2. Designed purpose of use
This AVANT edge trimmer is an attachment suitable for use with AVANT multi purpose loaders. The trimmer
is designed to clean the edges of lawn, hedges or flower arrangements etc. The edge is cu by a cutting disc
and a hydraulic trimmer breaks up any soil or lawn, leaving good-looking finish. The hydraulic trimmer can be
mounted on either side of the cutting disc, and the edge trimmer can be mounted on the loader in two ways,
making working with it efficient.
The attachments have been designed to require as little maintenance as possible. Regular maintenance
tasks can be performed by the operator. The edge trimmer blade parts can be replaced. Not all maintenance
tasks can be performed by the operator; certain tasks must be left to qualified professionals. Read the
maintenance and servicing instructions in this manual. Please contact your AVANT retailer if you have
additional questions about the operation or maintenance of the equipment or if you require spare parts or
maintenance services.
3. Safety instructions for the edge trimmer
Please bear in mind that safety is the result of several factors. The loader-attachment combination is highly
powerful, and improper or careless use may cause serious personal injury or property damage. Due to this,
you should carefully familiarise yourself with the manuals of both the loader and the attachment before
starting operation. Do not use the attachment if you have not familiarised yourself with its operation and the
related hazards.
The purpose of these instructions is to help you to:
• use the equipment in a safe and efficient manner
• monitor and prevent any hazardous situations
• keep the equipment intact and ensure a long service life
• When mounting the attachment to the loader, ensure that the locking pins of the
loader's quick attach plate are in the lower position and that they have locked the
edge trimmer to the loader.
•The trimmer is to be used by one operator at a time. Do not let others near the danger
area of the equipment when it is in use.
•There is an impact hazard from thrown objects at the operating area of the edge
trimmer, do not let bystanders stand near the machine. The safety distance from the
edge trimmer is 5 meters.
•Never leave the driver’s seat when the trimmer is running. Shut down the loader engine
before going near the machine.
4(12)
•Always transport the equipment as low and as close to the machine as possible to keep
the centre of gravity low.
•When working, pay attention to the contours of the terrain and other hazards, such as
rocks or branches and trees reaching the driver's seat. Pay attention to the
surroundings and any other persons and machines moving in the vicinity.
•Shut down the loader engine before any maintenance or adjustments. Ensure that the
trimmer is properly supported during maintenance, inspections or cleaning.
• Never go under a raised attachment or loader boom.
• Do not modify the structure of the attachment in a manner that would affect its safety.
• Also read the safety instructions for the loader in the loader manual.
Note that the loader boom moves down even if the engine has been stopped. Never
go under a raised boom or edge trimmer component.
Familiarise yourself with the loader controls in a safe area. Pay particular attention to
the safe stopping of the attachment and the machine.
Remember to wear proper protective clothing:
•The noise level in the driver's seat exceeds 85 dB(A). Wear hearing protection while

5. Assembly of the edge trimmer
The edge trimmer is delivered in working condition. Mount the attachment and its hydraulic hoses according
to the following instructions, put the edge trimmer in a running condition and practise its use in a safe area.
Read the following instructions for mounting, using and maintenance of the trimmer before starting the
equipment.
These instructions are applicable to mounting the edge trimmer to the boom quick attach
plate of AVANT loaders that have standard quick attach locking. If your machine is equipped
with a hydraulic locking and/or serial quick attach system, refer to the relevant manuals for
additional mounting instructions.
5.1. Mounting the edge trimmer to the loader
Mounting the attachment to the loader is quick and easy, but it must be done carefully. If the attachment is
not locked to the loader, it may detach from the loader and cause hazardous situations. In the worst case,
the attachment may slide onto the driver along a raised boom. For this reason, the attachment must under no
circumstances be raised over one metre when it has not been locked. To prevent hazardous situations,
always follow the attachment mounting instructions provided in the following pages. Also remember the
safety instructions in Section 3.
The attachment is mounted to the loader boom by using the quick attach plate and one of the two the
counterparts on the attachment. The locking is semi-automatic; when the boom front plate is tilted towards
the loader, the locking pins are released as they hit the pin guides. The trimmer is mounted to the loader as
follows:
6(12)
Never move or raise an attachment that has not been locked.
Step 1:
• Lift the quick attach plate locking pins up and turn them backwards into
the slot so that they are locked in the upper position.
• Ensure that the hydraulic hoses are not in the way during installation.
Step 2:
• Turn the quick attach plate hydraulically to an obliquely forward position.
The angle between the loader front plate and attachment coupling should
be about as shown in the adjacent picture.
• Drive the loader onto the attachment. If your loader is equipped with a
telescopic boom, you can utilise this.
• Depending on the storage of the trimmer and the loader model, the
mounting may need to be assisted by hand. Drive the loader as close to
the quick attach plate as possible, and tilt the loader plate more to help
the mounting. It is advisable to store the attachment in a way that the
quick attach brackets can be reached by the loader.
Step 3:
• Turn the boom control lever left to turn the bottom section of the quick
attach plate onto the attachment.
• Lift the boom slightly – pull the boom control lever backward to raise the
attachment off the ground.
• Turn the boom control lever further left so that the automatic locking of
the attachment triggers the locking pins.
Before moving or raising the attachment, ensure that the locking
pins are in the lower position and come through the fasteners on
both sides.
Do not use the automatic return of the locking pins at a height of over a half metre. If
the locking pins do not return to the normal position when the front plate is tilted, do
not raise the attachment any more. Lower the attachment on the ground and secure
the locking manually.
When you have finished working with the edge trimmer, lower it on an even surface, where it cannot move by
accident. Prevent the unintended movement of the trimmer by placing it e.g. on a palette or blocks of wood in
a way, that the cutting blade will not touch the ground.
7(12)
5.2. Connecting and disconnecting the hydraulic fittings
To connect and disconnect the fittings, move the collar at the end of the female fitting. Before connecting or
disconnecting hydraulic fittings, shut down the loader engine and move the working hydraulics lever or pedal
on the loader to its extreme positions a few times. This way, there will be no remaining pressure in the
system and the fittings are easy to connect.
Always ensure that all three fittings are properly connected to the corresponding fittings
on the loader. If any of the hoses is not properly connected, the hydraulic motors of the
edge trimmer may be damaged.
Never connect or disconnect quick couplings or other hydraulic components while the
system is under pressure. High-pressure fluid ejection may cause injuries.
When removing the attachment, always disconnect the hydraulic fittings before
detaching the quick attach plate, to prevent hose damage and any oil spills. Reinstall
the protective caps on the fittings to prevent impurities from entering the hydraulic
system.
Keep the fittings as clean as possible; use the protective caps for the quick couplings on both the attachment
and the loader. Dirt, ice, etc. may make using the fittings significantly more difficult. Note that the protective
caps on the loader and the attachment can be fastened to each other during operation to reduce the
accumulation of dirt. Never leave the hoses hanging on the ground; place them on top of the equipment.
6. Instructions for use
Work can be started when the edge trimmer has been mounted and the hydraulic fittings connected
according to the instructions. Check the attachment once more before starting work. Checking the
attachment before work is a part of ensuring safety and the best performance of the equipment.
•Check that all obstacles, including any hidden ones, have been removed from the working area
before operation. Remember correct working methods and avoid unnecessary descending from the
loader.
•Check that the trimmer and the cutting disc can rotate freely and that there is no string or other
foreign material around them.
•Ensure that the loader and attachment are used in a safe manner and as intended. Do not allow
children to operate the machine.
•Check regularly to ensure there are no hydraulic leaks. Refer to Section 7 for maintenance
instructions.
•Operate the attachment only from the driver's seat.
It is recommended, that when a rotating attachment is used, such as the edge trimmer, the
loader should be equipped with hydraulic oil cooler. Overheating of the oil decreases the
power and affects the service life of the hydraulic components of both the attachment and
the loader. Regularly clean the loader oil cooler core; refer to the loader manual for more
instructions.
Never go under a raised boom or edge trimmer component. Note that the loader
boom moves down even if the engine has been stopped.
8(12)
6.1. Use
The edge trimmer is started by turning the working hydraulics valve to its locked position. Depending on the
loader model, the working hydraulics control device is a lever that is locked in the front or right position, or a
pedal that is locked to lower position.
•The edge trimmer is used with high engine rotations and depending on the model of the loader and the
trimmer, one or two hydraulic work pumps are used.
• Adjust the drive speed according to the material being cut and the terrain.
• If your loader is equipped with a telescopic boom, you can utilize that to see the working area better from
the loader.
Normally the edge trimmer should be operated when driving forward. Practise the use of the trimmer and the
controls of the loader in a safe area. If you are unfamiliar with the loader to be used, it is recommended to
practice its use without any attachments.
The hydraulic trimmer can be mounted on either side of the cutting disc. Mount the hydraulic hoses
according to the mounting point.
Before using the trimmer, check that the hydraulic motor is properly mounted on either
side of the cutting disc. Ensure that the hydraulic are fixed so that they are never
against the cutting disc.
Keep the protective bracket around the trimmer in its place. Note that regardless of the
bracket, rocks or cuttings may eject from the trimmer with high velocity. Stop the
trimmer, if there are persons less than 5 meters from the work site.
6.1.1. Slope operation
Mowing on inclined terrains and slopes requires extra caution. Watch for holes, bumps, rocks and other
possible hidden obstacles. Uneven terrain could overturn the machine. Use low speed and do not make
sudden changes in speed or direction. Try driving straight up or down the hill, not across, to avoid excessive
side tilting. Exercise extreme caution when driving near ditches or embankments as the machine could
suddenly turn over if an edge caves in.
7. Inspections, maintenance and servicing
Continuous maintenance of the edge trimmer includes monitoring the condition of the blades as well as
regular cleaning and lubrication of the equipment.
Ensure that the edge trimmer is properly supported during all inspection and
maintenance procedures. All maintenance procedures must be performed with the
loader engine shut down and the hydraulic hoses disconnected.
Check the condition of the hydraulic hoses and components when the engine has been turned off and the
pressure has been relieved. Repair all leaks immediately after detecting them; a small leak can quickly grow
into a big one. Do not use the equipment, if you have discovered a fault in the hydraulic system. Leaking
hydraulic fluid may penetrate the skin and cause serious injuries. Hydraulic fluid is also harmful to the
environment.
9(12)
Check hoses visually for cracks or abrasions. Monitor the wearing of the hoses and stop the use, if the
surface layer of the hose has worn off. If there are signs of leaking, to check the component, hold up a piece
of cardboard in the area where a leak is suspected. Finding any of these faults means that the hydraulic
hose or component in question must be replaced. Spare parts are available from your nearest AVANT
retailer or service point.
Never tighten a hydraulic fitting under pressure,
since the fitting may break and the released oil
may cause serious injuries. Do not use the
equipment, if you have discovered a fault in the
hydraulic system.
7.1. Cleaning the trimmer
You may use a pressure washer and a mild detergent. Do not use strong solvents or spray directly at the
hydraulic components or at the labels on the attachment either. Lubricate the lubrication points on the
trimmer after washing.
Before longer storage periods clean the trimmer components carefully. Touch up the paint where needed or
oil the visible metal surfaces and grease the lubrication points to prevent rust damage. Do not store the
attachment directly against the ground; place it on blocks of wood or on a pallet, for example.
7.2. Lubricating the edge trimmer
There are a total of two lubricating points on the edge trimmer, located at the bearings of the cutting disc. A
small amount of lubricant is added every 5-10 hours of use. All lubrication nipples are standard R1/8”
nipples. Replace any damaged nipples.
Lubricant must be added approximately every 5 to 10 operating hours. Clean the end
of the nipple before greasing. Only add the grease amount of a couple of grease
press pushes at a time.
8. Warranty terms
Avant Tecno Oy grants a warranty of one year (12 months) for the edge trimmer from the date of purchase.
The warranty covers repair costs as follows:
• Work costs are covered, if the repair is not performed at the factory.
