AntiVir Mobile protects Pocket PCs (PDAs) under Pocket PC 2002, Windows Mobile
2003 for Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, Windows Mobile 5.0,
Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional and Windows Mobile 6.0 Classic against attacks with
PDA-specific malware.
3.1 Delivery scope
The main performance features of AntiVir Mobile:
• Specially developed PDA engine and search algorithms for detecting and handling
PDA-specific malware
• Installation of the program package with ActiveSync
• Separate update of search algorithms (= search engine) and virus definitions via the
Internet and ActiveSync
• Direct single file update via Internet (WLAN, LAN, GPRS)
• Individual configuration of the scanning scope and handling of affected files
• Comprehensive notification and reporting function
• Extremely low resource requirements
• Guard (real-time scan) for monitoring files which are opened on the Pocket PC or
copied on the device.
• Text message protection to check incoming text messages or for protection against
SMS spam.
The text message protection is not supported by AntiVir Mobile for Pocket
PC 2002 or all other devices without SMS support. The text message
protection is only available from Version 6.41. An update of older versions
does not contain text message protection.

3.2 System requirements

3.3 Licensing
Activate your license for AntiVir Mobile with the license file hbedv.key. You will receive
the license file from Avira GmbH by email. The license file contains the license for all
products that you have ordered with an order process. The license contains information
on the product that you have licensed and the period for which this product is licensed.
License AntiVir Mobile during synchronization:
f Copy your license file into the ActiveSync directory on your desktop PC.
f If the synchronization process is not started automatically, start ActiveSync and
click Synchronization.
The Pocket PC is synchronized, the license file is copied to the Pocket PC.
AntiVir Mobile is started automatically once synchronization is complete.
f Skip the following section Licensing AntiVir Mobile manually.
License AntiVir Mobile manually:
For manual transmission of the license file, use the My Computer folder or the Windows
Explorer of your desktop PC. The Pocket PC is displayed there with a hardware entry
(e.g. Mobile device).
AntiVir Mobile cannot be used without a valid license.
f Open this hardware entry to copy the license file directly to the Pocket PC in the
directory "My Documents".
Start AntiVir Mobile.

AntiVir Mobile starts the dialog Install License:
f Click on Please select a license.
A dialog opens in which you can select the license file that you want to install.
f Click on the license file hbedv.key.
f The dialog Install License opens again. If the license file is valid, it can be installed by
clicking on Install.
If installation was successful, AntiVir Mobile is started.

4 Installation and uninstallation
4.1 Installation
AntiVir Mobile is installed via a self-extracting ZIP file. You can download this ZIP file
when you purchase the product from the Avira website.
For Pocket PC 2002 download the installation file
avwince_ppc2002_de.exe. For all other supported operating systems,
download the installation file avwince_de.exe.
f Copy the installation file to your desktop PC.
f Connect your Pocket PC to your desktop PC.
f Ensure that ActiveSync is activated.
f Run the installation file on your desktop PC by clicking on Setup.
Installation begins. Connection is made to your Pocket PC with the aid of
ActiveSync.
fAnswer the question Do you want to install the AntiVir Mobile in the default directory
for application installations with YES.
The installation files are copied to your Pocket PC.
f Click OK.
Installation is now complete and AntiVir Mobile can be started.
If an AntiVir Mobile version is already installed on your Pocket PC, you
will receive relevant information connected with a question as to whether
you want to continue with the new installation/update.
The installation package does not contain a license file. If AntiVir Mobile
is started for the first time, a dialog Install license appears. More detailed
information is provided in the chapter License information.
4.2 Uninstallation
Uninstall AntiVir Mobile as follows:
f Open the settings via the Start-menu.
f Select the tab System.
f Click on Remove programs.
f Select the entry AntiVir Mobile and click on Remove.
f Confirm the security question Remove program with Yes.
f The software is uninstalled.
After successful uninstallation, the entry AntiVir Mobile is removed from the list
of installed software.

5.2 Start AntiVir Mobile
Start AntiVir Mobile as follows:
f Open the programs via the Start-menu.
f Select AntiVir Mobile.
The AntiVir Mobile start dialog opens.
It is recommended to start a scan immediately after starting the program
in order to detect and eliminate a possible infection.
An AntiVir Mobile scan is started automatically after every
synchronization if the corresponding option "Start scan after sync" is
activated in the configuration dialog. See chapter Configure other settings.
5.3 Stopping the AntiVir Mobile Guard after a soft reset
After a soft reset, you can stop the AntiVir Mobile Guard. A dialogue appears in which
you can select whether you want to stop the Guard:
f Click on Yes to stop the Guard
f Click on No to start the Guard
If you stop AntiVir Mobile Guard, file accesses are not monitored. Your
system is not protected against viruses and malware by the on-access scan.
5.4 About AntiVir Mobile / Help
Obtain version information on AntiVir Mobile, find out how long your license is valid
and see when you carried out your last update as follows:
f Click on

5.5 Tray Icon
The tray icon in the system tray of the "today screen" displays the status of the AntiVir
Mobile Guard.
Icon Description
AntiVir Guard is activated.

5.5.1 Context menu
Central functions of AntiVir Mobile can be quickly accessed via the context menu of the
tray icon. To open the context menu, click on the tray icon.
Entries in the context menu
Activate AntiVir Guard: enables or disables the AntiVir Mobile Guard.
Start AntiVir: opens the AntiVir Mobile Main Program.
Start scan: starts a scan.
Start Update: starts an update.
Configure AntiVir: opens the AntiVir Mobile Configuration.
Add license: opens the license dialog.
Help: opens this online help.
Avira on Web: opens the web portal of Avira on the Internet. The condition for this is
that you have an active connection to the Internet.

6 Configuration
After installation, AntiVir Mobile is already configured as standard with the most useful
settings.
AntiVir Mobile provides you with many possibilities to configure protection against
viruses and malware and to set reactions of the components to a detection and adapt
them to your requirements.
With the AntiVir Mobile Guard you continually protect your Pocket PC and scan all data
as soon as they are opened or copied on the Pocket PC.

With the AntiVir Mobile Scanner you carry out an on-access scan for viruses and
malware and scan every single file but also complete directories of your Pocket PC as
required.

The text message protection is used as a filter when receiving text messages to prevent
saving of unwanted text messages.

To start a scan and/or update after a synchronization or to set the default values for
AntiVir Mobile:

With the Internet update of AntiVir Mobile you can use a proxy server.

6.1 Open configuration
f Click on in the icon bar.
The configuration dialog is opened.

You can reset the default values of the configuration in the tab General.
6.2 Configure AntiVir Mobile Scanner
Use the On-Access Scanner with the AntiVir Mobile Scanner to specifically scan one or
more files and programs and also directories, even if you are not currently accessing
them.
6.2.1 Action for concerning files
Set how the AntiVir Mobile Scanner is to react on detection of viruses and malware as
follows:
f Select the action to be carried out in the Action for concerning files section:
– Interactive
A dialog box is displayed and allows you to select further actions in case of a
detection.
– Automatic
The configured actions are carried out automatically in case of a detection.
f Select the automatic actions to be carried out:
– Delete
The file is deleted. The detection and the relevant action are also entered in the
logfile.
– Notify only
The file is reported by the program. The detection and the relevant action are also
entered in the logfile.
6.2.2 Scan ROM files as well as cards and network folders
Set whether all files in the ROM are to be scanned as follows:
f Select the tab Scanner.
f In the area Scan select the option ROM files.
This setting is activated by default.
If existing cards and network folders are to be scanned:
f In the area Scan activate the option Card & Network folders.

6.2.3 Files to omit
You can exclude individual files from the on-demand scan of the AntiVir Mobile Scanner.
How to set which files are to be excluded from the on-demand scan:
f Select the tab Scanner.
f Enter the file to be excluded with the path name in the input box Files to omit.
- OR -
Open the browse dialogue with the button
and select the file to be excluded.
f Click on Add to add the specified file to the list of files to be excluded.
The specified file is added to the list of files to be excluded.
If you want to delete files from the list of the files to be excluded:
f Mark the file you want to delete in the list of files to be excluded.
f Click on Delete to remove the file from the list.
The marked file has been removed from the list of files to be excluded.
The maximum length of a file name with the path name is 255 characters.
The files added to this list are recorded in the log file of the AntiVir Mobile
Scanner. Check the log file of the scanner from time to time for these files
and check whether these files are to continue to be excluded from the ondemand scan.
6.3 Configure AntiVir Mobile Guard
Normally, you would want to monitor your system constantly. For this, use the OnAccess Scanner of the AntiVir Mobile Guard. In this way all files on the Pocket PC are
scanned for viruses and malware as soon as they are opened or copied on the device. The
AntiVir Mobile Guard does not scan files that are newly written.
6.3.1 Activate AntiVir Mobile Guard
Activate the AntiVir Mobile Guard as follows:
f Select the tab Guard.
f Activate the option Activate Guard.
The AntiVir Mobile Guard is active and scans files as soon as they are opened or
copied on the device.
After a soft reset on the Pocket PC, you are asked whether AntiVir Mobile
Guard should be restarted or not.

6.3.2 Action for concerning files
Set how AntiVir Mobile Guard is to react on detection of viruses and malware as follows:
f Select the tab Guard.
f Select the action to be carried out in the Action for concerning files section:
– Interactive
A dialog box is displayed and allows you to select further actions in case of a

– Automatic
The configured actions are carried out automatically in case of a detection.
f Select the automatic actions to be carried out:
– Delete

6.3.3 Processes to be excluded
You can exclude file accesses by certain persons from monitoring by the Guard.
How to define which processes are to be excluded from monitoring by the Guard:
f Select the tab Guard.
f Enter the name of the process in the input box Processes to be excluded.
f Click on Add to add the process to the list of processes to be excluded.
The specified process is added to the list of processes to be excluded.
It is not possible to enter any number of processes. When the maximum
number of processes has been exceeded, further entries are not added to
the list.
If you want to delete processes from the list of processes to be excluded:
f Mark the process you want to delete in the list of processes to be excluded.
f Click on Delete to remove the process from the list.
The marked process has been removed from the list of processes to be excluded.
To accept changes to the list of processes to be excluded, it is necessary to
restart the Guard. This is automatically carried out as soon as you change
the list with Add or Delete.

6.4 Configure text message protection
When receiving text messages, the text message protection is used as a filter to intercept
messages from unwanted or unknown senders. In the case of unknown senders of a text
message, a dialogue appears in which you can select whether you want to allow or block
reception of the message (see chap. Text message protection). The selected action can be
saved: if this option is enabled, the telephone number of a 'blocked' sender is added to
the list of unwanted senders. The number of an 'allowed' sender is stored in the list of
allowed senders. Depending on the configuration, in the case of unwanted senders of a
text message, the dialogue is also called or a pre-defined action automatically carried out.
You have the following configuration possibilities:
• Enable or disable text message
• Select an action to be carried out if a message is received from an unwanted sender
• Administration of the lists of allowed and unwanted senders
Unwanted senders:
Telephone numbers of senders whose messages were blocked with the enabled
option Save action
All telephone numbers removed from the list of allowed senders
Allowed senders:
Telephone numbers of senders whose messages were permitted with the enabled
option Save action
Telephone numbers of the address book if the option Use address book is enabled
and the entered number was not removed from the list of allowed senders
How to enable or disable the text message protection:
f Select the index card SMS.
f Enable or disable the option Enable text message protection.
How to define an action to be carried out when a message is received from an unwanted
sender:
f Select the index card SMS.
f Select an action in the area Action for unwanted sender. You have the following
options:
– interactive
If a message is received from an unwanted sender, a dialogue appears in which
you can select whether you want to allow or block reception of the message, i.e.
saving of the message.
– automatic
No dialogue appears when a message is received from an unwanted sender. The
action you selected in the list box is automatically carried out:
Block
The message is permitted i.e. it is saved and can be read.
Allow
The message is permitted i.e. it is saved and can be read.

How to administer the lists Allowed senders and Unwanted senders:
f Select the index card SMS.
In the area Allowed senders, you can automatically add telephone numbers of the
address book to the list of allowed sender and delete numbers from the list of
allowed senders. In the area Unwanted senders you can delete telephone numbers
from the list of wanted senders.
If you want to add telephone numbers of the address book to the list of allowed senders:
f Enable the option Use address book.
All telephone numbers of the address book are displayed in the list of allowed
senders. The messages of the senders in the address book are now treated as
allowed senders.
When the option Use address book is disabled, the messages of the
senders in the address book are treated as unknown senders. When a
message is received, a dialogue appears asking whether you want to allow
or block the message.
If you want to delete telephone numbers from the lists of allowed or unwanted senders:
f Mark the number you want to delete in the list.
Navigate in the list with the arrow keys.
f Click on the button Delete.
The marked number is removed from the list.
If you delete a number from the list of allowed senders, it is automatically
added to the list of unwanted senders.
If you delete a number from the list of unwanted senders, it is now added
to the list of allowed senders if it is a number in the address book AND the
option Use address book is enabled.

6.5 Configure other settings
6.5.1 Start scan after sync
In this way you can set whether a scan is started automatically after every
synchronization process of AntiVir Mobile:
f Select the General tab.
f Activate the option Start scan after sync.
This setting is activated by default.
– invisible
The scan is started silent. In case of detection the malware dialog will always be
displayed. Enabled by default.
– maximized
The scan is started with a maximized window.
It is recommended to leave this value set, as with every synchronization
process viruses or unwanted programs can get onto your Pocket PC.
6.5.2 Start scan on Card insert
In this way you can set whether a scan of AntiVir Mobile is started automatically after
e.g. a SD-Card is insert into your device.
f Select the General tab.
f Activate the option Start scan on Card insert.
This option is enabled as the default setting.
– invisible
– The scan is started silent. In case of detection the malware dialog will always be
displayed. Enabled by default .
– maximized
– The scan is started with a maximized window.
It is recommended to leave this value set, as with new Card viruses or
unwanted programs can get onto your Pocket PC.
6.5.3 Start update after sync
In this way you can set whether an update is started automatically after every
synchronization process of AntiVir Mobile:
f Select the General tab.
f Activate the option Start update after sync.
This option is disabled as the default setting.

6.5.4 Reset default settings
In this way you can reset all values of the configuration to the default values:
f Select the General tab.
f Click in the field Reset all settings on Default settings.
6.6 Configure update
With the Internet update of AntiVir Mobile you can use a direct connection to the web
server or a connection via a proxy server.
How to set whether you want to use a proxy server:
f In AntiVir Mobile, select the index card Update.
f In the area Proxy server select an option:
– Do not use a proxy server
If this option is enabled, connection to the web server is not made via a proxy
server. For the Internet Update, a direct connection to the web server is made.
– Use system settings
If this option is enabled, the current system settings for the connection to the
web server via a proxy server are used
If you use a proxy server:
f Set up a proxy server with the ActiveSync process and set the connection settings to
'Connection to company network'.

AntiVir Mobile offers two ways to find viruses and malware:

7.1 Checking active files (on-access scan)
The AntiVir Mobile Guard scans files as standard in real time (On-Access) for viruses and
malware as soon as they are opened or copied on the device.
The AntiVir Mobile Guard should be permanently activated to effectively protect your
Pocket PC against viruses and malware.
Check whether the AntiVir Mobile Guard is active as follows:
f Select the tab Guard.
f Check whether the Guard is activated.
f Activate the Guard if necessary.
7.2 Targeted scan for viruses and malware (on-demand scan)
Start a specific scan as follows:
f Click on
in the toolbar.
If you want to interrupt a scan, click on

7.3 Reacting to found viruses and malware
If viruses or malware are detected by AntiVir Mobile, you can react in the following ways:
The possibilities displayed depend on the module (AntiVir Mobile Guard
or AntiVir Mobile Scanner) that reports the detection.
•Delete
The file is deleted. The detection and the corresponding action are also entered in
the logfile.
•Report only
The file is reported by the program. It is possible to run the file. The detection and
the corresponding action are also entered in the logfile.
•Deny access
Access to the file is not permitted. It is not possible to run the file. The detection
and the corresponding action are also entered in the logfile.
7.4 Display scan results
7.4.1 Display scan results of the on-demand scan
f Click on in the toolbar.
f Select the tab Guard.
The scan results of the AntiVir Mobile Guard are displayed.
7.4.2 Display scan results of the on-access scan

7.5.1 Open logfile of on-access scan
Open the logfile of the AntiVir Mobile Guard as follows:

7.5.2 Open logfile of on-demand scan

7.5.5 Entries of the logfile
Which entries are displayed depends on the logfile of the individual
module (AntiVir Mobile Guard, AntiVir Mobile Scanner, AntiVir Mobile
Updater, AntiVir Mobile text message protection).
• Creation date
Date when the logfile was created.
• Program info
Version information of the individual program components.
• Installation directory
Installation directory of AntiVir Mobile.
• License info
Information on licensee, serial number of the license and validity period of the
installed license.
• System info
Version information on the installed version and processor type.
• Update
Start the last update, update actions.
• Scanning
Start of the scan, current configuration with which the scan is carried out, detections
/ error messages, end of the scan, the time required and the scan results.
• Text message protection
Status of the text message protection (text message protection enabled / disabled),
configuration changes, text message received (time stamp, number of the sender, the
first 15 characters of the message), actions carried out for text message received
(text message blocked or allowed, action saved).

8 Text message protection
If the text message protection is enabled, messages from unknown senders or depending
on configuration of unwanted senders are intercepted. A dialogue appears asking
whether you want to allow or block the text message.
The following details are displayed:
• Number: telephone number of the sender of the text message
• Contents: display of the first 15 characters of the text message
If it is a sender from the address book, the contact name in the telephone
book is displayed instead of the telephone number.
If you want to receive the message:
f Enable the option allow.
f Confirm your selection with OK.
The text message is saved and can be read.
If you do not want to receive the message:
f Enable the option block.
f Confirm your selection with OK.
The text message is deleted.
You can save the actions carried out:
f Enable the option Save selected action.
All blocked senders are added to the list of unwanted senders.
All allowed senders are added to the list of allowed senders.

9 Update
AntiVir Mobile can only effectively protect your Pocket PC against malware if you update
the search algorithms (search engine) and the virus definitions (= VDF file) at regular
intervals.
It is possible to update the files manually.
• See chapter: Manual updating
Alternatively it is possible to download the data directly from the web server when
connected to the Internet.
• See chapter: Internet update
AntiVir Mobile has a so-called rollback function.
If an update fails, AntiVir Mobile automatically resets the status which
existed on your system before the update was carried out.
9.1 Manual updating
To update those files please do as follows:
f Download the appropriate update files (AntiVir Mobile Engine Pocket PC (Update),
AntiVir Mobile VDF Pocket PC (Update)) to your Desktop PC from the Avira website
http://www.avira.com/en/downloads/avira_antivir_mobile.html.
f Unpack these files with a suitable unpacker, e.g. WinZip and copy the files to the
ActiveSync directory on your desktop PC.
f If the synchronization process is not started automatically, start ActiveSync and
click on Synchronization.
f Your Pocket PC is synchronized and the search engine and/or the virus definition file

f Start AntiVir Mobile and the update will be automatically performed.
After having been started AntiVir Mobile automatically searches the
synchronization directory (\My Documents) for an update of the search
engine avearm.dll / aveintel.dll and the virus definition file mobile.vdf and if
necessary installs them.

9.2 Internet update
f Click on in the toolbar.
The updater tries to establish a connection to the web server. If no Internet
connection is available through Desktop PC or WLAN, the updater tries to
establish a connection to the Internet via GPRS.
If the connection to the web server is successful, AntiVir Mobile examines
whether new files are available. After a successful download session the files will
be installed. Otherwise you will receive a message that no new files are available.
If an update fails, you can read the reasons for this in the logfile.
f Click on Report to open the logfile.
