GETTING STARTED
The Monarch® 939i™ keyboard allows you to easily conf igure the printer and enter batc h data.
The keyboard works with t he Monarch® 9416®, 9416® XL®, 9906, ADTP1, and ADTP2 printers. This keyboard also works with non -Monarch printers. You may need a n auxiliary power supply f or the keyboard depending on your print er model. See Appendix A, “
Specifications and
Accessories” for the part number.
Overview
The 939i keyboard is an “intelligent” keyboard that is programmed to show user prompts and col lect data. Custom applications, or scr ipts, are written t o program the keyboard. The scr ipt is the program that runs on the keyboard to perf orm a specific task, such as scann ing or collecting data. We offer cust om script writing; contact your Sales Representat ive for informat ion and pricing.
With a script, you can
Create prompts f or the user to enter data manually or usi ng a scanner.
See Appendix C, “Configur ing the System
,” for more information.
Use look-up tables, or files, to store data that will be pr inted on labels. Perform additional data t racking, conversion, and m anipulation.
About Scripts
This manual does not cover any specific informat ion about what may be in your script, becaus e each script is different. Your script is written based on jobs you need t o perform. A script should contain se veral basics features:
A way to enter and exit the s cript. The prompts for ent ering the date and time each time you turn on the
printer if req uired by your script. The date and time ar e not saved when the printer/k eyboard are turned off.
The scanner’s configurat ion and setup (if you are using a scan ner).
Contact your System Admin istrator for more infor mation about these items.

Unpacking the Keyboard
After unpacking t he keyboard, look through all packag ing material for parts. Keep the box and pack aging material in case the k eyboard ever needs repair.
1. Pull the long, coiled c able out from the bottom of the base.
2. Slide the first loop in the cable slot as shown.
Connecting the 939I to a 9416 Printer
When using the keyboar d with a 9416 printer, the keyboard requ ires an auxiliary power suppl y with the 9-pin to 9-pin adaptor cable.
1. Turn OFF the printer before you connect the keyboard's cable.
2. Plug the 9-pin coiled keyboard cab le into the end of the adapt or cable.
3. Secure the other end of the adaptor cable to the 9-pin port on the
printer. Tight en the screws on the cables.

4. Connect the adaptor cable ’s power connector t o the keyboard power supply (5V).
5. Connect the keyboard power supply (5V) to the power cord.
6. Plug the power cord in to an elect rical outlet.
Note: Be sure that t he printer’s power suppl y is also attached to the
printer and plugg ed in to an electrical outlet.
7. Turn ON the printer. The keyboard receive s power from the auxiliar y power supply (5V).
Connecting the 939I to 9906, ADTP1, ADTP2 Printer
When using the keyboar d with a 9906, ADTP1, or ADTP2 printer, the keyboard receives power from the printer.
1. Turn OFF the printer before you connect the keyboard’s cable.
2. Plug the 9-pin coiled keyboard cable into t he back of the printer.
3. T ighten the screws on the cables.
4. Turn ON the printer.

Setting the Baud Rate
To print, the baud rat e of the keyboard and printer m ust be the same. The default print er baud rate is 9600; the def ault keyboard baud rate is
19200. Refer to the Oper ator’s Handbook or System Administrator’s
Guide for your printer t o change the printer baud rate to 19200.
Using the Keyboard
The keyboard has full alphabetic keys with 10 numeric k eys, 5 function keys, 4 arrow keys, and se veral special keys.

Button Description
Escape. R eturns the display to t he previo us menu or c lears an error.
Clear. Clears the entire field .
Pause. Int errupts pr inting. Pr ess Pause ag ain to resum e printing.
Feed. Fe eds a blank label if th ere is no pr int job. Pr ints a lab el in on-demand m ode.
Cut. Cuts the suppl y.
Displays m enu item s and allows you to move the cursor .
Moves between fields in Batch Entry.
Enter. Selects th e displayed menu item.
Shift. Toggles between upper and lower-case. Use with other keys to displa y ¢, “, @, :, ;, -, =, +, #, %, (, ), &, *.
Functions keys are res erved for script use. Depending on your script, F1 may print a set of test labels or exit th e application.
Caps Lock. Allows you to type all upper-case charact ers (a padlock symbol is displayed in the corner).
