In case new input car ds f o r t h e PH 8 . 3 are o ffered , th e i n t ernal operating so ftware ( f irmwa r e) may need a n u pdate. T h e
corre s pondi ng s o ftware i s s t ored on a small da t a c a rrier, a
so-c a l l ed EE P ROM d o ngle. If n e ce ssary, th is wi l l be suppl i ed
with t he purc h ase of a new i n put ca rd.
To p e rform an update, s w itch off the dev i c e with t h e mains
switc h (18) and insert the E E P ROM dong l e into th e config u ration p o r t (17). The co ntacts o f the E E PROM do ngle mu s t be
turn ed away f r om the m a ins plu g (19). Inco r rect in s er tion

2. Basic operation
2.1 Fi rst operation / self test
When th e u n it i s switch e d o n v ia the main s s w i tch (18) , a socalled se l f-test is perf o rmed. The dev i ce c h e cks the c onfigu rati on and fu n c tionali t y of the i n stalled c ompone n ts. Th e c urrent stat u s of th e har dware test is s h o wn o n th e di s play (6).

capac i ty is to o low, the soun d o f the pick-up s y stem may l ack
brilli a nce. I f the c apacity is too high, the re s o nance s hifts too

the best ou t of ea c h car tridge , th e g a i n o f th e PH 8. 3 ca n b e
set indivi d ually for eac h in put i n 5 dB ste ps. I t i s re c ommended to start with "0 d B " a n d i n creas e th e g a in u n til you are
satis f ied wi t h the overall sound.

in t h e bas s ra n g e of the music signa l , ve r y larg e def l ectio n s
would h a ve to b e c ut int o t he viny l . Howeve r, t h e large g roove
spaci n g requi red fo r this w o u ld re d uce th e playin g time o f the
reco r d to on l y a few m inutes . C onver s e ly, the sign als in t h e
high freq u e ncy ra n g e are ver y w eak and would b e l o st in
groov e nois e with " l inear" c u tting. There fore, t he musi c signal
is pre-e q u alize d during the pr o d uction pr ocess: I n t h e b a ss

six most comm o n e q ualizat ion c u r ves using the EQ se l e ction
keys (4). Often the la bels or rec o rd s l e e ves o f old e r rec o r ds
show the pre-equ a lizatio n u s e d a t t he t ime. Th is can be used

mains sw i tch (18) . Now p ress an d ho ld the MUTE bu t ton (10 )
while you s w itch o n the unit a gain w ith th e mai ns swi t ch (18 ) .
