Avid recommends that you read all the installation instructions
thoroughly before installing the Compaq W8000 system into your rack
enclosure.
This optional rack-mount kit for the Compaq W8000 system is
comprised of the Compaq rack-mount kit and a rack-shelf added to
the kit by Avid. Install the rack-mount kit before making any
connections to the system. The Compaq W8000 system typically
requires five rack units with one additional rack unit for the rack-shelf.

Part 0130-05337-01 Rev. B
The rack-mount kit includes a new front bezel that secures the
Compaq W8000 to your rack enclosure. The new rack-mont bezel does not
include the two USB connectors, the microphone jack, and the headphone jack
that are in the desktop version of the bezel. These connections are still
available on the back of the system.
Although Compaq provides a rack-mount kit for the Compaq W8000,
Avid has modified the kit to include a rack-shelf making the kit more
universal. This document provides instructions for the Compaq
rack-mount kit and the parts added to the kit by Avid.
This procedure requires two people for the complete installation.
These installation instructions use the following special symbols and
conventions:

and strong suggestions.
A caution means that a specific action you take could cause harm to
your computer or cause you to lose data.
A warning describes an action that could cause you physical harm.
Follow the guidelines in the manual or on the unit itself when
handling electrical equipment.

Installing the Rack Nuts
Rack nuts are provided in the kit for those rack enclosures that do not
have threaded holes. Rack nut clips position the rack nuts at the holes
of the rack and are used to secure the rack components in place. Install
the rack nuts where the rack-shelf and front bezel will secure to the
rack enclosure. If your rack enclosure has threaded holes, skip this
procedure.
To attach the rack nuts to the rack enclosure:
1. On the inside of the rail, hook one of the rack nut clips through the
desired hole, see Figure 1.
2. Squeeze the nut housing and hook the opposite clip of the rack nut
in the hole.

Installing the Rack-Shelf
You must first install the rack-shelf in your rack enclosure before you
can install the Compaq W8000. The rack-shelf requires one EIA rack
3
/
inches of rack space. Once the shelf is secured in the
4
w
unit (1 U), or 1
rack, the Compaq W8000 rests on top of the shelf and is also secured.
To ensure the stability of the rack enclosure, install the rack
components in the rack enclosure starting from the bottom.
To attach the rack-shelf to the rack enclosure:
1. Locate the rack-shelf and position the shelf just below where you
want to have the Compaq W8000 located in the rack.
2. Select the lowest position in the rack where you can mount the
rack-shelf and Compaq W8000. Position the rack-shelf so that the
bottom of the shelf is at the baseline of a U-alignment position (see
Figure 2).

securing it.
3. Position the front of the rack-shelf flush against the outside of the
front mounting rail. Align the holes in the rack-shelf with the
holes in the front mounting rail (see Figure 3).
4. From the front of the rack enclosure, insert the screws (with teflon
washers) through the front mounting rail and tighten.

Installing the Tower-to-Rack Conversion Kit
Avid’s instructions for the Compaq Tower-to-Rack Conversion Kit
includes information on the components that Avid has added, and
excludes steps for Compaq components that are not used by Avid.
Avid systems must use the rack-shelf (see “Installing the Rack-Shelf”
on page 4). These instructions have been specifically tailored for Avid
systems.

Removing the Side Access Panel
Before removing the access panel, ensure that the Compaq W8000 is
c
turned off, and all cables are disconnected from the back of the
system.
To remove the side access panel:
1. Loosen the four rear panel thumbscrews (see Figure 5).
2. Slide the side access panel back, then off.

Replacing the Diskette Drive
You must replace the existing diskette drive with the diskette drive in
the rack-mount kit. The diskette drive in the rack-mount kit provides a
longer eject button. The longer button needs to extend beyond the new
front bezel.

3. Secure the diskette drive with the screws removed from the
original diskette drive.
Use only 5mm-long screws. Longer screws can damage the internal
c
components of the diskette drive. Be sure cables are placed in their
original locations during the reassembly process. Improper cable
placement can damage the system.
Removing the Front I/O Assembly Module
To remove the front I/O assembly module:
1. Remove the four screws securing the front I/O assembly module

3. Disconnect the power-on ribbon cable from the I/O board.
4. Remove the front I/O assembly module from the chassis.
5. Disconnect the power-on ribbon cable from the system board.
Most Avid systems will have expansion boards and a fan assembly installed

that might need to be removed to gain access to the power-on connector on the
system board. For instructions on removing the fan assembly and information
on your system’s expansion board slot configuration, see your Avid Product
Setup Guide.

Installing the Compaq W8000 into the Rack
The final process is to place and secure the Compaq W8000 system
into the rack enclosure.
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment, at
w
least two people are needed to install the Compaq W8000 into a rack
safely.
To install the Compaq W8000 system into the rack enclosure:
1. Position the Compaq W8000 system horizontally and place it on
the rack-shelf (see Figure 11).
2. Slide the Compaq W8000 system completely into the rack
enclosure.
c
Be sure to keep the Compaq W8000 flat on the rack-shelf when
securing it to the rack. Tilting the system could result in damage to
the system.
