LANserver EX3 Overview
This chapter introduces the Avid Unity LANserver EX3 (LANserver EX3).
The LANserver EX3 is a low-cost alternative to Avid Unity MediaNetwork
that allows you to connect up to 20 Ethernet clients, and up to 6 Fibre Channel
clients with no external storage or up to 5 Fibre Channel clients with external
storage to a LANserver EX3.

Internal changes have been made to the LANserver ZX storage enclosure. The
new LANserver ZX enclosure is functionally the same as far as installation
and use is concerned. Since it is possible that at a later date Avid might find a
need to differentiate between the enclosures, the newer LANserver ZX3
enclosure will have a different Part Number and a sticker located on the upper
right front panel, labeled LEX-3. See the figure labeled, “LANserver EX3 with
Front Door Open” on page 21 for the location of the sticker.

Chapter 1 LANserver EX3 Overview
LANserver EX3 Hardware
The LANserver EX3 is a standalone system that runs the MediaNetwork
software. It is a dual-processor, rack-mount PC system that contains 17 hard
drives; 1 for the operating system and 16 250 GB drives for storing data.

The original LANserver EX3 shipped in January 2005 with 180 GB drives and
v3.5 software. The LANserver EX3 now ships with 250 GB drives and v3.6
software. You must have v3.6 software to use the 250 GB drives. There are
labels on the drives that show their size.

The front of the LANserver EX3 has a single door (see “LANserver EX3 with
Front Door Closed”). The door can be locked to prevent access to the internal
components while the LANserver EX3 is running.

The door covers the hard drives, the CD-ROM drive, the floppy drive, and the
Power and Reset buttons (see “LANserver EX3 with Front Door Open”).
When the door is open, it shows a list of the drives, by number, to simplify
drive removal and replacement.

Each of the hard drives has a lock and a green and amber LED on the left side
of the drive carrier (see “Hard Drive Carrier”). The lock can be used to secure
the drive carrier, preventing its removal from the LANserver EX3. The green
LED is on when a drive is receiving power from the LANserver EX3. The
amber LED flashes when a drive is in use.

The rear of the LANserver EX3 is where all of the cables are connected (see
“LANserver EX3 Rear Panel” on page 22). The rear panel contains the power
cord connectors; the power supply modules; the inputs for the keyboard,
mouse, and USB application key; the video connector; the Gigabit Ethernet
connector; and the dual-port Fibre Channel connections. The LANserver EX3
can have up to three dual-port Fibre Channel adapter boards.

Introduction to the LANserver EX3 Workgroup
Introduction to the LANserver EX3 Workgroup
The LANshare workgroup uses a LANserver EX3 to provide low-resolution
clients access to MediaNetwork workspaces (shared folders) over a fast
Ethernet network (see “LANshare LANserver EX3 Infrastructure”). The
LANshare workgroup provides high-resolution clients access to
MediaNetwork workspaces over a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop. The
LANserver EX3 allows clients to mount up to 21 MediaNetwork workspaces.
You can have several LANshare workgroups at your site, each accommodating
multiple Fibre Channel and Ethernet clients.

MediaNetwork workspaces, exported by the LANserver EX3, can be mounted
on Fibre Channel clients and Ethernet clients, and then accessed in the same
manner as local drives. Clients can then play, record, and edit media on the
MediaNetwork workspaces using a high-performance networking protocol
optimized by Avid for real-time media transfer. Real-time media reads and
writes are not possible unless the connected clients are running a qualified
Avid editing application and have the MediaNetwork client software installed.

editing applications and supported video resolutions for both Fibre Channel
and Ethernet clients.
The LANshare LANserver EX3 requires an application key (commonly called
a dongle). LANshare clients do not require LANshare application keys – their
licenses are handled separately by the LANserver EX3. However, the clients
do require application keys to run the Avid Composer Products software.
These application keys ship with that software.

Common LANserver EX3 Features
The LANserver EX3 uses the Windows® 2000 Server operating system with
Service Pack 4.
You can ensure the integrity of your data using the optional UnityRAID
your LANserver EX3 Protection creates a redundant configuration in which
files, written to protected workspaces, are duplicated on more than one drive.
This allows a protected workspace to be quickly repaired with no data loss if a
drive fails.
Installation Prerequisites
To set up a LANshare LANserver EX3, you need:
•A LANserver EX3
•The LANshare EX3 or MediaNetwork CD-ROM
•The Fibre Channel Support Software CD-ROM
•A fast Ethernet switch (a nonblocking Gigabit Ethernet-to10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet switch) that connects the LANserver EX3
to the Ethernet clients.
•Up to 20 Ethernet clients (Avid workstations running a qualified Avid
Composer Product) with 100BASE-T capable Ethernet connectivity. See

When expanding with a MEDIArray ZX (ZX3) chassis you must take the
following into consideration:
-Spares drives must reside in the chassis that they are intended to be
used in. You cannot repair a bad disk in the LANServer EX3 chassis
and use it as a disk in an attached MEDIArray ZX (ZX3) chassis or
vice versa.
-Once a disk has been added to the data set it must not be moved
between the LANserver EX3 and the MEDIArray ZX (ZX3) chassis.
Doing so corrupts the data on that disk.

This chapter describes how to install a LANserver EX3 and the Ethernet
switch to create a LANshare workgroup. The workgroup can be standalone or
connected to an in-house network.

Before you begin to install the LANshare LANserver EX3 hardware, do the
following:
•Unpack the LANserver EX3 kit (the LANserver EX3 and Ethernet
switch).
•Check the contents of the kit against the packing sticker on the outside of
each shipping box to confirm you have received all the components.
Chapter 2 Installing a LANserver EX3
Standard LANserver EX3 Components
The standard LANserver EX3 components include:
•A LANserver EX3 with 17 drives (sixteen 250 GB external for data and 1
internal for the operating system)
•A Gigabit Ethernet switch and Category 5 Ethernet cable

Installing the LANserver EX3 Hardware
Each LANserver EX3 ships with a Gigabit Ethernet adapter board and a SCSI
adapter installed. For fault-tolerance, the LANserver EX3 has three
autosensing power supply modules that set the voltage automatically for either
120 V or 220 V at 50 to 60 Hz.
Installing Additional Adapter Boards
Your LANserver EX3 might have shipped with several Fibre Channel adapter
boards that need to be installed. These boards allow you to attach additional
Fibre Channel clients.

Installing the LANserver EX3 Hardware
To install an additional board:
1. Open the LANserver EX3 front door.
2. Loosen the cover hold-down screw at the top center of the front panel.
3. Slide the cover back approximately 1-1/2 inches.
4. Lift the cover off of the enclosure.
5. Remove the board retainer bar screw on the right side near the back of the
enclosure.
6. Lift the right side of the board retainer bar up and pivot the bar to the left.
The board retainer bar must be almost vertical on the left side of the
enclosure to remove it.
7. Lift the board retainer bar out of the enclosure.
8. Select the slot where you want to install the new board.
9. Remove the screw holding the slot cover in place.

Make sure you are wearing a grounding wrist strap that is attached to the
metal of the enclosure before you continue. The boards are sensitive to
electrostatic discharge. Do not handle boards unless you are properly
grounded.
11. Locate the new board you are installing.
12. Remove the board from the antistatic bag.
13. Insert the board into the slot. Make sure the slot cover aligns correctly.
14. Push the board into the slot. Make sure the board is seated completely in
the slot.
15. Replace the slot cover screw to hold the new board in place.
Do not run the LANserver EX3 without the board retainer bar. The board
retainer bar ensures that the boards are seated properly in their slots.
Running the LANserver EX3 without the board retainer bar can cause
intermittent problems.
16. Reinstall the board retainer bar. Make sure the drive controller boards are
vertical. They must be in the left groove on the board hold-down arm
when looking at the LANserver EX3 from the front.
17. Align the board retainer bar and replace the board retainer bar screw.

18. To replace the cover, slide it onto the enclosure.
19. Secure the cover with the hold-down screw.
20. Close the LANserver EX3 front door.
The LANserver EX3 hardware can be set on a desktop or mounted in a rack.

Installing on a Desktop
The following sections describe how to install the LANserver EX3 and
Ethernet switch on a desktop.
Installing the LANserver EX3
To install the LANserver EX3 on a desktop:

1. Locate the rubber feet in the LANserver EX3 kit.
2. Attach one rubber foot to the bottom of the LANserver EX3 at each
corner.
3. Place the LANserver EX3 on the desktop. Leave adequate room at the
front for air circulation and access to the drives, and at the back for cables.
4. Place the monitor, keyboard, and mouse on the desktop next to the
LANserver EX3.
Do not place the monitor on top of the LANserver EX3. The enclosure is not
designed to support heavy external weight.

back of the LANserver EX3. Secure the connector with the thumbscrews
on the connector.
6. Attach the connector on the keyboard cable to the keyboard connector on

left of the connectors on the LANserver EX3.
7. Attach the connector on the mouse cable to the mouse connector on the
back of the LANserver EX3. The mouse connector is directly above the
keyboard connector.
Installing the Ethernet Switch
The following instructions describe how to connect the LANserver EX3 to an
Ethernet switch. See the latest version of LANserver EX3 release notes for the
supported Ethernet switches available at this time.
To install the Ethernet switch on a desktop:
1. Place the switch on top of the LANserver EX3. Leave adequate room at
the front for cables and at the back for air circulation.
2. Locate a 10-foot (3-meter) Category 5 Ethernet cable in the LANserver
EX3 kit.
3. Attach the connector on one end of the Ethernet cable to the Gigabit
Ethernet adapter board in slot 4 on the back of the LANserver EX3 (see

Installing in a Rack
The following sections describe how to install the LANserver EX3 and
Ethernet switch in a rack.
Installing the LANserver EX3 Rack-Mount Rails
When installing the LANserver EX3 in a rack, follow the instructions supplied
in the LANserver EX3 rail kit to install the rack-mount rails and ensuring:
•The rails do not interfere with the power strips, power cords, or other
cables at the back of the rack.
•The bottom of the LANserver EX3 is at the bottom of a U-alignment
space.
•The rails span two U-alignment spaces and use the middle two slots for
screws.
•The rails allow the LANserver EX3 to slide completely into the rack.
•The front edge of the slides are set back approximately 1/2 inch from the
rack front channels.

Mounting the LANserver EX3 on the rack-mount rails is a two-person
task. It is heavy, fits tightly into the rack rails, and the rails might need to
be spread slightly to fit the LANserver EX3 If you try to mount the
LANserver EX3 alone, you might damage the LANserver EX3 or injure
yourself.

To mount the LANserver EX3 on the rack-mount rails:
1. Slide the rack-mount rails out of the rack.
2. Lift the LANserver EX3 into position with one person on each side of the
rack.
3. Place the rail slides on the LANserver EX3 onto the extended rails.
4. Slide the LANserver EX3 into the rack. You should hear the slides click
onto the rails as you push the LANserver EX3 into the rack.
5. Attach the keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the LANserver EX3 by
selecting one of the following:
tIf you are using a standard keyboard, monitor, and mouse, connect
them as described in “Connecting a Standard Keyboard, Monitor, and
Mouse” on page 34.
tIf you are using a KVM switch with the keyboard, monitor, and

mouse:
1. Place the keyboard, monitor, and mouse on a suitable desktop or table
next to the LANserver EX3 rack.
You can also place the monitor on a shelf, and the keyboard and mouse on
a sliding tray in the rack. These items are optional. You can supply them
yourself or you can purchase them from Avid.
Do not place the monitor on top of the LANserver EX3. The enclosure is not
designed to support heavy external weight.
2. Attach the 15-pin connector on the monitor cable to the video port on the
back of the LANserver EX3 Secure the connector with the thumbscrews
on the connector.
3. Attach the connector on the keyboard cable to the keyboard connector on
the back of the LANserver EX3. The keyboard connector is at the bottom
left of the connectors on the LANserver EX3.
4. Attach the connector on the mouse cable to the mouse connector on the
back of the LANserver EX3. The mouse connector is directly above the
keyboard connector.
Installing the LANserver EX3 Hardware
Connecting to an Optional KVM Switch
This section assumes you already have your keyboard, monitor, and mouse
connected to the KVM switch. This switch might be on a desktop or mounted
in a rack. You need to supply cables that are compatible with the KVM you are
using.
To connect the LANserver EX3 to a KVM switch:
1. Locate a KVM cable (customer-supplied).
2. Attach the KVM cable connector to a free connector on the back of the
KVM switch. Secure the connector with the thumbscrews on the
connector.
3. Attach the 15-pin connector on the monitor cable to the video port on the
back of the LANserver EX3. Secure the connector with the thumbscrews
on the connector.
4. Push the keyboard cable connector into the keyboard connector on the
back of the LANserver EX3. The keyboard connector is at the bottom left
of the connectors on the LANserver EX3.
5. Push the mouse cable connector into the mouse connector on the back of
the LANserver EX3. The mouse connector is directly above the keyboard
connector.

Installing the Ethernet Switch Rack-Mount Bracket
Follow the instructions supplied with the Ethernet switch to install the rackmount bracket and ensure that:
•The bottom of the switch is at the bottom of a U-alignment space.

•There is adequate space to run and connect Ethernet cables to the front of
the switch.
Mounting the Ethernet Switch

Installing the LANserver EX3 Drives
To install a drive in the LANserver EX:
1. Locate the drives that came with your LANserver EX3.
2. Select one drive.
3. Push down on the left side of the handle and pull the handle forward from
the drive carrier.
4. Make sure the drive has the lock on the left or on the top before you begin
to slide the drive into the enclosure.

When you are installing drives in the LANserver EX3, begin the installation at
the bottom of a column of drives. Make sure the first drive you install is level
and flat as you insert it into the enclosure.
Do not force a drive into a slot. If you are having problems installing a
drive, check to make sure it is level and flat as you insert it into the
enclosure, that the drive carrier latch is open and at a 45 degree angle to
the drive carrier, and that the lock on the left of the drive carrier is in the
unlocked (down) position.
5. Slide the drive into the open drive slot in the LANserver EX3 until it stops
moving. Approximately 1/2 inch of the drive carrier should be outside the
LANserver EX3.

6. Push the purple handle into the drive carrier. This seats the drive in the
LANserver EX3. You’ll hear a click when the drive is fully seated and the
handle latches in place.
7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 for the remaining drives.
Connecting a MEDIArray ZX3 Drive Enclosure
The MEDIArray ZX3 drive enclosure lets you expand your storage capacity
by adding one enclosure to the LANserver EX3. When expanding with a
MEDIArray ZX3 chassis you must take the following into consideration:
•Spares drives must reside in the chassis that they are intended to be used
in. You cannot repair a bad disk in the LANServer EX3 chassis and use it
as a disk in an attached MEDIArray ZX3 chassis or vice versa.
•Once a disk has been added to the data set it must not be moved between
the LANshare and the ZX3 chassis. Doing so corrupts the data on that
disk.

The Avid MEDIArray ZX3 Setup Guide contains complete installation
instructions.
To connect the MEDIArray ZX3 drive enclosure to the LANserver EX:
1. You can mount the MEDIArray ZX3 drive enclosure on a desktop near the
LANserver EX3 or in a rack directly above or below the LANserver EX3.
Do not set the MEDIArray ZX3 drive enclosure directly on top of the
LANserver EX3. The LANserver EX3 is not designed to support heavy
loads placed on top of it.
2. Locate the 10-foot (3-meter) optical cable that came with the MEDIArray
ZX3 kit.
3. Attach the connector on one end of the cable to the INPUT connector on
I/O Module A on the back of the drive enclosure. Secure the optical cable
by firmly pushing the connector into the optical port.
4. Attach the connector on the other end of the cable to one of the optical
connectors on the back of the LANserver EX3. Secure the optical cable by
firmly pushing the connector into the optical port.

Installing the Application Key
To install the application key (dongle):
1. Locate the application key in the LANserver EX3 kit.
2. Attach the application key to the USB port on the back of the LANserver
EX3. Make sure the application key is seated completely in the port.
Connecting a LANshare Workgroup to an In-House
Network
To allow the clients in your LANshare workgroup to use other network
services, you can connect the LANshare workgroup to your in-house Ethernet
local area network (LAN).
If you have multiple LANshare workgroups, you can connect each Ethernet
switch directly to the LAN, or cascade the Ethernet switches and connect only
one of them to the LAN.

A connection to an in-house LAN is not a requirement to allow access by
Ethernet clients to MediaNetwork workspaces shared by the LANserver EX3.
Avid does not install, configure, or troubleshoot in-house LANs. If you are
having trouble with your LAN, consult your Information Services department
or your network vendor.
When you are connecting the LANserver EX3 to an in-house network,
make sure you use only Category 5 Ethernet cable. Using other cable
types can cause LANserver EX3 performance problems.
Connect the LANserver EX3 to an in-house network using the Ethernet
switch. Using the built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet connector on the
LANserver EX3 can cause an increase in login time for all the attached
Ethernet clients.
Turning On the LANserver EX3 Hardware
Making the Connection to the In-House Network
You can connect your Ethernet switch to your LAN through a port on the
Ethernet switch.
n
If you have multiple LANshare workgroups and would like to cascade the
switches to have a single Ethernet connection, contact your local Information
Services department.
To connect a single Ethernet switch to the site network:
1. Attach an Ethernet cable to a port on the Ethernet switch.
2. Attach the other end of the Ethernet cable to a suitable LAN jack.
Turning On the LANserver EX3 Hardware
You can now turn on power to your LANserver EX3 hardware. When you turn
on the power, it is order-dependent so the LANserver EX3 will see all of its
connected components.
To turn on the power for each component:
1. The Ethernet switch has no Power switch. It turns on when you plug the
power cord into a power outlet.
2. Turn on the Power switch for the monitor.

If the door on the LANserver EX3 is locked, locate one of the keys (supplied in
the LANserver EX3 kit) to unlock the front door.
n
3. Make sure the Power switch on each of the power supply modules is in the
on (|) position.
4. Open the front door on the LANserver EX3 and push the Power switch. It
is a black push-button switch at the top center of the LANserver EX3.
Watch the monitor. You should see the LANserver EX3 boot sequence
begin. Wait for the Windows operating system to load before you attempt
to use the LANserver EX3.
It takes approximately 3 minutes for the boot sequence to complete and
another minute for the Windows operating system to load.

Configuring the LANserver EX3 Using Windows
2000 Setup
The first time you boot your LANserver EX3, it runs the Windows 2000 Setup
utility to set several Windows operating system parameters. You’ll need to
have the Windows software kit available when you run the utility. It contains
the Windows license number you need to type in as part of the configuration.
To set up the Windows operating system:
1. The Windows 2000 Setup utility starts and the Windows 2000 Server
Setup dialog box opens showing the License Agreement screen.
2. Click the Agree radio button to accept the license.
3. Click Next. The Regional Settings screen appears.
tIf you are outside the United States, customize the system and locale
settings, and the keyboard for your location.
tIf you are in the United States, continue.
4. Click Next. The Personalize Your Software screen appears.

5. Type the system administrator’s name in the Name text box.
6. Type the company name in the Organization text box.
7. Click Next. The Your Product Key screen appears.
8. Type the Product Key from the Certificate of Authenticity in the Product
key text box. The certificate might be on the back of the Windows 2000 Server Getting Started Guide in the Windows software kit, or it might be
affixed to the LANserver EX3.
If the certificate is not already affixed to the LANserver EX3, remove it
from the Windows 2000 Server Getting Started Guide and affix it now.
9. Click Next. The License Modes screen appears.
10. Click the Per Server radio button and set the number of concurrent
connections to the number of Ethernet clients the application key allows.
For example, if your application key is set for 12 Ethernet clients, set this
value to 12.
11. Click Next. The Computer Name and Administrator Password screen
appears.
12. Type the name you want to use for the LANserver EX3 in the Computer
name text box.
Configuring the LANserver EX3 Using Windows 2000 Setup

Avid recommends you use an administrator password to prevent unauthorized
use of the Administrator account.
13. Type the password you want to use for the Administrator account in the
Administrator Password text box.
14. Confirm the password by retyping the password in the Confirm Password
text box.
15. Click Next. The Date and Time Settings screen appears. Set the correct
date, time, and time zone for the LANserver EX3.
16. Click the “Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes” check
box if your location observes daylight saving time.
17. Click Next. The Network Settings screen appears.
18. Click the Typical radio button. The network settings are site dependent
and will be set later during the LANserver EX3 configuration in Chapter
3.
19. Click Next. The Workgroup and Computer Domain screen appears.
20. Click No. The workgroup and domain settings are site dependent and will
be set later during the LANserver EX3 configuration in Chapter 3. The
Performing Final Tasks screen appears, followed by the Complete the
Windows 2000 Setup Wizard screen.
21. Click Finish. The Windows 2000 operating system is loaded.
Your LANserver EX3 hardware installation is complete. Continue with
Chapter 3 to configure the LANserver EX3 and to install the LANshare

Chapter 3 Configuring a LANshare LANserver EX
Setting Up the LANserver EX
Your LANserver EX3 ships with the Windows 2000 Server operating system,
Service Pack 4, and all the necessary drivers preinstalled. You do not need to
perform any configuration operations on these items.
You do need to configure the LANserver EX3 for the correct date and time,
computer name, and network properties so it will function properly at your
site. To set up the LANserver EX3, you should perform all the operations in
the following sections.

You need to correctly set the date, time, time zone, and daylight saving time
option on each LANserver EX3
If you just completed “Configuring the LANserver EX3 Using Windows 2000
Setup” on page 42, you can continue with “Specifying a Unique Computer
Name” on page 47.
To set the date, time, time zone, and daylight saving time option on a
LANserver EX:
1. Double-click the time in the taskbar. The Date/Time Properties dialog box
opens.
2. Set the date and time using the Date & Time tab.
3. Click the Time Zone tab.
4. Set the time zone for the location of the LANserver EX3 By default,
Windows 2000 sets the time zone to “(GMT - 8:00) Pacific Time (US &
Canada), Tijuana.”
5. Make sure the “Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes”
option is selected if your location observes daylight saving time.
6. Click OK to close the Date/Time Properties dialog box and save the
settings.
Specifying a Unique Computer Name
To specify a unique computer name by which clients identify your
LANserver EX:
1. Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, and select Properties.
The System Properties dialog box opens.
2. Click the Network Identification tab.
3. Click the Properties button. The Identification Changes dialog box opens.
4. Type the LANserver EX3 name in the Computer name text box.
5. Determine if you need to select the Domain or Workgroup in the
“Member of” section at the bottom of the dialog box. Contact your
network administrator for assistance.
6. Click OK.
7. Close all open windows and dialog boxes.
Setting Up the LANserver EX
IP Addressing Strategies When Connecting to a Network
If your LANserver EX3 and Ethernet clients are connected to your in-house
network, the LANserver EX3 and each client must be properly configured
with a unique, valid IP address and subnet mask.
Your site network administrator should determine how best to allocate IP
addresses for systems on your in-house network, bearing in mind the
following:
•You must assign a static IP address to the Gigabit Ethernet adapter on the
LANserver EX3 — the Ethernet clients are configured to locate the
LANserver EX3 using this address.
•You can assign static IP addresses to the Ethernet clients or use DHCP to
obtain them dynamically if you have a DHCP server on the network.
•However you assign the Ethernet client IP addresses, the LANserver EX3
and all clients must have addresses in the same subnet.

Configuring the LANserver EX3 Network Properties
You need to configure the network properties for each LANserver EX3 so it
can communicate with the network. Each LANserver EX3 has two possible
network connections: a Gigabit Ethernet adapter and a built-in 10/100BASE-T
adapter. You need to provide a static IP address and subnet mask for the
Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
To configure network properties for the Gigabit Ethernet adapter:
1. Right-click the My Network Places icon on the desktop, and select
Properties. The Network and Dial-up Connections dialog box opens.
2. Select View > Details. The window changes to show details about its
contents.
3. Locate the Local Area Connection that is identified as Alacritech
Accelerator.
4. Double-click this Local Area Connection’s icon. The Local Area
Connection Status dialog box opens.
5. Click the Properties button. The Local Area Connection’s Properties
dialog box opens.

6. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option.
7. Click the Properties button. The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties
dialog box opens.
8. Select the “Use the following IP address” option.
9. Type a unique IP address in the IP address text box (see “IP Addressing
Strategies When Connecting to a Network” on page 47), and press Enter.
The LANserver EX3 should fill in the subnet mask appropriately. If not,
type the appropriate subnet mask in the Subnet mask text box.
10. If necessary, type a gateway IP address in the Default gateway text box.
11. If necessary, type a Preferred and Alternate DNS server IP address in the
Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server text boxes.
12. Click the Advanced button. The Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box
opens.
13. Click the DNS tab.
14. If necessary, type a DNS name in the “DNS suffix for the connection” text
box.
15. Click OK to close each of the open dialog boxes and save the changes.
Installing the LANserver EX3 Software
16. Close all the remaining open windows and dialog boxes.
17. Click the Start button, and select Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows
dialog box opens.
18. Select Restart from the menu, and click OK. The LANserver EX3 reboots.
Installing the LANserver EX3 Software
The MediaNetwork software allows the LANserver EX3 to share
MediaNetwork workspaces. This software is supplied on the MediaNetwork
CD-ROM in the LANserver EX3 installation kit.
To install the MediaNetwork software on the LANserver EX:
1. Locate the MediaNetwork CD-ROM.
2. Insert the CD-ROM into the LANserver EX3 CD-ROM drive. The
CD-ROM is set to auto-start and opens the Avid Unity Installation
window. This takes approximately 30 seconds.
If the CD-ROM does not auto-start, you can start the installation manually
as follows:
a.Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. The My
Computer window opens.
b.Right-click the CD-ROM icon, and select AutoPlay. The Avid Unity
Installation window opens.
3. Click Product Installers. The screen changes to a list of available product
installers.
4. Click LANserver Components. The screen changes to a list of available
LANserver components.
5. Click Install LANserver. The InstallShield Wizard opens and displays the
Minimum Requirements screen.
6. Click Next. The screen changes to the Welcome screen.
7. Accept the default values presented by the InstallShield Wizard. When the
Setup Status screen appears, it shows a progress indicator while the
software is being installed.
8. On the InstallShield Wizard Complete screen, click “Yes, I want to restart
my computer now.”

9. Click Finish to complete installing the LANserver EX3 software, and
reboot the LANserver EX3

b.Expand Services and Applications.
c.Click Services. A list of services appears in the right section of the

d.Locate the Avid Unity PortServer service. It should have a Status of

Installing the Avid Billing Application
MediaNetwork supports the ability to supply other applications, such as
billing applications like ScheduALL
information about storage usage. The MediaNetwork billing software runs on
any Windows 2000 client and can be used with all MediaNetwork related
products; MediaNetwork workgroups and LANshare workgroups. See
Appendix E for information about installing and configuring the Avid billing
application.

Configuring the MediaNetwork Software
You need to configure the MediaNetwork software to establish a functioning
LANshare workgroup. This configuration requires that you:
•Create a drive set
•Create an allocation group
•Create one or more workspaces
•Create user accounts
While you are performing the configuration, you will need to refer to the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Management Guide for information about the
MediaNetwork configuration tools. You should also read the first two chapters
of the guide. They describe the MediaNetwork software and the tools.
Creating a Drive Set
The drive set defines the drives that the MediaNetwork software can use to
store data. Each MediaNetwork workgroup can have only one drive set.
To create a drive set:
1. Start the Setup Manager. See the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Management
2. Click Raw Drives in the left section of the window.

You can create your drive set with no spare drives or two spare drives. Having
spare drives allows you to perform online drive repairs if a drive fails. If you
are not running the optional UnityRAID protection software, you should
consider having spare drives.

Creating an Allocation Group
An allocation group defines how the drives in a drive set are partitioned to
store data. If you have drives of different sizes, they must be in separate
allocation groups.
To create an allocation group:
1. Open the Administration Tool. See the Avid Unity MediaNetwork
Management Guide for additional information about using the
Administration Tool.
2. Click the Allocation Groups tab.

3. Click the Partition Disk Set icon in the left section of the window. All of
the drives should appear in the right section of the window.
4. Select each of the drives by clicking the check box before the drive
number.
For best performance, Avid recommends you create a single allocation group
using all 16 drives. You can then create multiple workspaces within the
allocation group.
5. Click the New Group button. A dialog box opens asking if you are sure
you want to create the allocation group.
6. Click Yes. The allocation group is created.
7. Leave the Administration Tool running.
Creating Workspaces
Workspaces are locations to store and segregate data. You can allow users to
access some or all of the workspaces, and assign permissions for how each
user can access the data in a workspace.
Configuring the MediaNetwork Software

If your LANserver EX3 has the UnityRAID option, all new workspaces are
created with protection enabled. Avid recommends you leave your workspaces
protected. Protection creates a copy of the files you store in a workspace. The
file copy resides on different drives from the original file. When several clients
want to play the same file, the MediaNetwork software steers clients to either
the original or the copy of the file to provide maximum playback performance.
Protection also allows you to rebuild the data on a drive, if one of your drives
should fail.
To create a workspace:
1. Click the Workspace tab in the Administration Tool. See the Avid Unity
MediaNetwork Management Guide for additional information about using
the Administration Tool.
2. Click the turn-down arrow before Partition Disk Set. The allocation group
appears.
3. Click the Allocation Group icon and then click the New Workspace
button. A 1-GB workspace is created.
4. Click the turn-down arrow before the allocation group. The workspace
appears.
5. Click the workspace name, type the name you want for the workspace,
and press Enter. The workspace name changes.

6. Resize the workspace, to make it larger, by pressing the Alt key while
clicking the resize handle and dragging it to the right.
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 to create as many workspaces as you might need.
8. Leave the Administration Tool running.
You can create as many workspaces as you need to support different projects.
Due to the physical restrictions of drive letters, the LANserver EX3 can only
mount a maximum of 21 workspaces for Ethernet client use.

Creating User Accounts
User accounts allow individual users, or groups of users, access to the
LANshare workgroup. These accounts allow users to mount or map
MediaNetwork workspaces on their Avid workstations.
To create a user account:
1. Click the User tab in the Administration Tool. See the Avid Unity
MediaNetwork Management Guide for additional information about using
the Administration Tool.
2. Click the turn-down arrow before Partition Disk Set. The allocation group
appears.
3. Click the turn-down arrow before the allocation group. The workspaces
appear.
4. Click the New User button in the right section of the window. A new user
is created and appears in the column head area.
5. Double-click the user name. The Change User Name dialog box opens.
6. Type the desired user name in the text box and click OK. The user name
changes.

7. Click the user name and then click the Set Password button. The Set
Password dialog box opens.
8. Type the desired password in the text box and click OK. The user’s
password is saved.
9. Click the permissions below the user name for each workspace, and set
them accordingly to No Access (N), Read (R), or Read/Write (R/W).
10. Repeat steps 4 to 9 for each user.
11. Close the Administration Tool.

Mounting Workspaces
On a LANshare LANserver EX3, you can mount some MediaNetwork
workspaces to specific drive letters. The AISPortServer.ini file is used to
establish the static mapping between workspaces and drive letters.
To configure the AISPortServer.ini file:
1. Navigate to D:\Program Files\Avid Technology\AvidUnity\
PortServerStartup.
2. Open the AISPortServer.ini file using a text editor, such as WordPad.
3. Add one line for each workspace you want to map to a specific drive
letter. Each line should use the format X: workspace, where X is the drive
letter and workspace is the name of the workspace to mount. Workspace
names are case sensitive and can have no spaces in the names (see
“AISPortServer.ini File Entries”).

The AISPortServer.ini file cannot mount workspaces that contain spaces in

Sharing MediaNetwork Workspaces
The LANshare LANserver EX3 software includes the Avid Unity PortServer
service that automatically mounts and shares MediaNetwork workspaces. The
workspaces are mounted in response to mount requests received from the
Connection Manager application on Ethernet clients. The service can mount
up to 21 workspaces, the maximum available number of drive letters.
The Avid Unity PortServer service starts automatically when you boot the
LANserver EX3 On startup (and every 60 seconds thereafter), the service
reads the LANshare configuration information to obtain workspace, user, and
access privilege information. It then uses this information to remount and
reshare workspaces on the LANserver EX3 with the correct access privileges.
See the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Management Guide for more information
about sharing workspaces, user accounts, and access privileges.
Allowing Network Installation of Ethernet Client
Software

The Windows Ethernet client software installer is included as part of the
LANserver EX3 installation (in D:\Program Files\Avid Technology\
AvidUnity\Ethernet Client Setup), if you accepted the defaults during the
installation. If you share the Ethernet Client Setup folder you (or other users
with the appropriate access permissions) can install the Windows Ethernet
client software on any connected Windows Ethernet client over the network
without using the MediaNetwork CD-ROM.
To share the Ethernet Client Setup folder to allow network installation of
the Windows 2000 Ethernet client software:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to D:\Program Files\Avid Technology\AvidUnity.
3. Right-click the Ethernet Client Setup folder, and select Sharing. The
Ethernet Client Setup Properties dialog box opens.
4. Select the “Share this folder” option.

If you are upgrading to MediaNetwork v3.6, make sure that the LANserver
is properly configured to support the language that you select. The

English and European Languages
English and European languages (French, Italian, German, and Spanish)
do not need to make any changes before upgrading to MediaNetwork v3.6.
All the necessary language support is already supplied as part of the

must add language support before upgrading to MediaNetwork v3.6. The

Microsoft Global IME 5.02 for Chinese (Simplified) - with Language
Pack) from the Web site.
2. Stop the File Manager software using the Monitor Tool.
3. Double-click the language install icon (for example, scmondo.exe).
The Installer starts and installs the language support.

When you upgrade your LANserver EX to MediaNetwork v3.6, by default
the file system metadata translates all characters based on their MacRoman
or ANSI-Asian encodings (depending on the language you selected during
the upgrade) to Unicode encoding. After upgrading the LANserver EX to
MediaNetwork v3.6, you might see some characters in the folder and file
names that appear incorrectly. These are characters that have a different
operating system encoding than the encodings used by Avid Composer
Products.
International Character Support for Windows 2000 or Windows XP Clients
International Character Support for Windows 2000 or
Windows XP Clients
If you are plan to use your Windows client with international characters,
you need to configure the client to support these characters.
To set up a Windows 2000 or Windows XP client for international
character support:
1. Click the Start button and select Settings > Control Panel. The Control
Panel window opens.
2. Double-click Regional Options. The Regional Options dialog box
opens.
3. Click the General tab. The General options appear.
4. In the “Language settings for the system” area, select the language that
you want to use. You might need the Windows 2000 Professional
installation CD-ROM to install the language software.
5. Click the Set Default button. The Select System Locale dialog box
opens.
6. Select the same language that you selected in step 4.
7. Click OK to close the Select System Locale dialog box and save the
changes.
8. In the “Settings for the current user” area, select the same language
that you selected in step 4.
9. Click OK to close the Regional Options dialog box and save the
changes.

International Character Set Support
MediaNetwork contains support for international characters by migrating
the MediaNetwork metadata from a multibyte character string (MBCS)
encoding to the Unicode character encoding. This allows you to use
international characters in your MediaNetwork folder and file names.
When you install MediaNetwork on your File Manager, all of the folder
and file names in your MediaNetwork workspaces will be converted to
Unicode.

International characters can currently only be used for folder and file
names. They cannot be used for computer names, user names, passwords,
or workspace names.
Make sure that you follow the instructions for adding language
support to the File Manager explained in “International Character
Support for Windows 2000 or Windows XP Clients” on page 61. You
can lose some or all of your data if you upgrade the File Manager
before you install the language support.
European Languages
In MediaNetwork Release 3.1 and earlier, folder and file names for
European languages (such as French, Italian, German, or Spanish) created
by Macintosh and Windows clients using Avid Composer Products
software used a character encoding (MacRoman) that is not native to the
Windows operating system. Windows clients that used applications other
than Avid Composer Products software created folder and file names using
a character encoding (ANSI) that is native to the Windows operating
system.
The MacRoman and ANSI character encodings function in the same
manner for 7-bit ASCII characters (such as a–z, A–Z, and 0–9), but there
are differences for characters outside the ASCII character set. They each
contain characters that do not appear in the other encoding.

In MediaNetwork v3.2 and later, all Macintosh and Windows clients use
the Unicode character encoding. This character encoding is common to
both clients, but has differences from the language specific character
encodings. For a list of checks that you need to make before upgrading to
MediaNetwork v3.6, see the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Version 3.3 Upgrade Notes.
Avid supplies two HTML files (MacRoman_not_in_ANSI.htm and
ANSI_not_in_MacRoman.htm) with these release notes (in the Documents
folder on the MediaNetwork CD-ROM). One lists ANSI characters that do
not appear in the MacRoman character set. The other lists MacRoman
characters that do not appear in the ANSI character set. These files will
help you determine characters that might not convert properly during the
MediaNetwork upgrade. You will need to set your Web browser to display
Unicode characters to view these files.

Invalid Characters
Macintosh and Windows clients and some language kits allow and display
characters in different ways. This can create problems as you share media
among several clients with different operating systems. To minimize file
sharing problems, you should observe the following recommendations:
•Create workspace names with no spaces, periods, or semicolons in
their names. If you need to separate two words in a workspace name,
use an underscore instead of a space or period.
Do not use the Japanese Yen (¥) symbol in the ASCII character set. The
client might convert the symbol to a backslash.
Do not use the Y-acute (ý or Ý) and Y-diaeresis (ÿ or Ÿ) characters. Some
clients do not recognize the Y-acute character. Some clients might not
display the Y-diaeresis character correctly.

Language Support
MediaNetwork workgroups can support only one language (such as French
or Chinese) and ASCII characters. All clients connected to the workgroup
must use the same language.
Normalization
All folder and file names are stored by the File Manager using the Unicode
UTF-8 character set. As files and folders are requested by a client, the
client converts their names from UTF-8 to a character set appropriate for
the client. These character sets are:
•Windows clients convert to the UTF-16 character set.
•Mac OS 9 clients convert to the MacRoman character set.
•Mac OS X clients use the UTF-8 character set without any conversion.
International Character Set Support
Asian Language Support
When you use an Asian double-byte operating system, the following
restriction applies: If you use ASCII characters to name bins, projects, tapes, or other Avid elements, use single-byte characters. If you use
double-byte characters, the characters might appear with extra space
between them and the names might not be recognizable by other clients.
Operating systems that use a double-byte character system usually allow
the user to choose between single-byte ASCII characters or double-byte
ASCII characters. If you have a choice, use single-byte characters when
entering ASCII text.

Chapter 5 Troubleshooting
Using the ping and tracert Commands
Ethernet networking is the backbone for the LANserver EX3 workgroup. If
your Ethernet network is not performing properly, it will affect your
workgroup. The following sections describe how to use two commands, ping
and tracert, to troubleshoot your network.
ping
You can use the ping command to confirm that the physical and logical
aspects of your network are configured correctly. Physical aspects include
network interface card, cables, and Ethernet switches. Logical aspects include
IP addresses, subnet masks, and routing.
ping works by sending a packet over the network from an originating host to a
destination host. The destination host receives the packet and sends a response
packet over the network to the originating host. If the originating host receives
the response packet, it is a good indication that the network is configured
correctly.

You can use many options with ping. This section discusses two types of ping
syntax:
ping [System Name]
where [System Name] is the network name of the remote system to which
you are testing connectivity
or
ping [IP Address]
where [IP Address] is the IP address of the remote system to which you
are testing connectivity.
To run the ping command:
1. Open an MS-DOS® command prompt window.
2. At the command line, type the ping command (for example,
ping 192.168.10.5
).
Using the ping and tracert Commands
The ping result should resemble the following:
Reply from 192.168.10.5: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=255
Reply from 192.168.10.5: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=255
Reply from 192.168.10.5: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=255
Reply from 192.168.10.5: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=255
Four responses of "Reply from…" indicate the network is configured
correctly and the originating and destination hosts can see each other on
the network.
If any one of the responses in the ping result says:
Request timed out.
or
Destination host unreachable.
it indicates the network is not configured correctly or there are other
network problems. Some items that can cause network problems are:
•Bad, loose, or incorrectly connected cables
•An incorrectly configured IP address or subnet mask on a local or
remote system
tracert
•Excessive network traffic
While ping can test for connectivity between two network hosts, tracert (short
for “trace route”) can verify the network path that the data uses to travel
between the two hosts.
Because Avid Composer Products applications are data intensive, it is
important that large amounts of data be transferred between the
LANserver EX3 system and its clients in a timely fashion. An incorrectly
configured network might get the data to its destination, but be too slow for
your application to work effectively.
You can use the tracert command to confirm that the data is traveling along an
optimal path. In a LANshare EX3 workgroup, the LANserver EX3 system and
its clients should send traffic directly to each other. Routers should not be used
to direct traffic between them.

Chapter 5 Troubleshooting
It is possible for network traffic to take one path going to a system and a
different path coming back. Therefore, it is important to run tracert from both
the LANserver EX3 system and its clients to test the data path in both
directions.
As with ping, you can use many options with tracert. This section discusses
two types of tracert syntax:
To run the tracert command:
1. Open an MS-DOS command prompt window.
2. At the command line, type the tracert command (for example,
tracert [System Name]
where [System Name] is the network name of the remote system to which
you are testing connectivity
or
tracert [IP Address]
where [IP Address] is the IP address of the remote system to which you
are testing connectivity
tracert 192.168.10.5

an optimal route.
The tracert result should resemble the following:
Tracing route to [remote system name or IP address] over a
maximum of 30 hops:
1 10 ms <10 ms <10 ms [remote system name or IP address]
Trace complete.
If your network is configured correctly, the tracert result will show only
one entry and then indicate that the trace is complete. More than one entry
indicates that the traffic is going through a router, which significantly
affects performance.
If your tracert result shows more than one entry, most likely there is an
incorrect IP address or subnet mask configuration on the local host.
LANserver EX3 Is Whistling
Problem: The LANserver EX3 is making a whistling sound.
Possible Cause: One of the power supply modules might have failed. Perform
the following checks:
•Make sure all the power supply modules are plugged in.
•Make sure each power supply module has a green LED lit.
•Make sure the power supply module switch is turned on.
•Make sure both power cords are plugged into an active electrical circuit.
•Make sure one of the electrical circuits has not overloaded and tripped the
circuit breaker. If the power cords are plugged into different circuits,
check both circuits for a tripped circuit breaker.
•Press the red button near the top center on the back of the LANserver EX3
The whistling should stop.
LANserver EX3 Is Whistling

The LANserver EX3 can continue to run if one of the power supply modules is
turned off or fails, or if one of the power cords is not plugged in.
•Contact Avid Customer Support for further assistance and possible power
supply module replacement.
Checking That the Operating System Is Properly
Installed
The LANserver EX3 runs the Windows 2000 Server operating system with
Service Pack 4. Avid ships each LANserver EX3 with the Windows 2000
Server, Service Pack 4. If you are concerned that the operating system might
not be appropriately installed, you can check it by following the procedure in
this section.

Setting Virtual Memory
Virtual memory extends the physical memory (RAM) in your LANserver EX3
using a portion of the hard drive as a location to move unused data from

Avid ships each LANserver EX3 with virtual memory already configured. If
you are installing a new LANserver EX3, continue with “Installing the
LANserver EX3 Software” on page 49. If you are rebuilding the LANserver
EX3, continue by setting the virtual memory.
The LANserver EX3 requires you to allocate a minimum of 1536 MB of
virtual memory space on the C: partition of the internal (system) hard drive.
This provides adequate space for normal LANserver EX3 operation.

Removing a Drive
To remove a drive from the LANserver EX:

If you are removing a drive on a LANshare LANserver EX3, have all the
Ethernet clients or Media Servers stop their work and unmount any
LANserver EX3 workspaces before you continue.
1. Start the Setup Manager and select File Manager > Stop File Manager. A
message box opens asking if you are sure you want to stop the File
Manager.
2. Click Yes. A dialog box opens while the File Manager is stopping.
3. Click Data Drive Set in the left section of the window and select the drive
you want to remove from the Data Drive Set by clicking it.
4. Select Drives > Identify. On the front of the LANserver EX3, the LED for
the drive flashes. Note the drive location and number.
5. Click the Start button, and select Shut Down. The Shut Down Windows
dialog box opens.
6. Select Shut down from the menu, and click OK. The Windows operating
system shuts down and turns off the LANserver EX3 This takes
approximately 1 minute.
7. Open the door on the front of the LANserver EX3 The door is unlocked
when the key slot is in the 12-o’clock position. If the door is locked, locate
the key to unlock the door.
8. Check to make sure the drive you want to remove is unlocked. The drive is
locked when the key slot is in the 9-o’clock position.

9. Push down on the left side of the handle (you’ll hear a click when it is
free) and pull the handle forward. This unlatches the drive and slides it
approximately 1/2 inch out of the LANserver EX3
10. Grasp the drive carrier and slide it out of the LANserver EX3

Replacing a Drive
To replace a drive in the LANserver EX:
1. Locate the replacement drive. Make sure the handle on the drive carrier is
unlatched and pulled out as far as possible.
2. Slide the drive into the open drive location in the LANserver EX3 until it
stops moving. Approximately 1/2 inch of the drive carrier should be
outside the LANserver EX3
3. Push the handle into the drive carrier. This seats the drive in the
LANserver EX3 You’ll hear a click when the drive is fully seated and the
handle latches in place.
4. Start the LANserver EX3 by pushing the Power switch on the front of the
LANserver EX3
Resetting the LANserver EX3 Power Supply
Modules
If the LANserver EX3 does not start when you press the Power switch, the
power supply modules might have tripped to prevent them from an over-power
condition.
To reset the power supply modules:
1. Turn the Power switch on the power supply module to the off (O) position.
2. Wait 10 seconds.
3. Turn the Power switch on the power supply module to the on (|) position.
Troubleshooting a LANshare Workgroup
The following sections describe how to troubleshoot some common
LANserver EX3 issues.
Understanding Disk Error Logging and the DEAN Light
Avid Unity MediaNetwork logs the following three new disk errors from IDE
disks located in MEDIArray ZX(3) and LANserver EX3 systems:

What to Do When You See the New Errors
When viewing the new errors you need to determine if you need to replace the
disk reporting the errors. You should use the following explanations as a
guide:
•Long Read or Write Command Times - A block is rewritten whenever
there is a long read or write. This has been shown to resolve the issue in
many cases. Therefore, the occasional long read or long write can be
safely ignored. However, if you see a disk that is reporting more that three
long command times in a week, it should be replaced.

It is possible that once a long I/O happens, other requests to that drive are
also held off with a long I/O message. Make sure that the three long I/Os over
the week are separate long I/Os, and not just multiple reports of the same long
I/O from the same drive.
•STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR - This is a serious hardware error and
the disk should be replaced.
If you take the disk offline from the controller manually, you might see the
STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR error.
Avid Composer Products Software Has Performance Issues
Problem: The Avid Composer Products application you are running is
performing slowly or, potentially, not running.
Possible Cause: The LANserver EX3 and the client with the performance
problems are not on the same subnet mask, forcing the data to go through
additional routing while being transferred between the two systems. If the data
transfer is slow enough, it can cause the Avid Composer Products application
to perform poorly or to stop functioning.
Data transfer between the LANserver EX3 and its clients must occur directly.
You can use the tracert utility to verify whether or not the data transfer uses a
direct, optimal path. See “tracert” on page 69 for more information.

You can also test the throughput from the client to the LANserver EX3 using
the Avid Performance Meter. See Appendix B for information on using the
Avid Performance Meter.
Workspaces Are Not Available to an Ethernet Client
Problem: No workspaces are available for mounting on an Ethernet client.
Possible Cause: The user account, under which the user has logged in to the
Ethernet client, does not exist either in the MediaNetwork Administration Tool
or the LANserver EX3 Windows domain. For more information on properly
setting up user accounts, see the Avid Unity MediaNetwork Management Guide.
Possible Cause: The user account does not have permissions to mount
workspaces.
Macintosh Client Cannot Mount Shared Workspaces
Problem: A Macintosh Ethernet client cannot mount workspaces shared by
the LANserver EX3
Possible Cause: Macintosh clients cannot connect to the LANserver EX3
without installing additional software (DAVE
Windows network. DAVE is included with the MediaNetwork software and
must be correctly configured to function within a LANshare workgroup. See

Installing a LANserver EX3 in a Rack
The LANserver EX3 and Ethernet switch can be installed in a rack. When you
install them in a rack you must take the following precautions:
•Elevated Operating Ambient Temperature — When installed in a
closed or multiunit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of
the rack environment might be greater than the room ambient
temperature. Therefore, consideration should be given to installing the
equipment compatible with the manufacturer's maximum ambient
temperature.

•Reduced Airflow — Installation of the equipment in a rack should be
such that the amount of airflow required for safe operation of the
equipment is not compromised.
•Mechanical Loading — Mounting of the equipment in a rack should be
such that the amount of airflow required for safe operation of the

of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that overloading of

Avid Performance Meter is a utility that allows you to validate your LANshare

applications can achieve while accessing MediaNetwork workspaces shared
through an Ethernet switch. The Avid Performance Meter can also test the
throughput from local disks and any other shared storage to which a client has
access.

least one MediaNetwork workspace or local drive.

To change the default test settings:

Transfer SizeThis option controls the amount of data the test utility attempts to

measurements. For example, at any given data rate, a smaller file
is opened and closed more often than a larger file, creating more
overhead.

This option changes the way that the Path to Test parameter is
used and is intended for advanced users only. When you select
this option, the Path to Test parameter must specify a full path,

Read tests.
The Avid Performance Meter creates the file if it does not exist
and deletes it at the end of testing. For this reason, the named file
should not already exist unless you want it to be deleted when the
test is completed. With this option selected, you can run the Avid
Performance Meter on multiple clients simultaneously and
supply the same file name.
This allows the Avid Performance Meter, running on multiple
clients, to read a common file. (The file is created as needed, and
the last Avid Performance Meter to stop deletes the file.)
Starting and Stopping a Test
You start and stop the currently configured test using the Start and Stop
buttons.
To start the currently configured test:
tClick the Start button in the Control area of the Avid Performance Meter
window.
The test runs for the specified duration and then stops automatically. The
elapsed time a test has been running and the remaining time are displayed
in the Control area. If you selected the Loop option in the Avid
Performance Meter Settings dialog box, the test runs indefinitely. In this
case, the word LOOP appears in the Time Remaining display in the main
window.
To stop the currently running test:
tClick the Stop button in the Control area of the Avid Performance Meter
window.

Interpreting the Test Results
This section contains information to help you interpret your test results
displayed in the Avid Performance Meter window.
Average Rate Calculation
The average data rate is calculated over the duration of the test. This
calculation includes the time the utility requires to open and close the test files,
so the test file size (which you can configure for custom tests) might affect the
overall measured throughput.
Also, if the throughput is slow as the test is starting, this might be reflected in
the average rate. For example, if the target bandwidth is 4.0 MB/s, the actual
average rate calculated at the conclusion of the test might be 3.98 or 3.99
MB/s.
Performance Graph
The graph of results over time can help experienced users obtain information
about system performance.

Items to look for include:
•Trends — Does the system perform at a consistent rate over time? Is there
an upward or downward trend in performance measured over time? If you
do notice a trend, it might be helpful to perform testing over a longer
period of time to determine if the trend continues over longer durations or
if a recurring pattern emerges.
•Patterns — Is there a momentary drop in performance that occurs at
consistent or varied intervals? Patterns can emerge as a result of
implementation details and the configuration of a particular system (for

Interpreting the Test Results
Measurement Strategy
Throughput measurements are plotted periodically (every n seconds) and
represent a snapshot of performance at the time of the plot. This is done to
limit the amount of data that is plotted, which otherwise could include a very
large number of data points. As a result, the performance graph could miss a
momentary drop, increase, or a peak in performance that occurs between plot
points. The average rate calculation reflects the impact of such a dip or spike.

Upgrading from MediaShare F/C
If you are currently using MediaShare F/C as your shared storage solution,
you can connect these clients to a LANshare workgroup and copy your
existing project and data files to the LANserver EX3 storage. When your data
is copied, you can disconnect the MediaShare F/C cables and work exclusively
from the LANserver EX3 storage.

Connecting MediaShare F/C Clients to a LANshare
Workgroup
When you are copying data from a MediaShare F/C workgroup to a LANshare
workgroup, you need to have one or more clients connected directly to both
workgroups. This requires an Ethernet connection to LANshare and a Fibre
Channel connection to the MediaShare F/C hub (see Figure ).
