GETTING STARTED
The Avery Dennison® Monarch® Tabletop Printer 1 prints on thermal t ransfer (ribbon) and thermal direct labels or tags. The printer pr ints labels continuously (in o ne strip) or on-demand (one lab el at a time). You can print on aper ture, die cut, black mark , or continuous (non-inde xed) supplies.
This chapter explains how t o:
connect the power cord and communication cable. use the printer's contr ol panel.
A power cord and ribbon take-up core (may already be on tak e-up reel) are included. Keep the box and packag ing material in case the printer ever ne eds repair.
Note: Review the Safety Document included with your print er and the Regulatory
information found on our Web site.
Audience
This Operator's Handbook is f or the person who prints and app lies labels. For advanced printer set up (configuring t he printer, changing RFID setting s), refer to the System Administrator ’s Guide.

Establishing Communications
Before you print, make sur e supply is loaded, the printer is connected to a host (a PC or a network) and is ready to rec eive data.
The printer can estab lish communications using the serial port, device USB por t, Ethernet port, or wirelessly (optional). Before the printer can accept pr int jobs from the host, you must:
connect the communication cab le between the printer and host or connect wire lessly. set the communication values o n the printer to match t hose at the host (System
Administrator only).
Ask your System Administrat or which communication method to use.
For Serial Communications:
Secure the serial cabl e with the connecting screws. Make sur e the printer's communication values m atch those at the host. The printer’s default values are 9600 Baud, 8 bit data frame, 1 stop bit , no parity, and DTR flow contr ol.
For USB Communications:
The printer has three USB 2.0 ports. Drivers are available on ou r Web site. Device port Connect to a PC and transf er data Host ports (2) Connect external devic es, such as a keyboard, scanner, or thumb drive

TROUBLESHOOTING
This chapter explains how to adjust print quality and contains basic troub leshooting information.
If you need to call Technica l Support, print a test label first. See “Printing a T est Label” in Chapter 1 for more informat ion.
Adjusting the Print Quality
Many factors impact pr int quality: type of supplies, print speed, print contrast , and the type of printer application. The printer supports both thermal t ransfer and thermal direct supplies. The type of supply should match the printer’s a pplication.
Use premium supplies if you want to print at high speeds. Select the print speed based on des ired throughput and pr int quality. If pr int quality is
more important, reduce t he print speed. A lower print speed inc reases the print quality of labels. If t hroughput is more important, incr ease the print speed.
If the print quality is too lig ht or too dark, adjust t he print contrast or the printh ead
pressure dials.
Setting the Print Contrast
Having the correct print contrast setting is import ant because it affects how well your bar codes scan and how long your print head lasts.
To change the print contrast :
1. Press MENU.
2. Press or until you see SETUP. Pr ess SELECT.
3. Press or until you see CONTRAST. Press SELECT.

4. Press CHANGE. The current setting is shown.

Adjusting the Printhead Pressure Dials
Two dials are located on eit her edge of the printhead assem bly. Use a coin or flathead screwdriver to adjust t he dials based on the width of your supply. The “out of the box” setting (default) is least pressure, which pr ovides optimal printing in most cases.
If you see smudging, ribbon wrinkling, or poor print qua lity, adjust the printhead pr essure dials.
Note: Both dials must be set t o the same position.
Each dial has four setting s:
Least pressure Light pressure Medium pressure Most pressure
Use the following guidelines to adjust the printhead pres sure. Check print quality and r epeat if necessary.
