2.1 About this chapter

The control unit has been manufactured in strict compliance with the generally accepted rules of technology. However, this does not exclude the risk of damage to persons or property if the general safety instructions in this chapter and the safety instructions in this document are not observed. O Read these assembly instructions completely and carefully
before starting to operate the Marex ECS Control Unit.
O Keep these assembly instructions in a location where they
are accessible to all users at any time.
O Always include these assembly instructions when passing
the Marex ECS Control Unit on to third parties.

2.2 Intended use

The Marex ECS Control Unit is used to control ship propulsions. It is suitable for applications on boats, yachts and smaller work boats and for the installation in the engine room. The MarexECS Control Unit may only be used in applications with diesel engines together with the MarexECS-system under the ambient conditions described in this manual. An emergency stop switch must be provided on every control station. You may use the Marex ECS Control Unit as follows:
W to output electric signals for the throttle control of marine
propulsions
W to output electric signals for the control of marine
transmissions
W to collect control signals via the STATION bus cable from the

Maintenance and repair

9 Maintenance and repair

9.1 Cleaning

O Clean the product only by using a slightly moistened, lint-
free cloth.
O Only use solvent-free, non abrasive cleaning agents. O Never use pressure washers or steam cleaners to clean the
Marex ECS Control Unit.

9.2 Inspection

Check at regular intervals if
W all connectors attached to the Marex ECS Control Unit and
Marex ECS Wiring Harness fit securely,
W all screws fixing the component are tightened with the
appropriate torque,
W there is no conductive earth connection, W the control unit‘s metal body does not touch a metallic
surface,
W the retaining catches of the 60- and 94-pin connectors have
clicked into place.
If the ship or remote control system is subjected to heavy vibrations, you will need to inspect more frequently the cable and screw connections to terminals, plugs and fastening points.

9.3 Maintenance

The Marex ECS Control Unit is basically maintenance-free. Servicing the control unit extends to cleaning and inspecting the exterior. The following safety instructions must be observed:

Maintenance and repair
WARNING
Injury hazard due to high temperatures, dangerous voltages or other risks
Improper maintenance can cause damage to persons or property. O The control unit‘s metal body will heat up in operation.
Let the component cool down before touching it for inspection or cleaning.
O Never open the control unit‘s body. There are no parts
inside which you can repair.
O Only service the Marex ECS Control Unit if it is powered
off.
O The Marex ECS Control Unit must only be repaired by
AVENTICS or authorized personnel.

Disassembly and replacement

10 Disassembly and replacement

CAUTION
Injury hazard due to improper disassembly or replacement
Stored residual energy, sharp parts, points and corners on and in the component or on the required tools can cause injuries. If you replace the Marex ECS Control Unit while the ship is cruising, the ability to steer may be lost O Disassemble or replace the Marex ECS Control Unit only
in the habour or at the jetty.
O Disassemble or replace the Marex ECS Control Unit only
if the boat is not in operation.
O Have components disassembled or replaced only by
AVENTICS or authorized personnel (chapter 2.4).
Proceed as follows to disassemble the Marex ECS Control Unit:
1. Disconnect the power supply.
2. Open the retaining catch of the smaller, 60-pin male
connector:

Disposal

11 Disposal

NOTICE
Environmental damage due to improper disposal
Electronic components require special waste treatment and must only be disposed of by approved specialist companies. O Dispose of electronic scrap in an environmentally sound
way. Consult the responsible local authorities regarding the environmentally sound disposal.
O Dispose of the packaging in an environmentally compatible
way.

Error search and troubleshooting

12 Error search and
troubleshooting
Malfunctions are signaled to the operator by the ALARM LEDs and the device status LEDs on the control head’s keypad.
WARNING
Hazard of a fatal accident or collision due to a system failure
When ALARM LEDs flash red or light up permanently this indicates a device failure or malfunction which may result in a system failure or even unexpected reaction of the boat. You may no longer be able to control the main propulsion engine. To prevent a fatal accident or collision, immediately take the following measures when the ALARM LED flashes or lights up:
O First bring the boat into a safe state! O Only then acknowledge the alarm and eliminate the
cause of the fault
If the active control head fails, Marex ECS automatically reduces the engine rpm to idle and disengages the clutch.

12.1 Take control or change the control station

Provided your Marex ECS features more than one control head, you can control your boat from another control head should the active control head fail. Choose a control head of which the device status LED lights up green and push the COMMAND key twice in order to activate it.
If this is not possible, change to the local control of the propulsion system, if available.

12.2 Alarm signals and acknowledgment

If the ALARM LED of your control head flashes red accompanied by the buzzer:
O Bring the boat into a safe state! O Acknowledge the alarm by pushing the ALARM key. The
buzzer is muted and the ALARM LED changes its state:
– If the ALARM LED permanently lights up red, you have to
take troubleshooting measures immediately.
– Even if the ALARM LED turns off, you must check the
function of system and components immediately!
Twin-engine systems provide one ALARM LED each for port and starboard. In case of alarm, only one may flash or light up permanently. Then the failure only concerns one of the propulsion systems and the other propulsion side is not affected.

12.3 Troubleshooting the control head

In case of malfunctions, check the LEDs on the control head(s) and, if applicable, actuator(s) and carry out the corresponding steps as explained in the tables below:
Table 7: LED signals on the control head
LED-signal Meaning What to do
This control head is defective. O Replace the control head and repeat the
auto-configuration (see also chapter 8.1 and the documentation for the Marex ECS Control Head).
O If available, check also the function of the
other control heads by comparing the LED signals and referring to the instructions in this table.
O If available, check the function of the optional
actuator(s), see table 8.
This control head works fine,
but another system component
is defective.
O If available, check the function of the other
control heads, by comparing the LED signals and referring to the instructions in this table.
O If available, check the function of the optional
actuator(s), see table 8.
The communication of the
control head has failed or the
power supply is beyond the
admissible range.
Power supply failure. O Check the power supply, see also chapter
Do you still have the command and can control engine and gear? O Check the on-board power supply. If not, O check the STATION cables, see also chapter
7.3.
7.3.

12.4 Troubleshooting the actuator

In case of an alarm signal on the Marex ECS control head, it may be necessary to check the condition of the actuator(s). Two LEDs are provided under the transparent cover of the actuator to indicate its functional condition Compare the LED signals to the indications in the table below:
Table 8: LED-signals on the actuator
LED-signal Meaning What to do
This actuator is defective. O Replace the actuator, proceed as described in the
actuator’s documentation and repeat the Marex ECS auto-config (8.1).
This actuator works fine, but
another actuator may be
affected.
The actuator has stopped
working due to overload.
Power supply failure or the
power is beyond the admissible
range or the communication
between the actuator and the
control unit is disturbed.
O Check the function of all other actuators, if
available. Refer to the instructions in this table.
O Check manually if the actuator’s adjusting lever
can move freely by pulling the push/pull cable.
O Eliminate the cause of the stiff movement. O Dis- and reconnect the POWER cable and try again.
O Check the PROPULSION cable for proper
connection and visible damage. Replace the cable if defective.
O Measure the voltage at battery and system
components. Pay special attention to correct polarity and fuses.
O Make sure the wiring harness is properly
connected to the control unit with the retaining catches clicked into place.
