Appendix D: Understanding Wireless
Wireless technology is being used in many innovative ways to help people
work and communic ate more efficiently. Increased mobility and the absence
of cabling and other fixed infrastruct ure have proven to be beneficial for
many users.
People use wireless technology for many different purposes:
• Mobility – productivit y increases when people have access to data i n
any location wit hin the operating range of thei r W irele ss Extender.
Management decisions ba s ed on real-time i nform ation can
signifi cantly improve worker effi ciency.
• Low Implementation Costs – Wireless Extenders are easy to set up,
manage, change and relocate. Environments that change frequently
benefi t from the ease of implementing wireless. Wireless Extenders
operate in locations where installation of wiring may be impractical.
• Installation and Network Expansion – installing a Wireless Extender
can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through
walls and ceilings. Wireless technology allows the network to go where
wires cannot go – even outside the home or offi ce.
Standards-based technology
The LongView Wireless transmitter and receiver util ize a proprietary
design ba s ed on the 802.11a standa rd. The IEEE 802 .11a st anda rd is an
exten sion of the 80 2.11b standard. It increases the data rate up t o 54 Mbp s
within the 5 GHz band, uti liz ing OFDM technology.
This technology works by transmitting high-speed digital data over a radio
wave utilizing OFDM technology. OFDM works by splitting the radio signal
into multiple smaller sub-signals that are then transmitted simultaneously
at different frequencies to the receiver. OFDM reduces the amount of
crosstalk (interference) in signal transmissions.
Installation considerations
The LongView Wireless Extender allows you to access your computer using
a wireless connection from virtually anywhere within its operating range.
Keep in mind, however, that the number, thickness and location of walls,
ceilings and other objects that the wireless signals must pass through may
limit the range. Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materials and
background RF (radio frequency) noise in your home or business.
Appendices 27
To maximize your wireless range:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the transmitter and
receiver to a minimum – each wall or ceiling can reduce your wireless
product’s range.
2. Be aware of the direct line between your transmitter and receiver. A
wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45° angle appears to be almost
3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2° angle, it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick!
Position your devices so that the signal will travel straight through a
wall or ceiling for better reception.
3. Building mat erials can impede the wireless signal – a solid metal door or
alumin um studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position your
wirel ess de vices and computers with wir el ess adaptors so that the signal
passes through drywall or open doorways and not other materials.
4. Keep your LongView Wireless transmitter and receiver away (at least
3 to 6 feet or 1 to 2 meters) from electrical devices or appliances that
generate extreme RF noise.
