Disassembly and replacement
10Disassembly and replacement
CAUTION
Injury hazard due to improper disassembly or replacement
Stored residual energy, sharp parts, points and corners on
and in the component or on the required tools can cause
injuries. If you replace the Marex ECS Control Unit while the
ship is cruising, the ability to steer may be lost
ODisassemble or replace the Marex ECS Control Unit only
in the habour or at the jetty.
ODisassemble or replace the Marex ECS Control Unit only
if the boat is not in operation.
OHave components disassembled or replaced only by
AVENTICS or authorized personnel (chapter 2.4).
Proceed as follows to disassemble the Marex ECS Control Unit:
1. Disconnect the power supply.
2. Open the retaining catch of the smaller, 60-pin male
connector:

Error search and troubleshooting
12Error search and
troubleshooting
Malfunctions are signaled to the operator by the ALARM LEDs
and the device status LEDs on the control head’s keypad.
WARNING
Hazard of a fatal accident or collision due to a system
failure
When ALARM LEDs flash red or light up permanently this
indicates a device failure or malfunction which may result in
a system failure or even unexpected reaction of the boat.
You may no longer be able to control the main propulsion
engine. To prevent a fatal accident or collision, immediately
take the following measures when the ALARM LED flashes
or lights up:
OFirst bring the boat into a safe state!
OOnly then acknowledge the alarm and eliminate the
cause of the fault
If the active control head fails, Marex ECS automatically
reduces the engine rpm to idle and disengages the clutch.
12.1 Take control or change the control station
Provided your Marex ECS features more than one control head,
you can control your boat from another control head should the
active control head fail. Choose a control head of which the
device status LED lights up green and push the COMMAND key
twice in order to activate it.
If this is not possible, change to the local control of the
propulsion system, if available.

12.2 Alarm signals and acknowledgment
If the ALARM LED of your control head flashes red
accompanied by the buzzer:
OBring the boat into a safe state!
OAcknowledge the alarm by pushing the ALARM key. The
buzzer is muted and the ALARM LED changes its state:
– If the ALARM LED permanently lights up red, you have to
take troubleshooting measures immediately.
– Even if the ALARM LED turns off, you must check the
function of system and components immediately!
Twin-engine systems provide one ALARM LED each for port
and starboard. In case of alarm, only one may flash or light
up permanently. Then the failure only concerns one of the
propulsion systems and the other propulsion side is not
affected.

12.3 Troubleshooting the control head
In case of malfunctions, check the LEDs on the control head(s)
and, if applicable, actuator(s) and carry out the corresponding
steps as explained in the tables below:
Table 7:LED signals on the control head
LED-signalMeaningWhat to do
This control head is defective.OReplace the control head and repeat the
auto-configuration (see also chapter 8.1 and
the documentation for the Marex ECS
Control Head).
OIf available, check also the function of the
other control heads by comparing the LED
signals and referring to the instructions in
this table.
OIf available, check the function of the optional
actuator(s), see table 8.
This control head works fine,
but another system component
is defective.
OIf available, check the function of the other
control heads, by comparing the LED signals
and referring to the instructions in this table.
OIf available, check the function of the optional
actuator(s), see table 8.
The communication of the
control head has failed or the
power supply is beyond the
admissible range.
Power supply failure.OCheck the power supply, see also chapter
Do you still have the command and can control
engine and gear?
OCheck the on-board power supply.
If not,
Ocheck the STATION cables, see also chapter
7.3.

12.4 Troubleshooting the actuator
In case of an alarm signal on the Marex ECS control head, it may
be necessary to check the condition of the actuator(s). Two LEDs
are provided under the transparent cover of the actuator to
indicate its functional condition Compare the LED signals to the
indications in the table below:
Table 8:LED-signals on the actuator
LED-signalMeaningWhat to do
This actuator is defective.OReplace the actuator, proceed as described in the
actuator’s documentation and repeat the
Marex ECS auto-config (8.1).
This actuator works fine, but
another actuator may be
affected.
The actuator has stopped
working due to overload.
Power supply failure or the
power is beyond the admissible
range or the communication
between the actuator and the
control unit is disturbed.
OCheck the function of all other actuators, if
available. Refer to the instructions in this table.
OCheck manually if the actuator’s adjusting lever
can move freely by pulling the push/pull cable.
OEliminate the cause of the stiff movement.
ODis- and reconnect the POWER cable and try again.
OCheck the PROPULSION cable for proper
connection and visible damage. Replace the cable
if defective.
OMeasure the voltage at battery and system
components. Pay special attention to correct
polarity and fuses.
OMake sure the wiring harness is properly
connected to the control unit with the retaining
catches clicked into place.
