Output
Slots 8-14
Note: In addition to physically installing the D-16c card in the
DiGiRack expansion slots, the DiGiCo Sockets File must also
be updated to reflect the change. The Sockets File contains
setup and installation information for all hardware resources
currently installed in the system’s DiGiRack(s). Consult your
DiGiCo user documentation for information about editing
and maintaining the Sockets File. The DiGiCo console will not
recognize the Aviom D-16c card unless it is configured as part of
the Sockets File.
DIP Switch
The 10-position DIP switch on the D-16c card provides two separate
functions. Switches 1 through 8 are used for controlling the stereo
link status (used by Aviom personal monitoring devices) for the eight
possible audio channel pairs.
The last two switches (labeled 9 and 10) provide mode selection control
for the D-16c card operation and test settings. The D-16c card can be
either set up manually using the DIP switches (stereo link information is
user-set with the DIP switch) or software-controlled from the DiGiCo user
interface (stereo linking is set on the mixing work surface). DIP switches
number 9 and 10 provide this information to the console.

This diagram shows the DIP switch set for normal
host-based operation with no stereo links.
Note: Consult your DiGiCo user documentation for additional
information about host-based configuration and software
control of Aviom stereo link functions.
Mode Select Switches
Positions 9 and 10 of the DIP switch are used for card mode selection.
There are four possible switch combinations; two operational modes
and two test modes are provided. Select a mode before installing the
D-16c card in the DiGiRack.
The switch 9 and 10 combinations are:
• Off-Off (switch 9 and 10 in the down position) - Normal
card operation under host control; the position of DIP
switches 1 through 8 are ignored. Audio sent via A-Net
is muted until the host controller has been completely
booted.
• Off-On (switch 9 down, switch 10 up) - Normal card
operation with local stereo link control; the position of
DIP switches 1 through 8 affect stereo link status. Audio
sent via A-Net is muted until the host controller has been
completely booted.
• On-Off (switch 9 up, switch 10 down) - Debug/Test
Mode; Audio is sent to the A-Net port immediately when
power is applied.
Caution: This mode is reserved for test and development
purposes.
• On-On (switch 9 up, switch 10 up) - Test Mode; the
D-16c card generates a 1kHz test tone which is output
via A-Net.

Warning: Before switching the D-16c card to Test
!
Mode, lower the volume on any connected A-Net
devices to avoid sudden volume changes and/or
possible hearing damage.
Stereo Link Switches
Positions 1 to 8 of the DIP switch are used for manually setting the
stereo link status for an adjacent pair of channels (1-2, 3-4, etc.).
Stereo linking can be used with Aviom’s Personal Mixer products (the
A-16II Personal Mixer and the A-16R rack-mounted Personal Mixer)
for monitoring stereo pairs. Each switch controls a pair of adjacent
channels; see the list below. When the switch is set to the “On” position
(up), the channels are linked as a stereo pair. If the switch is in the “Off“
(down) position, the channels are not linked.
Stereo link changes can be made at any time. All connected A-Net
Pro16 Personal Mixers will instantly update and reflect the change.
Compatible A-Net devices that do not respond to stereo linking, such as
the line-level AN-16/o Output Module, will not be affected by changes
to the stereo link status.
The DIP switch 1 to 8 definitions are as follows:
• Switch 1 - controls channels 1 and 2
• Switch 2 - controls channels 3 and 4
• Switch 3 - controls channels 5 and 6
• Switch 4 - controls channels 7 and 8
• Switch 5 - controls channels 9 and 10
• Switch 6 - controls channels 11 and 12
• Switch 7 - controls channels 13 and 14
• Switch 8 - controls channels 15 and 16
10
The example above shows a configuration in manual
mode where channel pairs 3-4, 9-10, and 11-12 are
set for stereo operation. Switches are pushed upward
to activate stereo operation.

With the D-16c card properly installed and configured, you can now
connect A-Net based Pro16 monitoring and audio networking devices.
Connecting a Cat-5e cable from the A-Net output of the D-16c card to
the A-Net In on the first A-Net Pro16 device starts an A-Net distribution
network. No configuration is required for the Aviom devices.
A-Net Pro16 allows both serial (daisy chain) and parallel connection
topologies. Cat-5e cable connections can be up to 500 feet (150
meters) between each A-Net Pro16 device. Simply connect A-Net Out
to A-Net In on each device. Parallel connections can be made using
A-Net distribution hubs (such as the A-16D or A-16D Pro). There is no
limit on the number of A-Net Distributors or A-Net audio devices that
can be used in a system.
Series Connections
The diagram above shows a DiGiRack with one D-16c
A-Net card installed connected in series to a group of
A-16II Personal Mixers.
Any number of A-Net devices can be connected in
this manner. Cable runs can be up to 500 feet, 150
meters, between devices.

Parallel connections avoid some of the pitfalls of a serially-connected
system. Each A-Net device is directly connected to a data source
instead of depending upon the previous user in a daisy chain for data
delivery.
The diagram above shows a DiGiRack with one D-16c
A-Net card installed, connected to an 8-port A-Net
distributor. The A-16D Pro distributor shown allows up
to eight simultaneous parallel A-Net connections.
About Pro16 A-Net
A-Net is Aviom’s proprietary high-speed data transmission protocol
designed specifically to transport uncompressed high fidelity streaming
audio in real time over inexpensive Cat-5e cabling.
A-Net is based on the physical layer of Ethernet, which provides Pro16
A-Net a mature and robust base on which to build. However, Aviom
products are not compatible with off-the-shelf computer products
designed for Ethernet networks such as hubs and switches.
A-Net as implemented in Pro16 products transports sixteen channels
of digital audio (48kHz, 24-bit) from the D-16c card to each Personal
12
Page 15
Mixer or AN-16/o Output Module connected to the system. An unlimited
number of Pro16 A-Net devices can be connected to a system. A-Net’s
proprietary design delivers ultra-low latency in all configurations.
Cables Used With A-Net Devices
Aviom suggests using Category 5e (Cat-5e) or better cables when
making A-Net connections between devices. The Ethernet specification
requires the use of Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables for all
interconnections for best performance. All Aviom A-Net products require
unshielded Cat-5e cables. Category 6 (Cat-6) cables can also be used.
Do not use shielded Cat-5e cables with A-Net devices.
When purchasing Cat-5e cables, be sure to buy only standard Cat-5e
cables, not those sold as crossover cables. A crossover cable is used
for file transfer between two computers. A crossover cable is not
compatible with your Aviom equipment.
Cable Lengths
Aviom specifies a maximum cable run of 500 feet (150 meters) between
each A-Net device.
Your cable length performance will be affected by a number of factors
including the quality of the cables used, and the number of devices such
as cable couplers used or wall panel interconnections in use.
To go longer than the maximum specified distance A-Net allows (500
feet, 150 meters), an A-Net Distributor product can be used as a signal
repeater. Simply insert the A-16D or A-16D Pro into the A-Net stream
at the 500-foot point and the A-Net signal will be refreshed. Another
500 feet (150 meters) of cable can then be added. This process can
be repeated as many times as required to extend cables. In fact, any
Pro16 A-Net device can be used as a signal repeater.
For long distance applications, fiber optic cable can be used to span
distances up to 50 miles (80km) with the use of devices called media
converters. A media converter changes the Ethernet-based Pro16 A-Net
signal to fiber optic at the source location and then back to Cat-5 at
the destination. Several companies make fast Ethernet to fiber media
converters that can be used with your Aviom equipment.
Note: While the Category 5 cables and connectors used on
your Aviom products look like typical computer network
connections, do not connect computers, routers, or other home
and business networking equipment to your Aviom products.
