AudioSource Preamp 5.1 Owner's Manual

Basic Guidelines
The preamplifier is the control unit of your audio system. The Preamp 5.1 is a dual channel preamplifier. In the modular chassis, the Preamp 5.1 links the modular amplifiers and/or equalizers to your source component, such as a CD or DVD player.
Using The Controls
Power
Press this switch to turn the unit on or off. The red LED in the switch will light to show power is on.
Turn this knob clockwise to increase the overall system volume. Be careful not to set the level so high as to cause distortion, which could damage the speakers.
Bass & Treble
Turn these knobs clockwise to increase the amount of bass (low frequencies) or treble (high frequencies). The 12:00 position indicates a flat response, equal levels of bass, treble and midrange.
Balance
Turn this knob clockwise or counterclockwise to change the proportion of the signal output to either channel. The 12:00 position indicates equal output to each channel.
Line
This button refers to the inputs on the back of the Preamp 5.1. If you are using XLR or balanced inputs (line 2), depress this button. If you are using RCA or unbalanced inputs (line 1), leave this button in the out position.
Tone
This button corresponds to the bass and treble knobs. To engage the bass and treble knobs, depress this button. To bypass the bass and treble knobs, so that they do not affect your sound, leave this button in the out position.
Hooking It Up
When connecting the Preamp
5.1, turn off or unplug your components. This prevents loud “pops” that might damage your speakers while you connect the cables.
The diagram at right shows the Preamp 5.1 in conjunction with other components from AudioSource’s modular separates line. The equalizer is optional, and you can substitute any amplifier or equalizer; the setup is the same. Also, XLR/balanced connections follow the same paths as the RCA/unbalanced connections described below.
1. Connect the source component (e.g. DVD player, CD player, cassette deck, microphone) to the Preamp 5.1 input.
2. If you are using a graphic equalizer, connect the two output channels of the Preamp 5.1 to the equalizer inputs. In this diagram, Channel 1 is left and Channel 2 is right. Connect the Channel 1 and 2 outputs from the equalizer to the amplifier inputs. Please note that the Amp 5.1 is a single-channel monoblock amplifier, so two are shown here. Rather than two monoblocks, you could use a single stereo amplifier, such as an Amp 6.2 or 6.3.
3. If you are not using a graphic equalizer, connect the two output channels of the Preamp 5.1 to the amplifier inputs.
