Welcome to Avenues After School! Each semester, we aim to deliver a dynamic catalog of courses, leagues and programs that
transcend the school day, allowing students to remain connected through discovery and play—all delivered by our Avenues
faculty, staff and valued partners. This year, our online programs are open to families outside the Avenues day program.
Programs run Monday through Friday for nursery through grade 12, with the bulk of the programs geared to Nursery - Grade 5.
In true Avenues fashion, we continue to reflect and improve upon the distance learning experience, and are fully confident that
our programs will deliver an unparalleled online experience for your children. This catalog provides the options available to your
family starting this September. Please take some time to review our offerings with your children to discuss what courses align
with their interests and your family’s schedule. The catalog is dynamic, in the sense that pages are linked for quick and simple
navigation. The Index on page 2 will help you become familiar with catalog sections and at the bottom of each page are links to
the registration page or back to the index.
We look forward to seeing you this fall,
The Extended Learning Team

PRIVATE MUSIC
LESSONS
EXPECTATIONS
REGISTRATION
Private Music Lessons (PML) offer one-on-one musical instruction for 40 minutes each week. Lessons
are available starting in kindergarten, with piano only. Students and families commit to the entire
academic year to ensure the highest quality of musical education. Every student is carefully paired
by the PML coordinator with an experienced instructor who tailors the curriculum to each student.
Students gain confidence through performance experience in a safe and supportive environment. If it is
recommended by their instructor, students have the opportunity to perform in a recital twice per year in
the Black Box Theater; once in December and once in June. All students will participate in a winter and
spring recital.
Students must have an instrument to use at home throughout the school year. Information about
purchase and rental options are made available by emailing us at musiclessons-ny@avenues.org. For
musical success, students should practice for 15–45 minutes, three to five times per week. This amount
will vary depending on the student’s age and level of playing. Each student’s music and notebook must
be used during each lesson. The most effective practice is with an adult. Even if that adult doesn’t play
music, a little cheerleading goes a long way! Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend their
child’s lesson during Visitation Week. This is a great opportunity to communicate with their child’s
music instructor.
Private Music Lessons are traditionally a one-year commitment. Given our unique circumstances of the
2020–21 school year, we will be registering students for the fall semester only. Registration for spring will
be included in the spring catalog (return students will be given priority registration).
Parents should contact Lila Pollack, the PML coordinator, at musiclessons-ny@avenues.org and send
the following information about their child: grade, instrument, experience and preferred day/time. Ms.
Pollack will then carefully pair each student with an instructor. Once a lesson time has been assigned
by the coordinator, parents will receive instructions and a link to register. When payment is received,
the student’s lesson time is confirmed and families will be sent an introduction to their child’s assigned
instructor. Private Music Lessons are $87/ per lesson and the total cost will differ depending on the day
of the week.
