TELL ME MORE®
Welcome to TELL ME MORE
®
TELL ME MORE®, the complete language learning method, is a pedagogical software package that makes teaching and learning a foreign language both practical and rewarding. With TELL ME MORE
Pedagogical Handbook
!
®
, students are able to work on the whole range of skills necessary to master a foreign language. The wide range of activities (dialogues, various exercises, cultural texts, etc.) allows students to work on all skills (oral and written comprehension, oral and written expression) and areas of knowledge (vocabulary, grammar, culture, etc.). The Tutor provides the link between the resource material and the students, guiding each of them toward the activities best suited to their objectives.
This manual is designed to help Tutors guide students through whatever Learning Path the student uses. The manual presents:

Pedagogical Handbook

The Learning Modes

TELL ME MORE® offers three different Learning Modes.
The Guided Mode enables structured learning based on specific topics.
It is organised into different Learning Paths, each adapted to the student’s ability level.
The Free-to-Roam Mode gives complete access to the linguistic and pedagogical content.
It is organised into workshops and is designed for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and TELL ME MORE
The Dynamic Mode directs students, offering them the activities best suited to their needs. The
exercises suggested vary according to the student’s original objectives and the results obtained in each activity.
The Guided Mode: for structured topic-based learning
Students progress using Learning Paths made up of TELL ME MORE®’s lessons and activities. The standard Learning Path, available in every Lesson Family, allows students to work on the whole range of skills and knowledge areas of a language (vocabulary, grammar, oral and written comprehension, oral and written expression and culture), through topics and cultural activities.
®
.
The activities and lessons are defined and organised by level of increasing difficulty. Students can follow the activities and lessons in the order proposed by TELL ME MORE
®
or they can do
the activities in any order they wish. However, the most effective way to progress in the Guided Mode is to follow the suggested Learning Path. We would recommend that students who prefer to select their activities themselves work in the Free-to-Roam Mode.
The Free-to-Roam Mode: free access to the content of TELL ME MORE®, organised into workshops for students already familiar with the language and the software.
The workshops
In this Learning Mode, the linguistic and pedagogical content of TELL ME MORE® is organised into six different workshops. Students can therefore move freely among the topics and activities on offer. This Learning Mode is aimed at students who already have a good knowledge of the language and are used to working in TELL ME MORE The workshops offer two different methods of language learning:
- learning based on a specific topic, using the lessons and activities in the Lesson Workshop. This workshop allows students to work on all the skills and knowledge areas of a foreign language using vocabulary and activities from a specific topic.
- a learning programme focusing on a specific skill or knowledge area, taking activities from the Vocabulary, Grammar, Oral, Written and Cultural Workshops. These workshops group together all the activities available in TELL ME MORE improve and perfect their linguistic skills and knowledge.
The content of each workshop
Each workshop is divided into two sections: the first section is made up of consultation activities or activities in the target language, all based on the topic of the lesson (Glossary, Grammar Explanations, Maps, etc.). The second section includes the exercises, classed according to level of difficulty, which allow the student to practise the notions and skills learnt in the previous section. As the activities are set out in each workshop in order of increasing difficulty, we recommend that students follow the order suggested by TELL ME MORE

Presentation and description of the activities working on areas of knowledge
The activities in TELL ME MORE® allow students to either start learning a foreign language or improve their existing linguistic skills, both oral and written.
A A summary of all the activities and the skills/knowledge areas they address is available in the appendix.
Dialogue
The Dialogue activity enables students to use vocabulary by propelling them into situations taken from everyday and professional life. The dialogues bring to life a large number of expressions that constitute the basis of conversational language, giving students the opportunity to build their vocabulary and learn a wide range of expressions useful in communicative situations. The interactivity of the dialogues enables students to:
retain these expressions and re-use them each time they want to express themselves, without having to
think of a new linguistic construction;
become pro-active and participate: students are obliged to speak, as the Dialogue cannot continue
without their participation. The British English pack includes video dialogues. They allow realistic and direct exchanges of questions and answers between the video and the student. The TELL ME MORE by placing emphasis on learning expressions and idioms rather than isolated words. If students so wish, they can improve their grammar and vocabulary by accessing, through the Links icon, different exercises and Grammar Explanations linked directly to, and accessible from, the Dialogue.
®
method makes it easier to acquire the basics of everyday language communication
Pronunciation/Phonetics
The Pronunciation activity is split into three sections. These activities give students the opportunity to work on listening comprehension and oral expression, skills essential when communicating in a foreign language.
Sentence Pronunciation
Students can access the sentence pronunciation exercise either from the Dialogue, using the Find out more about a word function, or from the Sentence Pronunciation activity itself. The sentences (45 sentences per lesson, or 540 per level – 675 for British English) are classed by lesson. It is possible to isolate each word in
the sentence, pinpointing specific pronunciation problems, and then access the Word Pronunciation exercise.
Word Pronunciation
Students can focus on words found in the exercises, the Dialogue and the Video and Questions activity by accessing the word pronunciation exercise. This can be done either by using the Find out more about a word function, or by accessing the Word Pronunciation activity itself. The words are divided into four main lexical families: Daily Life, Intellect and Reason, Society and Institutions and Professional Life. Each one is then divided into 6 to 15 families, which are then divided into between 24 to 69 sub-families.
Phonetics Exercise
Students also have access to the Phonetics Exercise, which deals with all the phonemes of the language in which they are working. Each phoneme is represented by a 3D sound animation, next to which a brief explanation of the phoneme can be found. There are 26 to 43 phonemes available, depending on the language being learnt.
List of phonetic points
A PDF file containing a list of the phonetic points for each language is available in the program group file.
Video and Questions
The videos, lasting two to three minutes, allow students to work on and improve their oral comprehension. This skill can be truly tested and allowed to develop if the translation of the script function is deactivated. On the other hand, the script function does enable students to work on their oral and written comprehension at the same time. It is also possible to have a full-screen version of the video. Approximately ten closed

questions follow, relating to the video in global or specific terms, testing students on what they have remembered from the video. Students can review the whole video or just the paragraph relating to a question by clicking on the video link whenever they are unable to answer.
In the Oral Workshop in the Free-to-Roam Mode, there are two series of closed questions available for each video. Students can choose which set of questions to attempt. The first set of multiple-choice questions is made up of 8 to 10 general questions relating to the video with a varying number of answers proposed, but with only one of them being correct. The second set of multiple-choice questions has 10 specific questions relating to the video, each with a choice of 8 answers, a maximum of 4 of which may be correct.

A PDF file containing a list of the lessons and videos for each language is available in the program group file.
Exercises
The various exercises in TELL ME MORE
®
provide students with a full and varied learning programme, systematically making use of the vocabulary and the grammar points used in the dialogues and videos. These exercises allow students to practise and consolidate what they have learnt.
Students can not only see the vocabulary again, but they can also expand their knowledge of a grammar point using the following exercises that have been specifically created with this aim in mind: Word Order,
Grammar Practice, Sentence Practice, Words and Functions, Fill-in-the-Blanks, The Right Word, Text Transformation and Dictation (in certain cases only).
Other exercises focus on expanding students’ vocabulary by re-using words dealt with in the Dialogue and the Video and Questions exercises: Word Association, Picture/Word Association, Mystery Phrase, Crossword Puzzles, Words and Topics, Word Searches and Written Expression. Certain exercises allow students to concentrate on syntax and learn idiomatic expressions (Word Order) or even focus on writing and spelling (Written Expression, an exercise focusing on different sources depending on the lesson, and Dictation). The Text Transformation exercise tests students’ written expression as well as their grasp of a particular grammar point. All the exercises can be slightly modified to put the emphasis on a different linguistic skill or knowledge area, depending on the parameters selected in TELL ME MORE
®
(Crossword Puzzle: Translation, Crossword Puzzle: Listen and Write, Word Order with speech recognition, etc.). The difficulty level of each exercise is also variable.
Note: The Written Expression activity is not available for those learning German or Dutch.
®
Finally, the exercises testing the cultural content of TELL ME MORE
, such as the Riddles, Patchworks and Mapmania exercises, allow students to improve upon their vocabulary and cultural knowledge at the same time. Students can thus develop upon the knowledge learnt from the Cultural Texts and Maps.

Grammar Explanations
Students can access any one of the 105 to 192* grammar explanations available for each language whenever the need arises. The grammar rules are set out in a concise and attractive manner. Many of the grammar points are accompanied by humorous cartoons complete with audios, allowing students to see and understand clear examples of the grammar structures found in the dialogues and videos. Students can choose to concentrate on one specific grammar level (Elementary, Basic, Average, Advanced or Specialised). Finally, students can also search by grammatical category (The Sentence, Nominals and Modifiers, The Verbal Group, Mood, Voice and Auxiliaries, Linking Words, Vocabulary), and then sub-category to select a grammar point to study.

Conjugation Tool
The Conjugation Tool, accessible from every activity using the Find out more about a word function, gives students access to the conjugation of any one of the 550 to 2,300 verbs available (depending on the language).
A Refer to the conjugation table (number of verbs conjugated and the list of tenses and modes) for each language, available in the appendix.
Glossary
The Glossary, containing around 10,000 words, gives students access to all the words and expressions used in TELL ME MORE The Glossary offers a translation, as well as a recording, of each term found in TELL ME MORE

®
. Students can search either by level of difficulty (Elementary, Basic, Average, Advanced or Specialised), or by lexical family. The words are divided into four main lexical families (Daily Life, Intellect and Reason, Society and Institutions and Professional Life), each one is then divided into sub-families (between 6 and 15 depending on the family). Therefore, students can concentrate on vocabulary relating to specific topics.

Cultural Texts
The Cultural Texts (27 to 81 depending on the language) are organised into 7 to 8 topics (Geography, History, Traditions, Cuisine, Literature, Art and Architecture, Entertainment, Society and Economy) and deal with specific subjects relevant to each language. Each cultural text is made up of the informative and clearly written text itself, an illustration or a photo and a list of keywords allowing the student to seize quickly upon the essential vocabulary in each text. There is also the possibility, depending on the topic, of viewing a map corresponding to the text. Finally, students can select from two text display options: text summary (with only one sentence and a larger image) or the complete text.
List of Cultural Texts
A PDF file containing a list of the Cultural Texts for each language is available in the program group file.
Maps
This activity is made up of 6 to 8 Maps, illustrating in different ways the country or countries in which the target language is spoken. Students can thus see the layout of continents, countries, towns, rivers and lakes, seas and oceans etc. and also familiarise themselves with the geography of the country in which the language they are learning is spoken. The maps are divided into three types:
maps of countries (topographical, political, linguistic)
maps of Europe (topographical, political, linguistic)
maps of the world (topographical, political, linguistic)

How to use TELL ME MORE
TELL ME MORE® is a teaching aid aimed at either replacing or complementing traditional language
learning materials (books, video cassettes, audio cassettes, etc.) that Tutors may use, for example, to introduce a study theme and its associated vocabulary or to expand upon a grammar point. This section sets out different ways of using TELL ME MORE explains how to introduce cultural topics, focus more on oral expression or even manage a class containing students of differing abilities.

Group work with TELL ME MORE® activities

Here are a few suggestions for Tutors wishing to integrate TELL ME MORE®’s activities into their lesson plans. This list of suggestions, organised around skills and linguistic knowledge, is by no means exhaustive and does not aim to lay down one single use for TELL ME MORE Tutors are free to use the software in any way they wish.
Focusing on oral comprehension
Video and Questions
Having watched the whole video, Tutors can ask students to summarise and describe orally what they saw. This activity tests students’ comprehension of the language as spoken by a native speaker. Tutors can also print and use the multiple-choice questions (available from Tutor Tools). Students must then try and answer the questions using the key vocabulary from the video.
Dictation
Tutors can play sentences from the dictations in TELL ME MORE thus developing students’ oral comprehension and written expression. Tutors can also ask students to write each of the sentences on the board and then pronounce them, thus involving the group in the correction process. The Tutor can then point out mistakes to avoid, and highlight spelling, grammar and syntax errors. Just like the Video and Questions exercise, the Dictation uses authentic material spoken by native speakers with differing accents.

. Rather, it seeks to give a few tips.
®
, making students write them out, and
Focusing on written expression
Written Expression
As with the Video and Questions activity, Tutors can display the Written Expression source material (image or video) and then ask students to give an oral or written description. This activity helps develop spoken and written expression and students’ ability to summarise. It is also an ideal way of checking that students have learnt vocabulary linked to a specific theme and are able to use this vocabulary correctly when constructing sentences.
Text Transformation
This multi-faceted activity allows students to work on their written comprehension and expression as well as their grammar skills. Tutors can display the text to be transformed using an overhead projector, allowing students to complete the exercise. Then, when the class corrects the exercise together, each student takes it in turn to read out one of the sentences. This activity develops students’ expression (particularly written expression) and their knowledge of the grammar point relating to the exercise.
Focusing on vocabulary
Crossword Puzzles
Tutors can project the crossword grid onto a screen and ask individual students to translate the word shown into the target language. This activity allows students to revise vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as spelling in a foreign language.
Picture/Word Association
The aim of this activity, which can also be adapted for group work, is to find the word corresponding to the picture. Each exercise can be displayed without the answers (by modifying the Picture/Word Association options in the Lesson Workshop in the Free-to-Roam Mode), allowing students to then take turns to say the answer corresponding to the photo.

TELL ME MORE®
Pedagogical Handbook
Mystery Phrase
Tutors can have students carry out the Mystery Phrase activity to evaluate their vocabulary and written comprehension. The definition can be projected onto a screen. Students can then take it in turns to suggest letters until the word or words are completed. This exercise also gives students the opportunity to revise the phonetic alphabet.
Word Association
Tutors can project the two lists of words onto a screen, and ask students to link the words in the left column to the words on the right, following the instructions for each exercise.
Words and Topics
Using an overhead projector once again, Tutors can ask students to choose words from the list and place them in the correct box. Furthermore, Tutors can ask students to propose other words that could also be placed in the boxes to give an additional dimension to this vocabulary-based exercise.
Focusing on the culture of the language
Acting as a support to the exercise-based content, these activities allow students to discover cultural elements specific to each target language.
Cultural Texts
Tutors can hand out one or several cultural texts (which can be printed out using Tutor Tools) on specific topics so that students can read them and focus on the key vocabulary. The class can then discuss the topic in greater detail, using the new vocabulary they have learnt. Tutors can also ask students to write a summary of the selected topic to test their written comprehension and written expression.
Maps
It is possible for Tutors to project maps onto a screen having removed the place names or icons. They can then ask students to name and locate towns, rivers, regions, etc. This activity can also serve as a starting point for a discussion on a specific topic related to the country in question.
Mapmania Tutors can display the exercise to the whole group and ask students to take turns in placing the given elements on the map (towns, capital cities, rivers, etc.). This exercise reinforces the knowledge gained from the Maps activity.
Patchworks
This activity can be used once students have studied the cultural texts. Tutors project the images onto the screen, and students then have to find the name corresponding to the image.
Riddles
This activity can be used once students have studied the cultural texts. Tutors can include the students in the activity by projecting the definitions of the words onto the screen and asking them to find the answer to the culture-based question.

or even work on a specific topic themselves. Students can thus study the next topic in the list and its associated vocabulary by attempting the dialogues in the different function modes (Explore, Expression and Comprehension) and by taking note of the key vocabulary linked to the lesson topic. They can also, if the Tutor wishes, work specifically on a grammar point already dealt with in their course. Therefore, students can revise, at their own pace, grammar points they had problems with. Tutors also have the possibility of setting specific tasks and asking students to search TELL ME

Pedagogical Handbook
Focusing on grammar, syntax and written expression
Words and Functions
Students can work on their own or in groups on this activity. It allows them to revise and/or perfect their knowledge of the function of the words in a text.
The Right Word and Fill-in-the-Blanks These two activities work on the same principle: finding the word that correctly completes the sentence. This can be done with the aid of the grammar explanations related to the exercises. Tutors can recommend these activities to students who have difficulties with written comprehension and grammar or those who are progressing more slowly than the rest of the group.
Sentence Practice and Grammar Practice These activities allow students to perfect their written expression, grammar and syntax, working either on their own or in groups. As in The Right Word and Fill-in-the-Blanks activities, students can access grammar explanations linked to each exercise.
Word Order without speech recognition
Students can either work on their own or in groups on this activity to improve their syntax.
Focusing on oral comprehension
Dialogue: Comprehension with speech recognition
The Dialogue: Comprehension activity allows students to listen to the audio recordings as many times as is necessary to complete the dialogue. They can therefore perfect, at their own pace, their oral comprehension thanks to audio recordings made by native speakers with various accents.
Focusing on oral expression
Sentence Pronunciation Word Pronunciation and Phonetics Exercise Thanks to these three activities, students can improve their oral expression by repeating words and sentences while at the same time imitating the model pronounced by a native speaker. They can repeat the sentence or word as many times as they like, until they are satisfied with their pronunciation or they have achieved their objectives. Students can therefore work and progress at their own pace without being surrounded by their Tutor and peers. Tutors should recommend these activities to students who will profit most from them.
Dialogue: Expression, The Right Word with speech recognition, Picture/Word Association with speech recognition, Word Order with speech recognition
These activities allow students to work on their oral expression, not only through dialogues but also through exercises. As the number of times the exercises can be attempted is limited, it is recommended that students attempt these activities, after having already done them without speech recognition.
A A table indicating the average time spent on each activity is available in the appendix.

Choose the Learning Mode corresponding to the student’s profile

When choosing individual learning programmes, Tutors must try to adapt each programme to correspond exactly to the student’s needs. Everything depends upon how much autonomy Tutors wish to give each student. For a detailed description of the content of each of these modes, refer to the The Learning Modes section.

A Details of the Complete Beginner, Beginner and Complete Learning Paths (for the Lesson Families Intermediate and above) are available in the appendix.
Recommend the Free-to-Roam Mode to more advanced students
The Free-to-Roam Mode is recommended for the more autonomous student. Tutors should still assist these students to make sure that they follow a balanced learning programme and therefore make the most of their learning with TELL ME MORE Tutors can ask students to start on a specific lesson from the Lesson Workshop, beginning with the Dialogue and then completing all the other activities available in the workshop. Finally, students should consult the Glossary and the Grammar Explanations, both of which are specific to each lesson. Students can do one or several lessons in the same fashion. More advanced students can even personalise their learning by modifying the General Options (activating the Timer, for example) or the Activities Options (choose exercises with or without speech recognition, define the size of the grids for the Crossword Puzzles or Word Searches, etc.). These options allow students to increase the level of difficulty of the exercises and/or attempt the exercises in a different way. Finally, according to the results obtained, students can choose to revise or focus on one skill or knowledge area in particular by attempting exercises from a specific workshop (Vocabulary, Grammar, Oral, Written).
