer file in megabytes in the SoL history size field.
4. Click Apply Changes.
To configure the MergePoint 5200 appliance time (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Advanced Setting. The Appliance Advanced Setting window
appears.
3. To synchronize the MergePoint 5200 SP manager time with the client PC time clock, select Sync with Client PC.
-or­To set the time manually, click the Other field, and select the time from the pop-up calendar.

To unbind the MergePoint 5200 SP manager from the DSView 3 server (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Advanced Setting. The Appliance Advanced Setting window
appears.
3. Click Unbind from DSView 3 Server. After clicking that button, you are prompted to confirm your action. If you do confirm, you are required to close the appliance window and re-login to the appliance.
Changing MergePoint 5200 SP manager network settings
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager has two Ethernet ports (eth0 and eth1), which are labeled LAN1 and LAN2. In the Network window, you can set IP addresses for the Ethernet ports and configure a DNS server.
A primary and a secondary DNS server may be configured to allow the use of target device names instead of IP addresses. For example, if you enable DNS and if you configure a Syslog server under the Syslog tab, you can enter the DNS name for the server instead of its IP address.
To set the MergePoint 5200 SP manager IP address (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Network. The Appliance Network Setting window appears.
3. In the eth0 and eth1 areas, specify the following information: a. In the IP Address field, type the IP address. b. In the Subnet Mask field, type the subnet mask. c. In the Gateway field, type the gateway IP address.
4. In the Default Gateway area, select eth0 or eth1.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To configure DNS (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Network. The Appliance Network Setting window appears.
3. In the DNS Server Address area, specify the following information: a. In the Primary DNS field, type the IP address of the primary DNS server.

b. (Optional) In the Secondary DNS field, type the IP address of the secondary DNS server.
4. Click Apply Changes.
Managing MergePoint 5200 SP manager sessions
You may view or delete all current MergePoint 5200 SP manager sessions.
To view a session (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Session. The Session window appears.
3. The Session List displays all current sessions and the corresponding session ID, username, source IP, session start time, last visit time of the source IP and access channel. Your session is displayed in green text.
To delete a session (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Session. The Session window appears.
3. Select the session you wish to delete.
4. Click Delete. The session will be forced to close.
License information
License keys are required for the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to operate, and they control the number of target devices that the SP manager is allowed to manage. For more details, see Configuring the MergePoint 5200 SP Manager License Keys on page 9. For how to add a master key, see To add a master key: on page 10; for how to add a slave key, see To add a slave key: on page 10.
To view license information (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Licenses. The License window displays a license summary and list of license keys and descriptions.
Upgrading firmware on the MergePoint 5200 SP manager
Visit www.avocent.com to download and save the latest MergePoint 5200 SP manager upgrade firmware files onto your workstation.
To upgrade firmware on the MergePoint 5200 SP manager (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Upgrade. The Upgrade Appliance Firmware window appears.
3. In the Filename field, type the path to the firmware file or click Browse to locate the file.

4. Click Upgrade to start the upgrade process.
NOTE: If the upgrade fails, you may use the serial port to restore the SP manager to the previous firmware version. For more information see Using the Serial Port to Enable Web Interface Access on page 8.
Importing and exporting data
This function allows you to backup the MergePoint 5200 SP manager by exporting the data to the client PC or a storage location on the network. You may also restore this data to the SP manager.
To export data from the MergePoint 5200 SP manager (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Import/Export. The Import/Export window appears.
3. Click Export. All MergePoint 5200 SP manager data will be compiled and a download link will appear next to the Export button.
4. Click download to save the data file to the desired location.
To import data to the MergePoint 5200 SP manager (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Import/Export. The Import/Export window appears.
3. In the Filename field, type the path to the file you wish to import or click Browse to select the file from the explorer window.
4. Click Import to restore the data in the file to the SP manager.
Redirecting MergePoint 5200 SP manager system log
You may redirect the MergePoint 5200 SP manager system log to a Syslog server or to a network storage location. This allows you to access the system log any time without using the SP manager.
To export the MergePoint 5200 SP manager system log (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Syslog. The Syslog Export Setting window appears.
3. In the Redirect to field, type the IP address of the destination server.
4. Click Apply Changes to redirect the system log to the new IP address.
Configuring NFS storage of SoL history data
SoL history information is automatically saved to the MergePoint 5200 SP manager. To free memory space on the SP manager, you may configure the SoL history data to be saved to a directory exported from an NFS server.
To configure NFS storage of SoL history data (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.

2. In the top navigation bar, click NFS. The NFS window appears.
3. Select Enable and specify the following information: a. In the Server IP field, type the IP address of the NFS server. b. In the Mount Directory field, type the directory pathname exported from the NFS server. c. From the Proto col drop-down menu, select the mount protocol.
4. Click Apply Changes.
Scheduling tasks
You may schedule tasks to simultaneously turn on or off or reset the power on all target devices in a
group.
The results of each scheduled task display in the Schedule Task Result list in the Schedule Task window. To clear this list, click Clear All.
To schedule a task (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Schedules. The Schedule Task window appears.
3. Click Add.
4. Select Group to display all device groups or select Nodes to display all target devices.
5. Specify the following information: a. Select the group(s) or node(s) for which you wish to schedule tasks. b. Type the task name into the Task Name field. c. From the Operate drop-down menu, select: Power On, Power Off or Power Reset. d. From the Schedule Task drop-down menu, select: Once, Daily, Weekly or Monthly. e. From the Time menu(s), select the day, hour and minute for the task to occur. Options in
the Time menus vary according to your selections.
f. If you selected Daily, select the time of the day for the task to occur.
-or­If you selected Weekly, select the day of the week and the time of day for the task to occur.
-or­If you selected Monthly, select the day of the month and the time of day for the task to
occur.
6. Click Apply Changes.
To edit a scheduled task (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Schedule. The Schedule Task window appears.
3. Click Edit next to the task you wish to edit.
4. Modify any of the following information:

a. Sel ect the group(s) or target(s) for which you wish to schedule tasks. b. From the Operate drop-down menu, select: Power On, Power Off or Power Reset. c. the Time menus vary according to your selections.
e. If you selected Daily, select the time of the day for the task to occur.
-or­If you selected Weekly, select the day of the week and the time of day for the task to occur.
-or­If you selected Monthly, select the day of the month and the time of day for the task to
occur.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To delete a scheduled task (for Admin users only):
1. Click the System tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Schedule. The Schedule Task window appears.
3. Select the task to delete.
4. Click Delete.
5. When prompted, confirm the action. The scheduled task will be deleted from the Schedule Task window.
Managing MergePoint 5200 SP Manager User Accounts
You may create, modify and delete MergePoint 5200 SP manager user accounts. An account with the username of
admin and the password of admin is configured and cannot be deleted.
An Administrator account user is allowed to be deleted if it is not the only Administrator account user in the SP manager. Each SP manager should have at least one Administrator account user.
Do not use reserved words for usernames. Reserved words that have special meaning for the SP manager are listed under
Reserved Words on page 59.
You specify a privilege of Admin, Operator or User for each account. The Admin privilege gives the user full control over all settings and the ability to perform any SP manager operations, as well as manage all of the target devices in the SP manager. An Operator privilege allows the user to perform basic operations, modify a limited number of settings and manage assigned target devices. A User privilege allows the user to view and query information of assigned target devices but prevents the user from performing most operations and modifying most settin gs. For detailed information about user privileges, see
User Privileges on page 49.
You are also allowed to manage users in groups. You can create, edit and delete groups. You can also select users and target devices for the group. After a user is added to a group, that user can

manage all target devices assigned to it individually, as well as all the target devices assigned to any groups to which the user belongs.
To add an appliance user (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The User Configuration window appears.
3. Click Add.
4. Specify the following information for the new user: a. In the User Name field, type the username. b. In the Password field, type the password. c. From the Privilege drop-down menu, select the privileges you wish to assign to the user:
Admin, Operator or User.
d. For Operator or User privilege users, select the target devices which can be managed by
the user. For Admin privilege users, skip this step.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To edit an appliance user (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The User Configuration window appears.
3. Click the username link for the user you wish to edit.
4. To change the password, select Cha nge Password. Type the new password in the New Password and Confirm Password fields.
5. To change the privileges assigned to the user, select the desired privilege from the Privilege drop-down menu: Admin, Operator or User.
6. For Operator or User privilege users, select the target devices which can be managed by the user. For Admin privilege users, skip this step.
7. Click Apply Changes.
To change the password for the user account (for Operator and User users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The User Configuration window appears.
3. Type the new password in the New Password and Confirm Password fields.
4. Click Apply Changes.
To delete an appliance user (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The User Configuration window appears.
3. Click the username link for the user you wish to edit.

4. Click Delete. When prompted, confirm the action. The user is removed from the Username
list.
To create a new user group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Groups. The User Group Configuration window appears.
3. Click Add.
4. Specify the following information for the new user: a. In the User Group Name field, type the group name. b. In the Users area, select the users for the group. c. In the Targets area, select the target devices for the group.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To edit a user group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Groups. The User Group Configuration window appears.
3. Click the link of the group name you want to edit.
4. Specify the following information for the new user: a. In the User Group Name field, modify the group name. b. In the Users area, select or unselect the users for the group. c. In the Targets area, select or unselect the target devices for the group.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To delete a user group (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Users tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Groups. The User Group Configuration window appears.
3. Select the user group you want to delete.
Using the Alerts Viewer
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager logs user-defined alerts that occur on managed target devices in the Alert Viewer window. You may configure the SP manager to send a notification by email, MSN, SNMP Forward or Yahoo! message when specific alerts occur.
The Alerts Viewer window displays alerts and the corresponding date/time, source, IP address, event type and severity level. Alerts set as read will be listed in black; alerts not set as read will be listed in red. You may also click Detail next to an alert to view additional information.

To locate specific alerts, you may specify parameters to query the list of alerts. Users can also search alert messages through a query analyzer. The query parameters include occurrence period, IP address, event type, severity level and read status.
To query an alert (for all users):
1. Click the Alerts tab.
2. In the Alert Viewer area, select Show Alert Query.
3. In the Alert Query area, specify the following parameters for the query: a. In the Period From and To fields, type the date range for the alerts you wish to be included
in the query results. The default value of the To field is the current date.
b. From the IP address drop-down menu, select either All or a specific IP address for the
target devices you wish to be included in the query results.
c. From the Event Type drop-down menu, select the type of event(s) you wish to be included
in the query results: All, Unspecified, Threshold, Generic, Sensor-specific or OEM.
d. From the Severity drop-down menu, select the severity of the alerts you wish to be
included in the query results: All, Specified, Monitor, Information, OK, Non-Critical, Critical or Non-Recoverable.
e. From the Read Status drop-down menu, select the read status of the alerts you wish to be
included in the query results: All, Read or Unread.
4. Click Query to search the alerts. The qualifying alerts will be displayed in a list below the Alert Query area.
To set an alert as read (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Alerts tab.
2. From the list, select the unread alerts you wish to modify.
3. Click Set Selected Read to mark the selected alerts as read. The alerts change from red to black text to indicate the read status.
To delete an alert (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Alerts tab.
2. From the list, select the alerts you wish to delete.
3. Click Delete Selected to remove the alerts from the Alerts Viewer list.
Setting an alert action
You may create an alert action by configuring action parameters to your specifications. You may also configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to send emails, MSN messages or Yahoo! messages to specific users, or forward SNMP messages to specific target devices once an alert
occurs.
Before creating an alert action, configure the action settings to allow for alert notifications.

To configure action settings (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Alerts tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Action.
3. Click Action Setting.
4. Specify the following parameters:
In the SMTP Server field, type the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server address
for sending emails.
In the SMTP Server Account field, type the account used as the email sender.
In the SMTP Server Password field, type the password for the SMTP server account.
In the SMTP Sender field, type the display name of the email sender.
In the MSN User field, type the MSN account used as the MSN message sender.
In the MSN Password field, ty pe the password for the MSN user.
In the YAHOO IM User field, type the YAHOO IM account used as the Y AHOO IM
message sender.
In the YAHOO IM Password field, type the password for the YAHOO IM account.
5. Click Apply Changes.
To create an alert action (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Alerts tab.
2. In the top navigation bar, click Action.
3. Click Add.
4. In the Action Configuration area, specify the following information: a. Sel ect the Acti on Type from the drop-down menu: Email, MSN, YAHOO or
SNMP
Forward.
b. If you selected Email, type the email address of the receiver in the Email Address field.
-or­If you selected MSN, type the MSN account of the receiver in the Email Address field.
-or­If you selected SNMP Forward, type the IP address of the destination machine in the Receiver field.
-or­If you selected YAHOO, type the YAHOO IM account of the receiver in the YAHOO

5. Click Apply Changes.
To delete an alert action (for Admin users only):

4. Click Delete. You will be prompted to confirm the action. The action will be removed from the Action window.
Viewing the Accounting Log
The accounting log records and displays all MergePoint 5200 SP manager operations. The WEB accounting log displays operations performed using the MergePoint 520 0 SP manag e r web interface, while the CLP accounting log displays operations performed using SMASH CLP commands. SMASH CLP stands for Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) Command Line Protocol (CLP). Detailed information including operation time, login username, operation type, target device and console IP are displayed in the accounting log.
To view the accounting log (for Admin users only):
1. Click the Accounting Log tab.
2. Click WEB to view operations performed through the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web
interface.

Managing T arget Devices
This chapter describes how to configure target devices, view target device information, change target device status and perform remote management operations. You can access target devices by the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface, or by SSH pass-through. See
SSH Passthrough on
page 44 for more information.
NOTE: As noted throughout this chapter, some features are only available for target devices that have IPMI or iLO SPs. If a feature is not available for the selected target device, you cannot view or access the feature.
To perform any of the operations in this chapter, access the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface. See
MergePoint 5200 SP Manager Web Interface on page 3 for more information. In the side navigation bar, click the name of the target device you wish to manage. You may change the display name of a target device at any time by changing the alias. See
Changing the target device
alias on page 34 for more information.
When a target device is selected in the side navigation bar, the following tabs are available:
Properties: Use this tab to access BMC system information and Field Replaceable Unit (FRU),
change alias, and copy to or move the target device to a group.
System: Use this tab to remotely perform system operations, including power, chassis and
other advanced operations.
Configuration: Use this tab to remotely configure managed target devices, including changing
LAN parameters, managing user accounts, configuring PET settings, configuring Serial over LAN (SoL) and setting BMC time.
SEL: Use this tab to view target device System Event Log (SEL) information.
Sensor: Use this tab to view the sensor output from managed target devices (available only on
devices with IPMI BMCs).
SoL: Use this tab to activate and use SoL for accessing managed target devices.
Remote Control: Use this tab to connect to Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and Virtual
Network Computing (VNC) servers.

Target Device Properties
Using the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you may view target device properties, change the target device alias, copy or move a target device to a group or remove the target device from the SP manager. You may also access the BMC and FRU information only from target devices that have IPMI
BMCs.
Viewing the system name
To view the system name:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Properties tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click System Name. A window displaying target device
information
appears.
Changing the target device alias
To change the target device alias:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Properties tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click System Name. A window displaying target device
information
appears.
4. Click Change Alias. The Edit Target window appears.
5. In the Alias field, type the new name for the target device.
6. Click Apply Changes.
Adding a target device to a group
To add a target device to a group:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Properties tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click System Name. A window displaying target device
information
appears.
4. To add the target device to a group, click Copy To. From the Group drop-down menu, select a
group. The target device is added to the new group and remains in the current group.
-or­To move the target device to a new group, click Move To. From the Group drop-down menu, select a group. The target device is added to the new group and removed from the current
group.

Removing a target device
To remove a target device:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Properties tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click System Name. A window displaying information about the
target device appears.
4. Click Remove. When prompted, confirm the remove action. The selected target device is
removed from the side navigation bar.
Accessing BMC information (IPMI target devices only)
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager can find and display certain BMC information for the selected target device, including device ID, firmware version, IPMI version and manufacturer ID.
NOTE: This operation is only available for target devices that have IPMI BMCs.
To retrieve BMC information:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Properties tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Information. A detailed BMC information report appears.
Accessing FRU information (IPMI target devices only)
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager can find and display some Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) information for the selected target device, including chassis type, board language code and product
name.
To retrieve FRU information:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Properties tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click FRU Information. A detailed FRU information report appears.
Remote Power and Chassis Management
Using the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you may view the power status and the status of the chassis indicator LED (if available) on managed target devices, manage power and turn the LED on and off remotely. You may also initiate cold reset and self test operations on target devices that have IPMI BMCs.

Power management
To view and control the power status:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the System tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Power. The Power Information window appears and displays
the current power status of the target device.
4. To manage power on the target device, complete any of the followin g steps:
a. To turn on the target device, click Power On. For IPMI and iLO target devices, the button
is only available when the power is Off.
b. To turn off the BMC of the target device, click Power Off. For IPMI and iLO target
devices, the button is only available when the power is On.
c. To sh ut down a server before ensuring all running programs are closed normally, click
Graceful Shutdown. This operation works only when the operating system is logged in. This button is only available with IPMI target devices when the power is On.
d. To restart a server that is already turned on, click Power Reset. This operation corresponds
to a press of Reset button. For IPMI and iLO target devices, the button is only available when the power is On. For DRAC, this operation fails when the power is
Off.
e. To power down a server that is on, and after several second s power it up again, click
Power Cycle. For DRAC, this operation fails when the power is Off. For IPMI, the button is only available when the power is On.
Chassis management (IPMI and iLO target devices only)
To view and control the chassis status (LED):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the System tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Chassis. The Chassis Information window appears.
4. The current chassis status of the target device is displ ayed (IPMI target devices only).
5. To modify how often the LED flashes, enter the number of seconds in th e Indicator ON
Seconds field (IPMI target devices only).
6. To change the chassis indicator status of the target device, complete either of the
following
steps:
To turn the LED on, click Set Indicator On. The LED flashes for the time specified in the Indicator ON Seconds field.
-or­To turn the LED off, click Set Indicator Off.

Advanced operations (IPMI target devices only)
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager also allows remote cold reset and self testing.
To perform a cold reset on a target device:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the System tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Advanced T ools. The Setting window appears.
4. Click Cold Reset to perform a cold reset on the selected target device. A message will appear
to indicate the success status of the cold reset.
To self test a target device:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the System tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Advanced T ools. The Setting window appears.
4. Click Self Test to perform a self test on the selected target device. A message will appear to
indicate the success status of the self test.
Configuring Target Devices for Management
This section describes how to configure the following types of parameters for target devices: IP addresses (DHCP-configured or static), user accounts, PET alerts, SoL session parameters and the time on a BMC (BMC time).
Changing LAN parameters
To change LAN parameters:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click LAN. The LAN window appears.
4. From the IP Address Source drop-down menu, select Static or DHCP as the source type. If you
select Static as the source type, specify the following information: a. In the IP Address field, type the OOB IP address. b. In the Subnet Mask field, type the subnet mask. c. In the Gateway Ad dress field, type the gateway IP address.
NOTE: If you select DHCP, the target device’s OOB IP address is dynamically distributed from a DHCP server, and the fields for configuring a static IP cannot be edited.
5. Click Apply Changes.

Managing user accounts on target devices
The Users window lists all user accounts for the selected target device. MergePoint 5200 SP manager users with Admin privileges may change user account information on target devices.
NOTE: This is available for target devices that have either DRAC, iLO or IPMI SPs. For target devices with IPMI SPs, you can only edit existing user accounts. For target devices with iLO SPs, you can edit, add or delete users. For target devices with DRAC SPs, you can create or delete users, or modify existing user privileges.
To edit a user account (IPMI targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Click Edit next to the user you wish to modify.
5. Specify any of the following information:
a. To enable the username on the selected target device, select Enable User. b. In the User Name field, type a new username. c. To change the password, select Change Password. Type the new password in the New
Password and Confirm Password fields.
d. Select Admin, Operator, User or No Access from the User Privilege menu.
NOTE: The specific privileges assigned to the Admin, Operator and User privilege types vary based on the type of SP on the target device. See
User Privileges on page 49 for which privileges are checked on the SP manager
when a target device user attempts to perform an action.
6. Click Apply Changes.
To create a new user account (DRAC targets only):
NOTE: The DRAC target devices can have only 16 users, so there are 16 lines of user information in the user
list. The users are divided into two types: those with usernames and those without usernames. When you create a new user account, you are defining a username, password and user privilege to a user that does not have a username. You cannot add another line to the user list.
1. In the side navigation bar, click a DRAC target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Click Edit next to a user without a username.
5. Specify any of the following information:
a. In the User Name field, type a name for the new username. b. To change the password, select Change Password. Type the new password in the New
Password and Confirm Password fields.
c. Select Admin, Power User or Guest from the User Privilege menu.

6. Click Apply Changes.
To edit a user account (DRAC targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a DRAC target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Click Edit next to the user you wish to modify.
5. Specify any of the following information:
a. To change the password, select Change Password. Type the new password in the New
Password and Confirm Password fields.
b. Select Admin, Power User or Guest from the User Privilege menu.
6. Click Apply Changes.
To remove a user account (DRAC targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a DRAC target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Click Remove User next to the user you wish to remove.
NOTE: The line of the removed user will not disappear from the user list. Instead, it will become a user without a username that has Guest user privilege (no matter which user privilege it had before).
To add a user account (iLO targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Click Add.
5. Type the username in the Username field.
6. Type the password in the Password field.
7. Click Apply Changes.
To edit a user account (iLO targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Select the name of the user to edit.
5. Modify the username or the password as desired.
6. Click Apply Changes.

To delete a user account (iLO targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Users. The Users window appears.
4. Click the radio button next to the name of the user to delete.
5. Click Delete.
6. Click Apply Changes.
Configuring PET alerts
Users with Admin privileges may configure PET alerts separately for each target device.
To configure PET alerts:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Event Destination. The PET Setting window appears.
4. Specify any of the following information:
a. Select Enable or Disable next to BMC Send Alerts. Enabling alerts causes the BMC to
send alerts when specific events occur.
b. In the Community String field, type the value to be displayed in the PET trap community
string field. The default value is
public.
c. For a target device with an IPMI SP, type up to four IP addresses in the Alert Destination
IP Address fields. For a target device with an iLO SP, type up to three IP addresses in the Alert Destination IP Address fields. To configure the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to receive alerts for the target device, enter the IP address for the appliance in one of the Alert Destination IP Address fields.
d. For a target device with an iLO or DRAC SP, type the IP address of the SP manager in the
Alert Destination IP Address field.
Configuring SoL parameters (IPMI target devices only)
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager allows you to define SoL parameters for target devices with IPMI BMCs, including Enable/Disable Serial over LAN, baud rate and channel privilege limit
level.
NOTE: This feature is only available for target devices that have IPMI BMCs.
To configure SoL parameters:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.

3. In the top navigation bar, click Serial over LAN. The Serial over LAN Configuration
window
appears.
4. Specify any of the following information:
a. Select or deselect Enable Serial over LAN as desired. b. From the Baud Rate drop-down menu, select the baud rate. c. From the Channel Privilege Level Limit drop-down menu, select Administrator, Operator
or User as the privilege level.
d. From the Retry Count drop-down menu, select the number of times for a retry to occur,
from 0 to 7 times.
e. In the Retry Interval field, enter the number of 10 milliseconds to elapse between
each
retry.
5. Click Apply Changes.
Setting BMC time (IPMI target devices only)
NOTE: This feature is only available for target devices that have IPMI BMCs.
To set target BMC time:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Time. The Set Time window appears.
4. To synchronize the BMC time with the appliance time clock, select S y nc with Appliance.
-or­To synchronize the BMC time with the console time clock, select Sync with Client PC.
-or­To specify the BMC time, select Other and select the time from the pop-up calendar.
5. Click Apply Changes.
Viewing SEL Events
You may use the MergePoint 5200 SP manager to view the SEL on a managed target device.
To view SEL events:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the SEL tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click SEL. The SEL window appears.
4. A detailed SEL event list appears.
To clear the SEL events (IPMI targets and DRAC targets only):
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.

2. Click the SEL tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click SEL. The SEL window appears.
4. Click Clear All. All currently listed events are removed from the list.
Viewing Sensor Status on an IPMI Target Device
The MergePoint 5200 SP manager can detect the status of fan, temperature and voltage sensors on managed target devices. By clicking the Sensor tab, you may view a detailed report on a device’s sensors that includes the sensor name, type, current reading and status.
NOTE: This feature is only available when the target device has an IPMI BMC.
To view sensor status:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Sensor tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click Sensor. The Sensor window appears.
4. A detailed list of sensors and corresponding information appears.
Using SoL
SoL enables the console output of a managed system to be redirected over an IPMI session over IP. This allows remote users to have text-based access to the BIOS, utilities, operating systems, such as Command Line interfaces and Linux console and management services such as Microsoft's serial­based Emergency Management Services (EMS). At the same time, SoL provides access to IPMI platform management functions.
With the MergePoint 5200 SP manager, you may use SoL to access the Linux serial console and Microsoft EMS/Special Administration Console (SAC) interfaces over LAN. When SoL is activated, the SP manager sends any data written to the serial port to the SoL client. Conversely, the SP manager also sends any keyboard activity at the SoL client to the BMC. The managed target device BMC then writes the packets to the system serial IO. This allows you to view, configure and reset the BMC of a managed target device remotely.
NOTE: Before using the SP manager SoL features, install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.5 or later.
NOTE: For information about configuring BIOS settings for SoL, see Configuring the BIOS Settings for SoL on page 57.
To activate SoL:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the SoL tab.

3. In the top navigation bar, click SoL.
4. Click Open SoL Window to activate the SoL window.
NOTE: If the target device is a Windows server, an EMS/SAC prompt is returned. If the target device is a Linux server, the Linux serial console prompt is returned. Type valid SAC commands or Linux console commands in the SoL window to conduct SoL operations, such as BIOS configuration and power reset.
To view SoL history:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the SoL tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click SoL History.
4. Click Open SoL History Window to display all the commands entered in SoL mode and
their
output.
To replay SoL:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the SoL tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click SoL Replay.
4. Click Open SoL Replay Window to replay SoL actions and results, including the BIOS result.
Click and drag the speed bar to control replay speed.
Remote Control
You may connect to a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or Virtual Network Computing (VNC) server remotely through the MergePoint 5200 SP manager.
To connect to an RDP server:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Remote Control tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click RDP. The RDP window appears.
4. In the Server field, type the information required to connect to the RDP server.
5. Click Connect.
To connect to a VNC server:
1. In the side navigation bar, click a target device name.
2. Click the Remote Control tab.
3. In the top navigation bar, click VNC. The VNC window appears.
4. In the Server field, type the information required to connect to the VNC server.
5. In the Port field, type the port name for the VNC server.

6. Click Connect.
SSH Passthrough
SSH Passthrough allows you to perform management operations to target devices by using commands over Secure Shell (SSH) version 2.
You may establish an SSH connection to a target device by specifying the appropriate name in the SSH command. When opening an SSH passthrough connection to an appliance, you may include an SP command at the end of the SSH command. If the SP command is not present at the end of the SSH command, the appliance will provide the user with a menu of SP commands to choose from.
SSH Passthrough commands
There are two types of SSH commands: commands without an SP command and commands with an SP command.
To access a target device through SSH Passthrough:
Run the command by entering the following: ssh –t userA:serverB@applia nceC.
NOTE: In this example, userA is trying to access a target device serverB that is connected to a MergePoint 5200 SP manager applianceC.
This command allows the user to get access to serverB's service processor. A menu appears after successfully logging in. The user can manage serverB by choosing
a menu item.
To access a target device through SSH Passthrough with SP command:
Run the command by entering the following: ssh –t userA:serverB@applianceC [command].
NOTE: In this example, userA is trying to access the SP feature [command] on a target device serverB that is connected to a MergePoint 5200 SP manager applianceC.
The first part of the command will establish an SSH sessi on to the MergePoint 5200 SP manager. The SP command will be passed through to the service processor on the appliance. The appliance will validate and execute the command.
For example, a command to open an SSH session to the appliance and execute power on command may look like this: ssh –t jsmith:MGP@172.30.19.122 poweron.

Appendix C: Configuring the BIOS Settings for SoL
SoL enables the console output of a managed system to be redirected over an IPMI session over IP. This allows remote users to have text-based access to the BIOS, utilities, operating systems such as Command Line interfaces and Linux console and management services such as Microsoft's serial­based EMS. At the same time, SoL provides access to IPMI platform management
functions.
To set the BIOS:
1. Enter the BIOS setting.
2. Select the Console Redirection option.
3. Point to Console Redirection and click Enter.
4. Change the Redirection After Boot value from Disabled to Enabled.
5. Save the settings to BIOS.
To set the BIOS with Windows 2003:
If your operating system is Windows 2003 Enterprise, enter the following command in the command line.

Appendix D: How To Configure Virtual Serial Port
MergePoint 5200 service processor managers have the ability to access target devices with iLO through the Virtual Serial port. To use this feature, you must enable the Virtual Serial port on both the BIOS Serial Console and EMC Console. When Virtual Serial Port is enabled, it provides remote access through the iLO management controller to the BIOS Serial Console.
To configure BIOS Serial Console:
1. Enter ROM-Based Setup Utility by pressing F9 during power up or system reset.
2. Select BIOS Serial Console and EMS on the main menu.
3. Press Enter to display the options.
4. Select BIOS Serial Console Port on the options.
5. Press Enter to display the options of BIOS Serial Console Port.
6. Select Com1 or Com2 as the BIOS Serial Console Port.
7. Press Enter to save the selection.
To configure EMC Console:

BMC
The Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) is a specialized micro-controller on an IPMI target device that monitors and logs environmental conditions, such as temperature, voltage and power
supply.
CIM
Common Information Model (CIM), developed by DMTF, is a common data model of a schema used to describe overall management information in a network or enterprise environment.
Client PC
The client PC is a remote user workstation that is currently running the MergePoint 5200 SP manager web interface through a browser.
DMTF
The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) is a not-for-profit association promoting enterprise and systems management and interoperability. Visit www.dmft.org for more
information.
DRAC
The Dell Remote Access Card (DRAC) is an intelligent service processor integrated on certain Dell target devices. DRAC III and IV target devices are supported by the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager.
iLO
Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) is an intelligent service processor integrated on certain Hewlett Packard (HP) target devices. iLO target devices are supported by the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager.
IPMI
Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) defines a set of common interfaces to computer hardware and firmware. System administrators may use IPMI to monitor system health and manage a system with an IPMI BMC. Target devices with IPMI BMCs are supported by the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager.
MOF
Managed Object Format (MOF) is a data structure used by CIM to describe all managed targets on the

Platform Event Trap (PET) is a specific format of SNMP trap used for system management alerts.
SSH
Secure Shell (SSH) is a UNIX-based command interface and protocol that allows administrators to securely access a remote target device.
SMASH CLP
Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) Command Line Protocol (CLP) has been used to create commands that can be used to configure the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager and configure and access target device groups though Telnet or SSHv2 sessions.
SoL
With Serial over LAN (SoL), the serial console output of a device is redirected over IP, providing access to text-based interfaces for BIOS, utilities, operating systems and applications and to service processor functions.
Target device
A target device can be a data center component such as a server or router that an administrator can remotely manage through the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager.
Telnet session
A Telnet session is a type of target device session. Once the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager is set up, a user may connect directly to a target device using Telnet and manage the target device using SMASH CLP commands.
Unit
Unit refers to the MergePoint 5200 service processor manager. A device being managed by the appliance is referred to a target or a target device.
WBEM
WBEM stands for Web Based Enterprise Management. WBEM is a set of management and Internet standard technologies developed by DMTF to unify the management of distribut ed computing
