4Checking seat belts
WARNING
Whenever an accident has occurred, seat belt system is to be
subjected to a systematic examination. If the test items reveal
damage, customers are to be made aware of the need for belt
replacement.
Test items
♦ Checking webbing ⇒ page 42
♦ Checking belt retractor (locking action) ⇒ page 43
♦ Visual inspection of buckle ⇒ page 43
♦ Functional test of buckle ⇒ page 43
♦ Checking guide fittings and latch plate ⇒ page 44
♦ Checking attachment components and anchorage points
⇒ page 44
Note
If customers refuse to have damaged seat belts replaced, an ap‐
propriate note to this effect is to be made in the Service booklet.
4.1Checking webbing
– Pull webbing as far as it will go out of inertia reel or lap belt
adjuster.
– Check webbing for dirt and, if necessary, wash with mild soap
solution ⇒ Owner's manual .

•If either of the following illustrated examples of damage (1 and
2) is found on a crash vehicle, replace seat belt complete with
buckle.
•If damage such as that illustrated by items 1, 2 or 3 is found
on a vehicle which has not been involved in an accident, only
the damaged seat belt has to be replaced.
•1 - Webbing cut, torn or chafed
•2 - Frayed fabric at edge of belt
•3 - Burn marks caused by cigarettes or the like
4.2Checking inertia reel (locking action)
The inertia reel has two locking functions.
♦ The first locking function is triggered by pulling belt quickly out
of inertia reel (accelerated belt unwinding).
Checking
– Pull webbing firmly out of inertia reel.
•No locking effect - replace seat belt complete with buckle.
•In the event of problems with belt unwinding or retraction, start
by checking whether position of inertia reel has changed.
•The second locking function is triggered by altering vehicle
motion (vehicle-dependent locking function).
Checking
– Fasten seat belt.
– Accelerate vehicle to 20 km/h and then press foot brake to
implement emergency braking.
•If belt is not locked by locking mechanism on braking, replace
seat belt complete with buckle.
Audi TT 1999 ➤
WARNING
For safety reasons, test drive is to be performed on a road with
no traffic so as not to endanger other road users.
4.3Visual inspection of buckle
– Examine buckle for cracks and flaking.
•If damage is found, replace seat belt complete with buckle.
4.4Functional test of buckle
Checking buckle
– Insert latch plate in buckle until it is heard to engage. Pull firmly
on webbing to check whether locking mechanism has engag‐
ed.
•If latch plate fails to engage properly in buckle even once in
the course of a minimum of 5 tests, replace seat belt complete
with buckle.

Checking release function
– Release seat belt by pressing with finger on buckle button. If
webbing is slack, latch plate must be released automatically
from buckle.
•Check at least 5 times. If latch plate is not released even just
once, replace seat belt complete with buckle.
WARNING
Never use lubricant to eliminate noise or stiffness at buckle
buttons.
4.5Checking guide fittings and latch plate
If belt system has been subjected to load (seat belt fastened in
an accident), plastic-coated fittings will reveal fine parallel score
marks (On the other hand, wear caused by frequent use can be
seen from uniformly smooth patches).
– Examine for deformation, flaking and cracks in plastic.
•If scoring and/or damage is found, replace seat belt complete
with buckle.
4.6Checking attachment components and
anchorage points
♦ Latch plate deformed (strained)
♦ Height adjuster not working
♦ Anchorage points (seat, pillar, floor) deformed or thread dam‐
aged
•If component damage is found, replace seat belt complete with
buckle.
•Replace anchorage points.
Note
Only the appropriate damaged component has to be replaced in
the event of damage not resulting from an accident (e.g. wear).
4.7Checking child seat restraint function for
additional child seats (not for driver's
seat belt)
The complete belt assembly (including side trim) must be fitted
for checking this function.
Activation of restraint function
♦ Pull out webbing as far as it will go.
Correct function
♦ Belt should be heard to retract.
♦ If retraction is stopped, the belt can no longer be pulled out
again.
Deactivation
♦ Retract belt as far as the last approx. 100 mm.

♦ The following must also be replaced if necessary (visual in‐
spection): All damaged components
After replacing airbag units or control unit, affix labels (tear-off
portion only) to registration card and forward registration card to
appropriate Regional Sales Centre or importer for recording pur‐
poses.
5.5Checking attachment components fol‐
lowing an accident
Always replace all damaged attachment components. Bending
back into shape or “forcing” is not permitted.
The following components must be checked after triggering of the
corresponding airbag.
If front passenger's airbag has been triggered:
♦ Dash panel central tube; stress-free fitting of the front pas‐
senger's airbag supports and the front passenger's airbag
must be possible. Otherwise the central tube is also to be re‐
placed.
♦ Check the glove box for damage and replace if damage is
found.
If driver's airbag has been triggered:
♦ Steering wheel; remove steering wheel and set it down on the
rim on a flat surface, the full area of the rim must lie flat. Oth‐
erwise the steering wheel is to be replaced.
♦ Check steering wheel for smoke marks and replace steering
wheel if such marks are found.
5.6Accident not involving airbag triggering
♦ Airbag component replacement is not necessary if airbag
warning lamp -K75- does not indicate a fault. Seat belts are to
be checked separately.
pyrotechnic battery isolators) are to be processed in the proper
manner in the original packaging as stipulated by local legis‐
lation. In cases of doubt, contact the appropriate Regional
Sales Centre or importer.
♦ Pyrotechnic components ignited in the course of an accident
can be disposed of together with commercial refuse.
WARNING
This does not apply to belt tensioners operating on the Wankel
principle. These are to be treated in the same manner as nonignited pyrotechnic components (e. g. airbags, seat belts, py‐
rotechnic battery isolators). Reason: It is not possible with the
equipment available to workshops to check whether all the ig‐
nition stages of Wankel-type belt tensioners have been ignited.
