Expanding an S6 System iii

Part I: Introduction

Chapter 1: Introduction

This guide provides instructions for disassembling a Pro Tools® | S6 in order to move or expand the system.

Important

Before you begin:
• Make sure you have a padded tabletop or other flat surface nearby to place components and modules as they are removed.
• While disassembling, be sure to keep all fasteners and components organized, to simplify re-assembly. To simplify fastener organization, print the pages of assembly.
• Make sure you have a copy of the S6 Installation Guide available to refer to when re-assembling the system. A printed version is included with the S6 Master Module, and you can download the most recent edition from your Avid account or from our Knowledge Base (see
• Never attempt to lift or move an assembled S6 desktop system if it is five or more chassis in width (32 or more faders) to avoid risk of damage to the frame. If you need to move a five chassis-or-wider S6 system that does not include Legs, you must partially disassemble the frame so that no section is more than four chassis in width. If your system does include Legs, partially disassemble the frame so that no section is more than four chassis in width and remove those sections from the leg frame.
• Also, do not attempt to move or lift any chassis by the Side Covers, Bolster , or Rear Panels (they can break). Move or lift while holding on to the metal chassis (frame) instead, or remove them as described in this guide.

Overview of Disassembly for Moving, Customizing or Expanding a System

S6 systems can be customized by adding hardware options, disassembled for moving, and expanded by adding modules or chassis.
Customizing a System with Hardware Options
You can add any of the following hardware options to S6 M10 or M40 systems:
• Instructions for installing a Keyboard Tray, SpeakerDeck, Script Tray, VESA Mount, Frame Panel Large Center or other Fill Panel are included with the hardware option.
• You only need to disassemble a frame if you are adding new chassis and modules, a Producers Desk, Leg Frame, Leg Frame Extension, or Leg Frame Join Module to an existing system. Follow the instructions in this guide to disassemble the frame as necessary, then do the following to re-assemble the system:
• For the Producers Desk and Leg Frame, refer to the S6 Installation Guide for assembly instructions.
• To add a Leg Frame Extension or Leg Frame Join Module to an existing system, use the instructions in this guide to disassemble the frame and add the Leg Frame Extension or Join Module.
Moving a System
Before moving any system that is five or more chassis in width, the frame must be partially disassembled so no section is more than four chassis in width. Use the instructions in this guide to determine where and how to disassemble the frame.
Expanding a System with Additional Modules or Chassis
S6 systems can be disassembled to expand the system by adding or rearranging modules, or by adding chassis.
• You can add Display Modules to M40 systems (not M10) at any time, up to the capacity of the frame (one per channel section).
• You can add additional modules to expand a system in numerous ways, including the following:
• Add Fader, Process, and Knob Modules to increase the number of faders strips.
• Add Knob Modules for Expand Zones (up to two on M40 systems, or one on M10 systems).
• Add a Master Joystick Module or other optional module for extended functionality.
New modules can be added to existing chassis if there are available slots. In some cases, such as when installing modules into a Producers Desk for the first time, additional components such as cable sets, PSUs, and/or network switch ports (or an additional switch) are required.
• You can expand Leg or Desktop frames by adding one or more chassis in order to add or rearrange modules. This usually requires partially disassembling the frame first, installing the additional chassis, installing additional cable sets, PSUs, and network switch ports (or an additional switch), and then adding or re-installing modules.
For details on what you can add to your particular system and configuration, and what is required, contact your Avid reseller.

Part II: Disassembly

Chapter 2: Initial Disassembly

This section explains how to do the following initial disassembly steps, all of which are required whether you are moving or expanding a frame:
• Updating the Surface Settings
• Shutting Down the System
Removing Hardware Options
• Removing the Rear Covers
• Disconnecting Power Cables and Removing the Power Strip
• Removing Display Modules
• Removing T-Strips
• Removing Compression Panels and Fill Panels

Updating the Surface Settings

Before physically removing modules that will not be reinstalled in that system, you must update the surface configuration from the Surface > Settings page to remove (or “unclaim”) them. This can occur when moving a module to a different S6 system, or launching the system while the module is missing.
To remove a module from the surface configuration:
1 Navigate the Master Module touchscreen to the Surface > Settings page, then touch Config. 2 In the screen to select Frame Depth and Frame Width, press Next.
At the top of the screen, allowable module arrangements appear in columns.
3 Drag a blank strip over the module(s) you are removing.
If the Master Module is being removed, drag blank strips over all channel sections and then replace the Master Module section with only the Master Module (no Automation Module).
4 Press Next. 5 In the next screen, drag blank strips over Display Modules (if any) then press Next.
Temporarily Unclaiming a Module
If you forget to remove a module from the surface arrangement before physically moving it to another system, you can temporarily unclaim it after the new systems boots by holding the top two right-most switches on that module. However, it will reset back to its previous owner after a power cycle if not properly claimed by another system by adding it to that system’s arrangement.
Unclaiming Display Modules
To unclaim a Display Module:
1 Create a file named “unclaim.txt” and copy it to a FAT-formated USB flash drive. 2 Plug the USB drive into the Display Module you want to unclaim. After a few seconds, the Display Module screen displays a
“Not Connected” message indicating that the process is complete.
3 Be sure to add the Display Module back to your configuration. While doing so in the Settings > Surface, Config screen, the mod-
ule and/or its vacant slot might display red as if they are unavailable. This can be ignored, however, and you can drag the module back into the surface configuration to reclaim it.
Chapter 2: Initial Disassembly 7

Shutting Down the System

To shut down the system:
1 Navigate the Touchscreen to Settings > About page, then touch Shut Down. W ait until the Master Module has completely shut
down before proceeding.
Always shut down the Master Module from the About page before powering down the system!
2 Turn off the source that supplies power to the S6 Power Strip (UPS, power conditioner or other).

Removing Hardware Options

If your system includes a Keyboard Tray, Script Tracy, Speaker Deck, or VESA Arm option, remove them and any items mounted on them such as keyboards, speakers or computer displays before proceeding.

Removing the Rear Covers

Remove the upper Rear Covers to access cables and other components. We recommend removing all upper Rear Covers.
To remove the upper Rear Covers:
1 Standing at the back of the system, start at the far-right (see Figure 1). 2 Loosen the thumbscrews that hold the upper covers to their mounting brackets and then lift the covers off.
Figure 1. Removing the upper Rear Covers (Display Modules and cables not shown)

Disconnecting Power Cables and Removing the Power Strip

To remove the power strip:
1 Unplug the power strip from its source. 2 Disconnect all power cables connected to the S6 Power Strip (AC cables from chassis PSUs and network switch(es). 3 Pull the power cable for the S6 Power Strip back up through its channel where the Side Cover meets the frame, then remove the
power strip and set it aside.
Chapter 2: Initial Disassembly 8

Removing Display Modules

If your M40 system includes Display Modules, remove them next. Otherwise, proceed to “Removing T-Strips” on page 9.
To remove Display Modules:
1 Disconnect power and Ethernet cables connected to the Display Modules. 2 While holding the Display Module with one hand, remove the four fasteners that secure the first Display Module to its mounting
bracket.

Removing Compression Panels and Fill Panels

To remove Compression Panels:
Remove Compression Panels from the top-most slot of each chassis. Push them gently towards the back of the console to com-
press their built-in springs, then lift out the front edge and remove the panel.

How to Proceed

After completing the disassembly instructions in this chapter, proceed to Chapter 3, “Removing Modules and Disconnecting
Cabling.”
Chapter 2: Initial Disassembly 10

Chapter 3: Removing Modules and Disconnecting Cabling

This section explains how to remove modules and cables. It is recommended that you remove all modules and Cable Sets from the system before disassembling a frame to move it or to ex-
pand it. Chassis cannot be detached without removing modules from at least one chassis, but it is safer to remove all modules. Doing so makes it easier and safer to move the disassembled frame sections, and protects modules and cables from risk of damage.

Removing Modules

After removing upper Rear Covers, T-strips and compression panels as described in Chapter 2, “Initial Disassembly”, you can remove modules.
Remove modules by doing the following:
1 Make sure you have a padded tabletop or other flat surface to place each module as it is removed. Try to arrange removed mod-
ules in the same order and relative positions as they are in the assembled system to simplify reinstalling them later.
2 If your system includes Display Modules, remove them first (see “Removing Display Modules” on page 9) and place them
on the table face down.
3 Beginning with the top module (usually a Knob Module), remove each by lifting them out of their chassis. Be careful not to
strain the power or Ethernet cables.
4 Disconnect power, Ethernet and any other cables connected to the module (such as Talkback and KVM). A Master Module has
two Ethernet and two power connections.
When removing a Master Module, note which back panel Ethernet port (1 or 2) it is connected to, unless it will be connected in a different network configuration after reassembly.
5 Set each module aside. 6 Repeat for all other modules.
Chapter 3: Removing Modules and Disconnecting Cabling 11

Disconnecting Cable Sets

To disassemble a frame to move or expand a system, you should disconnect and remove all Cable Sets.
To disconnect Cable Sets:
1 Standing behind the system, start at either end and disconnect the Ethernet Cable Set from the back of the first chassis (far left
or far right).
Figure 5. Disconnecting the Cable Set attached to the far left chassis of a five-wide frame
2 Disconnect the other ends of that Cable Set from the S6 network switch, taking note of its switch ports.
You do not have to reconnect to the same switch ports but doing so can simplify re-assembly.
3 Place the removed Cable Set aside. 4 Move to the next chassis, disconnect its Cable Set, then disconnect the other ends from their network switch ports. 5 Repeat for all remaining Cable Sets. 6 Disconnect the Ethernet cable(s) that connect the S6 network switch to external workstations or networks, and remove it from
the frame.
7 If your system includes two network switches, be sure to disconnect the cable connecting them to each other.
If you have not already done so, make sure to disconnect the AC power cables for the network switch(es) and PSUs from the S6 Power Strip, and remove the Power Strip from the back of the frame.
8 When all Cable Sets are removed, proceed to Chapter 4, “Detaching Chassis.”
Chapter 3: Removing Modules and Disconnecting Cabling 12

Chapter 4: Detaching Chassis

This section explains how to determine which chassis to detach in order to move or expand a frame, and shows you how to remove frame components and detach chassis.
Components and systems are heavy! We recommend using four people, one to lift each corner. Never attempt to move a system that is five or more chassis in width. Never move or lift a chassis of any size by the Side Covers, Bolster, or Rear Covers as they can break. Move or lift while holding the metal chassis frame instead.

Determine Which Chassis to Detach

Whether you are moving or expanding a system, certain chassis must be detached from each other:
• When moving a system, certain chassis might need to be detached so that no section (multiple attached chassis) is more than five chassis in width.
• When adding one or more chassis to a system, some chassis must be detached before adding another.
• Whether moving or expanding a system that is nine or more chassis in width, multiple pairs of chassis must be detached so that no section is five or more chassis in width.
Guidelines to Determine Which Chassis to Detach
The diagrams in the following sections show where to detach chassis to move or expand Avid-configured S6 systems, which range in size from 8-fader/2-chassis, up to 32-fader/5-chassis, as well as custom S6 configurations:
• “Disassembling Avid Configurations” on page 14
• “Disassembling Custom S6 Configurations” on page 15
Moving a System
or section of a frame of five or more chassis. Diagrams for these size chassis begin with
Expanding a System
right or far left. This reduces the amount of components that need to be removed and reattached. Since this requires that existing, attached chassis must be lifted and moved (especially if expanding a Leg Frame system), use the diagrams on the following pages to determine where to detach chassis.
Guidelines for Leg Frame Systems
If your system includes Legs, first follow the instructions in this section to detach chassis so that no chassis section is more than four chassis in width, then remove all chassis from the Leg Frame.
For more information, see Chapter 5, “Disassembling and Expanding Leg Frames.”.

Disassembling a Frame

After determining which chassis you need to detach, disassemble the frame as described in the following instructions. Make sure you have already removed modules and connectivity components as instructed in
necting Cabling.”
As you disassemble frame components, keep all fasteners organized to simplify re-assembly. To simplify fastener organization, print the pages of
Appendix A, “Labels for Fasteners” and cut out the labels provided for each stage of disassembly.
Removing the Side Covers
Side Covers must be removed before you can remove the Bolster.
Never attempt to move or lift a chassis by the Side Covers, Bolster, or Rear Panels as they can break. Move or lift while holding on to the metal chassis instead.
To remove the Side Covers:
1 To remove the fasteners securing the Bolster to each Side Cover, first remove the plastic plugs concealing each fastener (one on
the left and one on the right end of the Bolster), then remove each fastener.

Expanding a Bolster
If you are adding one or more chassis to an existing system, you must also expand the Bolster. The Bolster can be expanded by adding an additional Bolster (two chassis in width, minimum) and combining it with the existing Bolster, or by replacing the existing Bolster with a single new, larger Bolster. The way in which you can expand your Bolster is determined by the number of chassis you are adding, and by the date that your system shipped from the factory.
• If you are adding two or more chassis, you can either add an additional Bolster extension or completely replace the existing Bolster.
• If you are adding a single chassis to a Leg Frame system, or if your system shipped from the factory before July 2, 2014, you must replace your existing Bolster. In addition, if your system shipped before July 2, 2014, you might also have to upgrade your Extrusions (Beams) and Side Covers.

How to Proceed

If your system includes a Leg Frame, proceed to Chapter 5, “Disassembling and Expanding Leg Frames.” If not, do either of the following.
To move an existing system:
1 Move each chassis section (and Leg Frame if applicable) following all the previously listed precautions. 2 After the components are in their new location, re-assemble Legs (if any) and chassis, then reinstall Cable Sets, modules, and
other hardware components. Refer to the S6 Installation Guide for step-by-step instructions.
To expand a system:
1 Follow instruction in the S6 Installation Guide to determine the Module layout and the new width of your frame. This determines
switch and PSU placement, and cabling requirements.
2 Re-assemble Legs (if any), re-attach and/or add new chassis, then reinstall Rear Covers, reinstall (or replace) Side Covers and
Bolster and other frame components.
3 If necessary, install new, or move existing Ethernet switch(es) and/or PSUs. 4 Install Cable Sets, modules, and other hardware components.

Chapter 5: Disassembling and Expanding Leg Frames

This section describes how to disassemble and expand Leg Frames. Before you begin, make sure you have removed all modules, cables, and chassis as described in previous sections of this guide.

Guidelines for Leg Frame Systems

If your system includes a Leg Frame, use the following guidelines to determine if, and how extensively, the Leg Frame must be disassembled.
If you are moving (not expanding) the system, you may not need to disassemble the Leg Frame if you are moving it a short distance, and it can fit through all doorways. Keep in mind that Leg Frames can be heavy.
To reduce the weight of the system before moving it, remove all modules and cable sets.
Leg Frames must be partially or completely disassembled to move or expand it if any of the following apply.
• The system includes two or more individual Leg Frames attached with Leg Frame Join Module(s). The Leg Frames must be detached from each other before lifting or moving.
• Larger Leg Frames might need to be fully disassembled (detach Beams from Legs) before they can be moved, depending on the distance being moved, the weight of the frame, and the size of doorways or other obstacles.
• If you are expanding a Leg Frame with one or more Leg Frame Extensions, or adding a Leg Frame Join Module and additional Leg Frame(s), the frame must be partially disassembled. If expanding a Leg Frame requires replacing existing Beams with longer ones, the Leg Frame must be fully disassembled.
How to Proceed
Follow the instructions in the rest of this section to disassemble your Leg Frame as appropriate for your situation.

Leg Frame Extensions and Bolsters
To expand an existing S6 Leg Frame with one or more Leg Frame Extensions, the Bolster must also be expanded. The Bolster can be expanded by adding an additional Bolster (two chassis in width, minimum) and combining it with the existing
Bolster, or by replacing the existing Bolster with a single new, larger Bolster. The way in which you can expand your Bolster is determined by the number of chassis you are adding, and by the date that your system shipped from the factory.
• If you are adding two or more chassis, you can either add an additional Bolster extension or completely replace the existing Bolster.
• If you are adding a single chassis, or if your system shipped from the factory before July 2, 2014, you must replace your existing Bolster. In addition, if your system shipped before July 2, 2014, you might also have to upgrade your Extrusions (Beams) and Side Covers. Contact your Avid S6 dealer, or Avid Customer Care, for more information.
